The mining industry worldwide is currently facing a significant restructuring process. In most underground mines, widespread mechanization of the mining processes increases production while reducing staff numbers. At the same time, mining depths as well as the lateral spread of the mine workings are increasing. This ever-changing mining environment requires sophisticated solutions for the design and operation of underground mines. In fact, a reduced number of mining engineers is taking responsibility for everincreasing mine operations. This applies not only to the excavation of the minerals, but also to all other aspects of the mining operation, including health and safety, disaster management, and mine rescue organization. Most mining engineering graduates entering the industry lack experience in mine emergency management. Young engineer trainees must learn mine emergency management and rescue work in addition to their normal training experience on the job. Often, and unfortunately, emergency and rescue training at different mining companies is not carried out to the highest level and standard and with the best possible training outcomes. The tasks and challenges a young engineer faces while being trained in a new position do not leave much room for additional training in mine rescue and emergency management. At the same time, experienced, ?old hands? are retiring and cannot easily be replaced due to limited graduation numbers. Strategies are being developed at mining universities worldwide to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and to provide hands-on experience for managing potential accident and disaster scenarios underground. Two of these strategies, from the USA and from Central Europe, are presented in this paper. These specific strategies have to be seen under special consideration of the local and regional boundary conditions, but might serve as case studies for mining schools and universities in other countries.

The Bureau of Mines undertook this investigation in order to determine the feasibility of producing commercially acceptable alumina and iron by application of the Pedersen process to high-silica, high-titania, ferruginous bauxites of the Pacific Northwest. Calcium aluminate slags were produced by smelting bauxite with coke and lime in an electric-arc furnace. Over 90 percent of the total alumina can be extracted by sodium carbonate solution from slags of properly controlled ternary-phase composition (CaO-Al203-SiO2) that are cooled slowly enough to permit adequate crystallization of the 2CaO-SiO2 and the calcium aluminate compounds. Most of the iron charged was recovered in the regulus; the slag contained about 2 percent iron (as iron oxide), regardless of smelting time.

This paper focuses on the recent achievements and practices developed through the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) initiative of the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), in conjunction with the three partner universities involved in mining engineering education – University of New South Wales (UNSW), West Australian School of Mines, Curtin University (WASM), and University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. The paper will then move on to future initiatives. Importantly, the exciting challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering – Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common 3rd and 4th year program to all three universities from 2007, involving innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process. Such an initiative is not without its challenges, and has a long way to go, before becoming a reality. However, it offers greater attractiveness and marketing potential to prospective students, as well as economic efficiencies, whilst delivering a better quality, and hopefully greater quantity of graduates to industry. It can also form a launching platform for a much greater level of international collaboration, through a proposed International Mining Education Network (IMEN) which is currently being floated amongst a number of international educators.

The application of a method for analyzing pressure build-up curves to determine the effective permeability in the Spraberry is presented. Sixteen upper Spraberry wells of the Driver area arc analyzed and show variations in the in-place effective permeability of 2 to 183 md. Since these value- are much larger than the .5 md. or less reported for the matrix rock. a large part of the vertical fractures noted in Spraberry cores- must be considered native to the formation. The effectiveness of the well fracture treatment in connecting the well bore to the native fracture system is analyzed by comparison of the effective permeability as determined from the PI test to that obtained from a pressure build-up curve. These results show that the fracture treatment is sufficiently effective in connecting tile well bore to the native fractrure system to yield a flow capacity within about 50 per cent of that dictated by the native fracture system About two-thirds of the wells show some degree of local blockage. INTRODUCTION Fractured reservoirs have been known in the past.' However, during the past two years the Spraberry formation has directed the attention of the petroleum industry to a study of the performance of a fractured reservoir. The large variation in the number of fractures noted in Spraberry cores rile large variation in the producing ability of offset well.. the dramatic effect of well treatment on well ,productivity. the unknown quantity of oil stored in the fractures and matrix rock. and the unknown oil to be recovered were part of the initial Spraberry puzzle. In this type reservoir where the well treatment is an important factor in determining the productivity. it i- particularly desirable to determine the in-place flow capacity of the drainage area at distance* far removed from the well bore. This value. when compared to the flow capacity obtained from a PI measurement, will show the effectiveness of the well treatment (completion. fracture treatment, acidization. etc. in establishing a flow capacity in the vicinity of the well bore equal to that in the more remote region. The object of this paper i.; to show the application of a method of pressure build-up analysis for this purpose in studying the Upper Spraberry formation in the Driver area. STATEMENT OF THEORY The theoretical basis for the application of a pressure buildup curve to show the effective permeability of the rock at distances far removed from the well bore has been presented in detail in earlier publications.', in the previous development it was shown that pressure build-up behavior of all wells could be reduced to the same dimensionless build-up curve of Fig. 1. This paper describes the key components of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine design and the development and construction status of the mine. Drawpoint production from GBC will be initiated in 2018 following the closure of the Grasberg open pit. Full production of 160 000 t/d is planned for 2024, which will make it a 20-year time period between initial access development in 2004 and full production.Diluted ore reserves are about 1 Bt at a grade of 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.78 g/t Au. The mine plans some 2400 drawpoints on a 20 m × 30 m drawbell spacing in a 700 000 m2 footprint using the El Teniente layout. The drawpoint opening sequence includes five production blocks, the first two of which are scheduled to be undercut simultaneously in 2018. Ore is transported using diesel-powered load-haul-dumps to a series of orepasses and then delivered via loading chutes to a rail haulage system, which delivers the ore to a three gyratory crusher complex. Crushed ore is transported to the mill stockpiles via dual inclined conveyors.Development and construction of the substantial fixed facilities are now well underway. Primary access for personnel and materials is via the 6 km Ali Boediardjo (AB) adits. A service shaft will hoist personnel and materials from the AB adits level to the various operating levels. Shaft commissioning is scheduled for late 2015. The rail haulage system installation and construction is in progress and is due to be commissioned in 2017, which is timed to coincide with the commissioning of the ore handling system. Ventilation is provided through a series of large intake and exhaust drifts, and two of the four main fans have been commissioned. Two remediation strategies have been considered to reduce the levels of acidity and dissolved metals in acid mine drainage discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand. The oxidising strategy involves adding alkalinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) resulting in the precipitation of metallic oxides and decreased acidity. The reducing strategy involves removing DO, resulting in the precipitation of metallic sulfides, followed by addition of alkalinity to decrease acidity. Field remediation trials indicate a reducing system may be more effective for this site than an oxidising system. A residence time of only two hours in the limestone layer of a successive alkalinity producing system (SAPS) is sufficient to reduce acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 71 per cent, aluminium by 59 per cent, nickel by 38 per cent and manganese by 26 per cent. The proposed remediation plan will likely include a series of SAPS, followed by an anoxic limestone drain, and settling ponds to capture any remaining precipitates.

O presente estudo visou avaliar em escala laboratorial os efeitos da substituição de carvão importado por nacional em misturas típicas para fabricação de coque metalúrgico. Carvão da camada Barro Branco foi amostrado, beneficiado e caracterizado. Misturas entre carvões coqueificáveis importados, coque de petróleo e o carvão brasileiro foram produzidas de modo a permitir a avaliação da influência do carvão nacional na qualidade do coque. O coque gerado no estudo foi produzido em escala de laboratório e posteriormente avaliado a partir de testes de resistência mecânica e reatividade. Os resultados do estudo apontam que a substituição parcial de carvão importado por nacional é viável tecnicamente sem que ocorram prejuízos importantes à qualidade do coque gerado. As diferenças de qualidade dos coques produzidos com ou sem carvão nacional foram menores para misturas com alto teor de inertes, onde as características termoplásticas da mistura passam a controlar a qualidade do coque gerado.

"Mechanical properties and microstructure of an Al-4.7Cu-0.74Mg-0.51Si-0.48Mn-0.10Cr-0.09Ti-0.02Fe (wt. %) alloy subjected to various thermomechanical processing (TMP) have been investigated and compared to conventional ageing at 170°C (designated T6). Three TMP routes involving cold deformation of solution treated samples were tested. These were (i) 3%-stretching (T8-3%), (ii) equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to true strain (e) of ~1 (T8-1) and (iii) ECAP to e~2 (T8-2), all with subsequent ageing at 170°C for 0-96 h. At peak age conditions, both yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture decreased for the T8-3% state as compared to the T6 condition. Intermediate ECAP (T8-1 and T8-2) lead to significant increase in maximum yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture. The changes in mechanical properties were related to microstructure evolution, encompassing changes in grain sizes, dislocation densities, precipitate morphology and phase fractions, which were characterised using transmission electron microscopy. Relations between TMP, precipitation behavior and contributions to different strengthening mechanisms are evaluated.INTRODUCTION Al-Cu-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as structural materials in aerospace industry due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance. These properties are largely due to the formation of a large number of nano-sized metastable precipitates during artificial ageing (Polmear, 2006; Eskin, 2003; Gazizov, Dubina, Zhemchuzhnikova, & Kaibyshev, 2015). The U.S. Bureau of Mines made an economic appraisal of the Buttermilk study area, Inyo County, California in October 1980. Results of surveys indicate no potential for metallic, non-metallic, or energy resources in the area. However, glacial till covering most of the area prevented bedrock examinations by the appraisal teams or earlier prospectors. No mining claims are known to be in the area. INTRODUCTION Present Studies The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center, searched county mining claim records and other data available concerning mineral deposits, claims, leases, production, and mining activity in the area. The Bureau conducted field work in October 1980 searching for prospects and claim locations. Fourteen reconnaissance lode and placer samples taken from the area were analyzed for gold, silver, and tungsten; a spectrographic analysis also was run on selected samples.

Ferrochromium produced by smelting chromite ores is an important alloying component in the steel industry. Ore, coke and fluxes are mixed and reacted in an arc furnace for a smelting process of ferrochromium. In ad-dition to this process, pre-reduction of chromite ore with carbon is an important industrial process. In all these processes, the mechanism and kinetics of reduction of chromite with carbon play an important role. In this study, the reduction of Turkish chromite ore with carbon was investigated. Chromite and carbon were ground to three different particle size groups. Chromite was mixed with carbon in stoichiometric and excess ratios. The samples were reduced under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1,200° and 1,350°C. The formed phases and alloy compositions of reduced chromite samples were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDAX and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Experimental results showed that the degree of reduction and the reduction rate increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size. The highest degree of reduction, 61.4%, was obtained at 1,350°C. The reduction took place in three stages: Stage 1: transformation of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and formation of metallic nuclei, Stage 2: formation of metallic crust around the particles and Stage 3: growth of the metallic crust and coalescence of the metallic phase.

Sylvite of Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates an 8000 TPD potash mine and refinery located nine miles North East of Rocanville, Saskatchewan. Prior to Hudson Bay's entry in 1968 into potash mining and refining, it was one of the more traditional and conservative Canadian Mining Companies whose principal business had been for many years a successful copper-zinc mining and smelting operation located at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The potash reserves being mined by Sylvite were acquired through the acquisition of Francana Oil and Gas. This acquisition was at the time when several major potash mines were being developed or had recently been brought into production in the Province. These mines are owned by either very substantial Canadian Mining Companies or Multi-National Mining Companies with considerable potash mining experience. At that time, it became very apparent because of the new mines coming into production, potash mining and refining would quickly become a very competitive industry. Because of long term considerations, Hudson Bay decided to proceed with the development of its potash reserves, recognizing the Mine and Refinery would have to be the most advanced available in order to successfully operate. This report deals with the mining operation at Sylvite and the degree of success Sylvite has achieved.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a capacidade da máquina de tração Instron em conjunto com um forno acoplado em sua estrutura (especialmente desenvolvido para este fim) para a obtenção das curvas tensão versus deformação do aço 22MnB5 nas temperaturas usualmente empregadas no processo de estampagem a quente. Adicionalmente, teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da temperatura nas propriedades mecânicas do aço para estampagem a quente. De posse dos dados experimentais de tensão e deformação foram realizadas tentativas de ajuste aos modelos constitutivos Voce–Kocks e Hollomon para as diferentes temperaturas. Os resultados demonstraram que o conjunto Instron-forno foi capaz de entregar resultados com repetibilidade, permitindo assim o ajuste dos dados ao modelo de Voce-Kocks na maior parte dos casos.

Strategic mine planning focuses on cutoff grade selection, capacity planning and block sequencing. Despite significant knowledge accumulated, potential value can be added to mineral sourcing by addressing various aspects. A case study on a metallic deposit with a lognormal grade distribution examines if grade/metal distribution influences cutoff grade selection. Six data sets with different shape and scale factors, but the same ore tonnage and metal quantity, are analyzed. Results indicate deposits with lower shape and scale factors are more sensitive to metal price and discount rate changes. The study also investigates the effect of economies of scale (EoS) on project value, focusing on the ratio of variable cost to total cost (capacity factor). Two regression analyses are conducted for optimal capacity planning and cutoff grade selection. The first shows capacity planning is highly sensitive to the EoS of mining and mineral-processing costs, with grade variability and metal distribution being negligible. In the second analysis, grade variability and EoS of mineral processing costs are vital for cutoff grade selection.

For every blast pattern, zones of unique material types need to be classified before mining. Most material types can be summarized into different kinds of ore and waste. Blocks generated from blasthole assays are too small to be selectively mined, so areas with a single material classification meeting the mine’s selective mining unit must be defined. Current industry standard practices are to manually draw ore/waste dig limits, but this process is subjective and results in quantities of dilution and ore loss that can be improved upon to enhance the profitability of mining operations. In this study, two weeks of production data from a homogeneous copper (Cu) porphyry and heterogeneous manto-type Cu deposit were used to assess the variability in the hand-drawn dig limits of 20 geologists, mining engineers and ore control specialists, which were compared with the optimal ore/waste delineation. The profit for 20 distinct hand-drawn dig limits for the homogeneous mine varied by 3.7 percent, from $10.5 million to $10.9 million, averaging at $10.8 million. The percentage was nearly double for the more heterogeneous mine at 5.9 percent, from $17.9 million to $19.0 million, averaging at $18.6 million. Using the optimal ore waste delineation, the profit increased to $11.0 million (1.9 percent increase) and $19.3 million (7.0 percent increase) for the homogeneous and heterogeneous deposit, respectively. The natural variability, diggability requirement and selectivity are identified as the main drivers of ore loss and dilution. Recommendations are provided for reducing the subjectivity in manual hand-drawn dig limits by integrating dig limit optimization algorithms as a tool to assist practitioners.

After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. PSC has been involved with the mineral sands business for several years with senior staff having in excess of 30 years global industry experience. Increased mechanization .of coal mines has emphasized the need for study of actual power requirements of the various machines employed in the production of coal and losses in the distribution of power to these machines. These studies are being made in order that hazards, excessive use of power, and high maintenance cost of equipment resulting from these losses may be analyzed and eliminated where possible. Research on the use of electric power in-coal mines was suggested by the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Mines in 1937, and it was decided to begin with a study of individual machines of various types under operating conditions in modern coal mines. The transmission of power, particularly line losses and inadequate return circuits, should be a part of the investigation. This report presents some of the data of an initial study in commercial mines. Modern transportation systems are one of the most important achievements of our civilization and provide us with tools for broadening individual and social freedom of choice. The transportation system initiated today is handed dawn to the next generation, probably with little choice because of the enormous expenditure of monies involved, and influence their way of life as to where they should live and where they should work. The ever increasing antagonism between the citizens and the planners of the transportation systems necessitates a careful review of the entire planning process. The planning process can be broadly classified into: the goal formulation and decision making process; the plan development process; and the plan implementation process. THE GOAL FORMULATION AND DECISION MAKING PROCESS Goal formulation and decision making is one of the vital phases of the planning process and is primarily based upon social values. In measuring social values, the planner must employ an appropriate scale of measurement since in the absence of this yardstick, these values tend to became vague and abstract ideals. The need for major social programs and concerns (poverty, etc.) of the urban areas should be analyzed to determine the type of transportation system which would contribute to the solution.
