Quench and tempered Cr-Mo plate steel was found not to contain a fully martensitic structure as a result of either slow slack quenching or insufficient hardenability at the cooling rates used. The resulting microstructure contains bainite in combination with martensite. It is necessary to examine the implications of bainite for the toughness of the final product. Loss of toughness arises primarily from the inter-lath carbides that typically form in upper bainite. An investigation into the effect of upper bainite in a martensitic matrix of a steel grade containing 0.17% C, 0.1% Cr, 0.54% Mo, and 20 ppm Bindicated lower toughness than in a fully martensitic structure.

Biodiversity offsets are conservation actions intended to compensate for the residual, unavoidable harm to biodiversity caused by development projects. The use of biodiversity offsets in the context of mining has significant potential for enabling mining to take place in areas with biodiversity values, where it would not otherwise be possible to meet the relevant legal tests under the Resource Management Act 1991, and potentially the Conservation Act 1987. This paper looks at the concept of biodiversity offsets (and environmental compensation generally) both in New Zealand and internationally, and considers how lessons learned overseas may be adapted for this country. In New Zealand the practice of biodiversity offsets and environmental compensation is ad hoc and variable. The challenge with biodiversity offsets is to establish a transparent and coherent means of identifying the overall priorities and objectives of adopting such an approach, as well as how the relevant values are measured and protected. Establishing a methodology for quantifying biodiversity value, and the need for clear policy guidelines on biodiversity offsets are identified as key areas in need of wider discussion.

The production of a 40% Al-Ti alloy was successfully proven at the lab scale, using pure TiO2, aluminium, and lime. These tests were conducted in an induction furnace maintained at 1600?16250C. The introduction of rutile into the feed recipe resulted in an alloy containing between 0.35 and 1.10% Zr, depending on rutile to TiO2 ratio. DC arc production of the alloy was largely accomplished at 40 and then 200kW scale. These tests evaluated various metallurgical and operational factors including target slag composition, Ti-content in the alloy, co-feeding versus sequential, furnace bath depth, and rutile as part of the Ti containing feedstock. Overall, an alloy containing 24?33% Ti was consistently produced with co-feeding of the reactants and with lower taphole tapping. When rutile was added, the zirconium analysis in the alloy remained below 0.2%. The main impurity elements were iron, silicon, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen.

Crushing and grinding, or comminution, circuits are the most energy intensive process of a mineral processing plant. Comminution involves the physical size reduction of an orebody to a particle size sufficient for recovery of the mineral values. However, the comminution process remains inherently inefficient. The inefficiency is a result of the operating nature of comminution devices such as grinding mills, where transfer of energy between grinding media and particles in unconstrained and completely random. New comminution circuit design strategies are presented in this paper. The aim of the new strategies is to improve the overall efficiency of the comminution process and reduce the total energy consumption of a comminution circuit. The energy efficient strategies include the: ? rejection of coarse size liberated gangue from the comminution circuit and further downstream size reduction ? use of more efficient grinding and crushing equipment ? the selection of coarser particle product sizes to alleviate the increased energy intensity required to achieve finer product sizes Singularly and when combined, these energy efficient strategies can significantly decrease the overall energy consumption of a comminution circuit. This paper also explores the financial impact of certain energy efficient strategies using an analysis tool called EcoNomics?. It shows that substantial financial gains can be made by including more efficient technologies and methods in comminution circuit design.

O efeito da convecção forçada foi estudado na micro e macroestrutura de lingotes de silício grau metalúrgico obtidos pela solidificação unidirecional a partir da extração de calor por uma base refrigerada em contato com o fundo do cadinho com o banho líquido. Um disco sob rotação foi imerso no silício líquido para promover a convecção forçada. Em lingotes de 100 mm, esta convecção aumenta de 8 para 80 mm o comprimento de uma região de grãos colunares claramente alinhados e livre de intermetálicos, indicando um aumento da macrossegregação. Um modelo de transferência de calor e massa indica que o aumento de transporte de soluto causado pela convecção forçada diminui o super-resfriamento constitucional e, consequentemente, aumenta a estabilidade da interface sólido-líquido plana, sem células ou dendritas. A ausência de células e dendritas pode ter contribuído para a maior macrossegregação de impurezas observada sob efeito de convecção forçada.

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo analisar por meio da termodinâmica computacional a influência do K2O na dissolução das fases sólidas formadas durante o processo de dessulfuração de ferro gusa. Para isso, foi utilizada a cal como agente dessulfurante e a Sodalita (Fonólio) como fundente, realizando uma adição de K2O no fluxante de 1% a 10%, com uma temperatura de trabalho de 1400ºC. Por meio do uso de software de termodinâmica computacional FactSage, foi possível simular e avaliar as fases sólidas e líquidas formadas na temperatura determinada e comparar com os resultados obtidos com outras análises. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que o aumento gradativo de K2O levam a um aumento do potencial termodinâmico de dessulfuração e melhores condições cinéticas, sendo a mistura que apresentou os melhores resultados a que continha 10% de sodalita com adição de 10% de K2O na fonte.

Final mine sealing of BMA’s Crinum North mine, near Emerald, Queensland was undertaken in December 2015. Due to the benign atmospheric environment at Crinum North, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) Górniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) unit was utilised to reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground atmosphere as part of the final sealing process.The GAG was utilised by way of a vertical borehole from the surface to seam to successfully reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground mine workings. Application of the GAG unit enabled the underground mine to be classified as stable and inert within days of the GAG operation, and subsequently cease gas monitoring at Crinum North. The data and information obtained from this activity provides valuable information to the underground coal mining industry on successful application of the GAG in realistic situations.This paper discusses the strategy used for sealing, the assisted inertisation and the results obtained from the application of the GAG unit. It discusses both the overall results and gives a detailed review of the gas monitoring data obtained via the tube bundle and real-time system, both during and following the use of the GAG unit.Gas monitoring results obtained and the strategy used are critical to share with the industry to obtain a better understanding of how the GAG unit works, and how it can be applied for emergency preparedness, emergency response or planned inertisation.CITATION:Westthorp, E, 2017. The paper describes state of the art non-linear analyses of the pile groups that were employed during the raising of the 133m high triumphal arch which forms the centre piece of the new Wembley stadium in North London. The deformation behaviour of these piles groups was critical during the lifting process, due to the slendemess of the arch structure. The issue was made more critical by the high profile nature of the project. The results of Class A (Lambe (1973)) predictions of the pile group movements are compared with observed displacements and rotations which were accurately measured on site. To illustrate the importance of soil non-linearity on pile group behaviour, comparison is also made with pile group analyses which assume a linear soil stiffness.

"The Laronde mill was commissioned in 1988 and has been treating the Laronde Penna ore since 2000. The Laronde plant, situated in the Abitibi region of Quebec, has experienced mill expansions to accommodate 7500 mtpd and to recover gold and silver as well as important amounts of base metals (Cu, Zn, Pb). Ten sequential metallurgical and environmental processes are responsible for metals recovery and process viability. Over 200,000 ounces of gold, 4,5 million ounces of silver, 7000 tonnes of copper, and 78,000 tonnes of zinc are produced annually.In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking high grade (35-45 g/t Au) pyrite sulphide concentrate (TCGO) for gold extraction at a newly constructed treatment plant, increasing gold output at Laronde by 40,000 ounces. In 2009, the high gold grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the Laronde plant increasing output by 120,000 ounces of gold. TCGO and Lapa productions are forecasted until 2018 and 2015 respectively, with known reserves of each mine.Today, up to 140 permanent employees run and optimise the Laronde plant operation. As a result, Laronde has intricacies intrinsic to a large and varied operation. The paper will outline the metallurgical highlights, challenges, and future outlook related to the treatment of each ore type (Laronde, TCGO, and Lapa).INTRODUCTIONFollowing the 2000 to 2003 expansions, the Laronde plant evolved into a mature milling complex with developed processing, man power, and water treatment capabilities able to accommodate the complex Laronde ore. The ore requires a series of grinding, copper/lead flotation and separation, zinc flotation, zinc tails precious metals leaching, followed by a counter-current decantation circuit and Merrill Crowe precipitation. A paste backfill and SO2-air cyanide destruction operate intermittently. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metals precipitation plant prior to water recycling to the mill. A biological water treatment plant was put into service in 2004 to address the build-up of thiocyanate in the tailings ponds at Laronde. This was the result of the high sulphide content of the Laronde ore and 90% recirculation of the process water. The plant uses bacteria to oxidize and destroy thiocyanate, and removes phosphate from the water before it is released to the environment."

Zinc ranks third and lead fourth in world nonferrous metal conumption. In 1972 the free world consumed 3,333,000 mt of refined lead and 4,422,000 mt of refined zinc. The lead tonnage was divided into the following end uses: storage batteries (42%), lead allows (7%), pigments and chemicals (11%), cable sheathing (9%), gasoline additives (13%), pipes and sheets (8%), and miscellaneous uses (10%). The corresponding distribution of zinc uses in 1972 was galvanizing (39%), die casting (26%), brass (15%), rolled zinc (8%), oxide excluding American Process zinc made directly from concentrate (6%), and other uses (6%). The pattern of usage of lead and zinc varies considerably from country to country. During 1972 in the USA 49% of refined lead was consumed in storage batteries, 19% in gasoline additives, and only 3% in cable sheathing, whereas in the United Kingdom 28% of the lead was consumed in batteries, 14% in cable sheathing, and 14% in gasoline additives. For zinc the major US uses were die casting (41%) and galvanizing (37%), with about 3% consumed as rolled zinc; corresponding usages in the same applications in France were 12, 28 and 28% and in Australia 12, 67, and 3%, respectively. Industrial process water for the Commodore Coal Mine and the adjoining Millmerran Power Station is provided by pumping secondary treated sewage effluent 100 km from the Wetalla Sewage Treatment Plant near Toowoomba. (A separate source is used for potable water.) The effluent is not of sufficient quality for discharge to a watercourse, but it is suitable, with further treatment, for the mine and power station. In designing and constructing the pipeline, special emphasis was placed on preventing accidental spills or planned releases to the environment. The pipeline and associated works can transfer 1000 ML/annum for reuse in the coal mine and power station.

As técnicas que visam aumentar a densidade de carga possibilitam elevar a produtividade da coqueria e, além disso, permitem utilizar carvões com menor poder coqueificante. O aumento de densidade pode contribuir ainda para a obtenção de um coque de melhor qualidade, o que contribui para a redução do coke rate no alto-forno. Uma alternativa para aumentar a densidade de carga é a adição de óleo na mistura de carvões, o que reduz a tensão superficial da água, permitindo uma maior aproximação entre as partículas e favorecendo o contato efetivo durante a fase plástica. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adição de óleo na densidade de carga para diferentes condições de granulometria e umidade do carvão empregado. Para isso foram realizados ensaios para medir a densidade de carga em três níveis de umidade (8%, 10% e 12%) e granulometria (82%, 85% e 88% < 2,83 mm). Posteriormente, foram realizados ensaios de coqueificação em escala piloto, e o coque produzido foi avaliado quanto ao DI15/150 (drum index), CRI (coke reactivity index) e CSR (coke strenght reaction). Os resultados mostraram que a adição gradativa de óleo promoveu aumento na densidade de carga enquanto a elevação da umidade do carvão e seu afinamento provocou a redução desse parâmetro. A qualidade metalúrgica do coque aumentou com a elevação da densidade de carga demostrando que essa é uma técnica com potencial de uso em plantas industriais.

"Soft technology" computers and computer programs-brings to mind a room full of machines, tape drives, disks, plotters, and printers spitting out financial reports. Computers now have a much broader scope of applications because of reductions in equipment size and cost. For example, people now interact directly with computers to control events. Such computers and associated equipment-called interactive control systems-are often small, relatively inexpensive, and can be designed to increase productivity at mining operations. This is accomplished by improving communications between individuals; giving employees the information needed to make decisions in real time, as events are happening; and giving individuals the background needed to perform more effectively. This paper will describe a procedure for determining the return on investment for interactive control systems, and describe four such systems. The analysis process is general in nature and can be applied to any type of mining operation or production process.

From 1984 through 1987, the Bureau of Mines investigated numerous prospects and new discoveries of columbium, rare-earth elements (REE), uranium, zirconium, and other metals associated with the multi-phased peralkaline granite at Bokan Mountain, southeastern Alaska. This report summarizes the mineral evaluations and estimates indicated and inferred resources for those prospects containing significant tonnage and grade. A total of approximately 96.2 MM lb Cb205 (43 pct of the tonnage at a grade exceeding 0.125 pct Cb205), and 11.8 MM lb U308, 27.9 MM lb Th02, 133.0 MM lb Y203, 637.6 MM lb ZrO2, and 241 MM lb REO are estimated to be contained within nine deposits totalling 37.8 million tons (at least 80 pct of resource tonnage also exceeds 0.5 pct Y203 + REO). Generally, half of the REO content is composed of the heavy yttrium subgroup. Several deposits also contain beryllium and tantalum; 2.1 MM lb of Ta205 and 8.9 MM lbs of BeO were estimated. These estimates would likely be substantially increased with additional exploration. Four deposit types were investigated; shear zones and fracture-related deposits, pegmatites, mineralized dikes, and placers. Mineralized dikes contain most of the beryllium, columbium, tantalum, yttrium, zirconium, and REE resources, whereas shear zones and fracture-related deposits (Ross-Adams mine) contain the principal of the uranium resource. Pegmatites are similarly mineralized as are dike deposits, and contain low levels of gold. Placer potential is suggested, but no deposits were found.

This paper describes the overall delivery of the tunneling for the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand’s Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line in Bangkok and the constraints provided by the alignment. Eight earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines were employed under two major civil works contracts to drive approximately33 kilometers of tunnel in soft saturated ground beneath the crowded streets of Bangkok. Responsibility within the contract for building damage provided an inherent control for ground movement arising form tunneling when the right of way was narrower than the influence zone. These limits affect the earth pressure balance requirements and permissible ground loss. The methods adopted to limit ground movements and deal with the various obstacles to tunneling influenced the design and operation of the machines. The challenges provided by the need to tunnel through numerous lines of piled foundations of canal bridges and overpasses crossing the alignment are described.

A laboratory technique for simulating in-situ uranium mining was developed and used to determine the effects of leaching variables on permeability, uranium recovery, leach solution interaction with the ore-aquifer environment, and post-leach chemical leakage. In particular, ammonium bicarbonate, the commonly-used leach solution, was examined in great detail. Agitation leach tests were conducted to examine the effect on ammonium sorption and desorption of clay content, solution and clay ammonium levels, pH, and the type and concentration of other anions and cations in solution. Initial column tests were performed to determine the degree of ore-aquifer interaction that could be expected for various leach solutions; sulfuric acid, and ammonium, sodium, and potassium bi-carbonates. Subsequent tests examined various methods to restore the ores by lowering the post-leach chemical leakage. The restoration tests examined the use of reducing agents (e.g., ammonium bisulfite, sodium bisulfite; and sodium sulfite), ore blocking and stabilizing agents (e.g., sodium silicate, aluminum chloride, and magnesium-calcium salt).and ammonium displacement agents (e.g., aluminum chloride and lanthanum chloride-sulfate)

It is fairly common practice to reinject water into the aquifer near the oil-water interface in water-drive reservoirs. There have been many studies of aquifer behavior without reinjection,l-5 but apparently no analytical studies have been made to indicate performance when injection wells are present in the aquifer. The diffusivity equation may be used to describe the pressure behavior in an aquifer. When sources are present it can be written as A general solution of Eq. 1 may be obtained as the sum of two solutions. One is a general solution of the homogeneous equation, obtained by dropping the source term in Eq. 1 and still satisfying the required boundary conditions. Another is a general solution of Eq. 1 satisfying homogeneous boundary conditions.1° The first solution, which corresponds to the aquifer without reinjection, has been given quantitative and qualitative treatment in the literature.l-5,8,9 The latter solution will be treated here. Solutions with variable injection rates are obtained by superimposing solutions with constant rates, so we have considered only the latter. Five cases have been treated here: 1. A linear aquifer of finite width and extent. Water is injected into the aquifer at point xo, yo at constant rate. The pressure along the line x = 0 is maintained at zero pressure. (See Fig. 1.) Equations showing the pressure distribution, rates, velocity and cumulative influx have been developed. Certain numerical results are shown. 2. A linear aquifer of finite width and extent.
