The United States Bureau of Mines has engaged in a study of the conditions under which coal mine accidents, resulting in the loss of life, limb, or time to the injured person, occur from falls of roof and coal. This publication is devoted to the results of a study conducted in the coal mines of the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau coal fields of Utah. To show the necessity of this study, a statement of the fatalities that have occurred during the period 1928-1930, inclusive, in the bituminous mines of the United States and of Utah, is presented (Table 1), followed by a brief description of this Utah district, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining, supervision, roof testing and timbering for roof support, all of which are factors in any plan devised for preventing accidents from falls of roof and coal.

Norton Co., a manufacturer of abrasive products and diamond drilling and coring bits for oil and gas exploration, is building a $19.1 million addition, scheduled for completion in late 1980, to the Huntsville, AL. The plant makes alumina-zirconia abrasive grains used in grinding wheels and coated abrasives. ALUMINUM Martin Marietta Aluminum Inc. announced plans to expand production capacity of its 112,000-ton-per-year primary aluminum smelter at Goldendale, WA to 177,000 tons per year. The $125 million expansion was scheduled to come onstream in 1981. The Aluminum Company of America announced plans to restart a fourth potline during October at its 185,000-ton-per-year Point Comfort, TX primary aluminum smelter.

The countercurrent gas-solid heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temperature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assumptions, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating conditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which controls the strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char strength in the pilot plant in 1961 due to the performance of the drier and a prediction is made of a way in which the limitation could be overcome.

Com o objetivo de estudar a interação da hematita com biorreagente de flotação (Bacillus subtilis), foram realizados experimentos de ângulo de contato. Após a interação com o biorreagente, a superfície da hematita apresentou uma hidrofobicidade apresentando um valor de 46,0º. Os experimentos de potencial zeta mostraram uma interação acentuada entre o reagente e o mineral na faixa de pH alcalina com deslocamento do ponto isoelétrico da hematita. Ensaios de microflotação foram conduzidos em tubo de Hallimond modificado, em pH 6, com uma recuperação de, aproximadamente, 80%. As teorias DLVO e X-DLVO foram aplicadas para avaliar as energias de interação entre o reagente e os minerais. As duas teorias foram capazes de prever a interação que ocorre entre o biorreagente e a hematita. Os resultados evidenciaram o uso promissor do reagente na flotação direta de hematita.

THE idea of burning blast-furnace gases directly in gas-engines, instead of under steam-boilers, as had previously been done, was first put into practice barely ten years ago, almost simultaneously in Great Britain, Germany and Belgium. The pioneers of this movement made their first experiments with small engines. After these experiments had given satisfactory results, and it had been shown that the thermal value of the poor blast-furnace gases, in spite of defective scrubbing, could with safety be directly transformed into mechanical work in the gas-engine, there very soon arose a considerable demand for gas-engines of large power, similar to the large steam-engines employed in metallurgical works. In face of these sudden requirements, the gas-engine builders were placed in a difficult position; for up to that time the gas-motor was considered as suitable for small engines only, and it was generally believed that the limit of size bad been attained with 100 to 150 effective h.p. in a single cylinder. Manufacturers of gas-motors, however, did not underrate the advantages offered by this new field for their manufactures, and it so happened that in Germany the Berlin-Anhaltische Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft, of Dessau, was the first to undertake the construction of a 600-h.p. two-cycle gas-engine, with two cyl¬inders of the Oechelhäuser-Junkers type, for the Hoerder Mining & Smelting Company. Introduction Many tables of nomenclature for igneous rocks have been introduced from time to time, and each has its strong proponents. As a result, any discussion of igneous? rocks is apt to prove confusing unless the names used for these rocks are defined. This ?became so obvious to a discussion group, formed by the members of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1948, that an attempt was made to establish a scheme of nomenclature that could be used by any member mapping anywhere in Canada. The writer was asked to co-ordinate the ideas presented by individuals in the discussion group, to arrange them in tabular form, and, later, to distribute copies of the resultant table to Canadian universities, provincial geological surveys, and some other geological discussion groups. Many useful suggestions and criticisms were received, were studied ?by members? of the original group, and, so far as practicable, were incorporated in the scheme of nomenclature. The result is the table presented here. This nomenclature of igneous rocks is at present being used by most members of the Geological Survey of Canada who are working with igneous rocks, and by some Canadian universities. We hope it will be found useful and be more widely accepted. With this idea in mind, certain principles were adopted in drawing up the nomenclature.

Reduction of Groote Eylandt (Australia) and Wessels (South Africa) manganese ores using CH4-H2-Ar gas mixture was investigated in a fixed bed laboratory reactor in the temperature range 1000?1200oC. The extent and kinetics of manganese ore reduction as a function of gas composition and temperature were determined by on-line off-gas analysis using mass-spectrometer and dew point sensor. Morphology of ores and its change in the course of reduction was examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Phases of raw materials and reduced samples were analysed by XRD and EPMA. Manganese oxides were reduced to carbide Mn7C3. High extent and rate of reduction by methane-containing gas in comparison with carbothermal reduction were attributed to high carbon activity in the reducing gas, which was in the range 15 - 50 (relative to graphite). The reduction rate of Wessels manganese ore increased with increasing temperature. Reduction rate and extent of Groote Eylandt manganese ore achieved maximum at 1050oC. The decrease in rate and extent of reduction of Groote Eylandt ore at higher temperatures, particularly at 1150-1200oC, was due to sintering and formation of semi-liquid silicate slag. The optimum conditions for the reduction of manganese ores were established as follows: a) temperature: 1150-1200oC for Wessels and 1050-1100oC for Groote Eylandt ores, b) methane concentration: 10-15 vol%, c) hydrogen concentration: above 30 vol%, (d) size: 1-3 mm. An addition of lime (10-15 wt% CaO) to the Groote Eylandt manganese ore increased melting temperature of slag and significantly increased the rate and extent of reduction at elevated temperatures.

Coal seams approximately 7 feet, 9 feet and 20 feet thick at depths of 250, 600 and 1,000 feet respectively were detected using high resolution seismic reflection techniques. Investigation of seismic profiles indicates that good data are required to delineate faulting with only 20 feet of throw but that faulting with 50 feet of vertical displacement can be detected with poor data. Data acquired from dynamite charges fired in water saturated media were clearly superior to that acquired using charges dry tamped in 10 and 20 foot holes.

THE WILLISTON basin is the largest known sedimentary basin on the North. American continent. Two-thirds of this large basin lies within the United States in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Less than 10 years after the first commercial oil discovery in North Dakota in 1951, the petroleum became one of the largest industries in the three-state area. Crude petroleum is now the most valuable mineral resource in the area. In 1960, the basin produced 39 million barrels of worth $100 million at the wellhead. Most of the 137 oil pools covered to date are in Paleozoic carbonates at depths ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 feet. The major producing fields, centered on the Cedar Creek anticline in Montana and the Nesson anticline in North Dakota, produce from depths below 6,000 feet. This report presents descriptions of all phases of the Williston basin petroleum industry, including leasing, exploration, geology, drilling, production, transportation, and refining. Engineering, physical, and production data, maps, and crude petroleum analyses for 137 separate oil pools are included.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

O nível de inclusões presentes no aço líquido interfere diretamente na qualidade das placas produzidas por lingotamento contínuo e são determinantes na formação de defeitos superficiais em produtos laminados a frio. A reoxidação do aço, bem como a passagem de escória do distribuidor para o molde, a interação do aço com o pó de cobertura do distribuidor e com o pó fluxante, têm forte influência na limpidez das placas originadas no processo de solidificação no molde. No presente trabalho, avaliaram-se as inclusões formadas durante o início do processo de lingotamento contínuo para aços de ultra baixo teor de carbono, sob três diferentes condições de adição do pó de cobertura do distribuidor, além da própria condição padrão. O objetivo do estudo é reduzir a quantidade das inclusões e consequentemente, os defeitos superficiais em placas iniciais, por meio da relação com o teor de oxigênio no veio da máquina de lingotamento contínuo. Tal investigação visou fornecer informações para alterações nas condições do processo para melhoria da qualidade do produto final.

The Telfer main dome open pit is operated by Newcrest Mining Limited at a current production rate of 50 Mt/a from a pit dimension compromising 2 km strike length, 1 km width and 250 m depth. As part of the refeasibility of the Telfer operation undertaken early this decade, Newcrest identified that an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation along with an increased scale of open pit would support a new plant targeting the processing of gold and copper ore at 17 Mt/a rates. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 and broke into the open pit in late 2009. This situation is unique across the mining industry where a cave breakthrough was planned and occurred within an active large open pit operation. The SLC broke though into the west side of the Main Dome open pit into a specially prepared bench that was left at the 5384 RL of cut-back stage 3. A main haulage ramp is within 100 m from the edge of the cave breakthrough zone and this ramp passes down to the active levels which are progressing toward the 5200 RL. This paper presents insight into the mine planning and risk management associated with continued operation of the open pit operation while an active SLC breaks through. The cave breakthrough presents unique areas for risk management as there is potential for rapid propagation and subsidence. To support the undertaking, mine design and major hazard management planning has been carried out. Focus areas include; dual ramp system design, preloading the breakthrough area, monitoring of cave propagation and air gap using a seismic system and deep hole extensometers, wall stability and subsidence monitoring using radar and prism systems, and key trigger and response planning.

"Urban Mining is a term that is increasingly being used, and represents an appreciable source of secondary materials for the metals extraction industry, a source that does not incur mining costs, but does, at present, incur considerable disposal costs. Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD) is probably the most common of these materials, with an estimated global production of 8 million tonnes annually, of which 1 million tonnes is generated in North America. The contained annual metal value in EAFD at current prices is of the order of $6 billion, yet, apart from the zinc, virtually none of this is recovered.Despite many attempts over the years, with pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical or hybrid processes, currently the only commercially viable method of treating these materials is smelting in a Waelz Kiln (or a Rotary Hearth Furnace), which essentially recovers only the zinc, in an impure oxide form, and generates a secondary slag waste, which is still toxic and requires disposal. This paper describes the development of a chloride-based treatment process to recover all components of the EAFD in a marketable form, which centres around the novel hydrochloric acid recovery and recycle operation. Laboratory, miniplant and pilot plant data are presented, leading to the definition of a viable process flowsheet enabling the recovery of pure iron and zinc products (the principal components of EAFD), together with secondary products such as copper, silver, lead, cadmium, magnesium and manganese. A rigorous mass-energy balance is used to examine the preliminary economics involved."

A phase in strip mining of bituminous coal is the overturning of the surface of the land. The ;purpose of this report is to acquaint the operators and others interested in stripping with the work that has been done in certain States to reclaim the surface of land from which the coal has been removed by this method of mining. The preparation of this manuscript follows an extensive study of the subject in the field in the course of which a large number of strip mines were visited. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The information used in the report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the operators of the mines visited, State officials and educational institutions, and others interested in the subject.

The most important parameters affecting the solubility of ulexite (sodium calcium borate) in H2SO4 were found to be reaction temperature and solid:liquid ratio, in that order. Dissolution increased with increase in temperature and stirring speed and with decrease in solid:liquid ratio, particle size and acid concentration, the last effect as a result of decreased precipitation of CaSO4 on unreacted particles. Optimum conditions, in which around 99.5% of the ulexite could be dissolved, were a reaction temperature of 60 degrees C, a solid:liquid ratio of 1:8 g/ml, an acid concentration of 8 mol/l, particle size smaller than 425 micrometres, a stirring speed of 52.33/s, a reaction time of 1 800 s, a calcining time of 3 600 s and a calcining temperature of 170 degrees C. These conditions, determined by the Taguchi method, are reproducible in a commercial production environment

An industrial port complex was constructed on the west coast of Leyte Island The work was started in December 1981 and completed in May 1984. This port complex includes a 665 m long wharf and can accommodate vessels ranging from a 60,000 DWT ore carrier to a 4 000 DWT general cargo ship. It now handles materials for and products from a copper smelter with an annual capacity of 130,000 t and a fertilizer plant with an annual capacity of 900,000 t. The Wharf structures consist mainly of interlocked steel pipe piles, steel sheet piles and steel pipe Piles. Material handling equipment such as unloaders, shiploaders, etc. were installed on the wharf. Site survey, planning, engineering design and construction aspects of the port development are discussed in this paper with particular emphasis on the wharf structure.

MINFO has been developed to serve as a frontend for three databases created to store basic minerals information gathered during the minerals resource assessment conducted by U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) for the Malheur and Jordan resource areas of southeastern Oregon(MJRA). The primary database is the Minerals Location Inventory (MLI.DBF) which contains of information assembled from field work performed during this project, the USBM Minerals Availability System/Mineral Information Location System(MAS/MILS) database, the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral lndustries(DOGAMT) Mineral Information Location(MILOC) database, and the U.S. (Geological Survey(USGS) Mineral Resource Database System(MRDS), In addition, assay results are contained in the geochemical database (ELEMENTS.DBF) and modified X-ray diffraction analysis information is contained in the minerals database (MINOR.M.DBF). MINFO includes four types of program modules: ? Enter/Edit Data was developed to allow the addition of new information and to encourage correction of errors by providing a convenient means of entering and editing data and a large degree of automatic checking and filtering of entries. ? ACAD/DBF Link links each site symbol posted on the map in the drawing file to a record in the database. This provides the user with the ability to use a mouse or other pointing device to graphically select a site for viewing and editing. Edits are performed directly in the database file, ? Reports contains 7 formats of data output for creating files for printing, transfer to other database formats, and exporting to other software packages such as spreadsheets and word processing programs. ? Maps includes 5 programs for creating AutoCAD script files which can be used to create maps of selected information in conjunction with AutoCAD. Mineral location mapping files derived from MLI.DBF can be created in 2 formats. Mapping files can be generated from each of the 2 sets of geochemical analyses contained in ELEMENTS.DBF. X-ray diffraction analyses can also be translated into instructions for creating and posting piecharts at sampling sites.
