Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Tree bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Restorable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

In this study, the flotation performances of ethoxycarbonyl thionocarbamate (ECTC), dialkyl thionocarbamate (DATC) and xanthate copper sulfide collectors are compared by the structure-reactivity relationship using generalized perturbation theory and density functional calculation at the B3PW91/6-31G(D) level. The electron-donating power of xanthates is strong and, therefore, xanthates can strongly react with metal cation on the surfaces of copper and iron sulfide minerals through the formation of normal covalent bonds. This explains the poor selectivity of xanthates and also the high pH levels (above 13) required for the flotation separation of copper/iron sulfide minerals. DATCs are more selective for copper sulfide flotation, particularly against gangue iron sulfides. Although less powerful than xanthates, DATCs can perform copper/iron flotation separation at lower operating pH (commonly at pH levels below 11.5). ECTCs use an ethoxycarbonyl replacing an alkyl N-substituent in DATCs. The presence of the ethoxycarbonyl group effectively changes the functional group of collector from -C(=S)NH- to -C(=S)NHC(=O)-. The strong electron-withdrawing ethoxycarbonyl group adjacent to the C=S group decreases the electron density of the sulfur atom, which improves ECTC?s selectivity against iron sulfide minerals at slightly alkaline conditions. The lowest unoccupied molecular orbit (LUMO) of ECTC, which is constituted by the pz-orbit of every atoms in the conjugate -O-C(=O)-N-C(=S)-O- group and which is pleased with accepting richly d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) from the (t2g)6(eg)3Cu(II) or t6e4Cu(I) configuration of copper cation on the surfaces of copper sulfide minerals, resulted in the formation of dative p-bond. The iron atom, which has a (t2g)6Fe(II) or (t2ga)3(ega)2 Fe(III) configuration on the surfaces of iron sulfide minerals (Fe(III) is the predominant composition at alkaline conditions), has difficulty in offering its d-orbital electrons (feedback electrons) to ECTC?s LUMO. ECTC collectors are powerful for copper sulfide minerals and very selective against iron sulfides, which has been further confirmed by UV spectra and bench-scale and industrial-scale flotation tests.

Allmand exhibited its LSC 100Light Sequence Commander, the mining industry’s first automatic lighting and command control system. The system is available with all of Allmand’s portable light towers. The LSC100 uses a preset photocell sensor that allows the light tower to be automatically turned on or off. At dusk, the sensor engages the power unit and then activates the light. At dawn, the sensor automatically shuts off the light. The unit also features an eight-event digital timer that allows eight separate sequences daily. The LSC100’s sequenced light control ensures that the engine is started before the lights are turned on or off. This prevents possible generator damage that can occur if the unit is powered down under load. Also, a low-fuel shutdown sequence helps protect the generator from damage by automatically shutting down the unit when the fuel level reaches 10 percent. And the LSC100’s smart circuitry senses engine water temperature during startup, determines the glow-plug time requirement and schedules repeat intervals, if necessary, to start the diesel engine.

Limonite is a general term for a group of amorphous iron oxide and iron hydroxide materials. It is considered as one of the very refractory iron ore types due to its wide variation in chemical composition, iron content, moisture content and easily sliming in the course of comminution. Iron grade of test sample is 25.48%, the iron minerals are mainly limonite; and the gangue minerals consist of quartz and feldspar in majority, secondarily silicate minerals. In this test work, high intensity magnetic separation (HIMS)-cationic reverse flotation and magnetic roasting-low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) tests were conducted on limonite ore. The test results show that the concentrate with iron grade of 50.97% and recovery of 68.50% can be obtained by HIMS-cationic reverse flotation technique; while using magnetic roasting-LIMS technique, the better concentrate indexes of iron grade of 60.36% and recovery of 89.71% are achieved, and the iron grade of tailing is only 4.42%. Therefore, the magnetic roasting-LIMS technique is a better suitable method for beneficiation of low-grade limonite ore. The use of phosphate depressants in the cationic flotation of silica from francolite in the Florida phosphate industry is rarely practiced. The occasional use of gelatinized starch derivatives and pH adjustments to assure a slightly alkaline flotation feed slurry pH have been used in some processing plants to improve selectivity. This paper presents a preliminary laboratory comparison of several potential phosphate depressants for use with the flotation of siliceous phosphates. It was found that starch is ideal for floating fine (-35 mesh) silica from phosphate, while sodium tripolyphosphate may be the best for coarser (+35 mesh) feeds.

Lebanon used a TBM for the firsttime to excavate a tunnel in the country. A main beam TBM, built in 1979, bored the 3.8 m (12.5-ft) diameter by 4,020 m (2.5-miles) Madiq Tunnel. The TBM bored through karstic terrain of dolomitic limestone, limestone and marly-limestone rock having near horizontal beds with more than twelve faults crossing the axis of the tunnel. The TBM also encountered more than six major karst features, filled with various combinations of boulders, clay, void space and water. The excavation through these collapsed-breccia zones drastically slowed the TBM?s progress. When complete, which the Madiq Tunnel is a part, the Kesrouane Water Project along the coast will bring fresh and irrigation waters to the parched and heavily populated region north of Beirut. This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). The concept of using fluid dense media to separate heavy ore constituents from the lighter gangue dates back to 1858, when it was patented by Sir Henry Bessemer. Its use in coal did not begin until after 1917, however, when Chance invented a process (which bears his name) in which lighter coal floats in a suspension of fine sand in water while heavier refuse sinks. Conklin used fine magnetite in suspension as a medium for floating anthracite in 1922, DuPont designed a plant employing organic liquids in 1936, and Belknap used a solution of calcium chloride (which Bessemer had suggested, among other media) in 1937. Separation of magnetic media by magnetic separators from the suspensions in which they were carried was introduced in a Butler Brothers ore concentrator pilot plant in 1937. The media first used were crushed steel and various grades of ferrosilicon. Since 1940, when American Cyanamid used magnetic separators to recover and clean magnetite in a coal washing circuit, virtually all heavy medium circuits have been of that type. As long as static baths are employed, as they are in the processes above, coal smaller than 9.5 mm or 6.4 mm cannot be cleaned economically in heavy medium. The settling velocities of the fine material are very low, and consequently the time required to separate the lighter coal from the heavier refuse becomes excessive. In addition, stray currents in the vessel and the upward velocities induced to keep media solids in suspension affect the finer solids to the degree that physical size becomes a more important factor than specific gravity.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted laboratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter?s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag?s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector?s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing. Laboratory results show that nearly 100 percent of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector?s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

lmenite is a primary ore feed to the DuPont chloride process for the manufacture of titanium diox-ide pigment. We seek to determine ilmenite geochemistry as a function of original source and as-certain which ilmenites have chemistry most amenable to upgrading via iron-leaching (leucoxenization) and that have favorable, with respect to pigment manufacture, trace element content. Ilmenite geochemistry is a function of its primary origin and of subsequent alteration. Heavy mineral sand deposits may contain ilmenite from one or several dominant source rock(s). In addition, ilmenite may alter in the weathering environment, changing the major element compo-sition (iron-leaching) and certain of the minor element content. A primary objective is to classify ilmenites in relation to origin in order to fingerprint source rocks in provenance determination. The changes in trace element chemistry during alteration are also investigated. A “decision tree” is developed to classify ilmenite types and source rock origins. Ultimately, with those methods and by amassing a database of ilmenite types from worldwide locations, it should prove possible to determine ilmenites (and their sources) more susceptible to iron leaching in the weathering en-vironment. Such ilmenites, enhanced in their titanium content, are the preferred ore targets. The method used is electron microprobe analyses at elevated conditions of voltage, cur-rent, and counting time to enable higher precision. In-situ ilmenites from igneous, metamorphic, and altered rocks (saprolites) are analyzed. Initial foci for sedimentary ilmenites are restricted provenance (approaching monogenetic, examples from Spain, Portugal) and polygenetic prove-nance (Denmark). Altered ilmenites, including the DuPont Florida ore, are used to characterize the chemistry of leucoxenization. Trace element concentration, detectability, and cost considera-tion, led to focus on Mn, Mg, V, Cr, and Nb to develop a classification scheme validated by dis-criminant analysis and “classification-regression trees”. Results show a high degree of success for restricted provenance study and an acceptable one for polygenetic provenance.

Let’s start off with your assessment of the mining industry. Today, the status of the mining industry is stronger than it has been over the previous few years. While mining continues to be a major part of the world’s economic foundation, the industry is gaining strength due to rebounding metals and minerals prices. And now, with these rising prices and the changes the industry instituted during the years when mining-related commodities were selling at low prices, our stronger, more productive and internationally competitive industry should flourish. Mining remains an essential business and the industry is far ahead of the game when it comes to the trend of globalization as a key to sustained growth. Also, the industry continues to realize increased productivity through technological innovations. And an increasing number of countries are moving towards capitalism, which opens doors for exploration and mining within their borders. After looking at all of these factors, I believe that the mining industry will only continue to gain momentum in the future.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the responses of a prototype smoke detector and a commercially available photoelectric smoke detector to smoke particles generated from various combustion sources. The prototype smoke detector combines optical scattering measurements with ionization chamber measurements in order to reduce/eliminate nuisance alarms due to the presence of airborne dusts or diesel exhaust particles. The commercially available smoke detector is designed for use in harsh environments where airborne dust represents a major problem due both to nuisance alarms and detector contamination. In the experiments, the responses of the two detectors were measured when exposed to smoke particles from the exhaust of a diesel engine and from a variety of fire sources, including wood, coal, styrene butadiene rubber, and No. 2 diesel fuel. For the solid fuels, data were obtained for both smoldering and flaming combustion. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results as they apply to early-warning fire sensors capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by either airborne dust or the products produced from diesel engines. Subsequent to these laboratory experiments, six smoke detectors were installed in an underground limestone mine for further testing and evaluation. Since the dawn of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extraction. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

The Florida Department of Transportation, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is studying the feasibility of a 1128 meter (3,700 foot) vehicular tunnel to provide direct access for Port of Miami traffic to/from I-395, I-95, SR-836 (Dolphin Expressway) and Miami International Airport. Both Bored and Immersed Tube tunnels were evaluated and re-evaluated for constructing two, two-lane, 11.9 meter (39-foot) diameter tunnels beneath the Main Shipping Channel lying between Watson Island and the Port of Miami on Dodge Island in Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida, USA. Bedrock Geology of South Florida is predominately very permeable, vuggy limestone with sand seams and occasional voids. Groundwater inflows in deep cut-and-cover excavations, tunnel buoyancy, grouting, maintenance of Port operations and potential/possible environmental impacts to Biscayne Bay were significant issues.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from high extraction mining in southern Illinois. The objectives of the monitoring program are to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a foundation during a subsidence event and to determine the capability of the tiltmeter to detect and monitor subsidence movements. Tiltmeter data were obtained on two foundations constructed near Sesser, IL. One of the 30-by 40- ft foundations was constructed with a typical poured concrete footing, the other with a rein- forced-concrete footing poured on top of pol yethylene sheeting placed over a compacted layer of sand. Soil-filled bins were placed on the perimeters of both foundations to simulate superstructure loads. Monitoring pins and tiltplates were installed on the corners and midpoints of the footing. Additional survey points were established on the five-acre site to track the mining advance. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tilt- meter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations is demonstrated.

Cable shovels are used for primary excavation in in-situ and/or pre-fragmented formations in surface mining operations. Poorly fragmented hard rock formations and random occurrence of hard boulders in soft formations cause extreme variability of material diggability, resulting in varying shovel stress loading. The stress loading of a shovel’s front-end assembly could result in fatigue failure. Conventional design process, which uses physical shovel simulation studies, is very costly and time consuming for achieving statistically significant results. In this paper, rigid and flexible multi-body dynamic theories are used to develop component stress loading and deformation models of the cable shovel, and solved in the ADAMS/NASTRAN/FLEX environments. Detailed simulation experiments are carried out to examine the performance, reliability, durability and efficiency of the P&H 4100A under varying in-situ formation conditions. The results show areas of high stress fields with a maximum stress of 313.31 MPa at node 441 within the hoist rope. The reliability of the results is confirmed by comparing existing test data. The study is significant because it provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

Deep tunnels have been used for decades for the temporary storage of large volumes of urban runoff, both storm water and combined sewer overflow (CSO). Tunnels are attractive because they reduce surface disruption and do double duty as storage and conveyance systems, collecting overflows from multiple locations and transporting them for treatment to various facilities. Like any hydraulic system, however, there are dynamic effects that must be fully understood during the design phase so that the final constructed product does not have unintended negative consequences. Preliminary sizing of storage tunnels is typically based on the total volume required. For example, if studies have determined that a volume of 56.8 ML (15 million gal) will provide the intended level of control, then that figure can be used, along with a preliminary idea of the desired tunnel length, to compute the required diameter. Of course, filling a long tube with water from various points along the way is not at all the same as pouring water into a bucket, and these dynamic effects require additional attention from design engineers. The rapid filling of storage tunnels can lead to the formation of bores, which are essentially moving walls of water. An open channel bore can build in height until it reaches the crown of the tunnel, at which point it becomes a pipe-filling bore. Figure 1 depicts both kinds of bores moving upwards in a rapidly filling tunnel. Bores can strike the ends of tun-nels with tremendous force, driving water and entrained air upwards into dropshafts and creating strong pressure surges in portions of the tunnel that are already filled. If the hydraulic surges are high enough to reach grade, they can cause overflows and/or damage structures at the surface. Trapped air pockets can occur through several phenomena, including the reflection of bores off dropshaft structures and the occurrence of ?premature pressurization.? The latter refers to the situation where the inflow to a tunnel is increasing more rapidly than the tunnel can convey it, such that the pipe becomes surcharged at an upstream point while points downstream are still flowing as an open channel. These air pockets are a great nuisance as they migrate toward points in the tunnel where they can rise to the surface, which are often shafts that are already filled with water (Fig. 2). The ?geyersing? that results can be hazardous and costly.

Published information discussing uranium mine radon daughter controls and related costs was examined and used to develop an estimated (projected) cost per ton for any level of control. Results show a clear power function increase of cost for conventional dilution ventilation as the annual exposure limit is lowered. Projections can be made using any assumed changes in consumer price index (CPI) and radon daughter working level months exposure limit. Bounds on the estimated costs are provided, and applicability of the final equation is discussed.
