The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

Optimizing final pit limits for stochastic models provides access to geologic and economic uncertainty in the pit optimization stages of a mining project. This paper presents an approach for optimizing final pit limits for a highly variable and geologically complex gold deposit. A heuristic pit optimizer is used to manage the effect of geological uncertainty in the resources within a pit shell with multiple uncertainty rated solutions. The uncertainty rated pit shells follow the meanvariance criterion to approximate the efficient frontier for final pit limits. Stochastic dominance rules are then used in a risk management framework to further eliminate sub-optimal solutions along the efficient frontier. This results in a smaller set of final pit shells that could be further analyzed for production scheduling. Additionally, the original solutions are analyzed for changes in the mining limits and two regions are targeted as potential regions for further exploration.

With construction underway on the 22.5 km (14 mile) Initial Segment of the Link Light Rail transit system in Seattle (including the one-mile EPB-driven running tunnels and mined station at Beacon Hill), the Sound Transit Board on May 20, 2004 voted on selection of a preferred route for an approximately eight-mile extension northwards from the central business district to Northgate, and authorized immediate start of advanced conceptual/preliminary engineering and geotechnical exploration programs scheduled to be completed in Spring 2005. The extension includes approximately914 m (30,000) route-feet of bored running tunnels, a mined station with platform level approximately 60 m (200 ft) below grade, three (possibly four) cut-and-cover stations and a cut-and-cover cross-over structure, as well as an aerial terminal station at Northgate and other line-section below-grade and aerial structures. All tunneling will be in glacial soils.

The protection of miners, equipment, and infrastructure is discussed. While the primary focus of the described technology is to prevent miners from being injured, struck-by, or crushed by heavy equipment; another major benefit realized is also the protection of equipment and infrastructure. An attempt is made to define and classify the systems used to provide proximity detection and warnings as well as collision detection and avoidance. Information about the speed of vehicles and human operator response time can be a factor in the choice of what type of system and what features are needed to properly address the needs. How the technology adjusts to compensate for various vehicle speeds, while maintaining the same level of protection is noted. The statistics which justify the need of miner protection are provided. The primary system components required, what attributes they feature, and how they respond in the environment, is briefly highlighted. The physics behind the danger zone marker technology and what makes it so robust and reliable is established. Examples of a few mining applications and specific operational modes are provided for both surface and underground.

Creating projects to reach a goal is not new to American industry. In fact, all major construction projects, from skyscrapers to bridges, are completed using similar project management techniques. However, modern project management is relatively new. It was not formalized until 1962, when NASA and the US Department of Defense recognized the need to develop uniform project management procedures throughout the aerospace industry (Moder, Phillips and Davis, 1983). This management method was not introduced to the mining industry until the early 1970s (Britton, 1983). Project management typically follows an organized, four-stage process —definition, planning, implementation and control.

Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve's Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company's large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve's initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve's operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins. A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

In 2005, Black & Veatch Corporation began designing a raw water conveyance system for San Luis Obispo County from Lake Nacimiento to the city of San Luis Obispo. The first element of the water transfer system will be a raw water pump station and lake tap. The wet well of the pump station will consist of a concrete lined shaft approximately 180 feet deep constructed in the very incompetent sandstone of the Vacqueros Formation. The lake will be wet tapped at approximately 172 feet below grade using a slurry earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The 48 to 72-inch finished diameter microtunnel will be approximately 500 feet in length. Construction is scheduled to begin in the winter of 2007.

With all of the unknowns associated with tunnel construction, how does a contractor choose a roadheader? This paper presents a review of several models of roadheaders being used in today?s tunnel projects. The features of different models of roadheaders are presented and compared. Roadheader size and cutter power generally determine which roadheader is best for a particular job. We will also present a model for matching features of the roadheader to the anticipated ground conditions such that the most efficient machine is selected for the project.

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

Introduction Joints often have profound effects on elastic properties and strength of rock masses and therefore on rock slope stability. In surface mine slopes, joints are usually too numerous to be taken into account individually, so an equivalent properties approach is necessary. Previous work that treats a jointed rock mass as an equivalent composite material of joints and intact rock between resulted in excellent agreement between estimated and true rock mass elastic moduli in case of fully persistent joints (e.g., Pariseau, 1999) Rock mass failure mechanisms on joints and through intact rock were retained obviating the need for an equivalent rock mass strength. Impersistent joints, which are not continuous on a joint plane, can be accommodated (Pariseau, 2003). However, slope stability analysis of a large, deep copper mine indicated a need for computational efficiency even in two-dimensional analysis of vertical sections through pit walls (Puri, 2006). The analyses by the popular finite element method used small elements of bench size near the pit slopes and much larger elements away from the pit walls. The reasons for the graded meshes were numerical quality (small elements) and computational economy (large elements). Small elements contained only a few joints, while the larger elements contained hundreds of joints and led to impractical computation run times (days!). A new modeling procedure that recognizes sufficiently large elements as representative volume elements (REV’s) overcomes this obstacle. A companion improvement recognizes the concept of a representative area element (RAE) in association with joint impersistence and the probability that joint material occupies a considered site. Both are steps towards greater model realism and a practical slope stability analysis procedure. Consider the open pit mine photo shown in Figure 1(a), a companion plan view in Figure 1(b), and the problem of slope stability where high slope angles favor economics but low slope angles favor safety. These competing factors in surface mining generally result in some sections of the mine that have unstable slopes that require monitoring and perhaps mitigating action to improve stability. Although stability of a given section may not be easy to quantify with a single number, useful design guidance can be obtained from a finite element analysis of a proposed mining sequence leading to future pit slopes and profiles. The presence of water from rain and snow melt indicates a need for a coupled analysis that links water pressure, effective stress and total stress (Schmelter, 2001).

This study investigates the use of a horizontally- baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feedrate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

Following three major mining accidents in 2006, the MINER Act of 2006 was enacted by the U.S.Congress. The U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration subsequently released the Final Rule on Refuge Alternatives for Underground Coal Mines, which required every underground coal mine to install refuge alternatives to help prevent future fatalities of trapped miners in the event of a disaster. The following paper documents the research that was performed on a structural wall to be used in conjunction with a breathable air system to create a refuge alternative. A 103.4-kPa (15-psi) safe haven polycarbonate wall for use in underground coal mines was designed and modeled using finite element modeling in ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. The successful safe haven wall design was modeled for an actual underground coal mine environment using the explicit finite difference formulation program FLAC3D to determine the responses of the wall and surrounding strata within a mine. A full-scale design was fabricated and installed in an underground coal mine to determine any construction constraints and as a final step in proof of concept for the safe haven wall design. This paper is meant to introduce the reader to a new wall concept to be used in conjunction with current technology.

Although vegetation can be successfully established on fine taconite tailings, innovative approaches are needed to reclaim the coarse tailings used for dam construction. Through a series of cooperative projects with various government agencies and industries, EVTAC has been able to develop a unique closure plan. This plan will not only meet current reclamation standards, but also provide mitigation for a disturbed wetland and possibly create a tree plantation in the interior of the basin. By using waste products and exchanging materials, reclamation of the entire basin will be accomplised in a cost effective manner.

The design of separation circuits can be a complex, labor-intensive and costly process. While the engineer?s experience along with extensive data sets and simulation are crucial tools for determining the final solution, a more fundamental approach is suitable to compare preliminary options and reduce the number of potential alternatives. In light of this need, the authors have developed the Circuit Analysis Reduction Tool (CART?). This software package relies on the fundamental principles of linear circuit analysis; however, the solution methodology has been streamlined to automatically incorporate stream splitting and unique separation performance for each unit. The resulting tool allows preliminary analysis of circuit designs without the need of detailed feed characterization. In addition to the basic analytical approach, this paper supports the veracity of the methodology with several simulated examples for various separation models.

Studies were carried out to determine whether filtration rate changes observed in an iron ore concentrator were due to variations in particle shape. It was confirmed that ores mined from different locations differed in filtration rates by as much as 60%. However, when image analysis was used to quantify the shapes of the individual particles in the filtration feed, it was found that the particle shapes showed almost no variation, and the shapes did not correlate with the filtration rate. It was also determined that the filtration rate variations were not caused by changes in particle size distribution. These results suggest that the differences in filtration rate are due to factors other than size and shape, such as surface chemistry.

A state of the art computer simulation package, named UTAH-MODSIM is being developed. This package can run on a mainframe (eg. UNIVAC) as well as on a microcomputer (eg. IBM/PC with at least 512 kBytes of core memory). Friendliness was the major concern in developing this software. The user simply generates a complete flowsheet by presenting the flowsheet on a graphics terminal. This flowsheet defines the circuit to be simulated. With the minimum required data, the user can obtain a complete mass and water balances within a few minutes. Moreover, this package will provide scale-up and capital cost information of specified equipment relevant to design. In order to illustrate the utility of this software, three design examples are given. They are: a) A typical multistage crushing plant. b) A reverse closed grinding circuit comparing one stage with two stage classification. c) A standard closed grinding circuit suitable to liberate a specified fraction of chalcopyrite from a copper ore.

Attractive geology does not guarantee mining investment if a region’s policies are bad, according to mining executives surveyed in the Fraser Institute’s seventh Annual Survey of Mining Companies. Companies responsible for a combined US$642.4 million in international exploration (during 2002) rated the policy attractiveness and mineral attractiveness of mining jurisdictions around the world. Jurisdictions like Chile, Australia, Quebec and Nevada bolster their attractive geology with mining-friendly policies, the report said. These locations do well on the overall investment attractiveness index. On the other hand, jurisdictions like British Columbia and Indonesia, each with excellent geology, are hurt by their policies, which have lowered their score.
