The Barrick Zaldivar mine is an openpit, heap-leach copper mine in Region II of northern Chile at an elevation of 3,300 m (10,826 ft), approximately 1,400 km (870 miles) north of Santiago and 175 km (109 miles) southeast of the port city of Antofagasta. In 2006, Zaldívar produced 307 million lbs of copper, with reserves estimated at 5.7 billion lbs. The mine uses conventional methods of openpit mining: Pure cathode copper is produced by three stages of crushing and stacking the ore, followed by heap leaching and bacterial activity to extract copper from the ore into solution. A solvent extraction and electrowinning process then removes the copper from solution and produces the cathode copper. A flotation plant also recovers copper contained in the fine fraction of the crushed ore. In 2006, an existing A-frame structure that covered copper ore from the mine?s secondary crushing operation was damaged beyond repair. The material delivery configuration of this original structure had the conveyor carrying incoming ore directly over the low roof to drop ore into the building at its peak, and ore trickling from the sides of the conveyor had accumulated on the roof, overloading it. A better solution had to be found, and fast: First, the Chilean Commission does not permit uncovered piles of this type since the extremely fine material leads to serious pollution problems. Second, Barrick Zaldivar is very concerned about worker safety, and the amount of dust created by the uncovered pile was not acceptable. Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries and is often used to improve organisational safety. This study was undertaken to examine the content of past incident investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of five elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of three Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed.

Aggregate resources consist of sand and gravel, and crushed stone. They are large-tonnage, bulk-minable mineral commodities that are used in construction and industrial activities (Tepordei, 1999, 2001).Rates of aggregate production, use and mine permit approval in the mid-Atlantic region differ by population density. These rates are influenced by economic and human factors, such as demand, costs, land availability and community opposition. In some areas, the local availability of aggregate is limited. This is due to the lack of suitable local source materials for aggregate, the loss of potential high-quality aggregate resource production sites by preemptive land development and restrictive zoning (resource sterilization), and the difficulty of developing and permitting production sites for aggregate.

To reduce concentrate dewatering and drying costs, the Concentrator Division at Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. investigated available filtration technologies. Numerous methods were explored, including: drum, disk, belt, pressure, hyperbaric, and ceramic media filtration. An economic evaluation of the individual filtration technologies indicated the advantages of ceramic media filtration for Morenci concentrates. This paper discusses the technological development culminating in the first full scale application of ceramic media disk filters in North America. Low moisture contents are obtained at high production rates and greatly reduced operating costs.

The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

The most common approach used in the mining industry for mineral resources modeling is to estimate the grades using ordinary kriging and report the recoverable resources based on this deterministic estimated model. Mineral resources calculated with kriging are a smooth representation of the actual distribution of grades and do not provide an assessment of uncertainty. Unlike kriging, simulation reproduces the variability of the grades in the mineral deposit and provides an assessment of uncertainty. Reporting mineral resources directly on high-resolution simulation results would assume perfect knowledge of the grade at the time of mining and selectivity at the scale of the data. There will always be uncertainty left at the time of mining, so assuming perfect knowledge of the grade in the future is incorrect. There are two concerns when geostatistical simulation is used for resources modeling: the information and the mining selectivity effects. A new framework for resource estimation is proposed with two separate modules to address those concerns. The information effect is accounted for by anticipating the additional production data that will be available at the time mining to guide the destination for the mined material. The mining selectivity effect is addressed by mimicking the grade control procedure to get mineable dig limits at a chosen selectivity, represented by a minimum mineable unit size. In addition to a prediction of recoverable resources that will be closer to the material mined in the future, the framework proposed provides an assessment of local and global uncertainty for risk management.

In the last few years major industrial companies have begun to realize the importance of Reliability as an enterprise strategy that, properly implemented, will improve financial performance. Typical results of an effective Enterprise Reliability Strategy include a 20% -50% reduction in maintenance cost accompanied by a 5% - 10%increase in real production capacity, with no capital investment in production equipment. One factor fueling the race to acquire and implement enterprise reliability is the pressure for companies to be increasingly cost-effective and competitive in global markets. In a recent study, Asset Productivity: The Next Wave, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)stated that, “In order to compete for funds, companies must offer investor returns that are competitive with other opportunities. Alternative investments such as dot-com and others with non-traditional business models have raised the bar.” (APDF version of the study can be downloaded at www.bcg.com). BCG views asset productivity as the most powerful mechanism for increasing shareholder return. The author believes that the most effective way to increase Fixed Asset Productivity is to maximize asset utilization by increasing the Reliability of the Assets and the associated processes. Developing and implementing an ERS requires significant effort and knowledge. Most companies have difficulty finding a sufficient supply of these valuable commodities to implement an ERS Program internally. Many companies also struggle with figuring out how to get started and what direction to proceed.

Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43 m Main Beam TBM and back-up system was completed on September 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province of China. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, utilizing a method called Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA). The Jinping-II hydroelectric project features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18 km long, two of which will be excavated by TBMs and two by drill and blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2 m TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. This paper addresses the following topics: ¦Project description including geology and terrain; ¦The decision process leading to onsite first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned; ¦Design features of the TBM and back-up system; and ¦Operational history from startup to the writing of the paper.

Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be on Sept. 12, 2009 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The five inductees are: Paul A. Bailey, 82, Richard T. Moolick, 89, William Braden and Alonzo Pawling and Henry Harnischfeger. Paul A. Bailly was president of Bear Creek Mining Co., the U.S. exploration subsidiary of Kennecott Copper, from 1961 to 1967. In 1968, he joined Occidental Petroleum Corp. and was tasked with creating the company?s international mining division, Oxymin, which he led as president through 1983. During his distinguished career, Bailly participated in numerous significant mineral discoveries, developed a new exploration philosophy and made important additions to the mineral exploration literature. William Braden was the first to recognize the immense potential of the El Teniente orebody in Chile. He founded Braden Copper Co. and developed the El Teniente Mine which now, 100 years later, remains the world?s largest underground copper mine. Braden?s endeavor survives to-day as the El Teniente division of the Chilean state copper company, CODELCO. T. (Dick) Moolick established a lasting legacy in the mining industry, first during a 35 year career with Phelps Dodge Corp. and then as the driving force in establishing the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville. The Hall of Fame and Museum ? a monument to the memory of the men and women who pioneered the discovery and development of the United States? natural resources ? has become one of the fi nest museums in the western United States.

Charleston Water System?s Daniel Island Extension Tunnel, initially thought to be the simplest of the four replacement tunnels to design and build, became the most challenging after the discovery of an unexpected 30-ft thick lens of sand in the normally consistent Cooper Marl while sinking a shaft on Daniel Island. This paper will explore the challenges involved with determining the extent of the unforeseen lens of sand, the accelerated boring program, and the redesign of the vertical alignment?keeping the alignment between the sand layer and the bottom of the Cooper River. It will describe how the challenges were overcome, and how the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor were able to team together to achieve the desired results.

The Galena mine is located astride the Polaris fault in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho. The surface installations are about a mile up Lake Gulch, the mouth of which is about 2.4 km (1 112 miles) west of the old town of Wallace. The mine had its beginnings when the first claims were located in the early boom days of the district in the 1880s and when the first underground ore bodies were opened up in 1917. During the ensuing 14 years, ore was mined from which were recovered 5.4 Mkg (12 million lb) of lead and almost 14.2 Mg (112 million oz) of silver. Workings consisted principally of a vertical shaft from surface to the 800 level and an offset underground shaft to the 1600 level, together with extensive lateral openings. High-grade silver-copper ore was discovered near the Silver Standard fault in the Sunshine mine, a few miles to the west, on the 1700 level in 1930. By 1937, the Sunshine and adjacent mines were producing silver-copper ore on a regular basis. In 1943 additional ore of a similar type was found along the Chester fault, to the east of the principal Sunshine workings. The interest of American Smelting and Refining Co. (renamed ASARCO in 1975) was aroused and the company's geologists determined that the Galena mine, idle since 1931, provided a geological environment in which similar ore might be found. After negotiations were initiated with the owners of the property, Callahan Zinc-Lead Co., the property in question was deeded to Callahan's wholly owned subsidiary, Vulcan Silver-Lead.

The phenomenon of surfactant adsorption at mineral surfaces is of significant importance in many particulate processes ranging from mineral flotation and enhanced oil recovery to pharmaceutics, paint technology and the casting of high quality ceramics. Stability of the dispersions is related not only to the amount of adsorbed surfactant but also to the structure of the adsorbed surfactant molecules at the interface. This structure greatly depends on the type of surfactant and the hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity of the surface. On hydrophobic surfaces surfactants adsorb regardless of surface charge by van der Waals/hydrophobic inter-actions with hydrocarbon chains accommodated at the surface. On the other hand, on hydrophilic surfaces the surfactants adsorb through electrostatic interactions with their polar moiety fixed at the surface. In the latter case, the electric charge of the surface and surfactant plays a crucial role in the surfactant adsorption process. The recently developed soft-contact Atomic Force Microscopy technique has revealed images of adsorbed surfactant structures at various interfaces. The adsorbed structures of a cationic surfactant (CTAB) and an anionic surfactant (SDS) are presented in this work for different concentrations at hydrophobic graphite and hydrophilic mica surfaces. Different types of micellar arrangements have been observed at these surfaces for surfactant concentrations around the critical micelle concentration. The structures are more ordered and well defined at the graphite surface than at the mica surface. These results have been correlated with the hydrophobicity of the surfaces as revealed by contact angle measurements.

Geotechnical conditions exposed by the phased exploration programs have had a major impact on the selection of excavation and support methods, dewatering requirements, size of openings, vertical alignment, and estimated cost of construction for the Beacon Hill Tunnel and Station section of the “Link” Light Rail. Beacon Hill is comprised of a very complex glacial geology, including numerous slickensided fractures, injected sand dikes, and multiple perched groundwater levels as revealed by a phased boring program and exposed in a test shaft. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) presents this complex geology along with a “tool box” of alternative additional support systems to accommodate the varying ground conditions during construction of the station excavation. Additional explorations will also be accomplished during construction to further refine the geotechnical interpretations and provide an opportunity to use pro-active ground improvement techniques to optimize the station excavation and support requirements.

Introduction US dependence on external energy sources is dangerous because of unstable political situations existing in key energy exporting countries. So, recent national energy policies call for increased reliance on domestic energy sources. Coal ranks as the most feasible domestic energy source due to its abundant reserves and continental distribution. But to efficiently extract these coal reserves, huge sums of capital funds are needed. Due to the depressed economy, lenders of capital funds are forced to be more stringent with loan applications. This results in fewer loans granted. In many cases, it is uncertain if funding can be obtained. Furthermore, the greatest level of domestic mine financing is expected to be in the coal sector. Demand for capital in the domestic coal industry is anticipated to increase 80% by 1990. The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York warns that these future needs cannot be met by the present capital markets. This article analyzes the current and expected situations of the capital markets available to the domestic coal industry, including: • current and expected future types of financing used in the domestic coal industry; • problems the domestic coal industry may encounter as it seeks capital; and • the future availability of capital funds as concluded from analysis of the first two items. Background Information Regardless of industry, all projects or ventures can be divided into four basic stages: generation; evaluation; selection; and execution. Within the mining industry, one can break down these stages to draw a clear picture of mine development, as shown in Fig. 1. Each successive stage has a corresponding risk level. This risk level defines the type of financing available to the mine operator. Mining Venture Risks A coal mining venture can be characterized by its unique blend of technical and financial risk. As the mine moves through different development stages, varying proportions of each of these risks are encountered. It is these risks that the lender evaluates to determine project suitability. For a coal mining venture, the major complexities generally occur with the technical risk. These include: • quantifying the coal reserves: • assessing the feasibility of the mining method; and • evaluating the design of the wash plant. The reserve risk is gauged by the amount of measured, mineable, and saleable reserves. The greater the latter amounts, the lower the risk. Secure title to the reserves plus title for any surface areas required are also of concern to the banker. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is constructing a stormwater storage facility (SSF) along Interstate 35W (I35W) south of downtown Minneapolis, MN. The project will provide storm surge capacity reducing the frequency with which major precipitation events result in flooding of I35W. The design consists of six, 42-foot diameter, 90-foot deep, adjacent underground shafts providing 14.7-acre feet of storage. Construction challenges include high groundwater with variable glacial outwash deposits. Constructability and ground variability were managed using construction manager general contractor (CMGC) project delivery. CMGC provides an environment for collaboration and innovation starting in the design phase and carrying through construction. This paper provides an overview of key efficiencies and collaboration examples implemented on the I35WSSF project which were aided by CMGC delivery.

The Western Mining Training and Translation Center is a consortium of four universities devoted to developing educational and training projects to reduce the incidence/accident rates in the mining industry. The center consists of Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Utah. It is fully funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The center manages 15 educational projects and one translation project. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) for Small Mines is an educational project managed by the University of Utah. The objectives of this project are to identify critical mine hazards, assess risks; outline procedures to reduce accident/incident rates in small mines in the western United States and to train mine workers and super-visors on HIRA in each participating mine. To accomplish these objectives, the HIRA personnel visited 15 small mines in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and California. At these mines, most operators were employing independent contractors to perform several tasks ranging from drilling, blasting and mucking of rock at the work site to hauling ore to a processing plant. The operation of diesel-powered equipment was one of the major tasks performed by the contractors. This article presents three case studies in which contract workers performed a number of tasks with no reportable incidents but did so unsafely. It also highlights the training received by most contractors, the constraints imposed upon them and the safety hazards to which they are exposed most frequently.

Asarco Incorporated’s Omaha, Nebraska refinery site and the City of Omaha’s downtown redevelopment projects are the perfect example of the marriage of the Brownfield and Sustainable Development strategies. Nebraska’s largest voluntary site remediation project created a focus point for redevelopment and has spurred over $1 billion in economic investment within a 1-mile radius of the site. Asarco was faced with options of very expensive and uncertain facility upgrades or a shutdown. Local leaders, Asarco, and regulators worked together to convert a controversial and complex site to a park-like redevelopment area with numerous long-term benefits to the City and the environment.

Introduction Fluorspar demand or consumption has been taken for granted in recent years, except for those that produce, market, or consume the commodity. Thinking used to be that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources. It created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The US and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. Goals for the government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. US production and distribution Fluorspar Fluorspar shipments from US mines reached an all-time high near the end of World War II in 1944 at 375 kt (413,800 st). Eighty-two mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) each, and 10 mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st.) each. Illinois supplied 43% of total shipments. Consumption in 1944 was 372 kt (410,200 st), of which 56% was used by steel producers and 32% by HF producers. This was the last year that US production exceeded US consumption. The post-World War II record for fluorspar shipments occurred in 1951 at 315 kt (347,000 st) 58 mines produced more than 453 t (500 st) and eight mines produced more than 9 kt (10,000 st).
