The principal impurities in some feldspar ores are titanium and iron which impart color and in turn degrade the quality of the ore. The mineralogical investigations indicate that titanium element originates from mainly rutile with small amounts of sphene. Conventionally, fatty acids and particularly sodium oleate are extensively used in the flotation of colored minerals from feldspar ores with reasonable success. In this study, new reagents, oleoyl sarcosine and hydroxamate have been used to float colored impurities before and after magnetic separation. Oleoyl sarcosine is found to exhibit better results compared to fatty acids and hydroxamate. The mechanism of the action is elaborated on the basis of experimental data.

Amax's Sleeper mine uses conventional cyanidation milling and heap leaching techniques to produce gold. Since milling operations commenced in March 1986, average ore processing rates have improved from the design rate of 455 t/d (500 stpd) to more than 720 t/d (795 stpd). Heap leaching was added to the process facilities in September 1986 at a design rate of 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) and current heap leaching rates exceed 2.7 kt/d (2950 stpd). Presented are descriptions of the Sleeper processing facilities with emphasis on the crushing and grinding circuits, a review of the selection of crushing and grinding equipment, and a summary of operating performance during the first 16 months of operations.

"While mines generally focus on achieving operational efficiency, creating shared value for all stakeholders is also a management goal. This includes taking a holistic view of their supply chains and increasing local participation. This paper examines the role of supply chain management in mine management; in particular the effect of a strong local supply chain on regional economic impacts. Using input-output analysis, the impact of a local supply chain on a mining sector’s regional economic impact is examined by increasing local sourcing (increasing local purchase percentage -- LPP) for 10 key commodities. An approach, based on multipliers and excess local capacity is used to identify key commodities. The impacts examined are sales, employment, labor income, and value added. The work is illustrated with stone mining and quarrying in Missouri. Ten percent increases in LPP of the key commodities, in this example, result in $4.1 million additional impact on the Missouri economy. This work can provide insight on how to better create shared value for all stakeholders. INTRODUCTION Little research has been published on improving mine supply chain management (SCM) to enhance regional economic impacts. Although some extensive academic research has explored the importance of an industries’ supply chain, not much is known about how a locally-based supply chain increases shared value in the resource sector. Across industries, traditional SCM is getting more and more complex. This is true of the mining sector as well. However, this increased sophistication is not directed towards increasing shared value for all stakeholders, particularly, the local communities. Further research is required to develop new SCM strategies that enhance local participation. One major point of difference between this work and traditional supply chain management is the inclusion of stakeholders’ shared value as a goal in SCM. Creating shared value has become a business goal in recent years (Porter and Kramer, 2011). The authors use input-output analysis (Leeuw, 2012) to evaluate the regional economic impacts of supply chain decisions, which is not part of traditional SCM. Although input-output analysis has been applied to SCM for decades, most of the research uses input-output analysis as a tool to advance an industries’ own operational efficiency (Accenture, 2014)."

Subsidence is a surface manifestation of the underground development and exploitation of minerals, and its impact on the environment is becoming of increased concern, particularly in the face of an accelerating demand for energy and minerals. In the United States, the state-of-the-art in subsidence prediction, control, and prevention and in subsidence-related damage abatement has not progressed to the level achieved in other countries. To bridge this gap, the Bureau of Mines, through its Mining Environmental Research program, is pursuing a comprehensive subsidence investigation, specifically designed to address major problems on the local, regional, and national level.

Although alumina constitutes about ii percent of the earth's crust, it is expensive to separate and purify for the production of aluminum with the exception off the alumina in bauxite. The United states has a variety of non-bauxite resources that could substitute for bauxite, including high alumina clays, alunite, dawsonite in oil shale, anorthosite, and nepheline syenite. Each of these resources are discussed from the standpoint of geology, geography, processing, potential recovery, and environmental problems. Potential by-products include silica from clays, potash and sulfuric acid from alunite, soda ash from dawsonite, and soda ash and potash from anorthosite and nepheline syenite.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. The ability to estimate that support is unnecessary for various dimensions of opening in certain rock mass environments is of particular relevance in the mining industry, where most excavations are not expected to remain open indefinitely. As Hoek1 observes: "the basic aim of any underground excavation design should be to utilize the rock itself as the principal structural material, creating as little disturbance as possible during the excavation process and adding as little as possible in the way of concrete or steel support". Approximately two hundred case records have been analysed for the purpose of determining the amount of permanent support normally used when a given span is excavated in known rock mass conditions Some thirty cases concerned unsupported openings. Excavations that can stand unsupported appear to have certain common characteristics as regards rock mass quality. However, the mechanical properties of the rock mass are not the only factors controlling the choice of design. The dimension of the opening (span or height) and the type of excavation are two important variables.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of phosphate minerals from siliceous ores. The process takes advantage of preferential adsorption and high reactivity of fatty acid collectors towards apatite over silica surfaces under slightly acidic conditions of pH 5-6.5. The process was successful in upgrading various phosphate samples from Florida and North Carolina containing 7.7-15.3% P205 and 62.3- 77.2% Insol to concentrates assaying 28.1-33.1 % P205 and 4.1-9.9% Insol with high P2O5 recovery of 81.8-92.2%. Depending on the type of silica impurities present one or more cleaning steps, with or without sodium silicate, would be required to improve the grade of the rougher phosphate concentrate.

Keeping an eye on the future while honoring the past, Frank McAllister, chief executive officer of Stillwater Mining Co., and life member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, gave the keynote address to a packed house during the 23rd National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Banquet in Leadville, CO on Sept. 11. McAllister?s company made news just days before the induction ceremony, when it was announced that Stillwater Mining would acquire Marathon PGM Corp. for $118 million (ME, Oct. page 14).

Exploration requires processing highly varying kinds and amounts of geologic information. Successful discovery dictates that this be done quickly with maximum confidence. Most phases of exploration are more or less applicable to computer reduction on a routine basis. The use of digital computers to reduce raw data into interpretable form, lets the exploration geophysicist concentrate on interpretation and presentation, and to consistently apply more sophisticated and comprehensive analytical techniques, not practical before. In applying these concepts for the past several years, various efficient programs have evolved which provide more complete evaluation of all data including the pro- vision for more unique solutions. This has resulted in greater refinement and ability to select the most advantageous drill sites in a minimum time at a minimum cost or, in rejecting as soon as possible a project on which additional effort is no longer justified. Practical examples of computer applications in magnetics (air and ground), induced polarization and resistivity are discussed.

The preparation of aggregates is a form of mineral processing which has been taken for granted for many years, mostly because of its lack of glamour when compared to the winning of metallic minerals from their ores. Many of the processes and equipment now used in the metallic mineral processing industries originated in the more prosaic preparation of aggregates. 'Their adaptation to metallurgical processes has led to developments both in their design, and in their use. Modern practice, has been so exacting in its demands that, in many cases, this improved technology is finding new applications in the very industry in which it originated the mineral aggregate industry, The low cost requirements, large tonnage capacities and complex specifications which govern the acceptability of its products have node modern aggregate processing a much different art than it was one or two generations ago. The basic conditions which govern the type and quality of mineral aggregates were presented in an addendum to a paper given at the San Francisco Meeting in 1959 by one of the authors.

In the underground type of mining operation, the finer portion of the waste material commonly is pumped as a hydraulic slurry to a tailings disposal pond. (1)* The tailings slurry is deposited via a pipe manifold system located around the perimeter of the pond. This method of deposition produces zoning because the coarser material tends to settle out immediately while the finer particles tend to remain in suspension and are deposited progressively nearer the center of the pond. The manifold system must be raised periodically as the pond fills with the tailings material. Over a period of time, this procedure will produce a zoned embankment known as a tailings dam. A typical pond and dam are shown in Figure 1. In plan view, the dimensions of tailings dams can be on the order of miles, with the height of the dam reaching 100 to 200 feet. Due to such factors as inadequate compaction, inherently low strength of the tailings material, and the possibility of high phreatic surface, many dams at some point become unstable, i.e., the factor of safety against a slope failure approaches 1.0. Remedial measures are required to improve the safety factor in order to prevent massive failure of the dam. In most cases, stability can be improved by effectively flattening the slope of the dam as shown in Figure 2, but this is not possible in every case. Occasionally, a tailings dam is constructed adjacent to a natural or legal boundary so that it is not possible to construct a conventional berm or to reduce the slope angle with earth moving equipment. Even a terracing process would require removal of the material and this may not be practical. In such a situation, an alternate scheme to improve stability must be found.

"INTRODUCTION Vanadium deposits in Arizona are distributed all across the state, from the rim of the Grand Canyon to the Tombstone mining district in the southeast corner of the state (Figure 1). The combined past production of vanadium from Arizona and New Mexico ranks second nationwide, after deposits in the Colorado Plateau In the northeast corner of the state, in the Carrizo Mountains and Monument Valley of Apache and Navajo Counties, vanadium was produced as a by-product of uranium in deposits of the Salt Wash and Shinarump members of the Morrison and Chinle formations, respectively. The production took place between 1943 and 1970. Another source of vanadium in Arizona occurs in vanadate deposits associated with supergene enrichment of base-metal vein and replacement deposits. The most important vanadate mineral is vanadinite, a chloro-vanadate of lead. Presently, there are no primary mines of vanadium in the United States. In 2012, a small production of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) was reported as a by-product of uranium at the White Mesa uranium mine in Utah1. This paper describes vanadate deposits in Arizona with emphasis in three districts, namely, the Mammoth, Globe-Miami and Banner districts.VANADIUM EPIGENETIC DEPOSITS: VANADATES Almost all vanadium epigenetic deposits occur as vanadates in oxidized zones of lead, zinc and copper veins and replacement deposits. Vanadinite, descloizite and mottramite are the most common minerals in vanadate deposits. Descloizite is a vanadate of lead, zinc and copper. Wulfenite, a molybdate of lead is also present. These minerals replace supergene base-metal minerals, form crusts on faces of open cavities, or are inter-grown with residual clays in pockets. The vanadium content in vanadate deposits is believed to have been leached from the country rock by ground-water and transported through porous rocks until precipitating as a relatively insoluble vanadium compound or until the solution evaporated. Precipitation was brought about by local concentrations of cations of divalent lead, zinc or copper. Lead is a constituent part of almost all of vanadate deposits and the vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) content in vanadate minerals seems to have a direct correlation with the content of lead in the hypogene mineral. Vanadate deposits are restricted almost entirely to the oxidized parts of vein or replacement deposits. It is rare that oxidized zones extend past 100 ft from the surface. Vanadate deposits are largely restricted to tropical and temperate zones and regions of dry climate. Arizona and New Mexico have the largest concentration of vanadate deposits in North America."

Introduction A longwall mining demonstration currently in progress in the Herrin (No.6) Coal Member near Benton, Illinois, involves the extraction of three adjacent panels by the longwall method. The first panel was completed in May, 1977. The Illinois State Geological Survey is involved in this project for two reasons: (1) to detail the geology of the roof and relate the geologic features to the behavior of the roof during mining operations, and (2) to study the nature and occurrence of coal balls (carbonate petrifactions of peat) encountered during this demonstration. General Geology of Area The stratigraphic sequence of beds immediately above the No. 6 Coal in this area, ranging from oldest to youngest, is: gray shale (Energy Shale Member), black carbonaceous shale (Anna Shale Member), and argillaceous limestone (Brereton Limestone Member) (figure 1). In some areas of the mine, where one of these units may rest directly on the coal, one or more of the members is absent from the stratigraphic sequence. The nature of roof for the area is shown in figure 2. It is greatly exaggerated in the vertical direction. The Walshville Channel, 11.3 km west of this mine, was a river at least in part deposited at the same time as the coal. The gray shale wedge on top of the coal, which thins away from the channel, is thought to represent an overbank deposit of mud from the channel. The next layer deposited on top of the gray shale, and on the coal not covered by gray shale, is the black carbonaceous shale, believed to represent a mud deposited in a brackish environment. Underground construction environments, especially those with limited airflow such as shafts, cross passages, and stations, necessitate effective dust control. This requires combining existing measures with adapted approaches for more efficient and productive operations, cleaner jobsites, and decreased worker exposure to contaminated air. This paper will discuss new configurations and trends in dust collection on Australasian infrastructure projects including WestConnex, Melbourne Metro Tunnel and City Rail Link, all of which have applied innovative methodologies for mobile at-source dust collection. Mobile dust collectors can be track-mounted dust collectors operate alongside equipment, use hydraulic stepping systems to advance with roadheaders, or compact castor-mounted units are used within cross passage confines.

Event cameras are used for their performance in high dynamic-range lighting conditions which are canonical to active mining environments. Direct labeling of event-based image data to train a model to perform semantic segmentation using traditional methods is slow and error-prone. This study proposes a framework to use roughly hand-labeled color images from a mine as an input to an intermediary probabilistic algorithm called alphamatting to generate a ground-truth data set. These high-fidelity labels can be used to train a semantic segmentation model to differentiate the support strap from the roof. This model can then be leveraged to segment an event-based scene to enable autonomous roof bolting. This pipeline has been shown to achieve an accuracy of 88% with a false positive rate of 3%.

Mining companies have sharpened their refocus on their tailings management strategies in recent years. Mining companies with tailings storage facilities that use the upstream construction method have been challenged to track the evolution of industry standards, assess risks, revise design, and communicate design revisions with regulators. While many aspects of best practices and industry standards have evolved in recent years as an attribute of continual improvement, the controlling standard in the design of many upstream dams is understanding the foundational strengths of hydraulically deposited tailings. Following best practices and industry standards, Hibbing Taconite Company managed by Cleveland-Cliffs, began the re-evaluation of foundation strengths underlying a system of upstream dams at the company’s iron ore mine tailings storage facility in northern Minnesota. Initial steps in the re-evaluation require reanalysis of design parameters and recommendations by the Engineer of Record to the Owner, which was followed by a series of meetings with the Technical Review Board to determine an initial path forward. Once a path forward and preliminary design parameters were determined, the Owner engaged with the State Dam Safety Engineer to discuss and seek approval of the plan. With continuous regulatory engagement throughout the process, further refinement of the design parameters for the hydraulically-placed tailings foundations underlying upstream dams began with field and lab geotechnical investigations. Following a review of risk assessments and trigger actions response plans, Hibbing Taconite revised its tailings storage facility operating plans and budget for the coming years. Based on the findings of the re-evaluation, reanalysis, and refinement of parameters, a paradigm shift was realized with the hydraulically placed tailings foundation strengths underlying the upstream system of dams. This paper explores the path that the Hibbing Taconite Company followed to understand the paradigm shift and construct downstream improvements. The plan involved tailings re-characterization, dam design revisions, operating plan reconciliation, budget revisions, wetland permitting, dam safety permit amendments, storm water prevention plans, borrow materials studies, new concrete decant structures and the pursuit to recognize and be consistent with industry standards.

This paper, in its first part, compares the profile and economic weight in the extraction of industrial minerals and aggregates to the so called conventional mining activities (metals, coal, gas and oil extraction) in Brazil. In its second part, a descriptive analysis of the present situation of the education in Brazil is made, emphasizing the graduation and post-graduation formation especially in engineering. The curricular structure of the schools that prepare the mining workforce is discussed and the presence of specific subjects in industrial minerals is evaluated. Finally, considerations are made on the actions being taken in the main universities and companies, aiming to improve the formation of the specialized workforce. The Brazilian mining production, comparing 2010 to 2011 showed an expansion of more than 3% (IBGE, 2012). Not bad, but nothing to do with the 13% growth between 2010 and 2009 (influenced by a recovery effect from the 2008 commodities? nightmare). The commodities that had a rising behavior were titanium, gypsum, nickel, graphite, bauxite, phosphate, chrome and chrysotile. All of them were eclipsed by the impressive growth of iron ore production. Some decreases could be noticed, eg. in zinc, kaolin, magnesite and salt production (DNPM, 2012). In fact, the mining activities followed the positive growth of the country these last 5 years. The commercial balance (exports against imports) was not spectacular (positive in US$ 30 billion in 2010). It is important to notice that the mineral commodities balance was US$ 35 billion, representing 27.4% of the total exports and 15.6% of the total imports of Brazil (DNPM, 2012). In this positive environment, the workforce in Brazil showed progress in number of formal jobs and average revenues.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) delivers water to the San Francisco Bay Area through an aqueduct system extending from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the East Bay. This aqueduct system, the Mokelumne Aqueducts, are comprised of three 82-mile long steel pipelines. The portion of the aqueducts crossing the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is recognized to be vulnerable to seismic and flooding hazards. Previous studies evaluated alternatives for mitigating these hazards and increasing the reliability of the aqueducts for the next 100 years. The preferred solution involves construction of a 16.5-mile tunnel across the Delta and re-routing the existing aqueducts through this tunnel
