Fatigue is a relatively well-investigated topic in the surface transportation industry with a research focus on sleep deprivation and disruption. This paper examines fatigue in mining operations. While mine operators are using or currently introducing technology to monitor fatigue, there is little work that focuses on the operators’ experience of fatigue and the acceptance of fatigue-monitoring technology. Focus groups were conducted to investigate these topics. The results of this research suggest that current fatigue-monitoring systems lack validity, reliability and user acceptance. Overall, these results emphasize the importance of a socio-technical systems perspective to guide interventions aiming at improving miner health and safety.

The MSHA prescribed method for the determination of quartz in airborne respirable dust samples from underground coal mines is the P-7 method, a combination of low temperature radio-frequency ashing (LTA) and infrared analysis (lR). There is no prescribed procedure for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rock. Dispersive Infrared (IR), Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods are most commonly used for quartz analysis in powders. Several aspects of the experimental procedures such as the analysis sample preparation from bulk samples, ashing techniques, scanning procedures, peak measurement location, calibration techniques, sample amounts, size consist, and data interpretation affect differently the results from each of the methods. Significant differences in analysis results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) on the same samples are reported. All these studies point to the need for reliable quartz analysis methods. In a recent research, a procedure for preparing bulk coal and host rock samples for quantitative quartz analysis was developed. Further the results from X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy for quartz content on identical samples were compared. Calibrations with pure and mixed standards were used to assess the influence of particle size distribution, matrix, and calibration on analysis results. In this paper, several issues with the measurement of quartz in the samples of coal, host rock, and airborne respirable dust from mines are outlined and quantified.

INTRODUCTION This presentation is concerned with the administrative and technical capability of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) to assure compliance with the individual exposure limit for radon daughters (currently 4 WLM per year). It is not concerned with the epidemiological bases for setting the exposure limit. Moreover, the intent is to show how sophisticated methodologies and advanced technologies, applied to radon daughter concentration measurements in uranium mines, convey the spirit of compliance by providing better estimates than do the historical methods. These better estimates mean that more accurate and more precise estimates of each worker's exposure are determined using these more modern methods and devices. The estimates so derived should provide more convincing evidence to an individual worker that his assigned exposure is a valid indicator of his true exposure. In addition, a perspective on the exposure estimate in relation to the exposure limit is given as further evidence that an exposure limit is not the dividing line between "safe" and "unsafe" exposures. A brief description is given of the compliance aspects of the Atomic Energy Control Regulations and of the limitations of purely statistical non-compliance procedures. Most of the emphasis of the paper will be placed on the uncertainties associated with conventional radon daughter exposure determination and the means being employed (and anticipated) to reduce these uncertainties. NON-COMPLIANCE Under current Atomic Energy Control Regulations (1978), the annual individual exposure limit for radon daughters is given without reference to the possible methods of sampling and calculation of radon daughter exposure and without any reference to possible uncertainties or their magnitudes. This is common in such statutes, the details of sampling, calculation, error analysis, and so on, being left for licence conditions or provided as a specific guideline to the licensee on the matter of compliance with the Regulation. Since the exposure limit is contained in the Regulations, compliance with it is absolute, as with any other law. In Canada, a state of non-compliance with the radon daughter exposure limit exists when an exposure (attributed to an employee) is reported by the licensee to exceed the limit. No uncertainty in the measurements or in the overall determination of exposure is reported nor is any requested. Removal of the worker and the loss of his services are the immediate and direct penalty suffered by the licensee for failure to maintain the exposure at, or below, the limit. A worker may be re-instated to employment for the balance of the reporting period only if the licensee can assure the AECB that further significant exposure to the worker will not ensue. In other jurisdictions, such as the United States, non-compliance is defined on a statistical basis. For example, NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health presents procedures for calculating the 95% Lower Confidence Limit (LCL) in order to "compare the results of occupational environmental sampling to an occupational health standard and make a decision with a known chance of making an incorrect decision that a state of non-compliance exists" (Leidel and Busch, 1975). (In the nomenclature of this presentation, exposure limit would be used in place of "standard", in the NIOSH sense). Furthermore, it is emphasized in the NIOSH document that such numerical comparisons "are necessary only if the sample mean is greater than the standard". The NIOSH document points out, quite correctly, that the "statistical procedures presented below will not detect and do not allow for analysis of highly inaccurate results, i.e., systematic (non-random) errors or mistakes ... If a systematic error is known to exist in an instrument or analytical procedure then correct the sample mean of the data before analyzing for non-compliance". It is certainly not the purpose of this paper to criticize the sophisticated statistical approach to non-compliance as given in the NIOSH document or in similar approaches used in other jurisdictions. Rather, the purpose is to approach, with some introspection, the question of the determination of exposure by the employer for his employee and especially the employee's understanding of, and confidence in, the accuracy of the exposure determination and its relation to the exposure limit. The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. The Falkirk Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corporation, is located 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Bismarck, North Dakota. Falkirk is under contract to provide 5.08 mil- lion tonnes (5.6 million short tons) annually to the Coal Creek Generating Station, an 1100 mega- watt electric plant owned by the Cooperative and United Power Associations of Minnesota. Coal Creek is located 2.4 kilometers (1 ½ miles) south of the Mine. Electricity from the plant is transmitted to rural electric customers in Minnesota via a 400-kilovolt D.C. power line.

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) recommends that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of spoil material on reclaimed surfaces should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate efficient tree root growth. However, the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose spoil material could cause instability. Successful application of the FRA on the flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine site are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor any type of slope movement. Quarterly surveying of the monuments were done to quantify slope movement, either horizontally or vertically. The methodology developed in this research for field slope movement monitoring was validated using computer model results. Analytical models based on the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and numerical models based on the finite element method (FEM) were developed for slope stability analysis. The LEM analysis was done using the Geo-Slope/W program following the simplified Bishop method. However, numerical models were developed using the PLAXIS computer program following the Mohr’s Coulomb failure criterion and strength reduction technique. The slope stability analysis was performed for two different scenarios: first with the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose graded spoil material and second without top loose graded spoil material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems, due to 1.22 m (4 ft) loose graded spoil that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes.

Commissioning a mineral processing plant has always been a challenging task. The process includes pre- operational verification, dry and wet commissioning, and a gradual ramp-up to full production, all of which must be executed within the shortest possible timeframe, requiring numerous highly interdependent tasks to be conducted concurrently. This phase is under scrutiny by shareholders, corporate management, and other stakeholders who are keen to see a return on investment as the operation starts yielding results. Despite extensive documentation in the literature highlighting its significance, the impact of the commissioning phase remains underestimated in contemporary mining projects. This paper provides an overview of the commissioning process and its associated challenges before focusing on a critical success factor: building a dedicated commissioning team with the required competencies and personality profiles. The roadmap to achieving an efficient plant start-up is outlined. Drawing on over 15 years of experience with more than 20 concentrator commissioning and start-ups, a general framework is presented to maximize success. This method emphasizes the crucial role of the operation and metallurgy team in supporting these projects. Finally, insights from Soutex’s involvement in multiple start-ups are shared, offering lessons learned that emphasize best practices and challenges encountered in expediting the ramp-up process while maintaining high Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards.

Pollution to Lake Erie will be significantly reduced by the Westerly Storage Tunnel (WST) system, which is mainly comprised of a 10,000-ft long tunnel and a dewatering pump station in the downstream tunnel shaft. Separate construction contracts for the tunnel and pump station required careful management of the interface risks. A key decision was to decouple the projects by relocating the mining shaft away from the pump station. The need to receive the tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the pump station shaft was eliminated by dismantling the 28-ft diameter TBM in the tunnel then carrying it back through the tunnel and up the mining shaft. This paper discusses how interface risks were successfully managed during design and construction to limit overall schedule impacts.

Overexcavation and ground loss events during pressurized-face TBMadvance in soft ground can result in unplanned deformations above the tunnel and damage to existing infrastructure. Successfully managing the risk of this occurring is crucial for any project in an urban area to proceed. Common risk management approaches include a combination of establishing suitable ranges of TBM operational parameters and using geotechnical instrumentation for deformation monitoring. Another risk management tool is material flow reconciliation, which varies depending on the specified mining method and the equipment choices by the contractor. This paper compares recent and ongoing projects in the Pacific Northwest regarding overexcavation risk management.

Heat and humidity buildup withn refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a lifesustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95 °F (35 °C). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in its underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-h period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners (SMs) increased over the 96-h test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating the interior heat and humidity temperature profiles for occupied RAs not tested in situ.

The changes in the elemental contents and the structural properties of chalcopyrite concentrate when roasted were studied, and the main reactions contributing to the leaching process revisited. Firstly, TG/DTA measurements were performed to identify the roasting temperatures that influenced the type of species reacting with sulphuric acid leaching liquor. The temperatures of main reactions, whose output may affect the subsequent leaching process, were analysed for the concentrate at hand, and concluded to be generally lower than those reported in literature. Secondly, the obtained results were confirmed by images and XRD measurements on the roasted concentrate at temperatures in between 350 and 600 °C with increments of 50 °C. Finally, the leaching behaviour of the roasted specimens in a stirred sulphuric acid solution examined and the Cu/ Fe selectivity investigated that the maximum Cu/Fe ratio in the pregnant solution would nearly be achieved for the roasting temperatures lower than 500 °C, since the oxidation temperature of iron sulphate is found lower than that of copper sulphate.

This study compares three different techniques — decision tree, artificial neural network (ANN) and multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) — for predicting blast-induced ground vibrations in some Indian tunneling projects. The models’ performance was also compared with site-specific conventional predictor equations. A database consisting of 137 vibration records was randomly divided into training and testing sets for model generation. The results indicate that the decision tree is best suited to predicting vibrations. Furthermore, the decision tree suggests that the intensity of near-field ground vibrations is mainly affected by the total charge fired in a round, whereas the intensity of far-field vibrations is governed by maximum charge per delay and charge per hole.

Over 2 million tons of steel furnace dusts are produced each year in the United States. Recycling of these dusts rather than disposal would conserve mineral resources, reduce land requirements for disposal, and decrease pollution. In addition to the iron content, the dusts contain appreciable amounts of zinc and lead. Removal of lead and zinc with simultaneous reduction of Iron oxide has been achieved by inert atmosphere roasting of carbon-containing pellets prepared from steel furnace wastes. High- and low-carbon wastes were blended to obtain mixtures with sufficient carbon to serve as a reductant during subsequent roasting. The mixtures were pelletized with the addition of bentonite and water, and the dried pellets were roasted in a stream of nitrogen at temperatures ranging from 900" to 1,150° C. Zinc and lead contents were reduced to the 0.1 percent level or less by roasting mixtures containing as little as 7 percent carbon for 1 hour at 1,100° C. ton metallization increases with available carbon content; 50 percent metallization is achieved with 7 percent carbon, 85 percent metallization with 12.5 percent carbon, and over 95 percent metallization when the pelletized mixtures contained in excess of 20 percent carbon.

The word adapt means "to change so that one's behavior will conform to new or changed circumstances." Applying this definition to process controllers suggests that an adaptive controller can change its behavior in response to changes in the dynamics and disturbances of the process. In the minerals industry there are many control cases where adaptive control will provide superior control as compared with more traditional PID (proportional, integral, derivative) control. A typical plant uses as many as 100 to 200 control loops for lprocess regulation. Therefore, the task of initially tuning and then periodically retuning these controllers is a formidable problem, During the time the controllers are "un-tuned", product quality may deteriorate and unstable operations may result. Adaptive controllers are capable of tuning themselves, thus avoiding this problem. The computers commonly used in distributed control systems are easily capable of implementing adaptive controllers. In addition to the possibility of using the control computer to implement adaptive controllers, many distributed control systems will offer adaptive control as a standard feature in the near future.

The selection of a slope angle for an open pit in rock has often been made without the benefit of a comprehensive engineering study. This is largely due to the fact that the hardware and procedures necessary for such a study have not been available. Recently this situation has been reversed. The application of borehole television and terrestrial photogrammetric devices has made possible the accurate determination of rock joint structure, on which stability calculations can be based. Another important aspect is the evolution of practical methods of conducting in-situ rock joint strength tests.

There is an ever-increasing need for quality construction materials to provide the necessary housing and transportation facilities required for the protection and movement of people and goods. By the year 2000, requirements for housing in the United States will have doubled due to population growth. Requirements for transportation facilities in this same period will also have increased substantially. Further, all existing facilities for both housing and transportation will require substantial maintenance of one form or another. Aggregate is the basic material of the construction industry. There is some occurrence of aggregate source material in virtually every state of the United States, and in every country in the world. United States reserves of commercially useable aggregate have never been systematically estimated and are probably so vast as to be incalculable.1 However, in many areas its existence is largely negated by inaccessibility. Often it is lodged deeply or intricately in the earth or it is too distant from markets to offer a desirable "return on investment" under the present economic structure. Other factors that prevent its utility are the occurrence of small scattered deposits that individually are too small to justify the necessary capital investment for exploitation and collectively are too widely disseminated; also, the aggregate nay be deficient in certain desired chemical or physical qualitites.1

Nearly three decades of intense research, corresponding with a period of unparalleled discovery and the advent of scientific advances and hypotheses of ore formation, has resulted in a great body process-focused research concerning how ore deposits form. The development of process models and their application has proceeded more or less in step. Discoveries have been made in mineralized regions such as provinces and districts but generally without a comparably developed understanding of why provinces and ore bodies exist and, except in general terms, where ore deposits are within districts and regions. The process of discovery is still referred to as search and exploration budgets are heavily weighted toward exploration drilling.

This general production structure is found repeatedly among markets for metals and other industrial minerals, and research results from the sulfur market potentially carry over to other markets with similar structures. "The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."

As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights.
