There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX, indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential to be higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and alack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for the low PGM recoveries experienced. This paper briefly reviews the adequacy of existing management theories and practices and the managerial proficiency or competency in the South African mining industry. The investigation revealed that existing management practices are totally inadequate to enable all employees on all the levels of the mining industry to achieve the results required from them, in all aspects, at all times. As a result, the South African mining industry is gradually losing its long standing reputation as a relative cheap, competitive, and reliable supplier of minerals to the local and global markets. According to some prominent management authors and theorists, an all-inclusive unified management theory does not exist at present. In this paper the authors summarize the main aspects of a newly developed comprehensive, practical, and integrated management method. It is believed that the application of this method would significantly improve the future performance and competitiveness of the South African mining industry

Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

Failed attempts at amalgamation of a gold/osmiridium concentrate, recovered behind pebble mill liners during re-lining, led to the discovery that the gold particles were coated and that nitric acid only could remove the coatings. Following this treatment amalgamation was rapid and resulted in a complete recovery of the gold that otherwise would have been lost in plant residues. Investigations into the nature and formation of the coatings led to the realization that the coatings were impregnations of harder elements, associated with the gold during grinding and driven into the softer gold surface by high pressure, impact and attrition. It was further realized that this phenomenon could be part of gold ore milling, world-wide. With these thoughts in mind the question is asked whether concentration down to micron sizes prior to cyanidation, should not play a greater role in gold recovery.

The relationship between neural network (NN) performance and the parameters that form the architecture of the neural network is complicated. This paper studies an issue that is still controversial—the effect of the number of neurons and number of hidden layers on NN performance. This paper tests if the above parameters affect network performance when the NN is trained according to the quick stop strategy. It was determined that the number of neurons did not have any effect on the NN performance for a single layer or a double layer network. It was also found that the training error and calibration error could be poor indicators of the prediction correlation coefficient.

Mining companies are increasingly looking to the developing world for the next generation of mining projects, often in countries that have little or no previous history of large-scale mining. One of the major challenges for such projects is hiring?and retaining?personnel that have technical skills and experience in mining-related disciplines. Staffing a mine with an expatriate workforce is neither cost-effective nor sustainable, and many countries now insist that mining companies ?transform? the profile of their workforce to more closely mirror the demographic profile of the host population. The need to nurture mining-related skills in emerging mining nations is not solely limited to the workforce: there are also pressing economic and sustainability imperatives to develop capacity within local service providers such as consultants and contractors, as well as to facilitate informed engagement between mining companies, government and civil society. However, few educational institutions in emerging mining nations currently have the ability to offer practical training in mining-related disciplines. Local employees who are sponsored by companies to develop their skills through international study maybe impeded by language and cultural barriers, and may also be taught using course content that is of limited relevance to the specific challenges of their future working environment. This paper addresses the challenge of skills development and retention in emerging mining nations and uses examples from sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific region to explore practical means of developing capacity in mining-related disciplines. It examines the need for companies to implement strategies to develop local technical capacity in countries where they envisage a long-term operational future and also highlights the need to foster partnerships between academia, developmental institutions, mining companies, governments and civil society to establish the critical mass of mining-related skills required to nurture the development of a sustainable mining industry.

"SynopsisThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. While southern Africa’s abundance of minerals resources is still unrivalled, it has lost considerable dominance in terms of production output. The sustainability of southern Africa’s mining industry is increasingly becoming dependent on its ability to manage the performance of its operations well. A valuable tool for monitoring and managing performance is the use of key performance areas (KPAs) – which are those areas of performance that are reflected explicitly or implicitly in the vision and strategies of an organization and reflect the critical success factors of the organization. This paper is a review of key performance areas in the southern African mining delivery environment. The KPAs discussed in this paper have been identified by comparing KPAs of the several mining houses engaged in surface mining operations in southern Africa and then extracting those KPAs that are common to most of them. Although the authors support the view that each organization should develop KPAs to specifically fit its needs, the study reveals that five KPAs – safety and health, costs, product quality, fleet management, and delivery should form a default list that covers the key areas that any organization should consider when choosing KPAs. KPIs are those subsets of KPAs that we measure in order to manage KPAs.IntroductionThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. It has previously been observed that industrial high-titania slags display a compositional invariance, remaining close to stoichio-metric M3O5. The present study focuses on this invariance and the phenomena which may cause it. The invariance was studied using thermochemical calculations and a mechanism is proposed for the observed behaviour. The mechanism suggests that a combination of thermochemical equilibrium and transient slag solidification and melting results in the observed compositional invariance. The proposed mechanism provides new insights and prompts questions about other mechanisms in the smelting process.

In this study, effects of the inert constituents, such as ash, and the effect of blending coals with differing rank and composition on the plasticity of coal blends were investigated. The reference coal originated from the Zonguldak region, in the north-west part of Turkey. Firstly, the effect of coal ash on the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was determined. Secondly, the relationship between the plastic properties of the individual coals and those of the blended coals were identified. Some important relations were found, related to the characteristics of the individual coals. Ultimately, the manner in which the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was affected by blending with low volatile coals was investigated. Keywords: coal blending, coal plasticity, coke, fluidity, rank.

The structural age of the capital mining machinery, representing a part of the system of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia, has been dictated by the initiation and development of open pit coal mines. For example, the oldest bucket wheel excavators were installed some thirty-four years ago, and the average life of the relevant machinery exceeds twenty-two years. Operation of both capital equipment and machinery has direct effects on economic and business activities of open pit mines, and consequently forced us to make a decision and study thoroughly the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of capital mining equipment at the open pit coal mines of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to define and discuss the relative problems as well as to find out the possible solutions and establish the methodology for estimating the optimum exploitation life of machinery. The study was successfully carried out by a team of scientists engaged from and coordinated by the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper presents the key observations covering the subject problem. Extensive field studies have been carried out to investigate the pillar fire problems in one coal mine in India. A Thermal IR gun and a Thermovision camera have been employed for thermal scanning to assess the state of heating in selected pillars. Special sampling set-ups have been designed to collect gas samples from the holes drilled into the selected pillars and the multigas detector is used to analyse the composition of samples in situ. In order to predict the spontaneous heating in coal pillars, different gas ratios have been calculated and it has been observed that some of the established gas ratios, viz. Graham?s ratio, Young?s ratio etc. have resulted in negative values in samples containing high amounts of methane. The modified gas ratios have been proposed which will be useful for predicting the pillar fires. These ratios may also be used for assessing the condition of fires in sealed-off areas.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree This paper addresses the critical parameters that need to be considered when designing a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a narrow tabular steep dipping orebody. These parameters are : ?Reef dip ?Reef width ?Geological structures within the orebody ?Physical dimensions of the selection of machines ?Gradeability of the selection of machines. The main objective in designing such a layout is to maximize machine efficiencies whilst minimizing dilution. This methodology was then applied in the design of a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a given piece of ground (Vlakpoort and Moddergat) using a given selection of machines. This piece of ground contains the PGM bearing UG2 Reef with an average thickness of 124 cm and dipping at 18°withadverse strike and dip changes. Two bord-and-pillar layouts were designed for this area. Layout 1 is characterized by the use of strike conveyors to convey ore on strike with an average LHD hauling distance of 35 m. Layout2 uses LHDs for all on strike conveyance of ore with an average hauling distance of 75 m. These two layouts were then technically and financially compared. It was concluded that layout 1 is theoretically superior but layout 2 was chosen due to its greater flexibility and probability of operational success. Layout 2 was also compared to conventional mining and it was concluded to be more economically feasible. However the latter is a proven mining method in these conditions and has a lower risk operational failure. Bord-and-pillar mining has some favourable promises such as improving labour difficulties, lowering operating costs and providing safer working conditions. The success of mechanized bord-and-pillar mining in narrow tabular steep dipping orebodies will depend on the extent of the research and development efforts which need to create and innovate technologies to overcome some of the current limitations stated in the above-mentioned parameters.

Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.

Risk lies at the heart of all mining and nowhere more so than in pit slope design. Mining is principally about two areas of risk; safety and economics. This paper addresses the main elements of pit slope design and presents a view of the state of the art in terms of safety, design, prediction of performance, success and pit slope management. There has been a recent trend for serious injury and fatalities due to stability in open pit mines. The causes and contributing factors are analysed in relation to geotechnical knowledge, pit slope design and management. Currently there is no standard classification system for mine slope designs and it is considered doubtful if a universal system is possible. Designs are usually formulated in accordance with many different methodologies, various engineering principals and a number of different philosophical approaches, with results often presented in terms of Factors of Safety or Probabilities of Failure. However wide experience has demonstrated that even with apparently detailed engineering investigation and analysis at Feasibility Level, at the Operating Stage mine slope angles are regularly subject to large changes. The general experience is that these changes are ± 5° and 16° overall, which is considerably outside the accepted order of accuracy. For large deep mines these are huge changes and represent significant risks to the operations. The current state of practice in pit slope design is examined for two stages, feasibility and operating.

Qualitative analysis of three mineral samples from northern Mozambique was accomplished by X-ray diffraction (XRD), microscopy, scintillation, and magnetic determination. Chemical characterization was accomplished using ICP-OES and pressed powder XRF after dissolution using microwave-assisted digestion and flux fusion. The samples consisted of a mixture of minerals with tantalite as the major component, with minor amounts of microlite, quartz, mica, accessory garnet, and tourmaline. Incomplete dissolution was obtained using microwave digestion, with maximum recoveries of 90.25 ± 0.06% and 88.90 ± 0.04% for Nb2O5 and Ta2O5 respectively. Complete dissolution using Li2B4O7 resulted in recoveries of 98.5 ±0.2% Nb2O5 and 100.4 ± 0.3% Ta2O5.

In the United States, chromium has been consumed in three major markets: chemical, metallurgical, and refractory. The predominant end use for chromium in the United States is in the metallurgical market as an alloying element in the production of stainless steel. In addition to being a major stainless steel-producing country, the United States is a major world producer of chromium-containing chemicals and has used substantial amounts of chromite ore for refractory applications. Chromium use is not easily further subdivided within the chemical and refractory industries because there is insufficient publicly available information to do so; however, chromium use can be subdivided among metallurgical industry uses based on the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported shipments of stainless steel by market classification (agricultural, aircraft, automotive, etc.). It is the goal of this study to determine the distribution of U.S. chromium apparent consumption among major markets in the United States. The distribution is expressed in the form of dimensionless fractions that are computed based on documented chromium consumption by major market. The distribution of chromium among markets within the metallurgical market is computed in a similar manner. Distribution factors are first computed for the major markets, then for markets that are subdivisions of the metallurgical market. The distribution of chromium among major markets has changed substantially over the time period of analysis. The fraction of chromium consumed by the metallurgical market has increased while that of the chemical and refractory markets has declined. Within the metallurgical market, the service industry market accounts for the greatest fraction of chromium consumption followed by transportation. Electrical, machinery, and fabricated products markets account for a substantial share of the metallurgical chromium consumption.

The purpose of the project was to investigate the challenges faced by Khutala Colliery pertaining to underground road construction and maintenance. Furthermore the influence of these challenges on productivity and safety requirements were taken into consideration. The operating standards required for the construction and maintenance of the 2 seam road transport infrastructure was investigated, together with reasons why the standards of operating procedure are not met. The Code of Practice put in place by Khutala Colliery was used to view the standard operating procedures. Leading practices on underground road construction were researched. The project aims to discover the gaps that Khutala Colliery must bridge to implement enhanced practices with regards to underground road construction. During the period of study, observations were carried out to determine whether the road construction standards of operating procedure were being adhered to at all times for both road construction and road maintenance. Khutala Colliery has put in place a traffic management plan, which includes safety practices and work policies that must be adhered to while travelling on underground transport roads.

Mr Colin M. Spence took office as President of The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers on 1st July, 1984. Colin Maynard Spence was born in November 1921, and was educated at the Durban Preparatory and High Schools, in both of which he was a Dux Scholar. He graduated from the University of Natal in 1942 with a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering. In 1958 he received a Diploma in Town Planning from the same university. Cessation of Membership In accordance with Clauses 7.6.1 and 12.1 of the Institute's Constitution, Rules and Policy, the following members have been struck off the Membership list.
