The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted experiments to determine if training using a latent-image, three-dimensional (3-D) slide simulation exercise improved miners' ability to recognize roof and rib hazards. The effectiveness of this innovative type of classroom training was investigated by measuring workers' performance on a hazard recognition task. The study was unique in that hazard recognition skills were assessed in the workplace using actual coal mine roof and rib hazards. Results showed that training with a latent-image, 3-D slide simulation exercise significantly improved each subject's performance on the in-mine hazard recognition task. Further, the USBM researchers concluded that transfer of learning from the classroom to the workplace occurred.

Most early research on solvent extraction of coal has been concerned with the molecular structure of coal. Although rush work is continuing, practical aspects of the subject also are being emphasized. For example, development of the Pott-Broche extraction process resulted from the discovery of very efficient solvents for the pressure-extraction of coal. Recently, Orchin and Storch reported the use of even more efficient solvents under similar conditions. In addition to the discovery of more effective solvents, the possibility of efficient extraction at atmospheric pressure is obviously of practical interest. H. J. Rose observed that phenanthrene at its atmospheric boiling point readily dispersed 80 percent or more of Pittsburgh-bed bituminous coal. This fact served as the starting point of the present investigation, ill which determination of the chemical specificity of this solvent and the chemical nature of the resulting extracts was undertaken. This paper represents a progress report of the results obtained to date.

Tables of chemical thermodynamic properties for the ideal gas state from 0° to 1,000° K are reported for eight alkanethiols, three cycloalkanethiols and arylthiols, six thiaalkanes, two dithiaalkanes, three thiacycloalkanes, and three thiophenes. They are based on current physical and thermochemical constants and definitions, reliable vibrational assignments, and the latest insights into molecular structure and energetics.

[The quantity of explosives sold in the United States in January, 1931, for domestic consumption, amounted to 368,100 kegs (9,202,510 pounds) of black blasting powder, 4,810;000 pounds of permissible explosives, and 16,533,000 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. These figures are based on reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from nearly all manufacturing companies, and include an estimate of sues by several companies that do not furnish monthly reports. Reports actually received from manufacturers shored sales of 365,977 kegs of black blasting powder (consisting of 220,892 kegs of granular powder and 145,085 kegs of pellet powder), 4,687,900 pounds of permissible explosives, and 15,498,152 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January, 1931, were smaller than in January last year, the decreases being 14 per cent for black blasting powder, 19 per cent for permissible, and 17 per cent for high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January 1931 when compared with soles in December 1930, show increases for all three classes of explosives as follows: 2 per cent for block blasting powder, 16 per cent for permissible explosives, and 7 per cent for other high explosives. PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES: Of the 4,687,900 hounds of permissible reported sold during January, 97 per cent was used for coal-mining operations, Including 32 per cent for anthracite mines and 65 per cent for bituminous mines. The following Staten were the largest users of permissible explosives daring January: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, and Utah. Their combined sales represented 89 per cent of the entire sales reported for this class of explosives.]

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. (1) The Castleman Basin was investigated by diamond drilling, engineering examination, and geologic study. Agreements permitting investigation of about 14,700 acres of land were entered into with 79 landowners. Eleven beds of coal between the horizons of the Harlem and Mercer beds were penetrated in drilling. These beds from top downward are: Harlem, Upper Bakerstown, Lower Bakerstown, Brush Creek, Upper Freeport Rider, Upper Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, Mount Savage, and Mercer. The major industrial uses of char or semicoke produced by low-temperature carbonization of coal4/ are as fuel for generating electric power, for blending with metallurgical coking coal as a substitute for low-volatile coals, and for gasification to produce synthesis gas for chemical purposes. This paper discusses various methods for carbonizing coal, emphasizing processing of the noncoking coals to produce char for thermal power-plant fuel and for blending with metallurgical coking coals and tar for chemical use. Low-temperature carbonization is a relatively simple processing step involving heating coal to about 900° to 1,200° F. to decompose the coal into 4 main products: (1) Semicoke or char; (2) complex, partly oxygenated liquid hydrocarbons or tar; (3) fixed gases; and (4) water. If the coal is heated rapidly under conditions that prevent decomposition of the primary products, 68 to 87 percent of the net heat in the raw coal is left in the char and 10 to 23 percent of the potential heat appears in the primary tar. Fixed gases represent approximately 7 percent of the heat and approximately 2 percent is lost or dissipated in the reactions of decomposition. Considering the different ranks of coal in the United States, the yield of tar will vary from about 9 to 44 gallons per ton, therefore it is important that each coal be carefully considered if it is to be carbonized for industrial use.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines to disseminate technical information retarding the methods used in mining nonmetallic minerals. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. This paper deals particularly with methods and costs of dredging, classifying materials, and transportation at the plant of the Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co. of Portland, Ore. The use of safe equipment, safeguards, and safe practices in the mining and allied industries should reduce injuries and improve accident experience. The object of this report is to give to the mining industry, especially metal mining, a graphic pictorial description of some of the safeguards, equipment, and practices used and followed in the iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district. Some of the subject material has been in use or has been established for many years, and some is relatively new. Some of the equipment was purchased commercially, and some was designed by the company employees and constructed in the mine shops. The photographs were taken by the personnel of the Health and Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, primarily for use in the Metal-Mine Accident-Prevention Course of the Bureau of Mines. In general, they are arranged under the following headings or subjects: 1. Accident statistics. 2. Support of ground. 3. Hoisting and haulage. 4. Explosives. 5. Fires, gases, and ventilation.

An inexpensive technique that laboratory studies indicated would significantly reduce seepage in irrigation canals was devised and tested through research sponsored by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Missouri River Basin Field Committee. Laboratory tests simulating optimum field conditions determined that easily applied sodium carbonate solutions made test beds of canal lining materials virtually impermeable for long periods. The study comprised alternative laboratory treatments of 3-inch-deep test beds of canal earths with 74 water-soluble chemicals in search of one 01' more that would effectively improve the water barrier characteristics of the component clays. Sodium carbonate, one of the least expensive, was among the most effective. The addition of 0,4 lb of reagent per sq yd greatly reduced the seepage from typical, highly permeable test beds. The reagent penetrated and sealed surface for about a 1.5-inch depth.

The Bureau of Mines made drillability studies with impregnated diamond bits in the laboratory on 7 rock types and in the field on 21 different rock types. Results indicate that drill parameters of rotational speed, thrust, and torque must produce sufficient applied forces to induce stress levels that cause continuous failure in rock to achieve efficient penetration rates. Higher rotational speeds appear to be more effective in drilling relatively harder rocks, although the increased speed causes more bit wear; increases in thrust result in higher drilling rates but not linearly; and up to a critical value a linear relation exists between torque and penetration rate for a specific rock type. Penetration rates with impregnated bits show a trend similar to that obtained with surface-set bits for rock under 25,000 psi compressive strength.

"IntroductionThis paper on the kata thermometer is issued by the Bureau of Mines on account of the general interest in this instrument and the fact that it is frequently used in studies of mine ventilation conditions with regard to comfort and health of miners. It has been used in the studies being conducted along this line by the Bureau of Mines on the effects of high temperatures and humidities of air in mine working on the comfort conditions, as well as in studies of atmospheric conditions in mine, railway and vehicular tunnels.The study of the various physiological responses of the human body to different degrees of temperature combined with different percentages of relative humility in still and in moving air, now being conducted at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in the research laboratory of the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, cooperating with the Bureau of and the U. S. Public Health Service, presents an added opportunity of investigating the instruments that have been devised to measure atmospheric conditions as they affect the comfort and health of human beings.The ordinary mercury thermometer, as pointed out by Heberden3 almost hundred years ago is a very inadequate instrument for measuring the physiological effects of atmospheric conditions. It merely accounts for that part of the body heat lost by raliation and convection, while as a matter of fact greater part of the body heat resulting from the metabolic process within the body is eliminated by means of evaporation from the surface of the body."

"IntroductionThe theory of particle dispersion and deposition in turbulent flow is important to many fields of science and engineering. Dispersion has been studied in some detail since the early fifties (Taylor, 1954; Fischer, 1967; Osipov and Grekov, 1968; Skobunov, 1970 and 1973; Klebanov and Martynyuk, 1974). A broad research effort has also been underway in studying the mechanics of dry particle deposition. Friedlander and Johnstone (1957) proposed a theory, according to which particle deposition from vertical pipe flow could be described by an eddy diffusion transport followed by a final flight to the surface. There have been numerous revisions and additions to this original theory (Owen, 1960; Liu and Agarwal, 1974; Liu and llori, 1974; El-Shobokshy and Ismael, 1980) The mining process essentially consists of breaking in situ materials and transporting them out of the mine. An inherent characteristic of this process is the generation of fine particles. Fine airborne particulates are associated with a number of threats to the health of the miners; fine coal dust can also result in mine-wide catastrophic incidents such as dust explosions. For these and other reasons, it is important to understand the behaviour of airborne dust particulates, particularly their generation, entrainment, transport, dispersion, and deposition in the mine environment for their control.Mine related studies on dispersion and deposition have been few. Yet, several studies of gas and dust dispersion, diesel exhaust contamination, and methane ingress into mine workings have recognized the need for developing reliable parameter values for fundamental understanding of the phenomena (Da""Yes and Slack, 1954; Hodkinson, 1957; Hodkinson and leach, 1958; Mass and Wildschut, 1966; Airey, 1969; Courtney et al., 1986; Stefanko, Ramani, and Thakur, 1974; Stefanko, Ramani and Kenzy, 1977; Bhaskar, 1987, Bhaskar and Ramani 1990; Qin and Ramani, 1989; Shankar and Ramani, 1990)."

Gasoline and other liquid fuels may be obtained from coal by direct and indirect hydrogenation.3/ The direct process, usually termed the coal-hydro-genation or the Bergius process, was patented in Germany by F. Bergius in 1914 and developed to a commercial stage by the inventor and I. G. Farben-industrie. From a chemical point of view, the coal-hydrogenation process consists of adding hydrogen to the complex coal molecules and removing oxygen so that its chemical constitution is changed to that of petroleum, whereupon the coal substance liquefies, yielding an aromatic crude oil. In the indirect-hydrogenation process, known as the Fischer-Tropsch process (invented by Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch in Germany), coal, lignite, or natural gas is first converted to water gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. This mixture of gases, in proper proportion and after suitable purification, is then passed over a solid catalyst at relatively low pressures (1 to 20 atmospheres) and temperatures ranging from 180° to 260° C. The products obtained are gasoline, Diesel oil, liquefiable gases, and paraffin wax.

A laboratory method for examining crude shale oil is described. The method uses only about 500 ml. of sample and a limited number of analytical determinations. Results provide information on the general characteristics and composition of an oil and serve as a basis for comparing different oils. However, the method does not provide for direct estimates of yields of commercial products. Analyses of 10 oils produced in the United States by different methods of retorting and of 10 shale oils from commercial-scale operations in 6 foreign countries are given. The shale-oil-analysis method presented in this paper is based on and employs the same equipment as the Bureau of Mines routine method for analyzing crude petroleum. As shale oil contains groups of compounds not generally found in petroleum, several modifications of the petroleum method that might increase its suitability for application to shale oil were investigated. The modifications included in the present method take into account the apparent poor heat stability of shale oil and the presence of large quantities of olefins and nitrogen compounds.

The coal wants at the Westland Mine in southwestern Pennsylvania consist chiefly of elongated, sandstone-filled channels with slickensided basal contacts. Tentatively identified as washouts, these channels are about 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide, are erratic in occurrence and trend, and are difficult to delineate from the customary core drilling pattern. Roof conditions are hazardous adjacent to the washout contact, but roof stability is generally unaffected greater than 30 feet away.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was made to determine the possibilities of using Florida beach-sand concentrator wastes in ceramic products. Sands used in the investigation originated in the Trail Ridge area of Florida, where continued operation of processing plants for recovering titanium minerals promises a dependable source of raw materials. Three general classes of ceramic products were studied, namely: (1) Structural, (2) refractory, and (3) electric-furnace slags.

The Bureau of Mines, with the cooperation of the Natural Gas Association of America, has conducted a study of leakage losses from natural-gas transmission lines. This study has shorn that surveys to determine the leakage from transmission lines lead to line repair work that not only aids in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show financial returns of large magnitude.2 In order to conduct the study, it was necessary to develop accurate and reliable methods of determining the actual leakage from pipe lines. METHODS OF TESTING Three methods that were developed and used to determine the leakage losses from high-pressure natural-gas transmission lines are: (1) The "pressure-drop" method, (2) The "metering-in and metering-out" method. (3) The "metering-in" method.
