"Several experiments have been carried out in efforts to evaluate qualitatively a variety of electrolytes for refining bismuth. Most extensive work was done with the basic tartrate, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluosilicic acid electrolytes. Deposits that are smooth and adherent can be obtained from these three electrolytes if low cathode current densities are employed. All three electrolytes were effective in purifying crude bismuth considerably, with additional purification indicated in each instance by a reelectrolysis step.With the basic tartrate electrolyte best results were obtained when the electrolyte was at 40° C. and contained at least 100 grams of bismuth per liter. An apparent disadvantage was depletion of bismuth from this electrolyte, causing the deposits to become spongy and nonadherent.The hydrochloric acid electrolyte had the greatest tendency to yield rough, dendritic deposits. Best deposits were obtained at cathode-current densities below 2 amperes per square decimeter. A small amount of glycerin helped to produce a smoother deposit, and adding sulfuric acid or methyl sulfuric acid retarded the deposition of impurities. Very good results were obtained in electrowinning bismuth from a bismuth trichloride-hydrochloric acid electrolyte.Smooth and adherent deposits were obtained from a hydrofluosilicic acid electrolyte, with very good refining as regards lead and silver impurities; however, higher reagent costs and slow decomposition of the electrolyte have discouraged its use.INTRODUCTIONMethods of recovering bismuth from ores and byproducts were underdeveloped for many years because of the limited uses for bismuth, the pharmaceutical industry being the chief consumer. In the past decade or so additional uses for bismuth, particularly in the metallurgical field, have brought about increased demand for the metal with the result that bismuth is being recovered from byproducts that were once discarded. In addition to such uses as low-melting alloys, solders, bearings, die setting, etc., some interest has been indicated in bismuth as a possible coolant for nuclear reactors. The advent of ductile bismuth and bismuth-alloy thermocouple wire has contributed greatly to temperature measurement, particularly in the below-zero range."

Outside air for ventilating coal mines in Alabama varies considerably in both temperature and moisture content during the year. Alternate condensation and evaporation of the moisture on mine roofs may result in stresses detrimental to the strength of mine roof. It is well known that the clays in shales absorb moisture, and many investigations have noted the weakening of shales by absorption of moisture. Parker (1970) concluded that there is an annual cycle of rock deterioration in mine roof rock caused by the annual temperature-humidity cycle at the surface. He further noted that moisture reduces the strength of dry rock by one-half, that moisture added to dry rock can cause failure in compression, and that drying of wet rock causes tensile stress buildups by shrinkage. His recommendations for alleviating the moisture-temperature problem was to seal the rock in critical areas and to control ventilation so that air temperature will be lower than rock temperature. The latter recommendation will avoid condensation on the rock surfaces. Hartmann and Greenwald (1941) published the results of a very comprehensive experimental project to determine the effect of temperature and humidity changes on the behavior of mine roof. Their general conclusions included statements that roof rocks were very sensitive to moisture changes, but had low coefficients of thermal expansion. "The Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, is investigating the preparation of pulverized coal for fuel. In this study the relative amount of surface in various products and samples had to be assessed. Because of the familiarity with screens and because of the simplicity of using the inverse ratio of the opening for ascertaining the amount of relative surface in the respective sizes, screens down to and including 270-mesh were used. This choice was made in full cognizance of the irregularity of screens, but it seemed that if the same screens were used throughout all the tests the relative values would be satisfactory.In dealing with the subsieve sizes, pneumatic elutriation was used to make several fractions to extend the sizing analysis into the range of hypothetical screens. This kind of a sizing analysis was thought necessary because it is familiar to all operators, and, furthermore, it is amenable to several ways of plotting curves that bring out the characteristics of various coals and various methods of grinding.The method of obtaining the data from which to set up the hypothetical screen scale is the subject of this paper. It consists in determining the average projected area of the particles in the respective elutriated products. By extending the ""area method"" to sieve sizes, a factor is found that may be applied to the subsieve sizes, and thus the scale is projected in a regular manner. This method avoids contentions about specific surface and steers clear of ""average diameter"" except as material sized on screens may be said to have an average diameter."

Several federal and state agencies have promulgated regulations that require the installation of operator protective structures on mobile equipment used in mining, construction, agriculture and logging industries. These regulations cover many different types of vehicles, from small farm tractors to large rubber-tired front-end loaders, and require structures that help protect the operator from death or injury from vehicle overturns, from falling tree tops and logs, from falling rocks, and from tree limbs in clearing operations. Two general types of vehicle operator protective structures have evolved over the past twenty years. The first of these is the "Roll-Over Protective Structure" or "ROPS" that is essentially a "roll bar" or "roll cage" that provides a relatively safe area for the vehicle operator if the vehicle should tip over and roll. The second protective structure is the "Falling Object Protective Structure" or "FOPS" that provides overhead protection against falling material. The terms "ROPS" and "FOPS" are often used interchangeably (sometimes inaccurately) with "cabs", "canopies", "roll bars', "protective structures" and other such descriptive names. In this report, 'ROPS" describes the function of the structure; 'FOPS" also describes a particular function. Thus a ROPS/FOPS could describe a cab or a canopy that provides both roll-over protection and falling object protection.

Briefly, this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross-sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index. Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization, it gave indications of having value in measuring free-swelling and coking properties of coals when burned on fuel tests. An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineering company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal. Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling excessively and clogging the grate. Samples were obtained, and it was found that the troublesome coals gave radically higher free-swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily. Also, it was found that the free-swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the standard volatile-matter test or iron agglutination-value results. The results of the free-swelling test were confirmed by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling, Coal, a special group of the Subcommittee, under the chairmanship of R.A. Shuman, worked along with the test method. Estberg, Limacher, and Shuman of the Battelle Memorial Institute investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential-type stokers from the swelling characteristics of the coal. Data were presented that also showed that the index was helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers.

Thermoelectric and metal alloying applications have changed the status of tellurium from oversupply to under supply . In a search for new sources of this element in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , Utah , and neighboring states , the Bureau of Mines analyzed more than 200 samples and obtained the results of tellurium determinations by private companies on more than 500 samples from a wide variety of mineral - bearing deposits . The About 40 minerals containing tellurium have been reported , mainly tellu- rides of gold , silver , bismuth , mercury , lead , copper , iron , and nickel . minerals usually occur in small quantities and identification in ores is extremely difficult . Samples containing more than 0.1 percent tellurium were taken from the Hilltop and Memphis properties in Dona Ana County , N. Mex . , and the Silver King property in White Pine County , Nev . , where development was chiefly for base metals . The Lone Pine mine in Catron County , N. Mex . , and the Bambolla mine near Moctezuma , Sonora , Mexico are potential sources of native tellurium occurring in small but high- grade pods . Much of the production of tellurium has come as a byproduct of electro- lytic refining of copper and lead- zinc ores in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , and Utah . Base -metal ore deposits will continue to be the most important pri- mary source of tellurium , although the concentration in ores is nearly always less than 10 parts per million . Any significant increase in output of tellu- rium probably will be related to production and improved efficiency in smelt- ing and refining base - metal ores .

Three filter cloth fabrics commonly used in drains for coal waste embankments were tested by the Bureau of Mines for clogging behavior and deterioration under simulated field conditions. The objective was to provide guidelines for the mining industry for the proper selection and use of filter cloths to assure safer embankments at mine waste disposal sites. The filter cloths were tested with three coal waste samples in stand-pipes used to simulate coal mine waste disposal environments. Two of the cloths showed a tendency to become clogged with fines from the wastes. One waste caused clogging by precipitating an iron-silicon compound on the test cloths. No apparent cloth deterioration resulted from exposures to the simulated coal waste environments. (The exposures ranged from 2 to 12 months.) In other tests, exposures to waters in the pH range of 2 to 12 and to reagents used in coal-preparation plants resulted in insignificant or no deterioration, as measured by tensile strength. However, long exposures to sunlight (ranging from 4.6 to 6 months) caused major deterioration in two of the cloths (86-and 98-pct losses in tensile strength) and slight deterioration in the third cloth (9-pct loss in strength).

A survey of previous underground mine fires revealed a number of reported fires may have been caused by malfunctioning stationary electrical equipment. Therefore, an evaluation of conventional fire protection systems was conducted to determine their usefulness in the protection of this equipment. To simplify the problem and facilitate the handling of data, the under-ground mine was divided into nine work areas. Representative combustibles and associated hazards characteristic of each area were identified. Conventionally available fire protection systems were then examined and evaluated to determine engineering and cost feasibility, effectiveness and reliability for the development of fire protection guidelines which could be used within the nine areas of interest.

The purpose of this report is to describe the design features and techniques used in operating a plant capable of producing about 1,500 pounds of titanium metal per day. The process used was based on the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium, a modification of what is generally known and spoken of as the Kroll process. Sponge metal crushed to melter's specifications was the end product of the operation as conducted. The report is divided into sections covering general plant layout and the major unit operations. These, in turn, are each divided into discussions of the equipment, operating procedures, and typical results. Descriptions are given in more detail than is generally expected of a technical report. During 1953 and 1954 over 130 engineers and businessmen, officially representing some 80 industrial, chemical, end engineering firms, visited the operating plant, and their questions, which indicated a serious interest in details, have served as a guide for the material contained in this report.

The report gives a review of the methods of predicting mine subsidence; these methods are used particularly in European coalfields. The methods are subdivided into two groups, based on mathematical expressions either for the trough profile or for the influence of infinitesimal extraction elements. The fundamental relationships common to all methods described herein are the principles of superposition and of equivalent extraction areas. The involved parameters are derived from field observations. For calculating horizontal displacements, their relation to the slope of the subsidence profile is applied. The time-dependent development of the subsidence process is characterized by the empirical "time factor." Modifications for the case of inclined strata are considered. A brief review of experimental and theoretical model investigations is given.

As part of the Phase I study activity, a questionnaire was sent to a representative sampling of mining companies to obtain information on the uses, use conditions, personnel policies and other user concerns associated with front-end loaders. On-site visits to several of the mining companies were also parried out and the questionnaire was used during these visits as well. Five major areas were dealt with in the user questionnaire. These included: 1) Front-End Loader Critique - An open-ended form was employed to permit the mining companies to describe the particular things they liked and disliked about front-end loaders, in general, and/ or specific models in particular. 2) Usage - A form indicating the functions performed by front-end loaders and the numbers, makes and models of front-end loaders being used by mining companies. 3) Environment - A form where the user indicated the various types of conditions encountered in their use of front-end loaders. 4) Personnel - A form for describing factors pertaining to the qualifications of front-end loader operators. 5) Miscellaneous and Comments - A form permitting the user to comment on his feelings toward standardization of front-end loader operator stations.

To better understand those factors which increase mining costs in Alaska, a Bureau of Mines study was conducted to compare the estimated costs of operating a 100,000-tpd open pit copper mine located on a hypothetical ore body in the Lake Clark area, Alaska, with the costs of mining a similarly sized hypothetical copper ore body near Tucson, Ariz. The information derived should be beneficial to the State and Federal governments in appraising the potential for development of large, low-grade porphyry copper deposits in south-central Alaska. Conventional mining and concentrating methods were assumed, and capital and operating costs were derived using flowsheets and standard costing methods. The total price required for copper mined in Alaska and Arizona was $1.12 and $0.63 per pound, respectively, plus or minus 20 percent. These values were obtained assuming no leaching of low-grade copper, recovery of gold, silver, and molybdenum as byproducts, 100-percent equity financing, and a 12 percent discounted cash flow rate of return. The average domestic and international prices for copper in July 1973 were $0.60 and $0.916 per pound, respectively. The existence of a developed transportation and power system in Alaska would have reduced capital and operating costs subs tantially. The required price for copper would have declined from $1.12 to $1.05 per pound, plus or minus 20 percent.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States in 1981 was approximately $340 million, of which 37 % was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), 39% manufactured abrasives, and 24% natural abrasives. Production and shipments of natural abrasives, excluding emery and industrial diamond, decreased in quantity 9% and 7%, respectively, when compared with that of 1980. Emery showed the largest change in output, decreasing 30% in quantity and 20% in value. Production of nonmetallic .manufactured abrasives material plus shipments of metallic abrasives material decreased 5% in quantity but increased 4% in value. Nonmetallic manufactured abrasives consisted of aluminum oxide (fused) and crude silicon carbide produced in the United States and Canada and accounted for 63% of the value of all manufactured abrasives. Metallic abrasives shipments included chilled and annealed iron shot and grit, steel shot and grit, plus cut wire, aluminum, and stainless steel shot and equaled 37 % of the value of all manufactured abrasives.

A study of mining methods and underground practices as they influence injury from falls of roof or coal reveals data as to the location in the mine where such injuries occur with the greatest frequency and as to some of the methods and practices which are in use for the prevention of injury. This paper, which presents statistics bearing on the frequency and place of occurrence of accidents and discusses regulations and practices which have resulted in a low-frequency rates from falls of roof and coal in a few representative mines, takes its information from mine-accident reports and from the results of studies conducted in a group of 80 mines in the bituminous coal fields of Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The statistics from this group of mines cover periods of one to four years but average 2 years and 7 months. During this time these mines produced over 110,400,000 tons of coal, equivalent to one-fifth of the annual production of all bituminous mines in the United States. The coal beds of the mines in the group studied are mostly flat, with local pitches of moderate degree. A number of mining plans are in use, each of which follows a general system of multiple entries, gross entries, and rooms. Room and pillar in panels either advancing, retreating, or half advance and half retreat, and the block system are employed. The methods of pillar extraction are by splitting, slabbing, pocket-and-stump, and open end. It is hoped that in presenting some of the details of the methods and practices at particular mines of this group which have commendable records in the prevention of injury some goad may accrue to many other bituminous mines which have similar natural conditions.

Building stone, cassiterite, kaolin, gold, lime, and peat were the only commodities mined, The country's main economy was in agriculture, primarily in coffee exports. Tribal violence occurred again, between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes, causing an estimated 50,000 deaths, mainly in rural and mining areas. The inflation and a large deficit continued. The country continued to import cement, fertilizers, oil, and petroleum products. Burundi possessed numerous small gold deposits. The northwest and north-east were the country's two most important gold-bearing regions. A large kaolin deposit was found at Ngozi, and its mining was specified in the fifth 5-year development plan for 1988-1992. In the area of Rugombo, limestone was being explored with the intention of opening a cement plant.

"INTRODUCTION North Carolina has been the leading producer of mica in the United States, accounting for roughly 50 percent of the Nation's output. The producing area is a belt some 100 miles in width lying in the Mountain and Piedmont sections in the western part of the State. Ashe, Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Transylvania, Rutherford, Cleveland, and Lincoln Counties supply the bulk of production, while small amounts have been produced in Gaston, Catawba, Burke, Wilkes, Yadkin, Stokes, and Person Counties.To assist the operators and expedite the production of mica during the recent emergency, the Bureau of Mines drilled four of the more promising mica properties in this State. The results of this exploratory program are recorded in this report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines conducted a feasibility study and designed an operational system for consolidating waste coal sludge in a 110-acre pond by applying direct current between buried and floating electrodes. Consolidation would reduce the sludge to half its present volume, there-by extending the working life of the pond as well as creating a safe, stable impoundment. The project was conducted by the Bureau under an agreement with the Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (WIDCO), located near Centralia, WA. Part 1 of this report, published as Report of Investigation 8666 in 1982, covers the results of laboratory tests at the Bureau's Spokane Research Center and of a small-scale field test at WIDeO's coal preparation plant. Test results show the process is efficient and cost-effective when power is applied at low current density. Part 2 (this paper) describes a detailed design for an electrokinetic system to dewater WIDCO's 110-acre pond with a 27.4-acre electrode array. Densification of the inactive sludge pond will require 3.6 yr of treatment for a total cost of $1,450,000. The study and design are site specific, but design procedures and analyses are sufficiently detailed to serve as a guide for applying the process to any sludge pond.

This report is the 18th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations. The previous 17 reports have covered fiscal years, but this report covers not only the fiscal year from July 1, 1952, to June 30, 1953, but also July through December 1953, to bring the report to a calendar-year basis. Most of the material in this report relates to publications issued during the reporting period, Some work is mentioned briefly on which publications have not yet been issued or on which data are riot expected to be published, for security or other reasons, and in a few instances publications issues before the reporting period but not included in the previous report are mentioned.3/ Further details on the published work described herein may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. During the reporting period, the Bureau directed its research and technologic work on coal toward developing end encouraging increased conservation and more efficient use of our mineral fuel resources through more efficient and safer mining methods and improved methods of preparing and utilizing these fuels. Some significant advances, particularly in coal-mine safety, mining methods, and development and utilization of low-rank coma have been made.

In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

The West Pioneer RARE II study area, No. 1-006 (fig. 1), has Figure 1.--NEAR HERE a high molybdenum resource potential. Two molybdenum-bearing areas are being explored by Utah International and by Cyprus-Moly Corp, Inc. using geophysical exploration and diamond core drilling. The study area also contains potential resources of gold and silver at six prospects: the Bear Paw (Ibex), Black Bear, Coeur d'Alene, Franklin No. 1, Martin, and Maynard. In addition, the Black Rear and the Martin contain possible copper, lead, and molybdenum resources. Most of the workings are caved.
