The Piedmont physiographic province of east-central Alabama lies in a humid subtropical climatic zone. Such an area with mature land forms underlain by rocks rich in feldspars provides conditions condusive to development of gibbsite, a major source of alumina; a raw material for which the United States relies on foreign suppliers for 85 percent of its needs. Gibbsite occurs in the northern and inner sections of the Piedmont Province of Alabama in Coosa, Clay, Randolph, Chambers, Elmore, Tallapoosa and Lee Counties in soils and saprolite derived from amphibolites, granites, feldspathic hornblende gneiss and other gneissic rocks. The major occurrences of gibbsite are in areas underlain by hornblende gneiss in Chambers and Randolph Counties. This region provides the proper physiographic and mineralogical setting for large areas containing up to 25 percent of saprolitic gibbsite. These areas provide potential sources of alumina that could be used to meet the United States future needs. Narrow zones and pockets rich in gibbsite also occur in soil and saprolite derived from areally restricted feldspar rich zones of narrow linear amphibolites in the inner Piedmont and feldspathic zones in various granites distributed throughout the Piedmont.

"The electrical section of the Bureau of Mines has obtained copies of all available State safety rules and regulations in order to make a study of those portions of the codes relating to electrical equipment. While it has been found almost impossible to compare the several codes as a whole, comparison of those regulations dealing with a single subject has proved both interesting and instructive.Sixteen states have rules or enactments having reference to telephones and the present paper covers a compilation of these references. It is believed that data of this kind will be of service to commissions or other bodies contemplating the revision of existing codes.The compilation taken from the various codes follows: State Rules and Regulations.California.Sec. 5 (Par. c) Telephone communication shall be maintained between a co-operative station and each mine which it supplies. This is the final, report submitted for the Contract No. H0220002 with the U. S. Bureau of Mines for the design and development of a Permissible Automatic Data Acquisition System (PADAS) to measure and record roof stresses in underground mines Basically the PADAS is a portable, battery powered, 24-channel data acquisition system designed for safe unattended operation of up to 30 days duration in explosive environments. The unit will accommodate twenty-four pressure transducers or eight borehole deformation gages (or any combination) at distances up to 300 feet from the PADAS to measure pressures up to 10, 000 psig. All 24 channels as a selected group are scanned sequentially at one of several selectable rates.

An instrument using a gamma-ray backscatter technique for determining the weight-percent incombustibles content of coal dust and rock dust mixtures in coal mines has been built and tested. The unit gives a direct readout in per-cent incombustibles for coal mine dust mixtures containing between 50 and 100 percent incombustibles; calibration of the device requires using a sample of the rock dust employed; this is usually limestone but occasionally dolomite or gypsum. A small americium-24l source is used with a scintillation detector whose output feeds a rate meter. The source-detector geometry used was chosen to reduce the effects of variation in bulk density. Accuracy of the system is within ±3 percent for most mixtures. The instrument is portable and completely self-contained; the rechargeable batteries supply power for 300 to 400 determinations.

Toxic fumes generated during shot firing under actual mining conditions were measured. Eight shots with Gelodyn-2X and seven shots with Tovex-100 4VT were monitored. Average CO values for Gelodyn-2X and Tovex-100 4VT were 0.20 ft3/lb and 0.09 ft3/lb, respectively. Average N0x values for Gelodyn-2X and Tovex-100 4VT were 0.049 ft3/lb and 0.026 ft3/lb, respectively. The results obtained with these in-mine tests will be used by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the development of a large chamber method of measuring fumes from shotfiring of explosives.

Michigan is becoming one of the important oil-producing States of the country. The amount of crude oil produced within its boundaries has increased from only 4,000 barrels in 19253/ to nearly 16 million barrels in 19935.4/ The Bureau of Mines method of crude-oil analysis and classification-indicates that the oils from the several producing fields are predominantly paraffin-intermediate-base, wax-bearing crudes. In general, they will yield 25 to 35 percent of highly paraffinic gasoline and about the t- me amount of kerosene and gas-oil combined, 7.2 to 15 percent of lubricating oil stock, and 20 percent of residuum with a carbon residue or about 6 to 7 percent. In addition, there appears to be some correlation between certain properties of the crude oils and both the geographical location and geological structure of the oil-producing areas within the State. These general conclusions are based on the analytical data presented in this report, which is one of a series of papers that record the general characteristics of crude oil from the many producing fields of the United States. This report discusses briefly the oil fields of Michigan and the characteristics of the crude oils produced from them. The analyses of 15 samples are given. The electrochemistry of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide was investigated at a variety of electrode materials in different supporting electrolytes. A portable detector for carbon monoxide was developed using a porous gold anode in perchloric acid supporting electrolyte. This detector has two full scale ranges, 0-100 ppm and 0-500 ppm. A portable detector for mixtures of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide was developed using a porous silver cathode in sulfuric acid supporting electrolyte. Nitrogen dioxide was determined in the gas stream by electroreduction. The nitric oxide in the gas stream was oxidized to nitrogen dioxide by passing it over Cr(VI) on firebrick. Electroreduction gave the sum of NO + N02. Analog circuitry was used to display the amounts of NO and N02 separately. Two ranges were available for each gas. They were 0-10 and 0-50 ppm for NO and 0-2 and 0-10 ppm for N02.

The Cuyuna range in central Minnesota has been the source of substantial tonnages of, manganiferous iron ores for almost four decades. To Increase the Nation's self-sufficiency in manganese reserves, the Bureau of Mines initiated a comprehensive investigative program to determine and develop the potential manganese reserves in the region. In the course of compiling all available information on the Cuyuna range, the Scallop-Todd lease appeared to be an area having favorable possibilities for developing substantial reserves of manganese. Early drilling on this lease indicated considerable tonnages of material relatively high in manganese. More recent drilling substantiated the size of the deposit but Indicated lower manganese values. However, beneficiation tests of samples obtained from the recent drilling indicated that the material was amenable to concentration.

Explosives have been fired electrically for several decades. Mountains have been tunneled, deep shafts sunk, extensive coal and metal mine workings excavated and, in times of war, railroads, buildings, bridges, and fortifications have been destroyed by means of electrically fired explosives. Modern engineering depends so much on explosives that their safe and efficient handling and especially their detonation are of prime importance to all those connected with the use of explosive agents. Electric shot-firing is only one method of igniting explosives, but it is rapidly spreading and because of certain inherent safety features should be encouraged. Data collected by the Bureau of Mines indicate that in the United States a large percentage of the blasting in quarries, shafts, and tunnels, and from 15 to 25 per cent of the blasts in mining operations, are set off electrically. The Bureau of Mines is interested in electric shot-firing because of its use in mining, and especially because electric methods, when properly applied, are undoubtedly safer than other methods commonly used.

The Bureau of Mines performed tests to compare the effectiveness of steam and of water sprays to reduce respirable dust levels at mineral processing plants. By applying 0.22 wt pct water vapor as steam to product material, a 64-pct respirable dust reduction was recorded. By applying the same amount of moisture with water sprays, only a 25-pct dust reduction was recorded. By increasing the moisture content up to0.5 pct using water sprays, the dust reduction was increased to 55 pet, which was still less than the dust reduction achieved by adding less than half that amount of water in the form of steam.

Reduce the respirable dust exposure of the roof-bolter operator when downwind of the continuous miner, particularly in mines where respirable dust standards are more stringent because of silica in the respirable dust. Dust Sources If roof-bolter dust levels are excessive, the bolter dust collector should first be checked to ensure that it is operating properly. (Technology News No. 219 provides information on how to spot and repair bolter dust collector problems). If the roof-bolter dust collector is operating properly and dust levels are still excessive, then the source is most likely a continuous mining machine operating upwind. In many sections, the roof-bolter operator must work on the return side of the continuous miner during part of the production cycle. Intergrated energy balances and energy flows were constructed and quantified for State, regional, and national levels from four separate supply and demand commodity balances for coal, dry natural gas, petroleum and natural gas liquids, and utility electricity. These commodity balances were integrated by source and sectors through conversion and aggregation of their components to energy equivalents expressed in British thermal units (Btu). A summarization of the total gross energy components of supply and demand for commercial energy derived from direct fuels, hydropower and nuclear power, based on individual States and regions, is tabulated for 1960 and 1965. Pertinent computerization details and more than 500 individual State and regional printout tables, in both original commodity units and Btu's, are shown. Using these data, energy flows between States and regions were calculated to identify surplus and deficit energy areas. Report emphasis is on the conceptual aspects of integrated energy balances, rather than on the development of missing State energy data.

The Torpedo Copper mine in the Organ Mining District, Dona Ana County, N. Mex., was discovered In 1899. Production was begun immediately and continued until 1907. Since 1907 very little ore has been produced, although Many individuals and companies have been interested in the property at one time or another. Approximately 6,621 feet of diamond-core had been completed on the property before 1949. The results from some of this drilling were unsatisfactory because of the poor core recovery. In addition to its investigation of the Torpedo ore deposits, attention was given by the Bureau of Mines to obtaining better core recovery through the use of special equipment and techniques. This project was begun October 3, 1949, and was completed April 30, 1950. Four diamond-drill holes totaling 2,140.5 feet, which includes 18.2 feet of overlap in a deflected hole, were drilled. All drilling was done with a Government-owned hydraulic-feed drill with some special rods and core barrels, in addition to the usual equipment. The over-all core recovery was 89.5 percent. Omitting the drilling in overburden where little or no core was desired, the recovery was 94.6 percent. Core recovery in the ore zones averaged 95.2 percent. This paper describes the location, the general features of the area, the geology, the Bureau of Mines procedures, and the results attained by these procedures.

A Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the effect of specimen volume on the apparent tensile strength of disks of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite. The investigation used a technique developed by the Bureau to determine apparent tensile strength. Because the test specimens were selected without macroscopic defects, that is, cracks, joints, and planes of weakness, the strength variations are solely due to microscopic features. Several replications of each test were performed. Data for each set of specimens were fitted to a power law of the form y = axb, where y = apparent tensile strength, x = specimen volume, and a and b are constants. This power law is essentially a form of Weibull's theory. The average coefficients of correlation for St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite were 0.85, 0.53, and 0.78, respecitvely. In all cases a decrease in strength with increasing volume was noted; in the extreme case, a decrease of 40 pct was noted with an elevenfold increase in volume. The decrease in strength with increasing specimen volume is explained in terms of Weibull's theory.

The objective of this project was to investigate the feasibility of analytical techniques potentially capable of determination of Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca and Fe in 1 to 2 mg samples of respirable coal mine dust, in a total analysis time of not more than 10 minutes per sample, using equipment capable of being truck mounted for field-laboratory operation. It was not essential that the technique be non-destructive, but the chosen technique is, and this enables the analysis to be performed directly on the 37 mm diameter membrane filter on which the respirable dust sample is normally collected. The sensitivity requirements are therefore quoted in terms of the units of measurement, µg/cm2. The detection limit (3o of the background criterion) should be 0.5 µg/cm2 or less. The precision should be 5% or better, at concentrations above which the detection limit is not the determining factor.

The quantity and behavior of gases in metal and nonmetal mines were monitored to provide background information on feasibility of incipient fire detection systems. Monitoring was conducted during working and nonworking periods at intake air, return air and working places. Gases generated during diesel operations and shot firing were of particular interest. Gases which were monitored were CU, C02, N0, N02 and S02: submicron particulate concentrations were monitored also. Commercially available instruments were used and included nondispersive infrared, electrochemical and chemiluminescent types. The ratios of the various gases generated during diesel operations and shot firing were similar to those expected from an incipient fire, with the exception of the C02/NOx ratio, which is sufficiently different to be considered for early fire warning. Samples taken near leaking bulkheads showed high C02 levels and low C0 levels, the reverse of anticipated behavior in coal mines.

Volume II of the final report concerns the application of sensitive ground-fault interrupters (GFIs) to ac utilization circuits in U.S. mines The main concepts examined are shock prevention and methods for reducing nuisance tripping. The research involved a literature search, input from previous Bureau of Mines contracts, and contacts with electrical manufac-turers and mining personnel. Following this background work, several devices that showed promise were obtained and tested. Results of testing indicate the existence of GFIs that may be modified to perform adequately on U.S. mining systems. A recommended set of guidelines is included in the report, covering design, construction specifications, and performance tests.
