HYDROMETAL is using suitable technology to reintroduce lost metal units into the industrial cycle, thereby saving resources and energy while keeping the environment cleaner. Hydrometal is treating on average 60000 t per year of complex materials through a unique hydrometallurgical recycling concept. Zn, Cu, Sn, and Pb are the most important in volume, but in the last 15 years, Hydrometal has also developed a few specific recycling treatments for the minor metals including Ge, In, Co, etc. In 2010, Hydrometal commenced the recycling of RE (Rare Earths) from wastes generated by the RE refining industry in Europe and has decided to initiate new recycling projects for the RE recovery from the magnet or glass industries. Two case studies of recycling of materials in our integrated hydrometallurgical facility (Hydrométal) in Belgium are discussed: recycling of cerium from polishing sludges; and recycling of Ni- Co from cement produced in the zinc industry.

Stainless steels such as 316L or 304 are normally relatively resistant to attack by nitric acid. However research at Sherritt International’s Fort Saskatchewan Operation reveals that when the stainless steel is immersed in an aqueous system in which nitric acid is used to dissolve metals such as cobalt or nickel, the steel can be seriously corroded. Sherritt is patenting a simple process for arresting the corrosion via the use of copper. This process is expected to substantially eliminate corrosion in processes where nitric acid is used to dissolve metals attached to a stainless steel substrate.

Grand Junction, Colorado’s legacy with uranium mining and milling serves as a model attracting international interest. Access to water and central location to carnotite ore containing uranium and vanadium resulted in the World War II military creating a site in Grand Junction for developing extraction techniques; subsequently, several commercial mill sites were built in the area. Uranium mills produced ore into the 1970’s as well as tonnes of radioactive waste tailings. Tailings contain radium that emits radon gas. Despite the radiation hazard, sandy tailings were added to concrete and became incorporated into roads, schools, businesses and homes. Clean up of sites containing tailings and mill sites began in the 1970’s involving city, state, and federal officials. The Climax mill site had become an auto junk yard mixed with mill tailings. A new disposal site was built out of town and away from the river in the 1990’s. After Climax mill tailings were removed to the disposal site, the land sat vacant for two decades until citizens and city officials developed a masterplan for the riverfront property. The Las Colonias river park is being built in stages including an amphitheater, gardens, businesses and parks. One of the biggest obstacles to site remediation and reuse was overcoming public outrage, fear, and lack of trust which made funding sources scarce.

Insights into uranium mining projects of the future can be gained by a careful statistical analysis of past and present deposits, as well as an examination of recent trends for uranium resource evaluation and primary uranium production. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provides the necessary data and corresponding mechanisms as inputs for methodologies that enable strategic and scientific evaluations of long-term security of supply uranium required to sustain the demand for nuclear fuel. Sustainability of the uranium mining industry and subsequently new uranium mines of the future requires innovation and expertise to lower operating costs, maintain or improve uranium recovery while meeting the requirements of stakeholders in regard to protection of the environment and safety of the workers and general public.

Municipal governments recognize the importance of aggregates in the local economy and the need to manage this resource in the interest of the public good. They have encountered problems with regulating the industry and the dichotomy between the urban need and the rural source. They have suffered from a lack of financial benefit, an adequate aggregate inventory, provincial strategy, economic information and public understanding. A provincial strategy for ensuring the availability of aggregate supplies to developing areas of the Province is essential. The Province should also be responsible for licensing, research, technical expertise on rehabilitation, public education and financial assistance. Upper-tier municipalities (regions or counties) should assume responsibility for resource management, including resource availability, demand characteristics, truck routing, phasing of resource development and sequential land-use planning. Area municipalities (towns and townships) can best determine the social and environmental impact of a specific aggregate development proposal and should therefore have the primary responsibility for the location of new pits and quarries. They should also have the authority to supplement provincial regulations concerning operating standards and the phasing and standards of site rehabilitation.

THE recent production of important quantities of high-grade muscovite at the Purdy mine, near Eau Claire, Ontario, bas brought that district into prominence and bas added another strategic mineral to the list of Canadian products. The discoveries are thirteen miles west of Mattawa and about two miles north of the Trans-Canada highway and the Canadian Pacific railway. HISTORY Clear mica of low power factor is in considerable demand in Canada and in the United States for war purposes such as radio and telephone condensers, aircraft spark-plugs, radio tubes, and transformers. Some muscovite (white mica) bas been produced in North Carolina and New Hampshire, but the United States trade bas depended largely on importations of muscovite from India and of phlogopite (amber mica) from Madagascar. For many years Canada bas been a substantial producer of phlogopite, but was unable to compete extensively in the United States with importations from abroad. Canadian production of muscovite bas been negligible as no important deposits were known. Ever since the construction of the Canadian Pacific railway, attempts have been made from time to time to mine the pegmatite dykes in and near the Eau Claire area, but, although some feldspar has been mined, no appreciable muscovite was produced. Lace in 1941, J. Purdy and H. MacDonald discovered a dyke containing large crystals of high-grade muscovite from which they are reported to have sold $700 worth of mica. They recorded claims 35974 and 35975 in December, 1941, and claim 36095 in May, 1942.

"One of the corporate values mentioned by many companies deals with respect for people. This paper discusses one aspect of this value, namely, the need for clarity of accountabilities and authorities. The job of the manager in achieving this goal is analyzed and the benefits of enhancing the manager-employee conversation outlined. Terms such as integrity, respect for the individual, continuous improvement, continuous learning, teamwork, speed, and innovation are quite common. The company-specific values are typically developed by the top executives of the company, and then tested with a broader group of employees. Where the process works, employees have a good understanding of what behaviour is expected of them in doing their work, in making difficult decisions, and in interacting with others.Having spent considerable time in his career investigating and studying the management systems at over 50 of the most successful companies in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan, the author has had the opportunity to visit organizations such as Hewlett-Packard, 3M, Xerox, Intel, Toyota, NEC, Komatsu, British Airways, and Eastman Chemical. These experiences, together with the work of many other researchers, including the work of Dr. Elliott Jacques, have helped significantly to form the thoughts expressed below.Rather than reviewing the creation of corporate values and their deployment through the organization, these remarks focus on issues over which managers and employees have some control. The value in which managers can have significant impact deals with people and the respect shown them in the workplace. The component of respect to be emphasized is to be clear about expectations or accountabilities for oneself and the people who report to you, and to ensure that personal authority matches those expectations."

"Traditionally, the geologists of Canada have been occupied with the tasks of finding new mineral bodies, locating gas and oil fields or hunting for economic deposits of industrial minerals. A very minor percentage of graduate geologists have applied their skills to solution of the ""urban blight"" or employing their understanding of ""Nature"" for the optimum use of land by mankind. However, things are changing quickly. The role of the geologist in the planning process is being established. It is an exciting time! Geologists are now being consulted on a wide range of urban planning problems. These vary, tor example, from assessment of the geological environment for the new communities of Erin Mills and Meadowvale, which will have total populations in excess of 100,000 people (truly a satellite city), to a complete geological/ geohydrological assessment of the new sanitary landfill for the city of Guelph.Use of geologic techniques and methods for urban studies must be enhanced with certain skills not taught, in the past, to the geologist. These include airphoto interpretation, soil mechanics, geohydrology, municipal engineering and highway engineering to mention a few. The geologist has the unique training to assess the natural environment and to discover, warn and explain the implications of man's attempt to command his environment."

Emission of perfluorocarbon gases, CF4 and C2F6, produced during anode effects from aluminum electrolytic cells are a significant part of the total equivalent CO2 emitted by aluminum plants. With the current concerns about global warming, the reduction of these PFC gases is a key issue in reducing greenhouse gases for a smelter and achieving GHG emission agreement goals. This paper will present the approach taken by the Alcoa vertical-stud Soderberg plant in Baie-Comeau to reduce GHG emissions generated during anode effects and close emission gaps with other Alcoa Soderberg plants. The approach has been to adapt the existing technology in place at the Baie-Comeau Soderberg plant. PFC emissions were lowered by reducing both the anode effect duration and frequency through different methods. Examples of change include: implementing skimming practices and wider side crust break area for better alumina dissolution in bath, increasing the ratio between reacted and pure alumina, reducing the time to declare anode effects in the potrooms, implementing best work practices and finally educating the workforce on the importance of reducing PFC emissions.

"A GLANCE BACK AT what has happened in the past is often a useful guide to the future, although it should be used mainly to provide a sense of direction rather than a map that must be followed. As a preamble to discussing some of the questions posed by the organizing committee it may be appropriate to briefly review the distribution and careers of the graduates of our Department since the first degree in mining engineering was awarded in 1916. An attempt has been made to keep a record of the locations and careers of the Department's 540 graduates in mining and metallurgical engineering. Almost all of those who graduated before 1930 have now retired, but a very large proportion held positions as senior executives prior to retirement. A major proportion of those who graduated before 1950 are now in what might be considered senior management positions. Those who have 10 to 20 years of experience are generally in work of senior engineering responsibility or in supervisory or junior management ranks, while those who graduated in the last ten years appear to be generally in staff engineering or junior supervisory positions. This classification is admittedly imprecise because it is difficult to determine from a job description whether duties should be considered of an engineering or management nature - a distinction between the two terms is often over-emphasized. Nevertheless, the trend from technical engineering to management responsibilities with seniority and years of experience is clear in the careers that we have been able to follow."

In the framework of the optimization of Teniente Converter operation the new system of automatic flux feeding through gar-gun was implemented in the Potrerillos Smelter, Codelco Chile, Salvador Division. The control algoritm based on simple iron and silica balance adjusted by empirical coefficients was incorporated in the logical programmer. The programmer works in real time gathering information from the plant instrumentation events and introduced chemical assays of concentrate, slag and flux. Through the auto-tuning of the automatic operation the criterions of optimal flux dosage were determined. Four month of operation of the automatic flux feeding system demonstrated the stabilization of magnetite content in the slag in the narrow range from 18 to 20% and the decrease of flux consumption, corresponding to annual savings US$ 340,000. Additionally, the automatic system helps operators in the control room in fast determination of optimal fluxing and avoid the errors in flux dosage affecting the slag quality and its impact on refractory wear.

Ensuite, elle a augmenté son rythme de production successivement à 1800 TPJ en 1990, 3300 TPJ en janvier 2000 et 4500 TPJ en octobre 2000. Agnico-Eagle, fondé par feu Paul Penna, a toujours eu comme politique la participation des employés aux décisions de la compagnie pour le déveleppement de celle-ci. Cet écrit va permettre de mieux comprendre la façon dont la division fût développé.

This paper deals with the drilling and blasting methods employed at the Cassiar mine, which is located just south of the B.C.-Yukon border. It covers both the "pit" and "peak" mining operations. Specific problems, such as working in frozen ground, are discussed, and the breaking characteristics of the various rock formations are outlined. "The fourth concentrate production plant includes the comminution systems and the medium-low intensity magnetic separators (LIMS). Based on different conditions, two types of materials are fed into the plant. Type A: 70% of mine ore and 30% of reject materials from magnetite plant and type B: 100% of mine ore. The goal of the present study was to increase the iron grade and the blain number with low sulfur content in final concentrate as the pellet feed. An appropriate pellet feed should have more than 67% of iron, less than 0.1% of sulfur and a Blain number of more than 1800 cm2/g. The Fe, S and Blain no. amounts for the present concentrate are 66.6%, 0.95%, and 500 cm2/g (feed type:A) and 67.8%, 2.3%, and 450 cm2/g (feed type: B), respectively. In this research, the plant improvement efficiency was evaluated by changing the feed particle size distribution and using the flotation system. Laboratory experiments were designed based on the three circuits:1) LIMS (Low Intensity Grinding Rolls) feed grinding-LIMS test-flotation test2) LIMS feed grinding-flotation test-LIMS test3) LIMS concentrate grinding-flotation testThe best results were obtained using the first circuit at the LIMS feed size (d80) of 132 ?m. The processing results using the circuit no. 1 (feed type: A), showed a LIMS concentrate with 69.8% of Fe and 0.36% of sulfur. In this case, the final concentrate (after flotation) with Fe grade of 70.3%, sulfur content of 0.07% and Blain no. of 1571 cm2/g were obtained. In case of the feed type of B, the LIMS concentrate with Fe grade of 68.7%, and sulfur grade of 1.6% was achieved. Also, the Fe and sulfur contents were 69.3%, and 0.4% respectively with a Blain number of 1112 cm2/g. According to the obtained results, it was suggested that a LIMS feed comminution along with a LIMS and flotation systems are necessary to achieve an appropriate iron and sulfur grades with an acceptable blain number. To reach a concentrate Blain number as a pelletizing feed, a High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) system at the end of the processing line was recommended."

After nine years on a 36 hour schedule and two programs of creeping, the Alcoa Deschambault Potroom of faced the necessity of changing its organization for many reasons: the anodes butts were too small, the anode schedule was unbalanced, the iron content in the metal trends had increased, the metal tapping volume did not convene with crucible capacity and the liquid measurement task was delayed by tapping activities. A kaizen activity inspired the Potroom department to improve the organization. A team of 15 people including the process engineer, the process technician, team supervisors and Potroom operators developed a scenario, which would permit flexibility to creep pots if energy is available and an increase of added value production.This paper will describe the systematic approach, the communication method, the trials, the changes, and our success, along with the problems experienced by the team during the adaptation of Alcoa Deschambault Potroom organization over a 20 month period. The Saganoseki Refinery of Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd., Japan, introduced the ISA 2000® process in 2006 to improve product quality and productivity. After resolving various technical difficulties associated with the process, a current density of 325 A/m2 and electrolytic copper production of 234 000 tons per year were realized in 2018. In recent years, Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery has promoted treatment of recycled materials in addition to copper concentrates. Accordingly, the amount and type of impurities charged to the smelting process have tended to increase. In the electrorefining process, impurities such as nickel and antimony cause anodic passivation and formation of suspended solids, respectively. Although these undesirable phenomena can be avoided by controlling impurity concentrations in the anode and electrolyte to appropriate ranges, this also limits the choice of recycled materials that can be processed by the smelter. To achieve both stable operation of the electrorefining process and flexibility in treatment of recycled materials in the smelting process, Saganoseki Refinery improved the capacity of the impurity recovery processes during 2016 to 2018. This paper describes the expansion of the purification plant to remove and recover nickel and antimony. INTRODUCTION The Saganoseki Refinery of Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd., Japan, introduced the ISA 2000® (wax- less permanent cathode method) in 2006 to improve product quality and productivity. Since then, the refinery has gradually increased current density, and has been committed to establishing stable operation and high productivity via various improvements related to the electrolyte filtration and additive management systems. Figure 1 shows the trends of current density and current efficiency at the refinery. Although the current efficiency temporarily dropped when the current density was raised to 322 A/m2, it consistently exceeded 97% thereafter. At present, stable operation at 325 A/m2 has been achieved and continues.

This paper details a brief history of the Australian gold industry from the 1980s gold boom to the present day, highlighting an industry characterised by innovation in plant design and junior companies prepared to "have a go", in contrast to the conservatism of many larger mining companies. Design flexibility, the innovation of new processes, the preparedness to exchange "process know how" and technology singularly differentiated the gold industry from other sectors during the 1980s to the present. The introduction of two stage crushing, semi autogenous (SAG) milling, and pebble crushing, mill innovations, carbon in pulp (CIP) and carbon in leach (CIL) and the North Kalgoorlie screen etc were all exciting changes in the industry.

"Grinding media consumption rates and their dependence on key operating conditions in semiautogenous grinding mills is analyzed on the basis of a detailed mathematical model recently developed by Moly-Cop´s specialists which describes and takes into account the three primary media consumption mechanisms, namely: abrasion/corrosion, surface spalling and impact ball breakage. The influence of key mill operating conditions – such as ball filling, discharge grate opening, mill speed, lifter profile, and ball quality – on their corresponding grinding media consumption rates is explored via a variety of model simulations, discussing in every case the independent contribution of each of the indicated consumption mechanisms to the estimated total ball consumption rate.INTRODUCTIONA thorough understanding of the independent contribution of each grinding media wear mechanism is extremely important, especially in semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) operations where macrowear (spalling) and ball breakage cannot be ignored or neglected. The high impact conditions imposed in modern SAG milling environments has created serious challenges for grinding media manufacturers since their products must be able to perform with minimal breakage and surface spalling.GRINDING MEDIA WEAR MECHANISMFor SAG milling operations, at least 3 different mechanisms have been identified as the main contributors to the observed overall grinding media consumption, here referred to as: abrasion / corrosion, ball breakage and surface spalling.Wear by Abrasion/CorrosionThe abrasive/corrosive wear mechanism has been discussed in depth in previous publications (Benavente Hector, 2007; Guzman Levi, 2014; Sepulveda and Morrow, 2014). "This paper aims to remind researchers, designers, operators, and managers about the benefits of seeding in the design of precipitation stages in their flowsheet. Including a high density solids (HDS™) process encourages the precipitating solids to form on the surface of existing precipitated particles. This paper discusses the application of the HDS technology at Kennecott Smelter, where the authors have witnessed significant improvements in settling and filtration rates. The authors have also applied this technology at various smelter bleed treatment plants worldwide with similar improvements in precipitation and filtration rates. HDS is a registered trademark of De Nora Water Technologies. RÉSUMÉ Cet article a pour objectif de rappeler aux chercheurs, aux concepteurs, aux exploitants et aux administrateurs les avantages de l’ensemencement dans la conception des étapes de précipitation de leur schéma de traitement. L’introduction d’un procédé des boues haute densité (procédé HDS™, de l’anglais high density sludge) encourage la formation de substances solides précipitantes à la surface des particules précipitées existantes. Cet article porte sur l’application de la technologie HDS à la fonderie Kennecott, où les auteurs ont observé des améliorations importantes au niveau de la vitesse de sédimentation et de filtration. Le procédé HDS est une marque de commerce déposée du fabricant De Nora Water Technologies.INTRODUCTION In 1966, the lead author worked as an assistant smelting metallurgist for the Tsumeb Corporation Limited copper and lead smelter in Tsumeb, Namibia. The smelter produced copper and lead, as well as cadmium and arsenic trioxide as byproducts. The cadmium was concentrated in the lead blast furnace off gas dust, and was collected by a baghouse. The baghouse dust was leached with dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in a batch process. The iron and arsenic in the solution were oxidized with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and basic ferric arsenate (BFAS; Fe(AsO4)x(SO4)y(OH)z·wH2O) was precipitated using milk of lime. The cadmium was cemented from the purified solution using zinc dust."

Introduction During the last twenty years, science and industry have been strenuously endeavouring to discover new sources and new kinds of liquid fuels and to work out suitable chemical methods for their production. One of the new possibilities for the production of liquid fuel on a large scale is law-temperature carbonization of various grades of coal. The use of alcohol as motor spirit, in spite of its relatively low calorific value, is being widely investigated. Its production by fermentation of sugars, its recovery from the sulphite liquors of the paper industry, its production directly from wood and also from calcium carbide, have all been considered. At present the most promising line of investigation would appear to be the further development of those technical processes which yield liquid fuels from coal; since science has shown the possibility of preparing all kinds of liquid fuels and even the complete conversion of coal into oils. The present paper will consider briefly: 1. The production of primary tar by low temperature carbonization of coal. 2. The hydrogenation of coal. 3. The synthetic processes of Dr. Franz Fischer.
