Chemical Mechanical polishing, or CMP, has four components in the polishing interface; namely the polishing pad, the polishing fluid, the abrasives in the fluid, and the surface being polished. Understanding the way that load is transferred between these components is key to understanding and predicting wafer polishing. Numerous models of CMP and the different load sharing arrangements which occur between these four components have been proposed. These include models by Luo and Dornfield (1) and Fu, Chandra and colleagues (2). Other models focus on just one or two loading arrangements, such as `hydroplaning' when all load is transmitted by the liquid in the case of Runnels and Eyman (3). In this work, we consider four possible combinations of load transfer from pad to wafer in CMP. These combinations are listed below in Table 1 and are illustrated schematically in Figure 1. It is important to note the role of scale in this process; the illustrations in Figure 1 are drawn to scale from actual profilometer scans obtained over a length of 5 with particles of 150 nm in diameter. For instance, in hydroplaning, or hydrodynamic lubrication, the lateral force exerted on the polished surface by the particles can be no higher than the fluid shear force developed in the gap between the pad and wafer. This is not expected to generate high rates of material removal from the surface (4). For contact that is largely between the pad and the wafer, such as the regime depicted in Figure ld, the lateral load is transmitted to the wafer by the pad and is hence limited by the pad's low rigidity. This regime is not expected to generate high material removal rates either. The highest levels of material removal are expected from regimes where the mechanical load exerted on the system is transmitted by the particles, in combination with either the fluid or the pad. Under what circumstances does the polishing regime change from one to another? What must occur in order to initiate or terminate contact between the system components? This is an ongoing question in the field of tribology, and has traditionally been viewed in terms of the pressure and velocity applied to the system, the thickness of the fluid film between the two surfaces, and the roughness of those surfaces (4). In this paper, we propose a new mechanism ? that the load on the particles may be sufficient to totally embed them in the polishing pad, at which point they are no longer able to transmit load and polish the wafer surface. This is illustrated schematically in Figure 1(d).

Several thousand parts per billion of uranium are present in some alkaline lake and ground waters of the Okanagan region, British Columbia. To a major extent the uranium content of these highly anomalous waters is controlled by their levels of dissolved bicarbonate. In lakes, dissolved bicarbonate and the organic content of the sediment largely control the partitioning of uranium between sediment and water. This relationship is found to a lesser extent in alkaline creeks, and transported geochemical anomalies in soils appear where uranium-bearing alkaline ground waters have encountered organic materials. There is a possibility that young, near-surface deposits (with very low radioactivity) are forming from these uraniferous waters.

The behavior of dicalcium silicate in NaOH-NaAl(OH)4-Na2CO3 solution is of significance for controlling the silica level in the production of alumina via the sintering process. Dicalcium silicate samples were obtained through a twostep approach: coprecipitation of calcium and silicate from CaCl2-Na2SiO3-NaOH solutions; and calcination of the hydrated precursor at 1200°C for 4 hours. The optimization of the synthesis parameters including temperature, solution concentrations and aging time was also investigated. Xray diffraction (XRD) and chemical analysis show that the calcined solids include dicalcium silicate with trace amounts of wollastonite. The solubility of the synthesized dicalcium silicate in HCl, NaOH, mixed NaOH-NaAl(OH)4 and NaOH-NaAl(OH)4-Na2CO3 solutions was determined. It was found that the solubility increases with increasing HCl and NaOH concentration. The effect of temperature on the solubility in HCl solutions is limited, but the solubility decreases with increasing temperature in NaOH solutions. The solubility of dicalcium silicate in NaOH-NaAl(OH)4 and NaOH-NaAl(OH)4-Na2CO3 solutions was shown to increase with increased temperature, Al(OH)3 and Na2CO3 concentration. The BromleyZemaitis model for the aqueous electrolyte system was selected to predict the solubility of dicalcium silicate. The model’s predictions yielded certain success compared with experimental solubility data.

"This paper focuses on a number of interesting results to establish the theory and principle of air-deck blasting. It also gives the mechanism of breakage that takes place in air-deck blasting under varying charge load conditions. With these aspects in mind, the mine management can implement this up-coming technology to enhance safety and higher productivity. IntroductionThe method of air-decking has become an increasingly popular technique in production and presplit blasting. In the blasthole, an explosive column is combined with an airchamber. The main aim of the technique is to control breakage through effective distribution of explosive energy and thereby enhance uniform rock fragmentation. An air column lowers the initial pressure of the explosive products and simultaneously increases the time of interaction for the detonation front with the surrounding rock, which enhances rock breakage.To study air-deck blasting, CMRI initially conducted experiments using indigenously developed, low-cost wooden spacers of different sizes and strengths. Air-deck blasting was first tried using these spacers in 1993 at Jambad OCP, ECL and Chasnalla OCP, IISCO. The experiments were extended in 1994 at Bermo Mine, DVC. The results were subsequently published by Pal Roy et al., in 1995. It is worth mentioning that the performance of air-deck blasting during this period was only compared with conventional blasting practices without going into detail of the theory behind the process."

Although most in situ operations in Alberta do not encounter significant problems during resource extraction, there have been a few documented occurrences of oil or steam releases as a result of compromised caprock seals. The objective of the Oil Sands Caprock Integrity Project (OSCRIP) is to characterize the units above and below bitumen zones to determine which geological factors affect the quality of the caprock seal. In addition, geomechanical properties and stress measurements of the bitumen reservoir and overlying units will be examined to provide a better picture of the containment conditions in which in situ operations occur. The information from this study will aid regulatory staff and industry in determining the zone-specific geological and geomechanical factors that could affect the design, operation, and feasibility of in situ recovery projects. The OSCRIP study area (Townships 87 to 99 and Ranges 1 to 13, West 4th Meridian) encompasses the surface mineable area, the northeast extent of the Wabiskaw-McMurray bitumen deposit and the Clearwater Formation, as well as a wide band of the Devonian salt-dissolution zone. Regional geological mapping of the Cretaceous strata focuses on the spatial extent and thickness of the caprock seal. Mapping of the underlying Devonian strata is targeted at better understanding the potential effects of salt dissolution and collapse of overlying strata on the integrity of the caprock seal. Examination of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) bare earth DEM in the study area has revealed localized depressions that may represent sinkholes rooted in subsurface collapse features in Devonian carbonate and evaporite strata. Mapping the location and understanding the timing of salt dissolution-related features and deformation in the Devonian strata will help address questions about the possible effect that geological structures, such as sinkholes, have on the integrity of the caprock, as well as the potential for localized variations in the stress regime of the bitumen zone and overlying units. The stress regime in units above 350 m is such that any induced fractures are believed to be horizontal, and therefore, there would appear to be no mechanisms that would allow these fractures to reach the surface. However, recent incidents have shown that vertical pathways can occur, linking the subsurface to the surface. The final phase of the project will evaluate the changes that may occur in the stress regime under thermal operating conditions in the study area.

ABSTRACT A significant factor in evaluating bitumen recovery from an oil sands mine is the particle size distribution (PSD). Increased understanding of mined ore quality and improvement in predictions of recovery can be achieved through PSD modeling. This paper addresses PSD modeling using geostatistics. PSDs may be described using many discrete particle sizes, making this a challenge. The approach parameterizes PSDs with a few statistics. A lookup table is used to reconstruct the PSDs based on models of the statistics. The workflow is applied to Total E&P Canada’s Joslyn Lease and yields good results that reproduce input statistics without introducing artifacts.

Many underground mining operations use Split Set friction stabilizer bolts for rock support. Currently, however, little has been done to quantify the effects of various rock mechanics and operational parameters on the capacity of frictional support systems. The strength of Split Sets is usually measured by means of a pull test wherein a jacking force is applied to the bolt and a slip load is obtained. In order to evolve a rational design procedure for this type of support, an extensive database of over 900 pull test results from more than 50 mines through- out North America has been assembled and analyzed. Associated relevant rock mechanics parameters (rock type and quality) and operational details (drilling method, bit size, drive time, time to pull test) were also obtained, as completely as possible, for each test. Analysis of the information has yielded several charts that relate pull-out strength to relevant parameters and simple statistical analyses were conducted where necessary. Quantified distributions for pull-out strength were also produced for several operating conditions. The factors that most significantly affect bolt strength have been identified and specific applications to design are discussed. The information presented will assist mining engineers in designing safer and more economic support using Split Sets.

"Slope construction in shale can present some interesting challenges for geotechnical design engineers and contractors alike. There are challenges that can be expected and designed-for; however, all too frequently, such challenges manifest themselves as “surprises” in the field. Common constructability challenges can include those such as drill hole deviation during drilling for controlled blasting; and, excavation slope instability arising from inconsistent perimeter control drilling. Drill hole deviation results from the cumulative effects from both drilling mechanics and rock mass conditions. Once a hole has initiated the deviation trajectory, it is difficult to rectify drill steel position. Although such challenges are not necessarily unique to shale, they are often exacerbated by weak, weathered and transversely isotropic nature of bedrock conditions. All too often, the working assumption is that shale is “soft” and easily excavatable; however, this blanket assumption can prove to be costly. This paper is intended to provide design professionals and contractors with the practical considerations needed to avoid the “surprises” associated with drill hole deviation, and minimize the potential for costly claims.INTRODUCTIONFor all the slopes that have been excavated worldwide, and for such advancements in excavation technology and field characterization, one might be tempted to believe that the industry almost has slope development down to a science. This is frequently not the case, especially for weak/weathered and anisotropic bedrock. Excavation contractors are still pushed to the limits of what their technology can achieve, and engineers are all too often called to the field during construction, to make potentially risky onthe- fly decisions relative to excavatability, short and long-term slope stability, and project safety. Although there have been a host of other research papers and journal articles that have been written on the subject of deviation over the past 30 years (Brown, Geen, Sinha, 1981), the problems associated with drill hole deviation are still all too frequent. This fact is especially true for civil engineering surface excavations in bedrock."

"The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum, with an average reserve gold grade of 1.28 g/t. The ore is high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG), which varies between 73-91%, depending on ore type. Overall gold recovery since start-up is 98.2%, with about 63.5 % coming from the gravity circuit as doré. 2016 cash operating costs, and all in sustaining cost (“AISC”) were $361 and $604 per ounce, respectively.During design, three ore types were tested for GRG content, and based on the high GRG value of all three ore types, the decision was made to treat the full ball mill circulating load by gravity. Once operating, the gravity circuit performance was characterized by performing a detailed gravity audit, which included the ore, cyclone classification, Knelson concentrators, and the Consep Acacia intensive leach system. The deeper ores contain significant pyrrhotite, and this created some unusual challenges that had to be overcome. This paper presents the gravity circuit design process, the circuit commissioning, and the audit results and ongoing improvements.IntroductionHeadquartered in Vancouver, Canada, B2Gold Corp. was founded in 2007. Currently, B2Gold has five operating mines, and numerous exploration projects in various countries, including Nicaragua, the Philippines, Namibia, Mali and Burkina Faso. The Otjikoto Mine is located in the north-central part of the Republic of Namibia. It is situated approximately 300 kilometers north of Windhoek, the country’s capital, within the Province of Otjozondjupa. The Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element (REE) Project in Malawi is a near surface carbonatite-hosted deposit with synchysite and apatite as the key REE bearing minerals. A strong focus has been placed on understanding the REE mineralogy of the Songwe Hill carbonatite as REE mineralogical characterization is a crucial component at all steps, ranging from exploration to production, in the development of REE deposits. Extensive mineralogical work has been completed at Camborne School of Mines (CSM), Natural History Museum (NHM) London, British Geological Survey (BGS), Nottingham, Aberystwyth University, Wales, Mintek, South Africa, and SGS Inc. Canada (SGS). The following analytical techniques were used: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and QEMSCAN®. The detailed studies have demonstrated that while synchysite is light-REE enriched as expected, apatite, abundant in all stages of carbonatite emplacement at Songwe, is anomalously enriched in mid- to heavy-REE relative to apatite in other carbonatite deposits. The distribution of REE within synchysite and apatite at Songwe has had important implications for the direction of the metallurgical work with respect to the behaviour of light and heavy REE through the flotation and hydrometallurgical stages of the flow sheet.

"The agitator design for nickel high pressure acid leach autoclaves (HPAL) is critical with regard to the process result, i.e., the recovery rate. Further considerations during the design phase are the avoidance of acid hot spots which reduce the lifetime, due to corrosion of the wetted parts, including components manufactured from titanium. Besides the process knowledge to design HPAL autoclaves, tools such as, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) supplemented by lab testing allow the design of optimized agitation systems. This paper describes the effect that different feed point locations have on instantaneous blending of the reactants. Furthermore, experiments and CFD show where abrasion issues might occur and how to obtain information about the static and dynamic forces acting on internals. We show how simulations can be validated by lab testing to ensure that the CFD models are applied in an appropriate way.INTRODUCTIONAgitated systems in hydrometallurgical processes have to comply with multiple process tasks and in many cases have to withstand extreme operation conditions such as pressure up to 50 bar, elevated temperatures of up to 250°C and exposure to very acidic or alkaline environments and abrasive ores. The process tasks range from instantaneous mixing of reactants, homogeneous suspensions of up to 65% wt. solids with coarse and heavy particles, enhancing the solid-liquid mass transfer for leaching, dispersing large volumes of reactants (gas-liquid, liquid-liquid mass transfer) and moreover to transport generated heat e.g., from exothermic reactions through the vessel walls or internal heat exchangers if required. For economies of scale, agitator systems have reached sizes of 5000 m³ for large open leach tanks with impeller diameters of approx. 6 m, while autoclaves nowadays have exceeded 5.5 meters in diameter with a power demand for a single compartment drive between 300 - 400 kW. In parallel all process industries require a more efficient use of resources, to generate less by-products and higher yields, while ore-bodies tend to be less qualitative and new process routes (e.g. direct leach) are developed. Besides all these facts the mixing solution must be robust and economic. In this paper we want to address our approach in the development and designing of HPAL agitation equipment."

"Data from the South Fork Pit Area of the Bullmoose deposit in northeastern British Columbia are used to demonstrate the usefulness of microcomputers to the on-site geologist. The technique utilizes a series of digital surf aces in the form of a network of points to define various geologic parameters such as seam positions, topography and coal quality characteristics. Manual digitizing, kriging and combinations of these techniques are used to calculate these digital surfaces, the best method depending upon the type and quality of the data in question. Digital surfaces, each modelling a specific feature when combined and manipulated with the computer form a powerful tool, the deposit model. The resultant model, containing all the surfaces, is used to examine seam and inter-seam thicknesses, deposit volumetrics, seam quality characteristics and the adequacy of sampling.IntroductionCoal deposit modelling using computer-based techniques has become routine. However, a geologist working in the field, without access to mainframe or minicomputer, ha s considerable difficulty implementing these procedures. However, microcomputers, which are portable and inexpensive can handle exploration data, perform various geological analyses, and produce deposit models virtually at the same time as the data is being collected. For the on-site geologist this means that quick access to the results of such modelling could point out inadequacies in deposit definition and trends in coal quality deserving investigation."

Metallurgical characterizations of the collective (Cu/Mo) and selective flotation plants were carried out in Minera Los Pelambres, Chile. The selective plant allows the valuable minerals of Cu and Mo to be separated. The evaluation involved two surveys consisting of metallurgical sampling as well as residence time distribution (RTD) measurements to determine load distribution. The RTD data were obtained in real-time by means of the radioactive tracer technique. In addition, metallurgical data was reconciled and supported by effective residence times. In the collective plant, a performance comparison of parallel rougher circuits was carried out, which included a bank of six mechanical cells of 250 m3 and banks of nine mechanical cells of 130 m3. In the selective plant, the Cu and Mo evolution along the plant was evaluated. The results in the selective plant allowed for performance evaluation of mechanical and pneumatic cells in primary flotation. In both plants, mineral losses were evaluated and their relationship with circuit configuration (cell types and circuit layout) was determined. The metallurgical characterization was a powerful tool to evaluate circuit performance and to detect improvement opportunities at industrial scale.

Luscar Stereo commenced construction of the mine at Coal Valley, Alberta, in August, 1976. It is designed to produce approximately 2.5 million clean short tons of steam coal annually - 2.0 million tons per year being committed to Ontario Hydro and 0.5 million tons per year being committed to Neptune Terminals for sale on the export market. The project involves constructing a heavy-media coal preparation plant, erecting a 42-cubic-yard dragline, constructing a shop/office complex, and developing three surface mining zones and associated facilities. As there were no existing facilities in the Coal Valley area, it was necessary to establish access roads, an airstrip, temporary utilities, fuel supplies, a construction camp, rail upgrading and communication services.

While the words "" ore"" and ""ore pass"" are used here, such transfer systems ca n be used for any broken rock.The most extensive ore pass systems are found in caving and sublevel stoping mines. Extensive ore pass systems are also found in multilevel mines having steeply dipping orebodies. In more flat-lying orebodies , ore pass systems are sometimes used in conjunction with conveyor systems .Two decades have passed since the principles of the flow of bulk solids were formulated (Jenike, 1961, 1964; Johanson and Colijn, 1964; Kvapil , 1965). However, few published papers are available that discuss the design criteria for ore pass systems. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide the information necessary for good o re pass design .Rock Flow in Ore Pass SystemsIf an ore pass system is to fulfill its function, the transfer o f material must occur in an orderly fashion and in such a way that the full size of the opening is employed effectively. Apart from un controlled flow at the drawpoint, or outlet , whose design will be considered later in this paper, two occurrences may impede flow in an ore pass, namely:• Hangups due to interlocking arches.• Hangups due to cohesive arches.Prevention of each of these problems will be discussed in succeeding sections of this paper. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of as-built industrial plant models plays an important role in revamping planning, maintenance planning, and preparation for dismantling during the lifecycle of industrial plants. Recently, the 3D reconstruction of existing industrial plants was conducted using laserscan data to make surveying processes more efficient. However, the current 3D reconstruction process from laser-scan data is still limited due to the need for significant human assistance. Although a great deal of effort has been made to efficiently reconstruct 3D as-built industrial plant models, the presence of objects?such as equipment, pipelines, and valves of different sizes and shapes?in existing industrial plants significantly increases the complexity of laser-scan data and makes automating the reconstruction process more challenging in practice. The purpose of this study is to propose a knowledge-based approach for the 3D reconstruction of as-built industrial plant models from unstructured laser-scan data. First, pipelines were extracted from laser-scan data based on surface curvature information and knowledge about pipelines' sizes from existing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID). Once entire pipelines were extracted, they were modeled based on skeleton features. Then, the remaining objects were clustered and grouped separately via the region grouping process. Afterward, clustered objects were retrieved and modeled based on global feature-based matching from the 3D database. Finally, the resulting model was checked to ensure that it was well-reconstructed according to the information regarding the relationships among objects abstracted from the existing P&ID. The preliminary results on actual industrial plants show that integrating knowledge into the reconstruction steps played an important role in the proposed approach and that this approach obtained accurate as-built industrial plant models from unstructured laser-scan data. The proposed approach could be successfully utilized to assist in many applications during the lifecycle of industrial plants.

"Grinding has a marked effect on concentrator recovery and operating cost, and improved operation through automatic control can enhance plant performance. The correct application of automatic control can only be accomplished after the basic process variables and their effect on mill operation have been defined. This paper develops a control system for a closed circuit grinding system. Typical control systems, such as those for feed, water flow, level and circulating load, are discussed. A method of determining controllability, using the calculated reaction curve technique, is outlined. Various successful automatic grinding control applications are discussed and future possibilities are outlined. Although this paper primarily deals with closed wet grinding• circuits, the principles involved can be readily applied to other processes."
