A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the solubilities of copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in silica-saturated iron silicate slags under controlled oxygen partial pressures at 1200 and 1250¦C. Molten copper containing each of the above elements was kept in contact with a slag in a silica crucible for 24 or 48 hours to attain equilibrium. No me- chanical entrapment of metal into the slag was observed. The appearance of the magnetite phase in the slag was avoided by holding oxygen potentials at substantially lower values than that evaluated from available data on iron silicate slags. Solubilities of copper, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in slags were plotted against oxy- gen potentials and both oxidic and atomic types of dissolution were found, except in the case of arsenic, from the dependencies of the solubili- ties on the oxygen potential and from positive intercepts of regression lines when extra- polated to zero oxygen potential. Patterns of successful metallic mineral discoveries in Australia are analysed for the last three decades. A trend towards more discoveries of poorly expressed and blind ore- bodies is evident and can be expected to continue. Discoveries using traditional and conceptual geological techniques have proportionally declined but are expected to continue at a significant level for a decade or so. Improvements in the quality and numbers of geological exploration models and in the quality of available basic geoscience data have aided successful discovery in recent years. Although some orebodies for the Year 2001 have already been found maintenance of a strong mineral inventory demands that more and better geological models are applied. Empirical models need to be improved by critical multi- disciplinary integrated studies of mineral occurrence at all scales. New models can and will be developed by various means. If application of these models is made with all the innovation, initiative and unorthodoxy that can be mustered then new discoveries will result. Greater attention to the surface expression of orebodies will also lead to new discoveries. Review and follow-up of old data in the light of new concepts will provide yet another discovery route.

The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addtion to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

This work aimed at evaluating the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of five samples of a Brazilian gold sulfide mine in a decommissioning process. Three of the most traditional ARD prediction techniques, Standard Acid Base Accounting (Std ABA), Modified Acid Base Accounting (Modified ABA), as static methods, and humidity cells as a kinetic method were tested. Both the Std ABA and the Modified ABA results indicated an acid generation potential for some of the studied samples. In the other cases the results were inconclusive. The five samples were then submitted to humidity cell tests during 27 to 30 weeks. At the end of the period, the leachate pH was stabilised in a range from 3.4 - 4.1 (four samples) to 5 (one sample). The presence of relatively high levels of sulfate and dissolved metals was detected throughout the operation, specifically, Ni and Zn, and less frequently, As. These findings are discussed with the help of the samples mineralogy and Eh-pH diagrams. The results obtained in this investigation indicated potential environmental risks of this mining area. In this particular case, the kinetic tests were shown to be essential to the identification of the samples ARD potential.

A mining joint venture presents a real management challenge to achieve harmony with the other participants in the successful development and operation of a mine. This can best be facilitated by a detailed agreement and guided by a set of joint venture principles which recognise the differences of the interests of the parties and seek to establish sound business and personal principles by which differences not anticipated in the agreement might be resolved. The major and minor co-venturers can and do present potential difficulties to one another. This paper, one of the pair in the joint venture panel discussion session, predominately presents the minor's viewpoint. Usually commercial matters such as project finance, areas of interest, divestment, pre-emptive rights and decision-making can be adequately covered in the agreement. However, when the parties disagree and have difficulty in resolving their differences, the joint venture principles should be used to advantage to resolve relationship difficulties.

The alluvial gold industry of New Zealand is based on the placer deposits in Otago and on the West Coast. Production from these since discovery in the 1850's has been an estimated 480 tonnes (15 million ounces) of gold. Annual output has expanded continuously since 1980 and is expected to be over 2 tonne of gold for 1989.Following a historical review, the characteristics of typical operations, which use hydraulic excavators and mobile trommel units are discussed. Descriptions are then given of alluvial activities in Otago and on the West Coast.

Copper-gold ores have been technically difficult and uneconomical to process due to high consumptions of cyanide. Many copper oxide and sulphide minerals react with cyanide to form copper cyanide complexes, partly contributing to the high level of weak-acid dissociable cyanide in the tailings which is normally experienced during the processing of copper-gold ores. The cost for detoxification, if required for treating these tailings, would further inhibit the development of these copper-gold resources unless the cyanide used for leaching was recovered. Several technologies have been proposed to process copper-gold ores, aiming to recover copper as a co-product and cyanide for recycling in conjunction with the leaching process. A critical review of these processes reveals that a pre-concentration stage (solvent extraction or resin ion exchange) is required. Cyanide is recovered by the conventional Acidification-Volatilisation-Regeneration technique in most cases. A critical evaluation is also provided on technical aspects related to the use of Vitrokele Technology and a newly developed Elutech process in processing copper-gold ores, in particular with its application at May Day Mine.

With the long lead time requirement for engineering and construction of mineral pro- cessing facilities and the costly financing arrangements necessary, effective project management is essential to the successful and timely start up of these major production units. An added complexity is the frequently remote location of such projects and the demands this imposes on efficient project staffing, scheduling, logistics and cost control. Parsons recent experience with major projects such as Greenvale in Queensland and La Caridad in the desert of Northern Mexico and at remote locations like Sar Cheshmeh in Iran are described. The applications being developed for improving project controls through the use of computer techniques such as MSCS-COPES, and readily accessible and versatile transportation means are reviewed.

A wide variety of problems are encountered on a day to day operating basis in the Isa Mine Concentrators. These vary from complex textural problems in the lead-zinc concentrator and their subsequent effect on grinding and flotation to scheduling of converter slag treatment in a chalcopyrite concentrator. With the advent of process control, metallurgists need to specialise and keep up to date with technology improvements. Two blasthole density logging programmes have been conducted on the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine to evaluate the use of this type of logging as an aid to blast pattern design. The first programme also involved the setting up of a Density Test facility with which to calibrate the density probe. The programmes indicated that about 22-23 blastholes can be consistently logged per day at a cost of $1.30 per metre. Even though this is only half the rate required to log the average number of blastholes drilled daily on Mt Whaleback, testwork indicated that no significant loss of accuracy results if only half the holes in a pattern are logged. The major results of the programmes were: 1. The density range for black pyritic Shale is 2.2-2,9 g/cc. 2. The density range for soft to medium hard BIF is 2.1-3.0 g/cc. 3. The density range for hard BIF is 3.0-3.6 g/cc. 4. The front row blastholes show consistently lower densities than the main body holes due to blast damage. 5. A low density zone extending to a maximum depth of 6 m occurs at the top of most blastholes and results from blast damage from the bench above. The variation of austenitic grain size with temperature for the steels XKSlSO and XK9261 was determined using the vacuum ctching technique.It is shown that the effect of temperature on the mean grain intercept is relatively small, up to approximately 950°C. Above this temperature the rate of increase of grain size rises sharply.Within the limits of the 1-4 hr vacuum etching times used the effect of time at temperature is relatively small on the ASTM grain size of the steels.

Epithermal deposits have been defined as the lower temperature end of a spectrum of hydrothermal mineral deposits and are inferred to have formed near the EarthÆs surface. The preservation of an epithermal gold deposit in an Archaean craton is rather problematic, especially when such deposits form clusters or groups as reported for the Pilbara and Yilgarn cratons. For two of the better studied examples of epithermal gold deposits in these cratons, Becher and Wiluna, the evidence that they formed near the Earth surface is non-diagnostic, and the epithermal origin appears uncertain. Despite the simplicity of the original definition, there have been numerous errors in classifying epithermal gold deposits. It is suggested that these errors are primarily due to poor criteria defining the group as there is limited evidence of poor observational science being the cause. The criteria being used to recognise epithermal gold deposits include tectonic setting, ore element suite and quartz vein textures. None of these are diagnostic of epithermal deposits and their link back to the original low pressure-temperature definition of the class is tenuous. There has been definition creep over time as new observations on potential epithermal gold deposits become accommodated within a flexible definition. There is some urgency establishing and then using criteria to reliably identify epithermal deposits. Distinction of epithermal gold from weathered gold deposits is an important step. The Obuasi Mine in Ghana, West Africa is the largest producing gold mine in Africa, outside South Africa. The mine has changed from a mine producing from narrow vein, high grade quartz orebodies to a mine producing from wide, lower grade sulphide rebodies. Traditionally mining methods were cut and fill and sublevel caving. Now the preferred stoping methodologyis long hole open stoping. Transverse or longitudinal methods are both used, dependent on the orebody characteristics. The change has been technically, socially, economically and politicallychallenging and at times has tested the abilities of those responsible for the operation of the mine. However, the benefits have been many. Safety has improved significantly, ounces from underground have doubled. Productivityhas doubled and underground unit costs have reduced bya third. These achievements have allowed the Obuasi mine to staycompetiti ve in this time of falling gold price. During 1999 and 2000 a full review of the mining and processing operations was undertaken, and as a result, the mine is now in a phase of restructure. Efforts are being made across the mine to improve efficiencies and to reduce costs. The future for the Obuasi Mine is an exciting one.

The existence of bias in samples taken by cross-stream sample cutters has been investigated using three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) modelling. Detailed quantitative information on overall extraction ratios, size specific extraction ratios, missed and extra sample components can be made by comparing a reference sample to the actual sample. A key advantage of using this modelling approach over physical experimentation is that the reference sample can be measured on precisely the same portion of the stream of material as the actual sample, thereby allowing the elimination of a significant fraction of the variability and allowing statistically significant results to be obtained using many fewer replicates. Quantitative analysis of results broadly supports the commonly-used rule that the cutter aperture should be at least three times the nominal top-size of the material being sampled, but does not support the commonly-used rule requiring increase in cutter aperture if the cutter speed exceeds 0.6 m/s. Sampler performance can be understood in terms of the balance of forces in the congested region of material formed by the slowing of the particle stream due to collisional interactions around the mouth of the cutter.

The Copper Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited treats approximately 6 Mt of chalcopyrite ore annually. The ore is currently sourced from the 1100 and 3000 orebodies at Mount Isa. Chalcopyrite is the only significant copper bearing mineral, with pyrite, quartz and dolomite being major gangue minerals. Ore is typically 10% chalcopyrite, 11% iron sulphides and 79% non-sulphide gangue. Copper ore is treated through two autogenous mills, two ball mills and a flotation circuit. The autogenous mills replaced a crushing plant, two rod mills and two primary ball mills during 1991. For routine analysis of concentrator performance, composite samples of mill feed, final concentrate and tailings are generated every 4 week period. All samples are sized and size fractions are assayed. Recovery of mineral species to the concentrate are then calculated for each size fraction. Sometimes liberation analysis was also performed by QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Material by Scanning Electron Microscope).

Truck/shovel operations constitute 50 - 60 per cent of the cost of open pit mining operations. Mining companies, therefore, are constantly seeking to close the gap between actual truck/shovel productive capacity and maximum potential truck/shovel capacity. This paper analyses the performance of a mixed truck/shovel fleet in an open cut coal mine in Australia. It analyses operating delays, and proposes a novel graphical means of determining truck-limited or shovel-limited operations. A goal seeking algorithm is advanced in order to maximise truck/shovel match factors (MF) and hence optimise fleet productivity.

The comparatively low winter rainfall, exposure to heavy salt laden coastal winds, and the consequent high evaporation rate, are important considerations in the rehabilitation of the Maslins Beach Sand Pit. The deficit of rainfall over evaporation is assessed at 1085 mm per annum. Such a coastal environment complicates the establishment of plants. The endemic flora found on the Sand Pit environs is mainly low wind-planed shrubs and mat plants. The dunes near the coast support an association dominated by Atriplex cinerea, Spinifex hirsutus, Scirpus nodosus, and Olearia axillaris. The coastal cliffs carry a more diverse vegetation dominated by Beyeria lechenaultii and Eutaxia microphylla. Overburden is used to develop a new landscape to screen operations, batter final faces, and cover rubbish at the nearby Council dump. The early overburden dumps were built with little regard for stability, but the more recent practice of using scrapers has resulted in more stable dumps. The erosion problems created by poor compaction have been controlled by contour banks, diversion drains, bitumen lined run-off drains, and hay mulching.

Croesus Shaft is one of two operating shafts on North Kalgurli Mines Limited's Fimiston lease.At the cessation of gold mining in 1974, the workings at Croesus were allowed to flood. Large quantities of deslimed mill tailings used in filled stopes were washed into the shaft and surrounding drives, making re-access very difficult. The shaft has been desludged from the 9 level to the 15 level, and a loading pocket installed below the 14 level. A vacuum lift unit was installed underground to facilitate the removal of the slime and spillage.Stoping at Croesus was hampered by poor drainage, pumping, and shaft availability. These difficulties have been overcome by utilising an open stoping system for the relatively steep, narrow, high grade stopes. Open stoping has proved to be effective and economic.

Coal water mixture (CWM) is a mix of finely ground coal with water and a small amount of chemicals. It is a new way of transporting and handling coal. CWM can be transported, stored and burned like fuel oil in steam generating boilers. It also has some environmental advantages over both oil and bulk coal. A group comprising Ube Industries Limited, Nissho Iwai Corporation (both from Japan) and Coal & Allied Industries Limited has been working in Japan and Australia since 1987 on a joint feasibility study into the production, transport and marketing of CWM from Australia to Japan. The group has been studying the development of a large-scale CWM plant on Kooragang Island at the mouth of the Hunter River at Newcastle, NSW. The project concepts and engineering plans for the CWM plant are well advanced and other studies related to the project are continuing.

Within the Business Process Improvement Program initiated at Placer Dome during 2003 was the Business Performance Management Project (BPM).BPMÆ s aim has been to extract productivity improvements from individual business units by providing a model for implementing leading practice based management process within the Placer Dome Group, sharing management best practice, injecting new management techniques and instilling a continuous improvement culture. The installation of an underground dispatch system has been a key component of the BPM project at Osborne Mine.Information capture and analysis allows for corrective action to be planned and executed before there is a material impact on the performance of a business unit. This paper briefly describes the principles and practices of effective business performance management, the four processes of a management operating system namely; strategic and tactical planning, implementation and reporting. The identification of business drivers, their measures and associated key performance indicators is discussed. The benefits of an underground dispatch system at Osborne with respect to safety, production and maintenance is described along with the installation process within the mining department that included its configuration, resourcing and roll out.
