With ever-increasing energy costs and the modern focus on system efficiencies, the practice of æventilation-on-demandÆ is gaining momentum. Several examples, ranging from paper studies to practical examples have been recorded and another recent case study is presented here to encourage the practice. In comparison, æcooling-on-demandÆ has received far less attention. This paper explores the possible merits of this practice by investigating the theoretical response of cool intake airways and the thermal interaction between the air and the rock, in order to gain a better understanding of the system behaviour and to quantify the possible savings. A case study is presented that demonstrates the improvements that can be achieved. Recent developments that allow live interaction between ventilation network models and on-line monitoring systems, have the potential for intelligent active control and alarming of ventilation and cooling networks. This will facilitate and maximise the benefits to be derived from ventilation and cooling-on-demand.

A very sensitive high-speed two-colour pyrometer was built to measure the temperature of single particles of sulphide mineral, typi- cally 50 pm in diameter, as they burnt while entrained in a hot gas stream. The pyrometer has been used to study the burning of pyrite and chalcopyrite particles and has thrown light on cenosphere formation. Measured maxi- mum temperatures have been compared with values predicted by diffusion-based models. The pyrometer has also been used to study the burning of small captive pellets (2-9 mmm dia- meter) of lead-zinc concentrate.

Although geophysical methods of prospecting have proved indispensable in the search or oil deposits elsewhere; it is only 'in recent years that they have been used to any significant extent in Australia. The increase in their use has been quite remarkable over the past two or three years, due in Sao small measure to the encouragement given by means of Commonwealth subsidy. There is no doubt that the use of' geophysical methods will coxi-tinue to increase and this increase could be greatly accelerated as and when oil is discovered in commercial quantities,This review of their use A in Australia and the remarks and statistics are confined to work on the mainland. There has been, a substantial amount of geophysical work in Papua, but as operating conditions are so very different to the mainland Papua has been regarded as a separate province.

The present study concerns a new type of mixer-settler unit where coalescence is promoted by means of the phase inversion method (MSPI). Using two different systems (alkaline etching solution û LIX 54 in kerosene and acidic aqueous solution û LIX 984 in kerosene) the influence of the total flowrate, the A/O phase ratio and the hydrodynamic conditions in the nozzles of the scattering device on the extraction and separation efficiencies are studied. Two modes of operation are clearly outlined and a theoretical model predicting the separation efficiency is proposed and compared to experimental results. A comparison between mixer-settlers with classic decanters and the MSPI unit has demonstrated the advantages of the latter where throughputs in the range 20 -25 m3.m-2h-1 can be easily realised.

A brief description of viscosity measuring devices used in Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants is given, including a new On-line viscometer system. The various factors which affect suspension viscosity are identified. The effect of temperature variation on viscosity and viscosity measurement is examined in detail. Practical problems in using a modified Stormer viscometer for laboratory testwork are noted. Likely problems of continuous viscosity measurements are also discussed.

The Australian mining industry is at an interesting stage in its development. Of the large number of mining companies in Australia, some are still solely domestic in their focus. others have made their first tentative forays offshore, and others are global players of significance in the world industry. It is not long ago that the entire industry was almost exclusively domestic in its focus. Very few companies before the early 1980s had ventured offshore, and those that did so were considered quite risque. The initial moves were made mainly by large companies who could afford to lose the funds expended in getting started in a range of offshore locations.

As modern techniques of Petroleum Exploration and Development are rela-tively new in Australia,2 the alien terms "Mud Logging" and "Core Analysis" will bear explanation. Mud Logging and Core Analysis are two of the Petroleum. Industryts most useful "tools" in the successful search for, and development of, commercial oil and gas deposits. Modern Mud Logging could be more accu-xately termed "Drill Cuttings and Mud Gas Analysis". Presently, mud-logging has its greatest application in exploratory wells where subsurface geologic control is at a-minimum.

This paper deals with a few aspects of town planning and town management which affect human relationships within that town. Its scope is limited to the consideration of towns forming an adjunct to a mining operation, and particularly considers these aspects at the Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, town of Parabur doo, Western Australia. Planning and standards of a new town and amenities are-discussed and related through living comfort to an effect on human relation- ships. Town administration and the promotion of many forms of social activities are dealt with in detail to illustrate the importance of quickly forming a cohesive community from a large number of newly arriving individuals. The results achieved by the planning and administration at Paraburdoo are highlighted by involving many residents by way of answers to a questionnaire.

The Hodgkinson Province numerical modelling project aims to develop an improved understanding of the physical conditions that lead to the localisation of goldbearing fluids within known systems and apply this understanding to the prediction of potential new sites of gold mineralisation. The project follows a series of stages from identifying the key parameters required to construct and test simulations through to reverse engineering of known deposits and ultimately applying the conditions identified in the preliminary stages to predictive simulations. Results of the modelling demonstrate strong geometric controls of the localisation of fluids during mineralisation. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Mineral processing is at the hub of the exploration-mining-metals production system. Because of the large volumes of material processed, incremental technology investments can pay off better than for other parts of the system. However, much of mineral processing remains a 'black art', because we are behind in investing in modem technologies. Consequently, we have one of the best opportunities to improve efficiency and competitiveness through the application and transfer of technologies that have already been developed for other industries. The reluctance of minerals companies to place priority in our area is not because we lack new ideas; our senior management has not been convinced, based on our previous results, that such investments will pay off as well as other investment opportunities competing for the same resources. The key is the proper establishment of technology strategy and more effective transfer of technology. The presentation will identify the failure mechanisms of technology transfer and will present a model for improving the success rate, a prerequisite for raising the priority of mineral processing investment. Topics emphasised include strategy formulation, human resources planning, and total quality management principles applied to improving technology transfer.

CORED is a registered trademark of VOEST-ALPINE AG and Korf Engineering GmbH. The COREXW process is based on the idea of separating the process steps realized in the blast furnace (gene- ration of reduction gas, reduction of iron oxide and melting of the reduced iron) and including partial coking of the coal.

Planning has been thorough, and very large capital expenditures have been made by companies to provide high standards of accommodation, services and amenities. But so often the phrase 'company town' comes to be applied, expressing the frustrations of the residents, working for a single employer who dominates their lives, and of the company, which would prefer not to have to build and operate a town. The much-vaunted early success of some iron ore, bauxite and coal projects has led to a belief that the success of all mining projects is assured. This paper examines the importance of processing to the properties and performance of high purity zirconia ceramics. Many of the principles discussed, however, apply to ceramic processing in general. For fabricated ceramic articles to display their wide range of high performance properties, they must be made fully dense. The precursor powder and postpowder processing requirements necessary to achieve full density in the fabricated body are discussed. Brittleness, the anathema of ceramics, can be overcome in zirconia by incorporation of toughening mechanisms. Transformation toughening and microcrack toughening and their origins in partially stabilized zirconia are reviewed.
