This paper describes the operation involved in the sinking of a concrete-lined elliptical-shaped shaft at North Broken Hill Limited.Major factors such as geological features, future ventilation, ore haulage at depth and their relation to the location and selection of the type of shaft are described.Features covered in the sinking of the shaft include equipment details, with special reference to mechanical mucking, operational cycles based on time study analyses for sinking, concreting and the placing of steel sets. Rockbursts, as they occur in South African deep level gold mines, have a lot in common with natural earthquakes. Both violently release seismic energy and cause damage to underground and surface structures. Rockbursts are the main cause of fatalities in deep gold mines and the problem may increase in severity with future mining at greater depths. Although the emphasis in Rock mechanics is on the prevention of rockbursts, prediction would provide a partial solution to the rockburst problem. A research project was initiated in 1981 on Western Deep Levels to investigate the possibility of detecting and identifying precursive microseismic activity. This project has succeeded in locating potential sources of seismic events with reasonable confidence. The timing of these events may be estimated with less confidence, and an important parameter, namely the potential size of the rockburst, still cannot be determined. An example of a large seismic event and its associated precursive activity are discussed. Practical prediction systems will, at least for some time, involve subjective decision making which will place a new responsibility on the mine manager as well as the rockburst specialist. The moral pressure on the manager as the final decision maker will probably be greater than the fear of leqal prosecution.

The cross-sectional method of stope grade estimation at Cobar Mines has consistently had several shoneomings, me most imponant of which being mat stope grade is significantly overestimated in the high grade lenses.The use of mree-dimensional ore lens modelling improved the grade estimation and ore waste definition but significant overestimation still occurred in me high grade stopes, particularly those wim extremely variable grade distribution. The implementation of an indicalor kriging based method for mapping of me high grade copper mineralization has significantly improved the quality of copper grade estimates and provides a mineralisation geometry similar to that generated manually by me mine geologists. This paper presents the results of a test case study in the application of indicator kriging to the mapping of the copper grade in two stopes in the QTS North mineralisation. The results are encouraging in that they prov ide coofi rmation of the geometrical model developed by the geologists and much improved estimates of the grades of me stopes whencompared to me grade reponed from mining these stopes.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

While convergence of plates at a subduction zone produces shortening at the toe of the overriding plate, this deformation is localized to the frontal 100 km or so of the plate. There is increasing evidence that the state of strain in back-arcs, volcanic arcs, and possibly the entire forearc is extensional. The most likely cause of this extension is rollback of the subducting plate and trenchward advance of the overriding plate. Arcs are thermally weakened, and are activated repeatedly through time. The primary expression of the extensional state of strain is spreading of the weak arc material, either by splitting the arc or by back-arc spreading behind it. In the Mount Victor area of the Eastern Highlands Province, re- connaissance geological mapping and new micropalaeontological data have revealed the existence of at least three small thrust- bound windows exposing late Middle to Late Cretaceous (Late Aptian-Early Albian and Late Santonian-Maastrichtian) sedimen- tary rocks and pillow lavas, Latest Paleocene- Earliest Eocene pillow lavas, and Latest Paleocene-Earliest Eocene bathyal micrites. Late Middle Eocene to Late Eocene inner neritic bioclastic micrite units also occurs in thrust contact with Middle Miocene Yaveufa Formation volcanolithic conglomerates. The Cretaceous and Early Tertiary units appear to be thrust-bound and are best exposed in a window just south of Mount Victor, and in two smaller windows to the east. The inner neritic Eocene limestone occurs in a thrust-bound sliver within the Yaveufa For- mation near Obura. The windows occur within extensive out- crop of Early Miocene Omaura Formation and the Yaveufa For- mation. Thin-bedded grey mudstone, siltstone and sandstone, typical of much of the Chim Formation form only a small part of the exposure of Cretaceous rocks. Thick-bedded volcanolithic conglomerate, spilitic pillow basalts, and welded basic tuffs domi- nate the Cretaceous section. The stratigraphy and structure of the Mount Victor area is similar to the Menyamya area, the Aure Scarp, and perhaps the Tapini area. This study has raised the possibility of widespread thrust- ing in the Kainantu area, and suggests that the boundary between the Omaura and Yaveufa Formations is thrusted, at least locally.

Where vertical or near vertical faces are required in open excavations in soils and rocks, some form of stabilization of the 'cut is often necessary. Stressed anchors either alone or in combination with steel, timber or concrete-lagging are often an economical and versatile means of providing support. Stressed anchors are also-a very economical means of anchoring a wide range of structures such as dams, cranes, transmission towers, retaining walls, spillway aprons, bridge piers; and - stacks. The anchors need not be stressed always on installation.other than to proof load them. A number of examples illustrate some of-the more practical aspects of.the design and construction techniques used. No new methods of design or construction are involved, but merely some consolidation of the engineering design, soil and rock mechanics,thinking applied to the stressed anchor tech- nique.

The paper briefly describes the mining system employed on Western Deep Levels for the past 20 years. The negative aspects which gave rise to a new mechanized method of mining are discussed. The sequence of events leading from the Mine's first attempt at trackless mining in 1980 to the present day in-stope project is presented. The original justification for this project and the in-stope trackless mining method is described in detail. The results to date are evaluated and the original rationale for going in-stope trackless mining questioned. A totally new mining philosophy for Western Deep Levels, whereby major geological disturbances are left in situ and longwalls re-established and mined using trackless mining machinery is described. The economics of this mining method are discussed. Trackless mining machinery can also be put to good use within the conventional longwalls in a new method of mining using Load Haul Dumpers (LHD) in reef drives. When the instope trackless mining project commenced in 1983, it was stated that expansion to any significant degree with diesel powered vehicles could be ruled out and electrically driven alternatives would have to be developed. This issue is discussed and the Mine's decision to expand with diesel powered vehicles explained. Finally, the extent to which trackless mining is likely to be seen in the 1990 s at Western Deep Levels is discussed.

The Wisemans Creek derelict mine site is located in native forest approximately 150 km west of Sydney. Mean annual rainfall at Bathurst, 20 km to the north, is 634 mm and reasonably distributed throughout the year, with slightly more rain falling in the summer months. Evaporation is 1350 mm per annum and considerably exceeds rainfall in all but the winter months (May to August). This results in a water deficit for much of the year. Groundwater is relatively deep, as it has not been intercepted in the shallow open cut workings. Investigation of the groundwater regime was beyond the scope of the current study. Mining has taken place on the site for almost 100 years, during which copper, talc and gold have been sequentially extracted from surface and shallow underground workings. The site is now characterised by the presence of small open pits, unprotected shafts and adits, mullock heaps and an unconfined tailing deposit from a small cyanidation plant. From a distance, the mine area is visible because of two distinct steep bare slopes below the relatively small mine workings and mullock heaps. The mining area was characterised in terms of its environmental, safety and heritage issues. Mullock from the early copper mining was found to be acid forming and leachate from this, combined with clearing of timber, has most likely resulted in death of vegetation below the heaps. The mullock also contains elevated concentrations of heavy metals. The gold tailing is apparently benign and not acid forming, although there are indications of oxidation and acid formation in the derelict gold open cut. Oxidation of the acid forming mullock still appears to be taking place even after being exposed to the atmosphere for at least 50 years, resulting in continued contamination of the slopes below the heaps with heavy metals. The concentrations of metals decreases with distance below the mullock heaps and also is confined to the ground surface the further away from the mullock, providing further evidence to support the theory that the mullock is the source of contamination. Despite this continuing contamination, its spread beyond the immediate mining area appears to have been limited because of the relatively dry climate, with only intermittent rainfall and stream flows. Irregular storm flows in the nearby creek could also have washed any contaminated soil some distance from the site and beyond the area investigated in this study. Remediation of the site and restoration of vegetation on the bare slopes will therefore depend on elimination of the source of acid and metals. Options for remediation, focussing on minimising cost by retaining the materials on or close to the site, are identified. The volume of the open cuts would appear to be close to that required for burial of the acid-forming mullock, thereby removing the source of surface contamination while keeping it above the groundwater table. However, implementation of this remediation plan will depend on the availability of funds to undertake the work through the New South Wales GovernmentÆs Derelict Mines Program.

Four historical periods of Australian lead-zinc-silver exploration and development are identified.In the first period, 1841-1900, Australia's deeply weathered surface yielded bonanza deposits. The outcrops of easily worked secondary ores, enriched in silver and lead, were discovered by prospectors with the incentive of production at times of high silver price. Districts discovered in this period still contributed, in 1982, 60 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production, mainly from Broken Hill.The second period 1901-1944, was one of strong mine development but stagnant lead-zinc-silver exploration. Mount Isa was discovered and developed, but otherwise effort was devoted mainly to the mining of deposit extensions and to the metallurgical flotation of zinc. The deposit discovery rate was low but the discovery of Mount Isa was so significant that discoveries of this period contributed, in 1982, 30 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production.The third period 1945-1972 was one of re-invigorated exploration.New geological and geophysical surveys, developing concepts of ore genesis, and worldwide comparisons of orebody settings improved target area selection. Evolving remote sensing methods, and rapid analytical techniques, assisted detection of lead-zinc deposits. Initiation of exploration led to discovery:1. in regions of previously unsuspected lead-zinc-silver potential (Sorby Hills, Mons Cupri, Golden Grove).2. of poorly exposed deposits in recognized mineral districts (Hilton, H.Y.C., Woodlawn, Elura, Que River).3. during active exploration for another commodity (Brown's, Woodcutters, Mary River, Beltana, Lady Loretla and Pegmont).The period saw a sustained growth in lead-zinc-silver production mainly from established operations. Mines discovered during the third period contributed, in 1982, 7 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production.In the fourth period from 1973 to the present, exploration initiatives became fewer but resulted in continued discovery of poorly exposed deposits at Teutonic Bore, Thalanga, Benambra, Scuddles, Hellyer, and Jillawarra. Development initiatives strengthened in the period and production commenced at Woodlawn, Teutonic Bore, Que River and Elura; pre-feasibility work commenced at Scuddles, Hilton, Lady Loretta and Thalanga.

The evolution of economic precious metal and copper-gold deposits in high-level igneous terranes is dependent on very efficient fluid focussing. This is most readily achieved by contemporaneous deformation, igneous intrusion and hydrothermal activity. Mineralisation in these environments generally occurs in fault and fault-vein arrays developed in the cover sedimentary and volcanics sequences above older regional scale fault systems. Such reactivated fault systems are particularly prone to developing tile complex fracture arrays, extreme local dilation and dramatic increases in permeability that are necessary to efficiently focus hydrothermal fluid and produce large mineral deposits. The arc systems of tilePacific rim are typically structurally and tectonically complex. At any given period in the evolution of an arc system, it may be dominated by extensional, compressional or strike-slip deformation. Indeed, it is common for the tectonic environment to change repeatedly through the development of a single arc segment. As a result, structures formed in one tectonic environment are commonly complexly reactivated in quite different environments later in arc evolution. These complexly reactivated structures have greater potential to localise extreme fracturing, dilation and fluid flux than primary structures. Application of this knowledge to practical exploration requires an understanding of the primary geometry of the controlling fault systems, the fault movements during reactivation, intrusion and mineralisation, and the consequent location and geometry of dilational sites. Simple 2D lineament analysis and targeting on lineament intersections does not suffice. Chemical processes that results from structurally focussed fluid flow may also contribute to permeability enhancement and further enhance fluid flux. Two main types of chemical feedback are important. The first involves selective dissolution of minerals during alteration and tile consequent production of increased porosity and permeability. The second occurs where alteration changes the mechanical properties of tile rock mass, especially where it leads to a greater propensity for fracture (eg by silification). In near-surface environments (< ~1 km), geomorphic processes complement fault systems in focussing fluid flow to develop sub-horizontal bodies of mineralisation, such as the giant Ladolam gold deposit (>42 million ounces of gold).   Along with classification schemes which stress crustal level, host rocks and alteration assemblages, the styles of high level 'epithermal' and reated deposits must also be considered in respect of their controlling co-active fault structures. Such structural understanding, combined with understanding of tile chemical processes involved (eg host rock reactivity), provides a major tool for exploration particularly in terrains obscured by deep weathering. Geological interpretation based on integration of field mapping with magnetic, radiometric and other remotely sensed imagery provides a powerful complementary tool to the traditional geochemical and geophysical targeting techniques. Timely and effective geological input is capable of reducing exploration risk and providing a more cost-effective basis for drilling and development. Examples of deposits associated with fault reactivation in extensional, compressional and strike-slip settings within arc systems are discussed in this context.

From a study of coke samples obtained from the tuyere level of four Australian Blast Furnaces, the nature of in-furnace coke degradation has been investigated. At the periphery of the raceway is a concentration of fines and the lump coke appears dull and rounded. However coke from the deadman is angular and relatively undegraded. Cokes made from higher rank coal appear to suffer preferential attack of the reactive maceral derived component (binder). The coke from lower rank coal appears to be attacked non-preferentially by the solution-loss reaction. Initial attempts to simulate these phenomena have given results consistent with these findings. From chemical analysis of the tuyere probe samples there appears to be a relative increase in carbon and decrease in-.sulphur and phosphorous between stockline and tuyere level. An overall decrease in coke mineral matter derived material was noted and associated with this was a significant gasification of silicon. Consequent formation of silicon carbide was noted.

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This paper presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rock-breaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days, during which there have been no reported collisions and 100 per cent adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the site’s overall throughput.CITATION:Boeing, A and Douglas, E, 2014. The increasing problems associated with the disposal of waste and the potential for use of by-products as underground filling material is a subject which is relevant not only to the coal-mining industry. The progressive scarcity of surface disposal facilities for by-products and waste has now become a problem in all sectors - not only for the mining industry. The considerable capacity offered by underground cavities which exists in various mining branches present an extremely promising potential in this context. The backfill process for coal mining developed by DMT in co-operation with Ruhrkohle AG make use of the cavities which are offered by the extraction of coal. It consists of several stages: The fine-grained by-products, such as sludge, filter cakes, fine refuse, ash and flue-gas cleaning residues are processed on the basis of specified formulations in metering, blending and pump facilities on the surface to produce pumpable pastes with precisely defined flow characteristics. On Walsum Colliery of Ruhrkohle AG up to 200 m3/h stowing paste is conveyed into the mine in pipes with diameter of 200 mm (8"). The delivery pressure of the pump operating on surface in conjunction with the hydrostatic pressure of the shaft pipe - amounting in total to as much as 25 MPa - makes it possible to convey the stowing material for a distance 12000 m underground up to the workings without any need for additional booster pumps. Via a pipe installed in the face, the paste is pressurised into the cavities in the specially fragmented rock in the mined-out zone well behind the support. Consistent use of stowage of caved-in goafs makes it possible to reduce surface settlement above the workings. Fires in the stowed rock are either smothered or completely prevented thanks to the exceptional air-tightness in the caved goaf and the cooling effects of the slurry stowage. The reduced danger of fire, the preventation of air-leakage and the positive effects on gas emission from the coal improve safety in the workings.

Statistics show that despite a low lost-time accident rate there is a high fatality rate from falls of ground in pillar extraction work. Investigation of accidents indicates that in many cases the planned ex- traction cycle has been ignored. Better training, supervision, and personnel protection and where possible changed systems are suggested as a means of improving safety and achieving better Results.

The need for ventilation around mine workings derives from the various gases found in mine atmospheres and CH4, the principal diluent is in quantity depending upon several factors. Several of these are seam thickness, depth of cover and working method and the French Regulations typify controls on coal mine ventilation. There are many factors affecting production of CH4, in addition to coal production, such as the geological setting of the working seam, the geometry of workings and the rates of advance. The possibilities of spontaneous combustion should not be overlooked. The complexity of high production modern colliery layouts is such that sometimes there maybe 200 airway branches. There are specific differences in ventilation networks between the mining methods of rooms and pillars, shortwalls and longwalls as affecting resistance losses, as well as necessary airflows and ventilating

The Wangaloa coal mine closed in 1989, and an attempt to grow Pinus radiata on quartz-rich overburden dumps was not successful. The site is currently being rehabilitated with re-profiling and native plant establishment. Plants are being established in a range of substrates that consist of variably disaggregated Tertiary coal measure sediments derived from the mine sequence. This material has low organic matter content (typically <10 %), originating from coal fines or carbonaceous sediment. Substrate samples were collected during December 2003 from a range of sites varying in age, slope, and parent material. Nutrient analysis includes nitrate, ammonia, total N, total P, available P and readily exchangeable base cations. Total nitrogen and phosphorus are low on areas of recently disturbed, quartz-rich overburden, with total N =1200 mg/kg, and total P =200 mg/kg. Background forested areas have total N ranging between 2800 - 3300 mg/kg and total P of 420 - 500 mg/kg. Quartz-rich overburden sites contain available nitrogen levels of less than 6 mg/kg, while background forested areas are generally >20 mg/kg. The soils and water runoff are generally acid, with pH down to three. Water samples have been collected from both ground and surface resources on a monthly basis since December 2003. The main lake on the site had pH of 4.6 in 1999, and this remained relatively unchanged when 850 tonnes of lime were added in 2002. However, the lake pH changed to 6.4 within a one month period in 2004, and has fluctuated since that time.

The Copper Canyon deposits, occur in proximity to the regionally distinctive formational boundary between the Staveley Formation and Marimo Shale. The mineralisation here is associated with breccias, veins, and alteration zones near the base of the Marimo Shale unit and in the underlying evaporitic dolomite-dololutite dominant Staveley Formation. The Marimo Shale unit, in its basal 60 metres, is highly carbonaceous and hosts ubiquitous but minor diagenetic (?) copper-pyrite, and on occasion, extensive albite-microcline alteration centres, pyritic (cobaltiferous)-quartz veins, and microcline-quartz_+plagioclase veins or veinlet arrays. The most significant mineralisation, such as at the Greenrnount prospect, consists of a shallowly dipping package of alteration zones overprinted by multiple generations of pink-orange microcline-quartz-chalcopyrite-pyrite-(arsenopyrite) and albite-calcite- phlogopite veins. Accessory mineralogies in most of these mineralisation styles consist of tourmaline, monazite, rutile, and apatite. Chalcopyrite (and secondary chalcocite) and gold are associated with each generation of alteration but are best developed in the later stages of veining. In the underlying Staveley Formation, which is a conformable transition between the Corella Formation limestones and the Marimo Shale, chalcopyrite (cobaltiferous)-pyrite mineralisation occurs as disseminations in pre- and syntectonic breccias, and with disaggregated silica pseudomorphs (after thinly bedded evaporitic sulphate beds) and associated dolomitised limestone-calcilutite. Although this mineralisation may be partly diagenetic in origin the 200 in thick evaporitic packages are also host to a locally widespread (2 to 4 km long and 200 to >500 metres wide) and pervasive 'redrock' styled microcline-dolomite¦hematite alteration. Within this gross alteration package there also seems to be a consistent association with narrow (10 to 100 metres wide), linear (stratabound) semi-massive magnetite-hematite-microcline and quartz-chalcedony replacement zones. Like much of the nearby Corella Formation the Staveley Formation, under the Marimo Shale, has undergone dissolution, paleo-solution karsting (breccias) and tectonic brecciation such that the precursor lithological details have been progressively obliterated. The post-diagenetic to post-tectonic fluid pathway development and metasomatic alteration history of this important lithostructural package of rocks has been traced from preliminary studies only. The ability to do so is largely due to the absence of significant regional and contact metamorphic overprinting, and the local preservation of precursor sediment profiles. It is proposed that both the base of the Marimo Shale and parts of the underlying evaporitic-limestone-dololutite have acted as conformable fluid pathways for hydrothermal and (perhaps) diagenetically derived, Cu-Au-(¦Co ¦As) K-Na-Ti-REE bearing, fluids and brines.

Emulsion explosives are a common industrial explosive and have a non-ideal detonation behaviour. The detonation performance for a given product changes with the charge diameter, ground conditions, con?nement and density. The burning process of an emulsion explosive has been modelled with an ignition and growth model in the LS-DYNA code. The parameters in the burning rate function are calibrated by the detonation velocities and the detonation front curvature radii from emulsion explosive tests. A Perl program was developed for an efficient estimation of the parameters, and the results show that the calibrated parameters can predict both detonation velocities and the detonation front curvatures.CITATION:Yi, C, Nyberg, U and Johansson, D, 2015. Very little public domain information is available on the exploration signature of the Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt deposit. From 1987 to 1990 the BMR (now AGSO) carried out geological, geophysical and geochemical (whole-rock, stream, soil and rock chip) surveys within the South Alligator and Kakadu Conservation Zones and defined several key parameters useful for exploration programs. The essential geological ingredients for the style of Coronation Hill Au+Pd+Pt¦U deposit are oxidised, low pH fluids, dilatant fault structures, a thick neutral to oxidised cover sequence and chemical traps in the basement. In geophysical data, the areas surrounding the mineralisation can be detected by airborne magnetics as major lows in magnetite-rich rocks, whereas in airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data, imaged spectrometric channel ratios such as U2/I'h and U2/K highlighted alteration surrounding the deposits. Three types of stream-sediment and soil samples were taken from each site: (1) -1 mm mesh, 5 kg sample for bulk cyanide leach (BCL) analysis for Au, Pd, and Pt; (2) 1 kg sample of -1 mm mesh sediment for fire assay/ICPMS analysis for Au, Pt and Pd; and (3) 50 g - 180¦ mesh sample for a variety of trace element analyses, including Au, Pd and Pt. Techniques 2 and 3 gave similar results for Au, Pt and Pd, while the recovery rates for Pd and Pt from the BCL samples were considerably lower. Other trace elements did not define unique indicators for Pt or Pd mineralisation, as each sample reflected the dominant lithology in the drainage basin. Rock chip surveys were useful in determining which faults were associated with the ore fluid in regions of multiple fracturing. Results from these exploration-style surveys also confirmed that the Coronation Hill deposit is a variant of the unconformity-style of mineralisation, as all significant geochemical and/or geophysical results occur at or below the unconformity.
