A significant part of the reserves of the Southern Coalfield lie beneath major water storages and their impounding dam structures. One of the functions of the NSW Government's Dams Safety Committee is to specify the particular mine layouts which can be used beneath the stored waters according to certain guidelines. A study was made of examples of the two different methods of extraction used under the stored waters as proposed by the mining company according to the guidelines and approved by the Dams Safety Committee. Using both pillar monitoring and mathematical modelling approaches it was shown that the recovery of coal from these layouts could be improved while still ensuring the long term stability of both the underground support pillars and the body of the strata. The integrity of the water storages and their impounding structures would therefore not be Affected.

Since its commercial in Australia at Broken Hill in the early part of the 20th century, the flotation process has grown to become the single most important minerals separation method available to mineral processing engineers. Statistics on flotation are impressive both in terms of growth of tonnages treated and in terms of the variety of separations accomplished. Because of the steady decline in the grade of ores and because many of the ores remaining are finely disseminated mixtures of minerals (many of them in a highly oxidized state) mineral processing scientists and engineers are now con- fronted with the problem of improving and modifying conventional flotation techniques so as to be able to effic- iently process these more refractory types of-ores. The flotation process did not come into being as the result of an intensive fundamental research effort but, in a similar way to so many other methods used in the processing of raw materials, it was developed over the years by the continued application of empirical methods. As a result, most of the basic research in this field has long been concerned with the problem of explaining why the existing process works so well. We are now at the stage where any further substan- tial extension of the flotation process will demand a more profound understanding of its fundamental principles. Stress measurement is at the core of most stability design analyses. It is demonstrated that contrary to accepted practice, it is the field measurement, and not the calculated prediction, of stress that requires most examination and review. Since it is not really possible to quantify rockmass properties, the stiffness values used in reduction of stress measurements and in subsequent design analyses (either empirical or numerical modelling) must consider an appropriate range of values.

Shay Gap was created for the sincrular purpose of housing, in comfort, the workforce that would be required to mine iron ore, from leases held by Goldsworthy Mining Limited, in hill country, approximately 170 kilometres east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. To combat the and environment, the Company ultimately decided to adopt a novel planning concept for the town, which had not been attempted before in Western Australia. The special problems encountered during planning, and the reservations that were expressed during construction and early settle ment, are now part of the dim past. During the three years of occupation now achieved, there has been accumulated a story of success in the provision of an acceptable alternative to modern suburbia. Not only may this be claimed, but it can also be argued that the Shay Gap concept has been a more successful solution to a real environmental problem in our arid Pilbara region than has been seen in other similar settlements.

The design and operating characteristics of the hydraulic cyclone elutriator were described in detail by Kelsall and McAdam (1963), and the method of operation of the commercially available version, the Cyclosizer, is described in the manufacturer's pamphlet (Anon). Complete details of the operating procedure are given in the relevant operating manual (Anon, 1964).The cyclones which form the basis of the Cyclosizer (Fig. 1) under normal operating conditions produce typical cut sizes of 44, 33, 23, 15, and 10 µm for cyclones one to five respectively for material with a specific gravity of 2·7. At the end of the selected elutriation period each sized fraction is discharged and collected for subsequent assay or analysis but all material rejected by the fifth cyclone (e.g. minus 10 \lm quartz) normally passes to waste. When this material is needed for separate study, although its amount and average analyses can be calculated by difference, it may be necessary to collect more than 250 I. of very dilute suspension, flocculate the solids, allow to settle, and decant off the supernatant liquid.This procedure is cumbersome and inconvenient and the simple technique to be described may offer some advantages. The Barra Mine was the most significant mine of Australia's earliest mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851, the decade prior to discovery of gold in eastern Australia. Between 1845 and 1860, Barra was the largest metalliferous mine in Australia and employed up to 1000 men and boys, most of them Cornish.""Today the site is also important in a physical and archaeological sense as it contains extensive remains of mining and processing operations of the period 1850 - 70. Most significant are three cnginchouses which housed Cornish beam engines.

The performance of in situ, shallow water covers in controlling acid generation was evaluated at four recently decommissioned pyritic uranium tailings sites at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings are acid generating, having a pyrite content of approximately five to ten per cent and a very low to non-existent alkaline buffering capacity. Adverse market conditions led to the closure of all operating uranium mines in the early- to mid-1990s, followed by rehabilitation and decommissioning of mine and waste management facilities. In order to control acidic drainage, all new and active tailings areas at Denison, Quirke, Panel, Spanish-American and Stanleigh mine sites were re-engineered to provide in situ submersion of these tailings under shallow water covers. The tailings impoundment dams were upgraded and reinforced or in some cases reconstructed, to minimise seepages and provide a minimum 1 m depth of water cover. With the exception of Stanleigh mine, which was closed in 1996 and rehabilitated during the late-1990s, the water covered Tailings Management Areas (TMAs) at other sites have been in operation for a period of six to nine years. The surface water quality at these sites is maintained at near neutral pH conditions by periodic addition of lime slurry to the established water covers. Additional treatment of effluent is provided as required to meet the discharge water quality standards. The performance of the established water covers at the sites was evaluated by analysing the annual equivalent limestone consumption data. The results were compared with the performance of an older, decommissioned Nordic TMA, which was rehabilitated using revegetation techniques. The water covers at these sites are performing as designed and acid generation has been reduced to low levels. Based on the total amount of yearly equivalent limestone required to maintain water quality in the water cover and at the effluent treatment plant, it is concluded that acid generation rate at the Denison TMA has reduced to less than 0.15 per cent of its pre-water cover conditions during normal operation and rehabilitation periods. In comparison to the revegetated Nordic TMA, the acid generation rates at Denison and Panel TMAs have decreased to less than 1.6 per cent of that at the Nordic TMA. The acid generation rate at the Quirke TMA was comparable or only slightly lower than that at the Nordic TMA because of its unique terraced cell configuration, having tailings in five hydraulically interconnected cells at different elevations. Historic acidity and oxidation reaction products, accumulated during normal operating and pre-water cover periods, are flushing from upstream locations to downstream cells, thus requiring much higher equivalent limestone additions for acid neutralisation and effluent treatment.

The Lihir deposit in Papua New Guinea (PNG) contains an estimated mineable reserve of 454t (14.6M oz) of gold in refractory sulphide ore. The Lihir Joint Venture has submitted a proposal to the PNG Government to develop an open pit mine and to install a process plant and associated infrastructure facilities on Lihir Island. The proposed process plant will employ whole-ore pressure oxidation technology, has a design capacity of 2.825Mt/a of ore containing 7.20 sulphide sulphur, and is expected to average 19.3t/a (620,000 oz/a) in gold production during its first 12 years of operation.An extensive program of process development testwork and feasibility engineering was completed to establish the process plant design for the Lihir Project. Summary results of this test-work as well as key design criteria, the process flowsheet, and major equipment selected for the commercial plant are presented and discussed.

A sample of fifty fractured low chromium-molybdenum alloy drill steel rods was investigated. Each rod was of the forged collar integral tungsten carbide type in common use in Australia.Examination of a new rod of the same type showed that a zone of spheroidized carbide about 0·25 in. wide was present about 12 in. from the shank end.Examination of the fractured rods revealed that 78 per cent. of failures occurred within 0·25 in. of the spheroidized zone at the shank end but in the main stem of the rod rather than actually in this softened zone where it might be expected to occur.This predominant type of failure at the shank end in the steel rods is caused by a highly anodic region corresponding to the first stages of spheroidization of carbides present in the steel. Accelerated corrosion in the narrow band havil\g this structure induces the formation of stress-concentrating corrosion pits, 78 per cent. of failures in this region being due to corrosion fatigue.The remaining 22 per cent. of failures, occurring in the as-rolled stem, were due to either corrosion fatiglie if failure were initiated at the water-hole surface of the drill rod, or to a decarburized outer surface if failure originated at this surface.Temperatures producing spheroidization were determined as 6007600C.Evidence suggests that approximately 75 per cent, of shank-end failures in all forged collar drill rods can be attributed to corrosion fatigue occurring preferentially in that section showing partial spheroidization of carbides· produced by the forging and hardeningoperations.Methods are suggested for reducing the frequency of fatigue failures in drill rods.INTRODUCTIONAn integral part of all tunnelling operations through rock is the drilling of suitably placed holes i:n.to which explosive is subsequently rammed and exploded.The drilling operation, whether for metalliferous mining or for general civil engineering constructional work; is...

Scaling in Bayer Refineries is a natural consequence of the super-saturated liquors used in the process. The caustic liquor is supersaturated not only with alumina but also silica and calcia at various stages of the process. The basic scaling mechanisms are reviewed and examples of the two basic types, growth and settled scales, are given. Examples include gibbsite scales formed in the precipitators and silica scales formed in heat exchangers. The main factors affecting the rate of growth of growth scales are temperature and supersaturation and are highlighted using a silica scale example. For growth scales chemical cleaning rates can readily be predicted from kinetics and an example for a gibbsite scale is given. For settled scales the growth rate cannot be predicted and the hydrodynamics within the system have most effect. There is no simple method to predict the potential for chemical cleaning of settled scales; some of the relevant issues are discussed, in particular methods to identify the cementing phase in the scale. Following a detailed assessment of concen trator performance at Broken Hill South Limited which was reported in a previous paper, the fine grinding section was changed from a parallel arrangement of the two grinding circuits to a series arrangement, and the concentrator per- formance re-assessed. The change to series grinding had virtually no effect on the actual or potential capacity of the circuit to make a final product with 80% passing 100 mesh. However, the fresh flotation feed contained significantly less +150 mesh lead and +65 mesh zinc (material which was shown to float poorly), without an increase in the quantity of poor-floating ultra-fine lead and zinc. From the size-by-size flotation recovery data, it was shown that overall recoveries of both lead and zinc were approximately 1% higher than they would have been without this change in size distribution and it was concluded that this was a direct result of the change in grind- ing procedure.

It is hypothesised that increasing the number of loading passes will produce a reduced range of truck payload outcomes compared with four-pass loading. The paper provides analysis to support this hypothesis. It is shown that, hypothetically, loading trucks with five or more passes will result in reduced tendency for overloading and reduced confidence interval for truck payloads that increase the confidence level of containing high end payloads within safe and commercially acceptable limits. Furthermore, increased number of passes provides for more precise bucket load spotting and so improves distribution of payloads within truck bodies. Truck-loading issues examined by the paper include: Improvement in life of driveline components and tyres. Generally tyre costs are relatively moderate; but tyres tend to become an increasingly sensitive performance/cost component as truck scale increases; Reduction of site severity fects flowing on to suspensions, truck frames and structural components generally with potential for reduced long-term repair costs; Less physical body damage due to smaller load increments; Reduced risk of non-compliance with payload limitations for safe braking standards; Increase in loading cycle times tend to increase with scale of loading machinery within the limits of a specific type of equipment (ie rope shovels or hydraulic shovels). Production increase with increased bucket capacity is, to a degree, offset by slower loading cycle times. This is particularly pronounced with front-end loaders but tends to be less noticeable with hydraulic excavators/shovels and electric rope shovels. Decrease in loading time, as a proportion of total truck-cycle time as open pits deepen and dump reaches increase. The production and cost benefits of four-pass loading tend to diminish as truck cycle times increase. The paper also discusses the implications for loading-equipment philosophy to satisfy the future needs of the industry. Cost benefits from upscaling tend to diminish as truck scale increases, so increasing management diligence and close monitoring are required to ensure that expected outcomes are realised. These truck-loading issues have been researched to assess the benefits positive or negative) of four-pass loading in practical scenarios. Diamond bearing deposits are extremely low grade and require large bulk samples to be tested to determine the grade and quality of the stones. The semi portable plants, for treatment of these bulk samples, have followed the development of commercial processes for diamond concentration. These processes included jigs and diamond pans, which have been largely supplanted by heavy media processes for primary concentration, due to the higher efficiencies in all size ranges. A number'of flowsheets including these processes are presented. The final recovery of diamonds from the bulk sample concentrates can be accomplished by rejigging, adherance to grease or by X-ray sorting. Flowsheets incorporating all the processes are presented. Two plants are described; one incorporating jigging, rejigging and hand sorting; the other using heavy media separation, and wet X-ray sorting.

In the iron and steelmaking processes, dusts are generated and treated by wet dedust- ing methods to form slurries which are high in iron content, but also contain certain impuri- ties. For many years these slurries have been processed and the wet cake, which is produced, has been dumped because of the high zinc and alkali chloride contents. Sintering is an appropriate process for recycling of these materials, provided the deleterious impurities can be kept under control. Zinc is a deleterious element in blast furnaces because it promotes the formation of accretions on the upper walls of the furnace. This results in irregular furnace performance. Alkali chlorides effect the emissions from the sinter plant waste gas due to the high resis- tivity of these components, resulting in decreased efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator. Experimental work indicated a concentra- tion of zinc in the -11 pmt particle size frac- tion. A cyclone plant was installed producing a "coarse" usable product and a "fine" waste Product.

Hazard analysis utilizes interaction mecha- nisms in combination with geologic, structural and mining conditions to delineate areas of potential damage in seams subject to interaction. Using characterizations of conditions peculiar to multi- seam mining, such as innerburden thickness, geol- ogy and structures, initial interaction contour maps can be constructed. Geologic hazard analysis is then carried out on roof, pillar and floor condi- tions in the affected seam using lower seam rock properties and layout geometries in the overlying seam. Either safety factors or damage ratings can then be developed representing degree of hazard in the lower seam. The final hazard map shows both the aerial extent and magnitude of potential dam- age from interaction.

A vehicle proximity warning system is being developed using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two an a half years of research, software development, and laboratory testing, field tests were carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate GPS accuracy and overall system effectiveness under rugged operating conditions. This article describes the progress made on this NIOSH funded project and discusses the GPS accuracy tests and overall system tests that were carried out during 2001 at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona.

An experimental investigation of the hydraulic cuttability of coal from the Theiss Dampier Mitsui mine near Moura, Central Queen land illustrated the ability of established cutting equations to describe the behaviour of the coal during cutting. The experimental equipment developed for the work proved reliable. The results of the experimental programme are consistent with accumulated experience from overseas.

The recommended maximum explosive weight for boulder blasting using internal charges is 0.15 kg/m 3 (Olofsson, 1988). Normally this charge results in excessive scattering and flyrock, creating increased liability for the operator, especially in congested areas. An alternative technique using smaller explosive charges is being developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). It is designed to reduce boulder scatter, flyrock and fumes and allows shooting in close proximity, using common blasting products. The method comprises drilling a hole into the top of the boulder, inserting a small primer, filling the hole with water and shooting it. The hole is drilled approximately two thirds into the boulder and the charge (10 g/m 3 ) is placed half way into the hole filled with water. Upon initiation the primer produces a small volume of gas at extremely high pressure which acts upon the surrounding (relatively incompressible) water. The water transmits this pressure to the surrounding blasthole, hydraulically fracturing the rock. As the fractures propagate and the boulder expands a rapid increase in the blasthole volume occurs. Because of the small charge the gas pressure quickly dissipates reducing rock movement, resulting in a fractured boulder with minimal material leaving the immediate vicinity. The current work includes both laboratory and field testing programs. The laboratory program is focussed on determining optimum parameters at reduced scale using concrete cubes. The field program focuses on determining a minimum powder factor and includes shooting smaller boulders up to 1 m 3 underground and 1.5 to 5 m 3 boulders in a surface quarry. In both cases the boulders were obtained as oversize from regular production blasts.

City Resources Limited selected Vanuatu as a target area for epithermal gold mineralization because of its relatively unexplored character and its location on the southwest Pacific rim. During 1985 a systematic program of reconnaissance prospecting was completed on six islands within the Vanuatu group, using a helicopter and a specially designed exploration support vessel with on-board assay laboratory. Within a period of 4 months, reconnaissance prospecting of all six islands was completed, two previously unknown epithermal gold provinces had been discovered, and six major prospects warranting detailed exploration had been identified. Factors which contributed to the success of the program include (i) a flexible management approach, (ii) the mobility and access provided by the support vessel/helicopter combination, (iii) rapid assay turn-around, and (iv) adherence to basic prospecting techniques. The relative merits of various sampling media are discussed.
