THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. The larger stopes are divided into arbitrary sections in which ore-breaking and mullocking are carried out in rotation, so that the whole of the excavation is seldom open for measuring at anyone particular time. The hydraulic backfilling of mine tailings has proven very successful at the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota. It allows greater versatility, selectivity and safety in mining. It has also minimized surface subsidence and underground rock movement. The tight filling also eliminates underground fires. This paper explains the hydraulic backfill method used and the problems encountered by so doing.

The porphyry copper minerals of Melanesia occur within a host of narrow veinlets in predominantly quartz diorite stocks or as contact metasomatic masses in skarns adjacent to the intrusion. Some 90 per cent of the constituent minerals comprise pyrite or marcasite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite with the remainder mainly bornite and hematite with accessory rutile and chalcocite together with several trace minerals. Gold is found mainly as inclusions in chalcopyrite, and minor molybdenite occurs likewise.Of particular significance is the persistent occurrence of accessory rutile of hydrothermal origin intimately intergrown with chalcopyrite. The rutile occurs relatively late in the hydrothermal sequence and upon weathering of the deposit may be released on a cumulative basis possibly in sufficient amounts to constitute a particulate pathfinder mineral which may aid in prospecting.Rutile is present in all the Melanesian occurrences studied and is also prominent in several American deposits.The porphyry copper mineralogy is characterized by the presence of accessory hydrothermal rutile intergrown with chalcopyrite.

This paper outlines mining practice in the South Alligator valley between 1954 and 1964. The valley is situated in the Northern Territory 130 miles south east of Darwin and trends north west. The centrally located El Sherana camp is 219 miles by road from Darwin via Pine Creek on the Stuart Highway. 64 miles of gravelled road with low level bridges and culverts which were completed in 1959, connect Pine Creek with El Sherana. This road is often impassable during severe wet season conditions. Earliest recorded production was during the years 1956-57 from the El Sherana and Palette miles, by shallow open cut and cut and fill stoping from small shafts. 4600 tons of high grade ore was processed by hand sorting of massive pitchblende followed by gravity concentra- tion. At the same time 627 tons of ore was won from a small open cut at Sliesbeck 35 miles SE of El Sherana. The second and most important phase of production was to fill two small contracts with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (U.K.A.E.A.) totalling 700 tons of U 08. About 144,000 tons of ore was mined from widely separated smal' orebodies and mining practice varied from small open cuts to gloryholes, open stoping and cut and fill stoping. In some orebodies a combination of several methods was employed to complete production. Final deliveries were made to the U.K.A.E.A. In 1964.

Serious exploration for carbonate-hosted lead/zinc deposits in the Pillara district commenced in 1971 when Trend Exploration acquired exploration tenements covering stream sediment anomalies in the Limestone Billy Hills area. Shell Minerals managed the project from 1974 to 1976, and BHP Minerals Limited assumed management during 1976. Carbonate-hosted 'Mississippi-Valley- type' Pb-Zn deposits most commonly occur in Palaeozoic shallow marine carbonate complexes. At Pillara upper Devonian (Givetian/Frasnian) reef complexes are preserved on the flanks of Precambrian basement 'highs'. Within platform and atoll facies limestones sphalerite-galena- marcasite-calcite mineralisation occurs as disseminations, veins and breccia matrix, mostly associated with fractures and fault zones. Early exploration concentrated on detailed surface geochemistry and IP geophysical surveys, with geological mapping and shallow target percussion and diamond drilling. Results were discouraging and did not indicate potential for a shallow base metal resource. During 1976-77 BHP adopted a grid diamond drilling exploration technique and commenced testing an area of approximately 50 sq. km, initially using an 800 m square grid. In 1978 high grade mineralisation was intersected in an area subsequently named Blendevale. This was in the seventh diamond drill hole in the 800 m grid drilling programme, and to date more than 400 holes have been cored in the Pillara area. Detailed drilling at Blendevale has defined a number of mineralised breccia zones within an area of 2.4 km x 0.5 km, at depths of 100 m to 600 m below surface. The breccia bodies are associated with a series of north-south trending normal fault zones, forming a graben structure. The Concentrator 1 plant at Cadia transitioned from Cadia Hill open pit to the Cadia East block cave ore body in 2013. As a result of this change, major plant upgrades were required to achieve the desired throughput while treating more competent ore. The 40-foot (40’) SAG mill now receives a feed of predominantly high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) product with a minor component of secondary crushed ore at a combined F80 of 17 mm. The significant reduction in feed size to the SAG mill has markedly changed the operating characteristics of the mill, which has been extensively studied since commissioning in 1998.This paper examines the operation of the 40’ SAG mill in its new configuration in the Concentrator 1 circuit. Operational stability is highlighted as a significant factor in delivering mill performance, which has been achieved through several key improvement projects utilising a theory of constraints framework. Five years of successful project implementation has progressively lifted the maximum processing rate of Concentrator 1 from the design estimate of 2455 t/h to above 3000 t/h. The Olympic Dam deposit is truly a world-class IOCG-Ag deposit, the world’s fourth largest deposit of copper and the world’s largest known single uranium deposit. Traditional and non-traditional methods have been used to accurately model the geology and mineralisation of the Olympic Dam deposit. Conditional simulation models have long been used as the most robust method for estimating risk and uncertainty in mine planning decisions at other mines around Australia and the world. There are many challenges associated with simulating the Olympic Dam deposit at a selective mining unit size sufficient for underground mine planning purposes. These include the size of the deposit, resulting in hundreds of millions of grid blocks; the disseminated nature of the zoned sulfide mineralisation. And lastly the direct relationship of the relative abundances of the sulfide mineral species that are crucial to the Olympic Dam smelter performance. Several geostatistical techniques have been utilised in the workflow for the Olympic Dam Conditional Simulation model to address these challenges. The key techniques are: • Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform to de-correlate the main elements before simulation. • Pluri-Gaussian implicit boundary simulation method to simulate the mineralisation domains. • Spectral simulation method of de-trended and de-correlated attributes with account of local varying variance. The resulting conditional simulation models have been validated against histograms, grade-tonnage curves, cross-plots and assessed for variogram reproduction. This paper presents how the final conditional simulation models compare to benchmarking models created using alternate estimation techniques of ordinary kriging and local uniform conditioning. It also presents a validation process using historical samples to test final estimate accuracy of the simulation models.

The Rio Tinto Iron Ore group currently estimates grade attributes for mineral resources using ordinary kriging (OK). OK produces a smoothed globally unbiased estimate, but does not capture local variability, which can have significant impact on mine planning and scheduling. The dimensions and the multivariate nature of iron ore deposits make point simulations of whole deposits impractical. With a direct block simulation method the size and speed limitations of point simulations can potentially be overcome, resulting in a viable method for capturing local variability and for providing risk measures into the mine plan and schedules. Some iron ore deposits are highly folded (post mineralisation) and require preprocessing using an unfolding algorithm to properly define the continuity parameters and directions of anisotropy before simulation can proceed. Block co-simulation proceeds in unfolded space and since mine planning require a block-model with regular block-sizes; a regular block-model is unfolded first. This paper discusses a block co-simulation approach that can be used to simulate the irregular blocks resulting from the unfolding process. A section of an iron ore deposit is used for testing the block co-simulation algorithm and the simulation results are compared against the Isatis direct block simulation method. Available blasthole data is also used to validate the behaviour of the block co-simulation algorithm.

The cost of power is an important matter to mining companies generally and this thought that the members of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, as well as the engineering and mining professions generally would be interested in any proposal for the reduction of that cost-has led to the presentation of this paper.The writer trusts that the description will be found clear and increase the interest in this exceedingly interesting subject. In the working up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of hisfriend Mr. F. J. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer isbetter than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant.Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of regulating factors before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.

A paper identifying anticipated challenges in the extraction of the N3500 Orebody at Glencore Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations was written in 2007. The paper identified the depth of the deposit, the anticipated high stresses, talc alteration and issues with ground support as factors that may affect production. A number of strategies were planned to cope with these issues. After six years of extraction those strategies are evaluated and additional measures taken are outlined. Magnetite mineralisation within the South Middleback Range has been known since the early 1930s; however, it was not until 1989 that BHP (then owners of the Middleback Ranges mining leases) drilled 10 700 m of diamond core into what was then known as the Iron Duchess low-grade deposit. In 2002 a review of Iron Resources left in the Middleback Ranges and the identification of downstream processing benefits using magnetite as a primary feed source led to the commencement of an 18 000 m resource drilling program of the high-grade core of the Iron Duchess low-grade orebody (renamed the Iron Magnet deposit). This paper describes the geology, processes and procedures used since drilling recommenced in early 2003. The Iron Magnet deposit is located 53 km southwest of Whyalla in the South Middleback Range, South Australia. It is a Paleoproterozoic stratabound magnetite deposit that lies down-dip and lateral to the Iron Duke hematite deposit, hosted within the Lower Middleback Iron Formation of the Hutchison Group meta-sediments within the Cleve subdomain of the Gawler Craton. Magnetite bearing host units within the Lower Middleback Iron Formation can be divided into a æmixedÆ basal sequence, a lower iron carbonate unit, a middle iron talc unit and an upper iron silica unit, all units grading up sequence and laterally into one another. The magnetite mineralisation is hydrothermal in origin. The strongest consistent mineralisation coincides with the iron carbonate unit, and the hematite orebodies of the Iron Duke are interpreted to represent up-dip supergene enrichment of the same unit. The Iron Magnet occurs within a large-scale parasitic syncline-anticline pair on the west limb of a larger syncline. Major bounding north-south shear zones occur on the east and west sides of the deposit. Cross-cutting west-northwest, northwest, northeast and east-northeast trending faults displace mineralisation. The commencement of drilling in 2003 lead to the migration of geological and geochemical databases, re-logging and re-assaying of all old cores that intersected the deposit, updating of logging codes and procedures, and strict Qa/Qc procedures to ensure the study satisfied JORC standards. External consultants were used for auditing and bench marking. The strong geophysical responses of magnetite and the wealth of close spaced ground magnetic and gravity data already completed over the Middleback Ranges allowed for refining of drill hole targets for the drilling program. It also provided an indirect method for ascertaining magnetite grade and tonnage volumes.

The eastern third of Australia contains an unrivalled Phanerozoic rock record generated by the regional interaction of Gondwanaland with the Pacific and by the global effect of the 400 m.y. Pangaea - Panthalassa cycle. Between the latest Proterozoic (600 Ma) breakup of Proto-Pangaea and the mid-Carboniferous coalescence of the dispersed continents in Pangaea, the Lachlan and Thomson Foldbelts accreted to the craton by Mariana-type (backarc basin) and Chilean-type (continental margin) subduction from eastward jumps of the Palaeo- Pacific rim. Further jumps of the rim of the Permian and Mesozoic Pacific, now expanded to Panthalassa, accreted the New England Foldbelt to the craton. An Early Permian rift basin was succeeded by a Late Permian to mid-Triassic foreland basin which extended between the craton and the foldbelt behind the 10000 km Panthalassan rim, from the Bowen Basin of Queensland to South America, and was host to the productive coal measures of eastern Australia, as the succeeding Jurassic and Early Cretaceous foreland and epicratonic basins included the coal measures, hydrocarbon reservoirs, and aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin. The magmatic arc on the Australian margin ended after the mid-Cretaceous uplift along the Queensland coast that initiated southwestward drainage from the high Pacific rim. The Chilean-type subduction that had prevailed since the Devonian was superseded shortly afterwards by Mariana-type subduction with the successive generation of the back-arc basins of the Tasman Sea, Coral Sea, and other southwest Pacific basins by the migration of the island arc to its present position 2500 km eastward of Australia.

The oolitic iron ore reserves in Lisakovsky, North Kazakhstan represent quite a challenging deposit both from a technological and from a resource point of view. The difficulties in processing such types of ore are connected with the extremely fine dissemination of phosphorus and gangue minerals inside the oolitic formations. The goethite crystals are cemented in their structure by aluminosilicates with quartz and other gangue minerals and dissemination is so fine that they are not separable by physical methods. The laboratory tests performed for dephosphorisation show that the combination of alkaline roasting followed by low intensity magnetic separation and acid leaching enables the obtaining of high grade iron concentrate. The magnetic separation performed ahead of leaching is effi cient as a means of buffering the high pH by washing out the soluble salts and the excess of base and after leaching facilitates the removal of secondary liberated gangue minerals in the non-magnetic fraction. As a consequence, phosphorous content is dropped to a more acceptable level for the ferrous metallurgy and iron grade and recovery reach 61.6 and 80.8 per cent respectively.

In this study, a systematic examination of the scale and variety of micro-structures in coal using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been carried out, using coal samples of differing stages of coalification from the Bowen Basin and New Zealand. SEM provides detail of various micro-structural features and shows that a variety of micron-sized fractures and cavities are present in coals. These are differentiated into three pore types: fracture porosity, phyteral porosity and matrix porosity. Fracture porosity is generally associated with bright coals (although it has been shown that micro-fractures are present in maceral fragments from the dull coal layers). Characteristically the macro- and micro- fractures form a continuous structural fabric through the bright coal layers and thus make a significant contribution to overall permeability. The macro- and micro-fractures appear to have been formed during the process of coalification rather than being formed due to shrinkage during methane extraction, as most of them are infilled with secondary minerals. In contrast, phyteral and matrix porosity is associated with the dull coal layers that are composed of plant fragments or a heterogeneous mixture of macerals. Like the macro- and micro-fractures, the continuity of the observed cavities suggest that these too are a significant contribution to overall permeability, and therefore play a major role in the transmissibility of methane at a level between diffusion at the micropore level and laminar flow at the macro-fracture level. Due to different spacing, orientation and persistence of individual fractures and cavities, the rate of methane transmissibility through a coalseam will vary according to coal rank, coal type and the organic precursors from which the coal was derived. This is important as a knowledge of the micro-structure system and its relationship to coal type and coal rank, plays an important consideration in: a) gas drainage modelling, b) enhancing permeability by inducing fractures and c) predicting the occurrence of outbursts.

The article, as written, represents a short account of the treatment of the base bullion from the Broken Hill ores, as carried on at Port Pirie, for the recovery of lead, silver, and gold, and for the treatment of by-products. Appended is a short description of the chief facilities of plant which have been adopted to overcome the main difficulties in the refining of lead the Howard press and stirrer. The article is within the limit prescribed by the regulation for the prize offered by the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, comprising 30 pages, containing an average of about 200 words per page, exclusive of analyses, photographs, and sketches.The writer desires to thank those to whom he is indebted for their- kindness in affording him every facility possible to obtain the information which he required for the success of such a paper-viz., Messrs. Robertson, Leavens, and Gronow, of the Broken Hill Propritary Co. Limited, at Port Pirie, and Mr. Crowther, of the Adelaide School of Mines, to whom he is indebted for photographs. The difficulty of obtaining fair samples of gold drosses, and the inability to obtain particulars of fuel consumptions, prevents the paper from being as complete as one would wish. The limited length precludes detail, except in more important parts.

The movements of the major continental cratons and the distribution of the principal tectonostratigraphic terranes are reviewed in the Circum-Pacific region during Phanerozoic time. It is concluded that major periods of orogeny and consolidation of accreted terranes in the Circum-Pacific region is best correlated with periods of advance of cratonic blocks over the Pacific Ocean basin combined with relative convergent to transpressive motions between the cratons and the Pacific Ocean plates. Continental collisions and collision of terranes with continental margins has not been a significant geodynamic process in Circum-Pacific tectonic evolution. The permanency of the Pacific Ocean basin throughout 500 MA is remarkable. It appears no continental block or large continental fragment has ever entered or crossed the Pacific Ocean basin since early Paleozoic time. This area where no continent has entered for 500 MA is almost coincident with the present Pacific Ocean basin and seems associated with the 25 to 100 meter geoid high which dominates the present-day figure of the Earth.

The title of this paper suggests rather a comprehensive survey of the industry, but since it is not possible to do justice to this in a short paper, and, as the bulk of the Australian trade consists of buttwelded tube, the author proposes to deal only with this type.The buttweld process has been praetised for many years and, as the methods of manufacture are not widely known, a brief history of its development may be of interest. Few good reference books in the English language are available, and this reticence may possibly have retarded advancement in manufacture.The earliest method of making ferrous tubes consisted of bending a thin plate or strip to form a "skelp." The "skelp" was then raised to a welding heat and hammerwelded on an internal mandrel on a smith's anvil. Necessity, however, soon produced mechanical methods of making tubes, and, in 1812, an Englishman named Osborn patented machinery for "welding and making barrels of fire-arms and other cylindrical articles." The apparatus was arranged as shown in Fig. 1.The skelp was raised to a welding heat and placed in the swage block "A." A mandrel was then inserted and the tube lapwelded by the action of the tilt hammer.Various modifications of this apparatus quickly followed, to keep pace with the rapidly growing demand and the exigencies of war. These tubes were essentially of short length and mainly used for gun barrels. The advent of coal gas for lighting (patented by Murdoch) created a demand for small tubes of longer length, and necessity, as usual, produced a solution. In 1824 Jas. Pre-concentration of low grade ores via the rejection of low/no value materials based on fragment size is the subject of many published papers and studies over the past decade. However, the possibility of upgrading should not limited to low grade ores given the high cost of capital, energy, water, reagents, and ultimately tailings storage across the mining industry. Mining and processing facilities at Olympic Dam consist of an: 1) underground mine where ore is extracted via sublevel open stoping and 2) integrated processing plant located on the surface which produces Cu-cathode, Au-Ag bullion and uranium oxide concentrate. Blasted ore is trucked/trained to underground crushers which produce an ore feed with a product size P80 = -145 mm. Crushed ore is then hoisted to the surface and delivered to the ROM pads via an overland conveyor. The typical copper grade of mill feed is approximately 2 wt%. A rapid assessment of the potential to upgrade Olympic Dam mill feed prior to the ROM pads via rejection of low value materials based on fragment size was completed using existing data. Three separate datasets were utilised to assess the deportment of Cu, U, Au across size ranges of 200 mm down to sub-8 m. Cumulative grade vs cumulative mass distribution graphs for each element were produced. This data clearly demonstrates that Cu, U, Au grades remain constant down to ~212 m, which happens to be the liberation size of the sulfides. Hence, no potential to upgrade the ore stream via rejection of +200 mm - to ~212 m sized materials prior to milling. Mineralisation within the Olympic Dam Fe-oxide Cu-U-Au-Ag deposit (IOCG) occurs as disseminated sulfide grains within granite- to hematite-rich breccias. The typical sulfide grain size is sub-200 m that supports the outcomes of the grade deportment by fragment size study.

This is the first of two papers concerned with rock stress inputs to various mine design issues at the large Ok Tedi open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. The companion paper (also published at this conference) is ‘The Application of Rock Stress Inputs to Stability Assessments at Ok Tedi Mine, Papua New Guinea’ (de Bruyn et al, 2014).Stresses are a required input for numerical modelling of mine design issues. However, for some operations, like the very large Ok Tedi open pit mine in remote rugged mountainous terrain, direct and representative measurement of rock stresses can be technically difficult and expensive. In such situations, development of an appropriate and sufficient understanding of rock stresses can be challenging.This was addressed for Ok Tedi by considering the following:The tectonic and regional geologic setting of the mine.Results from three different programs of rock stress measurement over 19 years, including hydraulic fracturing (1991), acoustic emission (2007) and overcoring (2010). Some interesting results of the overcoring work are discussed. Today, it can be said that the majority of mines utilise communications equipment in one form or another. Either for communications between staff making their day-to-day operations more efficient, or for emergency communications, as well as linking computer based mine management systems, and providing remote control over complex mobile and fixed machinery. With the advances in technology now available, we are moving into the next generation of mine communications equipment, using digital communications in the underground mine environment. It is a proven fact that an efficient underground mine communications system can help maximise production, by providing major gains in areas such as equipment and manpower utilisation, staff and vehicle tracking, reaction times to break downs and emergencies. In this paper we will describe some of the facilities that are currently available, as well as what will soon be available to mining and tunnelling companies around the world.
