For many years the Metals Research Laboratory of Carnegie Institute of Technology has been concerned with the statistical nature of the engineering properties of steel from an experimental viewpoint, particularly those properties representing ductility.' In the past three years new work has been directed toward evaluating the statistical nature of the endurance properties. It has been shown that both the fracture curve and the endurance limit in fatigue are markedly statistical in nature. The S-N curve (and the endurance limit) of ferrous materials is often determined with specimens which number as few as ten. The common procedure is to test the first specimen at a stress well above the expected endurance hmit. Each succeeding specimen is then tested at a progressively lower stress, until, after five or six tests, a specimen runs ten million or so cycles without failing. Two or three more specimens are then used to find the highest stress at which failure will not occur; the limiting stress determined in this way is called the endurance limit. It has now been found, however, that the variability in the fracture curve and in the endurance limit in heat-treated alloy forging steels is so great that S-N curves must be drawn on the basis of distribution curves which can be appraised only by statistical methods. Two methods have been adopted in this study: (1) straightforward statistical studies of cycles to fracture of a number of specimens at each of a series of stress levels, and (2) a new abbreviated statistical method, known as "staircase testing."2 The latter corisists in testing a series of specimens, one by one, with the test stress for any given specimen automatically

POSTSCRIPT.*-Since the publication of my paper upon the blackening of the surface of rocks in desert regions, I have noted that similar views of the origin of superficial discoloration in the case of certain rocks from the Salt Lake basin of Utah have been expressed by Prof. George P. Merrill. In the pamphlet, he described the brown-coated weathered boulders from Tooele county, reaching the conclusion that the discoloration was due to the solution of the manganese and iron compounds 'in the interior of the boulder, while they were in the water, and the gradual bringing of this material to the surface through capillarity and its oxidation when exposed.

THE first pump of this character, made by H. R. Worthington, and, so far as the writer is informed, the first and only one of this kind ever constructed, is now in daily use in the above-named works. The water-pressure necessary for the working of the hydraulic machinery of this plant had been supplied, up to the time of the building of this pump, by two Worthington Duplex High Pressure Pumps, having steam-cylinders of 20 inches diameter and 12-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 72 inches diameter; eight inlet and eight outlet valves of 22 inches diameter, and pumping into a 6-inch pipe. These pumps required a large amount of steam, and, in consequence of the various additions to their duty, their capacity became far short of the work required. In preference to putting in another engine of the same class, it was decided to accept Mr. Worthington's proposition to build the compound one under description, he guaranteeing that it should be equal to the demands of the works, and at the same time cause a saving of from 5 to 6 tons of coal per day from the amount required to run the two old pumps. The new engine has been in operation about one month, and so far has exceeded the most sanguine expectations. It consists of two high-pressure cylinders of 21 inches and two low-pressure ones of 36g inches diameter, by 36-inch stroke, with water-plungers of 91 inches diameter. There are two air-pumps of 20 inches diameter by 18-inch stroke; the condenser being 24 inches diameter by 60 inches high. Both cylinders are jacketed with wood and felt, and the low-pressure cylinder also with live steam. The high and low pressure steam-cylinders are in line and immediately adjoining each other, while the inconveniences attending an internal stuffing-box are avoided by having two piston-rods for each of the low-pressure cylinders, running through stuffing-boxes on the outside of the smaller high-pressure ones. THE CHAIRMAN of the fast growing Petroleum Division is not only a graduate of the University of California, but a third generation native son. After a few years spent in hard-rock geology, his professional efforts were transferred to the sedimentaries and to petroleum investigations, as a consulting geologist. For ten years these investigations covered the Rocky Mountain, Oklahoma, Texas, and eastern districts. After the war he returned to Casper, Wyo., as chief geologist for the Consolidated Royalty Oil and Western Exploration Companies. This employment afforded him the opportunity to study particularly the economic relationship between the lessor-lessee interests in development and production, a somewhat unusual type of petroleum specialization.

Many of you who are interested in the manufacture of iron and steel, have no doubt heard of the "Wheeler process for combining iron and steel." Mr. Wheeler has formed a company, styled the "Combination Trust Company," whose business is to grant licenses for the use of this patent process in producing what he calls "iron-clad steel." It has been proposed to apply it in the manufacture of car or wagon axles, also to shafting, having steel cores or centres covered with iron; to tubes of steel with an inner and outer skin of iron ; to structural purposes, such as girders and beams; bridge and tie-bolts, where the strength of the iron and the rigidity of the steel would be desirable. In answer to a request from Mr. Wheeler, permission mas accorded him to make some experiments at the rolling mill of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, at Reading, Pennsylvania, with a view to manufacturing some steel-headed rails. In making this kind of a rail two difficulties are encountered. If the iron is brought to the requisite heat to weld properly, the steel is likely to be burned; if the steel is cared for, to prevent burning, the several layers of iron are not brought up to the proper welding heat. Mr. Wheeler claimed that the steel slab covered with iron which he furnished for the head of the rail could net be injured by any heat to which it might be subjected in the ordinary course of heating the rail-pile. He claimed, also, that by this method the porosity, which he thought was characteristic of all solid rails of Bessemer steel, would be overcome. Four steel slabs were furnished for this experiment, being Bessemer steel of .61 carbon, made at the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, and covered with iron in one of the Pittsburgh mills. The slabs were in section seven inches wide by three inches thick, and the iron covering was one-eighth to three-sixteenths inch thick. A number of the copper refineries in this country have lately separated some of the rarer metals from the slimes in the refinery tanks. One of these has furnished me the following table of recoveries from given amounts of blister. I publish this to show the proportions, to gold and silver and to each other, in which these rarer metals may be expected to occur in copper from certain localities. GarFIeld, Utah :—The blister copper comes principally from the Bingham porphyry copper mines. Steptoe, Nev. :—All the blister copper is produced from the Nevada Consolidated mines. (Also porphyry deposits.) Omaha, Neb. :—Blister copper comes principally from concentrated copper-lead mattes shipped from the different lead-silver plants of the Rocky Mountain region to the converters at the Omaha lead refinery. Mountain, Cal. :—Ores occur in connection with diorite (?).

Annual production of more than 4,000,000 tons of 0.74 percent copper ore and coincident handling of over 5,000,000 tons of waste at the open-pit mine of Castle Dome Copper Co. near Miami, Ariz. takes a lot of power. Manufacturers have ever co-operated with mining companies in providing the required equipment to suit the problem. Power equipment suppliers have done much to make possible the economic and profitable production of copper from low-grade ores. In the future, as mining operations will necessarily handle even lower-grade ores, the ability of the manufacturer to supply the power and mechanical equipment to produce more metal at a fair and reasonable price will be the good right arm of the miner. About 27,000 tons of concentrate is produced from the 4,000,000 tons of ore.

WE produce Charles Van Ormer "Charlie" Millikan as living proof that man need not make a loud noise to be heard. His quietly affable, analytical, and soft-spoken manner in the face of all problems belies his ability to "get tough" when the situation demands it. As a chief engineer with many responsibilities for the success of a large producing company there must have been many occasions to tempt Charlie to excitement, but there are few, if any, who can say they saw him yield. He has an abiding faith in the benefits of hard and persistent work and will not admit the existence of a problem that cannot be reduced by it.

WHEN the present Chairman of the Coal Division, A.I.M.E. applied for membership in the Institute 28 years ago one of his endorsers was Howard N. Eavenson, with whom he has now been associated as a partner in a Pittsburgh consulting coal - mining engineering firm for 22 years. Back of that association was some ten years of operating work in Kentucky. Mr. Alford was born in Philadelphia on Dec. 11, 1887, and was educated in Quaker schools, graduating from Swarthmore with an A.B. in 1909, later receiving a B.S. and an E.M. from the University of Pittsburgh. In the summers of 1907 and 1908 he had his first taste of coal mining as a chainman for the U. S. Coal and Coke Co. in Gary, W. Va. Upon graduating in 1909 he got a job on the by-product coke ovens of the Illinois Steel Co. at Joliet, Ill., but a year later went to Kentucky as superintendent of the Shamrock mine of the St. Bernard Mining Co., by which company he was employed for the next ten years. Successively he was assistant chief engineer, chief engineer, and assistant to the president. His duties were varied, including all the engineering duties commonly associated with coal mining, both underground and on the surface, construction of washing plants, prospecting, reports on new properties, power plants, safety work, and labor relations.

The resin-in-pulp (RIP) ion exchange process was originally conceived by the Atomic Energy Commission in the early 1950's. However it was developed to commercial success by the Anaconda Co. at its 3000-tpd ore processing mill in Grants, N. M. Essentially, the Anaconda mill's crushing, grinding and acid leaching operations are the same as at the nearby Kerr-McGee mill, except that Anaconda uses manganese dioxide instead of sodium chlorate as oxidant during acid leaching. IN times of stress nations pick strong men to lead them. Similarly the Coal Division selected forceful Larry A. Shipman, fuel engineer for the Southern Coal and Coke Co., Knoxville, Tenn.. to lead it through the year 1945. He was born in Indianapolis May 13, 1891. Following graduation from a technical high school in that city Larry began his fuel career approximately 35 years ago attached to one end of a scoop shovel, firing locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad. At the end of two years he transferred to the New York Central Lines and held these jobs successively: locomotive fireman, engineer, fireman instructor, supervisor of instructors, and fuel engineer.

Their names are published for the information of members and associates, from whom the Committee on Membership earnestly invites confidential communications, favorable or unfavorable, concerning these candidates. A sufficient period (varying in the discretion of the Committee, according to the residence of the candidate) will be allowed for the reception of such communications, before any action upon these names by the Committee. After the lapse of this period, the Committee will recommend action by the Council, which has the power of final election. The names of candidates were formerly published in the various circulars of the Institute, issued from time to time to the members. Hereafter, they will appear regularly in the Bi-Monthly Bulletin, each number of which will contain the names received since the issue of the preceding Bulletin.
