As the complexity of hydrometallurgical systems increases, it offers new opportunity for applications of solvent extraction. However, the high capital cost of mixer-settlers for large flow rates is a drawback to wide application in base metal recovery. This paper presents information on the use of cyclone separators in place of settlers with attendant significant reduction in capital cost. Various flowsheet possibilities for this development are discussed.

FOUR factors that largely determine the end product obtained when cement and water are mixed are the chemical composi-tion of the cement, the fineness to which the cement is ground, the amount of mixing water used, and the procedure used in mixing the slurry. In order to study the effect of two of these factors, the other two, the chemical composition and method of mixing, are kept constant, leaving as variables fineness and water-cement ratio. In June the supply of M3 army demolition powder being used for mudcapping was depleted and we switched to 4 by 8, 60% Special Quarry Gelatin dynamite. This size cartridge has proved convenient, as a half stick will handle the average boulder. By keeping the gelatin in the paper while cutting it in two, there is little contact with the gelatin and therefore fewer headaches among the powdermen. To further help prevent the headache nuisance the men are furnished with plastic coated gloves. Boulder breaking costs as reported last year were $0.426 using M3. This year, 8180 boulders have been broken with M3 at a cost of $0.472 each and 7479 with 60% Quarry Gelatin at a cost of $0.660 each. This rise in cost is due entirely to the greater cost of the Gelatin as the method has not changed.

The Reconstruction and Research Division of the United States Council of National Defense has, up to date, prepared two reviews on the above subjects: one covers foreign countries and the other covers the activities in the States. These reviews contain information appearing in various Governmental and public periodicals. While the information on foreign countries is necessarily incomplete and fragmentary, its summation is perhaps the most complete work of this kind so far accomplished. The information from the states consists mainly of bills and ordinances introduced in the state legislature, municipal councils, legislature committee reports, programs suggested by governors, and other state and local officials and local organizations It is realized that a good deal of this information will be useful to engineers studying conditions in the various states, and especially to those who want an insight into the general condition in all the states. For instance, the reconstruction problem in each state involving highway, reclamation, buildings, etc., are covered in detail.

The roles of the phase diagram and the diffusion and solubility analyses in the selection of sources for the diffusion of zinc into GaAs are discussed. Isothermal sections of- the phase diagram are described at 1000°, 775°, 744°, and 700°. Below 744° the three solid phases, Zn3As2, GaAs, and ZnAsz, may be in equilibrium. In the composition regions where the three solid phases are in equilibrium, the partial pressures of the components do not vary with composition and there is no liquid phase. A diffusion source composition within that region containing 5, 50, and 45 at. pct Ga, As, and Zn was selected to yield reproducible diffusion profiles without surface damage. The 5/50/45 ternary source Provides a significant improvement in the reproducibility and planarity of- the zinc diffusion as compared with other zinc diffusion sources that result from starting with elemental zinc, dilute solutions of zinc in gallium, or various combinations of zinc and arsenic. Several experimental diffision profiles for the 5/50/45 diffusion source have been determined. The profiles are very steep in the region of the junction and produce devices that exhibit step junction behavior. The junction depth varies as the square root of time. Diffusion at 700°C for 4 hr gives a 5-µ junction depth and a surface concentration of 2.4 x1020 cm-3. The surface concentration is enhanced by a factor of three and the junction depth decreased by a factor of ten as compared with diffusion with a starting source 01- elemental zinc. The differences in dijyusion behavior with these two sources are due primarily to the approximately 10' greater equilibrium As4 partial pressure for the 5/50/45 source. ThE most common technique for the preparation of GaAs p-n junctions for diverse applications ranging from switching diodes to injection lasers has been to diffuse zinc into the solid from the vapor phase. The zinc impurity has generally been provided by introducing into a diffusion ampoule elemental zinc, dilute solutions of zinc in gallium, or various combinations of zinc and arsenic. For the purpose of eliminating surface deterioration, zinc has been diffused into GaAs through SiO2 films1 and from zinc-doped SiO2 films.2 During a study of the injection and recombination mechanisms in GaAs junctions, we found that these diffusion techniques either resulted in nonreproducible diffusion profiles and nonplanar junction interfaces or were extremely inconvenient to use. An unpublished report by Allen and pearson3 emphasized that an understanding of diffusion requires relating the diffusion conditions and system compositions to the ternary phase diagram. Recent studies have made it possible to relate the effect of starting source composition on the GaAs sample surface and diffusion profile reproducibility and, in addition, to estimate the expected surface concentration and zinc diffusivity. These studies include the Ga-As-Zn phase diagram,415 the determination of the incorporation reaction for zinc as a substitutional impurity,6 and the analysis of the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient.' In this paper the role of the phase diagram in the selection of the starting diffusion source composition is illustrated, and an application of the diffusion and solubility analyses is used to demonstrate their utility in the estimation of surface concentration and diffusivity for various starting source compositions. Consideration of the isothermal sections of the ternary phase diagram shows that below about 744° C a composition region exists where the three solid phases Zn3As2, GaAs, and ZnAs2 are in equilibrium without a liquid phase. In this region the partial pressures of the components do not vary with composition, and thus the surface concentration and diffusivity depend only on temperature. A diffusion source composition within that region containing 5, 50, and 45 at. pct Ga, As, and Zn was selected. As will be described in detail, this diffusion source yields reproducible diffusion profiles without surface damage, planar junction interfaces, and steep profiles that result in devices with step junction behavior. Only closed diffusion systems are considered. Open or flowing vapor systems require the maintaining of constant vapor pressures in the flowing gas and represent control problems outside the scope of this discussion.

Recent experitnents on crystal growth have indicated that thermal convection in the liquid influences the conditions of solidification and subsequent crystal characteristics. However, the important columnar-equiaxed transition in castings has not been examined as a function of this free convection. An experiment is presented here to demonstrate a change in the transition as convection is suppressed. Lead- and tin-based alloys were cast in stainless-steel molds either without special procedures or with thin grids placed horizontally across the tnold diameter in portions of the castings. While the grids allowed some diffusion of heat and mass transport to occur during solidification, massive fluid flow was hindered in the vegiotz of the grids. A larger percentage of columnar grains appeared in the grid region than in other parts of the special castings or than in all regions of normal castings. This structural difference can be explained in terms of thermal convection. THERE is little information about the possible effects of natural convection which may occur during the solidification of a casting. Ruddlel-3 has stated that the movement of liquid metal produced by convection might assist in the transfer of heat, but in the absence of confirmatory evidence he suggested that this idea be treated with caution. chalmers4 considers, but does not assess, the importance of fluid motion in casting, while Tiller5 suggests that, in liquid metals which have extremely high thermal diffusivities, the effects of thermal convection may be negligible. In addition, throughout the literature, there are statements indicating the possible presence of thermal convection but without proofs or evaluations of its influence. Natural convection may be divided into two categories: thermal convection, where liquid flow is due to density differences caused by temperature gradients in the liquid (e.g., liquid near a cold wall falling with respect to hotter liquid further away from the wall); and solute convection, where flow is due to density differences as a result of concentration gradients, see Wagner.6 In most instances thermal convection predominates over solute convection. Nevertheless, even thermal convection has not been studied in any detail and is difficult to handle, since it can vary quantitatively from one experiment to another depending upon the exact positions of heat sources and sinks or the attitude of the container with respect to gravity. In spite of these difficulties it is possible to realize that a higher rate of heat transfer must result with convection than in any situation where conduction acts alone. Thus, the degree of increased heat transfer is the important undecided question in considerations of casting. It will be demonstrated here that a reduction in convective flow leads to a suppression of the columnar-equiaxed transition in a casting and that this suppression is related to a decrease in the degree of heat transfer. Fortunately it is possible to do this by comparative rather than quantitative measures. The insertion of horizontal plates or grids into a simple mold does not appreciably influence heat transfer per se, but in reducing the allowable height through which colder liquid may fall freely it reduces natural thermal convection. This leads to a reduced fluid velocity, a different flow pattern, and an altered heat transfer which can be measured. EXPERIMENTS The alloys were prepared from elements of 99.9 pct nominal purity and cast into an uncoated 2-in.-diameter stainless-steel mold insulated at the bottom with a suitable refractory so as to ensure predominantly radial heat flow during freezing. Casting was performed either in empty molds or in molds containing grids or plates in various configurations . The grids were constructed of aluminum screen (1/32 in. thick) which was cut to the desired shape, cleaned in aqua regia, and coated with a mixture of 2 parts aqua dag graphite -1 part Sauereisen cement mixture, thus supplying a hard, protective, and insulating layer approximately 0.006 in. thick. The results of an exploratory investigation by means of resistivity measurements at -195ºC, on the aging characteristics of a set of Al-Mg alloys with a maximum content of 7 pct Mg, are reported. Whereas for dilute alloys (Mg < 1.5 pct) only a decrease in resistivity is observed at about 100°C (due to the elimination of quenched-in vacancies), for more concentrated alloys such a decrease is preceded by an increase in resistivity in the range between -60ºand +40°C. Following some previous suggestions, this increase is considered as good evidence for clustering of solute atoms @reprecipi-tation process). From the analysis of the results it appears that, although the process is substantially similar to that observed in other Al-rich alloys, it is characterized by a strong interaction between vacancies and zones. THE process of formation of Guinier-Preston zones, i.e., preprecipitation,1&apos;2 which occurs during the aging at about room temperature in many supersaturated aluminum-rich alloys, has been extensively investigated in the past few years by several workers.2,3 owever, a very interesting question arises when the case of Al-Mg alloys is considered: although it is very easy to supersaturate Al-Mg alloys, just in the same way as for many other aluminum alloys showing preprecipitation, only very little experimental evidence was available until a short time ago in the literature supporting the existence of "natural" aging in supersaturated Al-Mg alloys (see, for example, Refs. 4 to 6). On the other hand, as is well known, the X-ray method is not useful in this case because the X-ray scattering factors of magnesium and aluminum atoms are about the same. Recently, however, Cordier and Detert7 have stressed that during the aging at about room temperature of a supersaturated Al-Mg 10 pct alloy it is possible to detect an increase in resistivity; since, as is well known, such an increase is observed also in most alloys showing preprecipitation, the above authors have interpreted their results as evidence for the formation of magnesium-rich clusters (or Guinier-Preston zones) during the aging. In the course of or ientative investigations on preprecipitation in several aluminum-rich alloys, we also could detect a similar phenomenon in more dilute Al-Mg alloys, see Instituto Sperimentale Metalli Leggeri, Annual Report, 1959, and also Ref. 8. Since the details of our observations, although of a preliminary nature, differ from those of Cordier and Detert and allow one to draw a more advanced picture of the preprecipitation process in Al-Mg alloys, we have thought it useful to report our results in this paper and to comment on them briefly.

INTRODUCTION THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co.&apos;s plant at Miami, Ariz., was designed and built to make possible the profitable working of a low-grade, finely disseminated copper deposit containing 100,000,000 tons of ore averaging 1.64 per cent. in copper. From the-beginning it was evident that the-plant could not, be kept integral but that a break would have to be made somewhere in the flow-sheet, removing at least the concentrator to a site more suitable than any available near the mine. It was finally decided, after considering numerous arrangements, to do the coarse crushing at the mine, to store the crushed ore in a bin from which it could be loaded into railroad cars and to haul it to the concentrator, an excellent site for which was available about 1 ¾ miles from the mine. The original intention was to equip a plant to treat 7,500 tons of ore per clay, but through the acquisition and proving up of additional ore reserves, the introduction of the Ohio caving system, and the excellent results obtained in the test mill (which made it possible to treat a lower-grade ore than had been thought possible) it was evident that a plant of much greater capacity should be supplied. It was, therefore, decided to treat approximately 15,000 tons of ore per day, the duties of the four main divisions to be as follows:

The plastic flow characteristics of clay water suspensions were first recognized by Binghaml in 1916 and further studied by Ambrose and Loomis&apos; in 1931-1932. Many physical and chemical properties of clay suspensions are deeply influenced by particle size distribution as well as by the exchange cation. Separation of a number of fractions is particularly helpful in making a detailed study of a suspension. A limited amount of work has been conducted on the effects of particle size on specific properties of mud drilling fluids. A knowledge of particle size distribution is essential for a better understanding of fundamental properties of clay suspensions, particularly viscosity and gel strength. The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of particle size on the viscosity and gel properties of clay suspensions and to determine any changes in mineral composition accompanying variation in size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Numerous methods may be used to fractionate a poly-dispersed clay suspension into nearly mono-dispersed systems. Particles larger than 44 micron (325-mesh) may be obtained by wet screening. For sizes from 44 to 1 micron, the fractionation may be accomplished by sedimentation, elutriation plus microscopy,&apos; or turbidimetry.6 When dealing with systems which contain a major portion of particles below l-mi-cron size, slit ultramicroscopy,7 centrifuge methods of Svedberg,5 eams,9 and McBain,l0 and X-ray methods" may be employed. The Sharples super centrifuge has been proved suitable for the economical separation of suspended particles of submicron range.12,13,14 Three-hundred and forty-five gal of 1 per cent by weight Aquagel suspension was mixed in a high-speed 5-gallon mud mixer and the suspension was allowed to stand in 5-gal glass bottles for 30 days to assure full hydration. All particles larger than 44 microns were removed by wet screening. Five fractions in the range of 44 to 1 micron were obtained by sedimentation. The Sharples super centrifuge method described by Hauser and Reed.13 Norton and Speil,14 Ha user and Lynn,15 and Hauser and Schachman,10 as employed to yield five fractions of submicron size. A super centrifuge operation chart prepared by Fancher, Oliphant, and Houssierre12 was used to determine operating conditions for the desired particle ranges. The clay suspension, after removal of all material above 1-micron size, was centrifuged. During rotation of the bowl, the particles were deposited on a thin plastic liner which fit closely inside the bowl. After passing 5 gal of suspension through the centrifuge, the liner was removed and the particles on the liner were scraped off, remixed and recentrifuged. This was repeated five times. Thus, Fractions H, I, K, and L were obtained. The finest fraction, M, remained in an approximately 0.4 per cent suspension. Water was evaporated under reduced pressure from this suspension to yield the finest particles. Results of the fractionation are included in Table 1. In order to achieve proper orientation and humidity conditions for X-ray diffraction analysis, the following procedure was employed. The dilute suspensions were placed on glass slides and allowed to dry at room temperature. This was repeated several times. Previous to measurement each sample first was placed in a water desiccator for half an hour and then allowed to stand for 15 minutes at room temperature. thus yielding an equilibrium condition of about 52 per cent relative humidity. The relative humidity of the room in which the X-ray diffraction was carried out was maintained at approximately 50 per cent so that there was no change in the spacings during the X-ray examination. USE of a hydrometallurgical approach to the oxidation of sulfide ores and extraction of metals therefrom may have advantages over the more common smelting techniques when a low grade deposit is difficult to concentrate or the subsequent separation of metals, coexisting in the ore, is laborious by any known smelting operation. For economic reasons, the most promising oxidants are either atmospheric oxygen or electric power. The use of oxygen, or air under pressure, has recently been revised. Pyrrhotite has been converted to iron oxide and elementary sulfur&apos; and a variety of sulfides have been treated by Forward and co-workers.2-4 Generally sulfate is the end form of the sulfur but with galena in an acid medium, elementary sulfur can be formed." For economic reasons chlorine and ferric iron salts are about the only possible alternatives to the atmosphere as oxidizing agents for base metal sulfides. If aqueous solutions of chlorine or ferric iron are employed, the reduction products can be oxidized electrolytically in situ and used again, thus acting as catalysts for electric power as oxidant. The use of ferric salts for this purpose is established hydrometallurgical practicea but, although chlorine gas has been employed in the dry state at an elevated temperature, its use in aqueous solution at or near room temperature has not found favor. The reaction of chlorine water with the soluble sulfide ion has been studied by several workers,7-9 and both sulfate and elemental sulfur are found as end products, the latter being favored by the presence of a low concentration of oxidant relative to that of sulfide in solutions of about pH 9 to 10. Of direct bearing on the work in hand are an early American patent" and a recent Austrian patent." The former advocates stirring powdered ore with an aqueous solution of ferric chloride chlorine oxides and chlorine. In the latter it is claimed that both metal and sulfur can be obtained by electrolysis, in a diaphragm cell, of a metal ore slurry in brine. Details in these patents are scant and no data or explanation is given for the mechanism of the reaction which, in the Austrian work, is attributed to the (unlikely) action of nascent chlorine at the anode surface. No mention is made of possible differences in behaviour between various ores. Apparatus A complication encountered when working with chlorine water is that a serious loss of chlorine occurs by gas partitioning unless an enclosed system is used and any air space in the apparatus is kept very small and constant. Arrangements were made, therefore, to take out samples for analysis without letting air into the system to replace the liquid removed. For convenience in studying a heterogeneous reaction the apparatus was so designed that a reproducible controlled stirring rate could be maintained and the ratio of surface area of ore to volume of solution was approximately constant throughout any experiment. The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1. The ground ore was placed in the horizontal cylindrical vessel, A, of about 1 liter capacity, heated by a constant temperature circulating bath pumping water through the concentric jacket, B. By adding chro-mate to this water, an ultraviolet radiation filter effectively surrounded the reaction vessel, greatly reducing any possible photochemical decomposition of chlorine solutions. Stirring was effected by glass paddles, C, attached by an axle to a magnet which was rotated by another powerful Alnico magnet, D, outside the glass end, this magnet being itself rotated by an electric motor electronically controlled to constant speed. Speed could be varied from about 150 to 900 rpm and was measured and held to within 1 pct of a given value. The end of the reaction vessel remote from the stirring magnet was closed by another one-ended glass cylinder, E, connected by thin polyethylene bellows, F, clamped by screw clamps and watertight rubber gaskets to the main vessel. Through E, a glass electrode and calomel electrode projected into the solution and a hypodermic syringe pierced a small bung and allowed acid or alkaline to be added to maintain a constant pH. By pushing the fully extended bellows until the two cylinders touched, from 50 to 100 ml of solution could be forced out through a sintered disk into the three-way tap system, G, either to waste (for flushing purposes) or up into a 10 ml burette where the solution could subsequently be measured out for analysis. The ore samples were introduced at H, the tube being stoppered by a thermometer of —1 to +52ºC range, graduated to 0.1°C intervals.
