The objective of this study was to investigate the environmental effects of slaking of surface mine spoils. To accomplish this, both field and laboratory programs were undertaken, supplemented by a thorough literature search. The field program consisted of drilling the highwall as well as test pitting in recent, two-, five, and ten- year-old spoil piles at four active mining sites in the eastern bituminous coal fields. Pertinent observations were made and samples collected for laboratory analyses which consisted of several standard geotechnical, agronomic, and geochemical tests. Durability tests utilized included jar slake, cyclic wet-dry, rate of slake, and slake durability tests. Correlation between field and laboratory portions was made- and results presented. The report is concluded with a discussion of the slaking process and associated environmental impacts, proposal of a preliminary classification system for use in premine planning, and presentation of management techniques to optimize the slaking process.

"The Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health, Inc. (Foundation) was established as part of a Non-Prosecution Agreement (Agreement) entered in December 2011 by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the United States Department of Justice and Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (""Alpha"") and Alpha Appalachia Holdings, Inc. This Agreement was related to the explosion at Upper Big Branch Mine, an underground coal mine owned by Performance Coal Company, a former affiliate of Massey Energy Company, which Alpha acquired in June 2011. Pursuant to that agreement, Alpha agreed to establish a trust to fund projects designed to improve mine health and safety by providing $48,000,000 into the trust. The mission and vision of the Foundation are as follows:Mission: To improve mine health and safety through funding research and development projects by qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.Vision: To enable miners in the future to be free of work-related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the Foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute.The focus of the research effort is not limited to coal mine explosion prevention, and in fact encompasses the entire spectrum of health and safety, addressing issues in both underground and surface mining operations in all mining sectors. Four major focus areas are identified (see Figure 1): 1) Health and Safety Interventions; 2) Mine Escape, Rescue, and Training; 3) Safety and Health Management and Training; and 4) Injury and Disease Exposure and Risk Factors.The Foundation is seeking to expand the knowledge base of mining safety and health information that can lead to resolving complex mining problems. To that end, the projects funded by this effort are designed to provide a spectrum of knowledge potentially encompassing the following:• Surveillance data - Collect and analyze surveillance data that better documents the prevalence and trends of occupational safety and health across the mining industry."

This report presents the results of an extensive laboratory testing program to determine the physical properties of shotcrete including the use of fast-set agents, controlled set cements, and both wet and dry shotcreting equipment. Shotcrete was placed under simulated field conditions using the dry and wet processes. Mechanical properties obtained for accelerated and nonaccelerated shotcretes include compressive, flexural, and shear strength, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio, and shear and tensile properties of shotcrete bonded to coal, sandstone, and shale. Physical properties measured were unit weight and permeability to methane gas. The data show that rapid setting shotcrete has the potential for improved coal mine ground control. There is no clear evidence that either wet or dry process shotcrete is superior to the other; however, indications are that regulated set cement is preferred to cement containing fast-setting admixtures.

The Bureau of Nines at Morgantown, W. Va., has been investigating, on a pilot plant scale, various methods of gasifying bituminous coal with oxygen and superheated steam to produce synthesis gas, as part of the broader program of finding new uses for coal. Differences in the pressure gasification methods used have depended on differences in the manner in which the pulverized coal is fed to the gasifier. One of the methods of feeding the coal that was investigated was the continuous, integrated coal-water slurry system. Goal and water were first mixed to produce a slurry; then the slurry was pumped through a heated coil. to evaporate the water fraction; the resulting steam was superheated, and some of it was separated so as to adjust the ratio of the residual steam to the coal fraction and make the resulting mixture suitable for partial combustion with oxygen in a pressure gasifier. Both before and during this reported3 developmental work it was necessary to make an extensive literature search into the technology of aqueous slurries in order to establish design criteria for the pilot plant and to correlate results of various phases of the work with that of other investigators, The pilot work coincided with the commercial development of a long-distance pipe- line for the transportation of coal as a coal-water slurry, and this fact tended to broaden the scope of the pilot plant work and the extent of the literature search. This bibliography is the compilation of the material that was collected.

Pre-cambrian scheelite deposits in Northeastern Brazil are widespread in a high grade metamorphic terrain. Previously these deposits had been interpreted as contact-metasomatic. In this paper, a volcanigenic model is invoked based on the volcanic setting (proximal to distal) and the absence of associated felsic intrusives and spatially associated metasomatic skarns. The tungsten was introduced into sediments by volcanic- exhalative processes and subsequently remobilized and further concentrated by heat and metamorphis fluids associated with high-grade metamorphism and migmitization. An alternative syngenetic - diagenetic model is discussed which requires the transport of tungsten by heteropoly acids and deposition of the tungsten as a function of Eh and Ph conditions and different clastic depositional environments. While such stratabound tungsten deposits are considered rare in North America, the hypotheses developed in this paper may open new areas for exploration.

The published liquidus data on the Pb-PbS system have been correlated on the basis of one-coefficient Margules equations. Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

"This paper presents the final wall blasting practices at Eldorado Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Benchmark and improved wall control designs were explained in detail. Kisladag Mine has been implementing a high quality slope stability program on-site. The quality of pit walls is generally considered excellent, with very few wall failures being evident and with presplit hole barrels prominent in most areas of the pit. However, a minor scale slope failure occurred recently at the north-east section the pit. A project was initiated to diagnose the cause of the crest loss and evaluate ways to limit its effect on final walls. Final wall blasting practices and geotechnical designs were evaluated. The work presented in this paper showed that changes to the blasting and geotechnical parameters are required atthe north-east section of the pit. Geotechnical design changes were 10 m bench heights with 70 ° slope face angle at that specific area. Having implemented several geotechnical and blast design changes (elimination of the subdrill for the catch bench, appropriate primer location, more favorable blast tie-up and delays), the crest loss was minimized significantly (<1.5 m) (<5 ft)."

A comparative characterization of the dimensional and mechanical properties as well as structural aspects of two different types of fibers extracted from the leaves and petioles of the buriti palm tree was performed. A statistical analysis revealed that both types of fibers present a significant dispersion in length and equivalent diameter. However, the corresponding intervals of dimensional variation are sensibly different. The tensile properties showed that both types of fibers display a tendency of higher strength for smaller diameters. Moreover, the fibers extracted from the leaves depict a comparatively lower strength. By contrast, the fibers from the petiole present an average strength sufficiently high for the use as reinforcement of polymeric composites. The structural aspects of tensile-rupture fibers, characterized by scanning electron microscopy, showed marked distinction in the microstructure and fiber behavior of both types of investigated fibers. In 1986, United States&apos; barite production fell 48.9%, consumption - sold or used by grinding plants - was off 47.3%, and imports were down 63.8%. Meanwhile, world mine production decreased 29.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. However, value of US-produced barite FOB mine increased 46.51%, according to USBM figures. The declared value CIF US port of all imported unground barite decreased from $41.94/t ($46.23 per st) to $39.02/t ($43.01 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of barite with 69% of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, and California. The USBM estimates that 65% of the barite mined was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35% was used in the production of barium chemicals and as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector made up a larger percentage of the US produced barite in 1987 than it did in 1986, increasing the overall value per ton of barite. Barite consumption was at its lowest since 1963. It is estimated that 80% of the barite was consumed in the drilling fluid market. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass, and as filler in plastics and paper. The decline of barite used in drilling fluid followed the decline in the average number rotary rigs operating - 964 versus 1968 in 1985. This was the lowest average number of rotary rigs operating since 1971. The non-oilfield market was up 5.3% in 1986. This increase can be attributed to the increased use as a filler in plastics. Imports of crude barite, though down nearly two-thirds, still made up 65% of the barite consumed in the US. China was the leading exporter to the US with 58%, followed by India, 15.4%; Morocco, 11%; Thailand, 5.4%; Mexico, 4.6%; Chile, 3.9%; and Ireland, 1.7%. Less than 1% of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Imports of ground barite dropped from 64.4 kt (71,000 st) to 19.8 kt (21,800 st) in 1986. Of this amount, 14.1 kt (15,500 st) were used in drilling fluids in 1986 and the remainder for non-oilfield use. During 1986, more of the grinding plants supplying the drilling fluid market were closed. Dresser Magcobar and IMCO Services, a Halliburton company, formed M-I Drilling Fluids Co. Mine production in the US will probably decrease in 1987 due to the lower cost of imported ore. No significant change is expected in the drilling fluid market. The average number of operating rotary rigs is estimated at 950 in 1987 versus 965 in 1986. The nondrilling fluid markets (chemicals, glass, and filler) will follow the overall US economy. Bauxite and alumina R. J. Anderson, Ohio State University US bauxite production in 1986 dropped to a pre-World War II level, continuing a decline that began a decade ago. 1986 production totaled 450 kt (496,000 st), compared to 674 kt (743,000 st) in 1985. World production of bauxite also decreased in 1986. This reflected the soft market in alumina, aluminum, and related products. Total mine production worldwide came to 79 Mt (87 million st), down from 85 Mt (94 million st) in 1985. For the sixteenth consecutive year, Australian production of bauxite led all other sources. No other country approached the 28 Mt (31 million st) mined in Australia in 1986, despite a 4.4-Mt (4.9-million st) drop in its output from 1985. Other major producers in 1986 were: Guinea 11 Mt (12 million st), Brazil, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), Jamaica, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), and Suriname 2.8 Mt (3 million st). Despite weakness in world demand for bauxite, Venezuela, heretofore an alumina producer, is now pushing development of a new mining venture near the western border of the state of Bolivar. Plans call for barging bauxite down the Orinoco River to the Ciudad Guyana alumina plant, a distance of 650 km (400 miles).

ZINC concentrate, produced at Zeehan by flotation from Read Rosebery ore, is also dried and roasted at the same place for the production of a calcine suitable for use in the electrolytic zinc process at Risdon, Tasmania.DRYINGThe concentrate, dewatered to 12% moisture by an American filter, is fed into a dryer, the type of construction of which is similar to that of a duplex Edwards furnace. The dryer is 45 ft. long and 14 ft. wide, and has two rows of nine rabbles each, the two pairs nearest the firebox being watercooled.The longitudinal distance between rabble-centres is 4 ft. The rabbles are rotated at a speed of 3 r.p.m. by a I5-h.p. motor. Zinc concentrate is introduced by a screw feeder, consisting of two parallel-blade conveyors, revolving in opposite directions at aspeed of 31 r.p.m.Draft is supplied by a Sirocco fan, 15 in. intake, operated at 1340 r.p.m. by a 10-h.p. motor. The dust carried by the exit gases is removed in a wooden scrubbing tower, 3 ft. 6 in. x 4 ft. 6 in. x 27 ft. high, to which the fan delivers, and down which water issprayed.Wood (eucalyptus timber) is used as fuel, the consumption per ton of water evaporated being 0.55 :ton. Zinc concentrate from the dryer passed either to trucks for shipment or to Herreshoff furnaces. The portion for shipment is withdrawn at a point half-way down the furnace, being loaded on to a belt conveyor for transfer to railway trucks. The moisture at this point is 7% to 8%.

The pjPocesses of polygonization and subgrain growth were followed in slightly stretched 99.99 pct A1 single crystals heated for cumulative times at 400°, 500°, and 600°C. Changes in sub-grain size and boundary angle were determined from measurements on X-ray micrographs. CAHN1, 2 studied polygonization in stretched and heated aluminum single crystals of 99.99 pct A1 using various techniques, including etch pits, Laue patterns, and a slight restretching of heated specimens to reveal small changes in lattice orientation by the direction of new slip lines. He found that kink bands, which had well-defined boundaries lying in a plane perpendicular to the slip direction (at least in the early stages of deformation), formed during stretching. Also, he noted that bending occurred about the <211> axis lying in the (111) slip plane perpendicular to the <110> slip direction. His studies of polygonization were largely confined to the kink bands rather than to the weakly bent matrix regions between bands. The minimum temperature required to bring about polygonization was established at about 450 "C. Guinier and Tenevin used a focusing Laue X-ray diffraction technique to study polygonization in aluminum single-crystal specimens of 99.99 pct purity. Stretching the crystals 5 pct in tension caused a widening of the focused Laue spots. After heating for 4 hr at 450°C, their method revealed no change in the specimen. Above 450°C polygonization was detected and further annealing near 600°C led to subgrain growth. They concluded that the orientation of the crystal relative to the axis of deformation had no marked effect on polygonization. Gay and Honey-combe4 using an X-ray microbeam technique found that polygonization did not occur in a stretched aluminum crystal heated at 250oC, although some decrease in the yield strength occurred. A comprehensive field study has been carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling has been carried out to envisage dust concentration due to the existing and closed mines in the region. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 levels at the selected receptor locations ranged from 86.39 to 194.89 and from 34.82 to 99.55 µg/m³, respectively.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL), investigated a means to evaluate the potential impact of surface conditions above underground mines on emergency response activities. Recent events have highlighted the need to conduct critical emergency operations on the surface above underground work areas. Accessibility and usability of the surface, such as the ability to drill holes or deploy seismic monitoring or through the earth communications systems, are an important consideration for emergency response planning. This paper identifies critical surface conditions such as: surface waters, valley fill, highways, railroads and significant structures that must be considered in emergency response planning and in the conduct of emergency operations as they relate specifically to the seismic detection of trapped underground miners. Results of case studies indicate a need to consider the impact surface conditions may have on emergency response capabilities.

Manufacturing firms that rely on finite resources have a stake in ensuring sustainable materials use. Higher material prices and uncertain material supply, consequences associated with scarcity, can be damaging to firms. Firms have a number of options to improve material sustainability including dematerialization, material substitution and recycling. However, these options require technological capability, capital investments and supply-chain infrastructure; firms may decide to make such investments only if material prices increase. Once decisions are made, the barriers and delays to implementing changes may harm firms. The impact of not reacting to changes in material supply on firms was examined for the case of different platinum-using industries. It was found that taking action is particularly important for firms when limited material availability leads to volatile market conditions. Industries can benefit especially if they ensure process flexibility and have options for changing their material use patterns.

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

In 1949 the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva, Switzerland, established a Classification Working Party, to develop an international system for classifying coal. This project was necessitated by the increased trade in coal among various nations following World War II. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed to cover the characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Different terms for describing similar or identical coals in each nation caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade. Experts from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, East Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Yugoslavia participated in various stages of the classification work. Walter A. Selvig was appointed by the Bureau of Mines as the technical expert to represent the United States because of his experience in developing and standardizing methods of analyzing and classifying American coals. He served on the Classification Working Party until his retirement from the Bureau of Mines early in 1956. Extensive laboratory work was done in connection with the classification studies at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.

"Bench-scale flotation tests play a major role in the geometallurgical process value chain. Despite their apparent simplicity, these tests pose pitfalls in terms of operation, as well as the interpretation and modelling of results. In this paper we highlight key aspects to consider in generating accurate and reproducible experimental results, and critically review some assumptions relating to the estimation of entrainment and froth recovery. We subsequently focus on first-order equations to model kinetics and propose a method that accounts more realistically for the decay in kinetics over the duration of a float, and the contributions of froth stability and hence mass pull. The method was applied to three case studies on platinum group metal (PGM) ores and matched or outperformed first-order, two-component models. Also, it allows for a deeper analysis of the integrity of the bench-scale flotation results. IntroductionGeometallurgy is a structured, multidisciplinary approach that integrates key data from the geological, mining, mineralogical, and metallurgical aspects of the value chain to construct spatial models of an ore deposit such that the overall economic benefit and sustainability of an operation can be optimized. Process geometallurgy is aimed primarily at enhancing metallurgical efficiency and plant throughput by the application of appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as supporting production planning and operational strategies to reduce the impact of highly variable ores. With flotation being the dominant concentrating process in the mineral value chain, the bench-scale flotation test is an important characterization tool – a relatively cheap, simple, and rapid way to obtain key information about the ore and its amenability to economic extraction of valuable minerals. This includes the evaluation of different ore types and the implications of mineralogical composition and texture for comminution and floatability, the effect of the grinding environment on the liberation of minerals, the electrochemical environment in the pulp (Bradshaw et al., 2006), the screening of reagents to improve floatability (Ekmekci et al., 2003), and the role of hydrodynamics in the recovery of valuables and the entrainment of gangue (Amini et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2016). It is also a critical tool in auditing the performance of a flotation plant by hot floats, paving the way for concept and feasibility studies and providing essential data on kinetics for the purposes of scale-up, optimization, and simulation of flotation circuits."

This report describes the design and implementation of UHF radio and closed-circuit television systems in the Black River room and pillar limestone mine near Butler, Pendleton County, Kentucky. Prior to designing the radio system, measurements of signal attenuation on 812 and 466 mHz were made in the slope tunnel and in the straight and level crosscuts in the mine. Two distributed antenna systems fed by two sets of base stations provide approximately 75o coverage of the mine. Passive reflectors are used for extending signals into intersecting crosscuts and two-way signal boosters will be used to extend signals to the perimeter and obstructed areas of the mine. Fourteen mine vehicles were equipped with mobile radios equipped with digital identification, alarm and status encoders. Fifteen portable transceivers also were used. Six closed-circuit television cameras provide surveillance of critical transfer points of the belt conveyor system, and the loading dock at the base of the slope and an ash disposal area in the mine. Two-way radio communication and closed-circuit television have saved considerable man. hours, increased production, reduced maintenance costs and enhanced safety. Innovative developments were the use of passive reflectors and two-way signal boosters for extending signals into intersecting crosscuts, development of lightweight signal margin measuring equipment, modifications of mobile digital encoders to automatically send status information from mine vehicles such as numbers of loads of ore delivered, hot engine, etc., and the use of CATV technology for multiplexing audio, digital and video signals onto coaxial cables from the surface to the mine.
