"IntroductionThe SABREX Blast Modelling Program was developed jointly by the companies of the ICI Explosives Group, of which C-I-L Inc. is a member. SABREX (Scientific Approach to Breaking Rock with Explosives) is a modular computer program which incorporates new technology with a number of tested programs that have been in use world wide.SABREX predicts the performance of blasts in terms of (I) fragment size and distribution; (2) muckpile profile and face velocity; (3) grade fracture; (4) collar breakage; (5) a rupture envelope which depicts crack penetration behind and beneath blastholes; and (6) a complete cost analysis including explosives, drilling and accessory costs. The predicted blast results are displayed as dynamic colour graphics and in tabular form.SABREX uses data on the detailed geometry of the drilled and loaded pattern, detonation characteristics of the explosives and the dynamic properties of the rock to generate blast predictions. SABREX blasting calculations take into account the effects that shock and quasi-static pressures exert on the rock around the blastholes. While physical effects occur very rapidly in rock blasting, it is possible to view and model the sequence of events as discrete sections.The program can be run on a microcomputer and is currently operated by C-I-L technical service staff in Canada for the use of drilling and blasting operators.Figure I is a diagram representing the modules of the program and associated technology that is used to complement the program.Any, or all, of the modules may be used in a particular study or blast optimization. Because the BOBCAT module of the SABREX program has been described in previous papers(7.8.9), this discussion will concentrate on the newer modules: CRACK, HEAVE, RUPTURE ENVELOPE and to a limited extent, KUZ-RAM, which present a more detailed picture of the blasting process.Each of these modules is discussed in terms of the information they offer the operator in analyzing the blast. Specific examples of recent usage in Canadian mining situations are included to illustrate the ability of the model to produce practical results that can assist in optimizing actual blasting operations or solving problems that do exist."

During an eight month period, January to August 1978, nine bore holes were drilled in the Mikonui River gravels. On account of two rebores required from near bottom, the number of bores is in effect 11. Just on 1300 feet were drilled with an average depth of 120 feet. Depth varied from 102 feet to 133 feet. Penetration on average per hole value, varied from 7.4 to 16.4 feet per day. Gold values were even more erratic. Drill rig used was the Keystone churn drill manufactured locally by the Dispatch Foundary. It is skid mounted and requires a crew of two persons.

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-All of these notices have been revised, and some of then have been more or less completely prepared, by me. To those which contain more particularly the expression of my personal feeling, my initials have been appended. The labor of preparing or editing these paragraphs has been in many respects both welcome and interesting, on the one hand, and sorrowful, on the other. In going through the list, I have repeatedly felt like one who, visiting the Morgue, suddenly comes upon the pale face of a dear friend, of whose death lie was not aware ; and, even when this fact was known to me, the work of recording it has brought upon me a flood of recollections, almost preventing the discharge of that official duty. The list for 1907 seems to me to he peculiarly sad, comprising, as it does, so many sudden deaths by violence or accident, so many veterans, removed too soon, and so many young men whose early departure impoverishes the future, even more than the present. Probably, this feeling on my part is largely due to the circumstance that the increased membership of the Institute necessarily in¬volves an increase of the annual death-list. Probably, also, it is connected with the circumstance that during the first years of the history of the Institute-say from 1871 to 1880-it was joined by men of all ages, and that the death-rate is consequently now above the average which would result from the normal annual addition, principally of young men. And finally, I must admit that, as one of the original members of the Institute, and practically connected with it for nearly thirty-seven years as Acting President, President or Secretary, I am peculiarly impressed and depressed by the successive deaths of those who were my associates in the years of its early struggles and triumphs. I do not wish to inflict upon my younger colleagues the melancholy reflections of an increasingly lonesome old man. In fact, my prevailing mood concerning the Institute is not at all melancholy, but triumphant and hopeful. If I may be permitted to preach at all, I would enforce, from the texts given below, a moral which many of them declare so forcibly as to preclude the necessity of expository enforcements-namely, the duty of every one of us, old or young, to give to his brethren, as he goes along, and without waiting for some future occasion for a comprehensive and monumental contribution to technical literature, the results of his observation and experience. The largest investment in mining equipment in Caterpillar?s history ? The F series mechanical and electrical drive trucks ? is rapidly advancing. Caterpillar showcased the 793F and 797F mechanical drive trucks and the 795F ac electric drive truck at MinExpo in 2008 and have continued testing since then. The 793F and the 797F have accumulated more than 75,000 hours of field testing and have proven their performance capabilities and their durability. The new Cat C175 engine that powers them has racked up 130,000 hours of field testing in mining trucks and more than 120,000 hours in power systems. Because of the success of these field-follow programs, the 793F is targeted to go into full production within a few months and the 797F late this year. Caterpillar engineers have been testing two 795F ac prototypes at the Tucson Proving Grounds in Arizona. The development program has provided input for the construction of a new 795F ac in Decatur, IL. The new truck recently shipped to a copper mine in North America where it will serve as the first field-follow 795F ac as it works at the mine. The 313-t- (345-st-) capacity 795F ac will enter a new size class for Caterpillar, and, as a result, the primary focus of the Caterpillar ac electric program has been on the 795F ac. The commercial launch date will be defined as the field-follow program progresses. ?It?s fitting that soon after producing the 50,000th Cat off-highway truck, we are now shipping our first ultra-class ac electric drive truck to a mine,? said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining. ?Our new trucks further solidify our position as the one manufacturer to provide unparalleled options and unmatched customer support.?

This report is intended as a reference for personnel interested in the computer anlaysis of coal-mine-electrical-power systems under either normal operating conditions or fault situations. The procedures developed for this purpose are described and implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Considerations for choosing a solution technique and a number of examples are included. Procedures described include the Newton-Raphson iterative technique for the analysis of normal operation as well as a non-iterative Z-bus technique for analysis of unbalanced or balanced faults. During program development, strict attention has been given to the inclusion of core and/or time saving techniques such that these algorithms may be implemented on small as well as large computers. Program languages include FORTRAN IV for batch processing applications and APL or BASIC for interactive applications.

Provide the mining industry with a simple, accurate and readily available means of measuring the gas flow from pipe outlets such as gob holes Approach The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to establish correction or method factors for anemometers when used to measure gas flow from pipe outlets. Using the Anemometer Anemometers are used by the mining industry to make air velocity measurements in mine entries. Although the instrument has no appreciable influence on the airstream in mine entries, especially since the cross-sectional area of an entry is much larger than the cross-section of the anemometer, correction or method factors are used to correct the center line anemometer velocity to average velocity. This adjustment is made because the air velocity in a mine entry is highest in the center and lower at the sides. Anemometers can be used to measure gas flow from small diameter pipe outlets; however, since the instrument diameter is much larger than one-sixth of the pipe diameter, it will influence the air-stream from these small outlets. Resulting velocity measurements are erroneously high by as much as 30 percent. Method factors must be applied to such anemometer measurements taken at pipe outlets. Through a research investigation the Bureau of Mines established a set of method factors for center-line anemometer readings taken at the discharge end of 4-to 8-inch diameter pipes. These method factors were combined with method factors which were developed by the National Coal Board of Great Britain for 12-to 30-inch diameter pipes. The anemometer was mounted on the end of a short rod and held against the pipe for support except on the 4-inch pipe where the instrument was started and stopped remotely to prevent hand interference with the air-stream during measurements. Method factors were determined by comparing the anemometer measurements at the pipe outlet to the true average airflow which was simultaneously determined upstream by venturi measurements. Consequently, a method factor is nothing more than the ratio of the true velocity to an anemometer measurement.

For the purposes of this discussion it is assumed that contributors should express the thoughts that arise from their personal experience. So wide is the range of mineral deposits, and so varied the methods employed in their discovery and development, that no two geologists are likely to have been impressed with the same applications of their science. The author's own personal experience has been, during recent years at least, very largely concerned with the broader aspects of the employment of scientific method and geological knowledge to the problems of exploration and exploitation, for the guidance of the general public and governmental authority rather than of mine executives and directors. The view-point thus reached is likely to differ in many respects from that of men who are much more intimately concerned with the mining problems of a single metal or a single mining field, and for this reason a statement may perhaps supplement those from others whose experience has been markedly different.It may well happen that, at some not distant date in the future, when systematic and comprehensive instruction in economic geology is embodied in the courses- prescribed for mining engineers during their years of training, the author's comments will be quitesuperfluous; but at the present time they appear to him to call for expression.The Need for Training of Mining Men in Economic Geology.Contact over a period of many years with mining men who have had different kinds of training and experience has been convincing that there is a general reluctance to acquire a full rational understanding of the geological factors involved in exploratory and developmental problems. The correction of this attitude is regarded as vital to the industry and it is necessary to insist that the outstanding requirement of the present day is the utilization of all branches of geological, investigation in the field and the laboratoryby men who have had systematic and specialized training in these matters. The science of geology is many-sided, but is, nevertheless, whole and essentially indivisible. No one can afford to disregard any fraction of its content 'or any of its methods of investigation.The greatest advances have been made in the understarnding of the occurrence of mineral deposits by those whose knowledge Qfbasal principles, has been soundest, whose endeavour has been to ascertain all their relationships in space and time, whose attention to detail of all kinds has been keenest, and at the same time, whose capability to distinguish between major and minor features has been most marked.With the passage of the years and the accumulation of data from many lands, it has been possible to build up a great body of information regarding the primary deposition and secondary alteration of mineral occurrences, which is of the utmost value in guiding thesearch for new deposits to take the place of those that become exhausted. "Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has prompted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believed would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units.The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendation are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many other problems, will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the most earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.Grateful acknowledgment is made of the helpful assistance rendered by R. E. Eckert of the accounting firm of Eckert, Degan, and Palmer of Easton, Pa., in compiling the charts and the explanatory text. He has brought to this work a wide knowledge of accountancy, supplemented by a background of direct contact with the slate industry, and his presence at the various conferences has been of great advantage in clearing up difficulties. In the past few years, much effort has been spent in elucidating the impact of diesel engines on the mine environment. This paper summarizes diesel fundamentals , exhaust emissions and typical tailpipe concentrations. Mine sampling results and an evaluation of exhaust treatment systems are discussed. A review of changes in pollutant concentrations between the tailpipe and the mine exit is made and suggestions are given to reduce operator exposure to diesel contaminants.

Gases and vapors given off by petroleum and its products have long been recognized as somewhat injurious, when inhaled in high enough concentrations. The petroleum industry has recognized these effects and has tried to minimize the possibility of employees encountering dangerous concentrations of the vapors. Petroleum gases and vapors have not, however, been considered as actively poisonous, in the sense that hydrocyanic (prussic) acid and phosgene are poisonous; men have been exposed to them repeatedly, and for long periods, without any marked ill effects. Light Mexican crude oil when first introduced into the United States for refining was handled in much the same way as was customary with other apparently similar crudes; but experience soon showed that some toxic substance escaped from the crude during production and transportation and in most of the refinery operations. After a preliminary investigation several of the larger companies decided that the gases from the petroleum were the source of trouble, and therefore took precautions, wherever possible, to protect the men from exposure to these gases. With the increasing use of Mexican crude, this problem has become important. The present report covers the work done on the subject by the Bureau of Mines and the Public Health Service under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute.

The scheduled power cuts of early 2008 were a disturbing reminder that South Africa needs to expand its power-generating capacity. Low-grade and discard coals, of which South Africa has much, are a source of energy and amenable to combustion in circulating fluidized beds (CFBs). Foster Wheeler (FW) has a long record in developing this technology in boilers. The technology is flexible in burning a variety of fuels; low-grade, high-ash coals, good quality bituminous and anthracite coals, and biomass and waste fuels have all been used. CFB boilers are efficient, reliable and can be designed to meet tight emission standards. In recent years once-through supercritical (OTSC) CFB technology has been developed. It enables the next stage in CFB development to proceed to a medium-scale (500 MWe) utility in such projects as Lagisza, which runs at a net efficiency of nearly 44%. Scaling the technology up to 800 MWe with a net efficiency of>45% is planned to be commercial during 2009. CFB technology can reduce CO2 emissions in the repowering of coal-fired and greenfield power plants. It does so through greater efficiencies and by co-combusting coal with biomass. FW has also developed CFB technology for the gasification of biomass, as, for example, in a pressurized gasifier to produce syngas, which can be used for the production of biodiesel, thereby reducing CO2 emissions from vehicles. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can potentially cut CO2 emissions in the generation of power from fossil fuels in the short term, provided that it gains public acceptance, that the required regulatory framework is created, and that emission-trading mechanisms or other incentives provide a solid return on the major investments required. Oxyfuel combustion is an option in CCS; Foster Wheeler is adapting its CFB combustion technology for oxy-fuel combustion to meet this challenge. It is developing Flexi-burn?, which enables a plant to be operated either with or without carbon capture. This paper describes the status of CFB technology in terms of boiler efficiency and fuel flexibility. It highlights the advantages of CFB technology for oxyfuel combustion, presents a development plan for Flexi-burn?, and discusses a pressurized gasifier for biodiesel applications.

Virtual Reality (VR) simulations are excellent tools for training, education, simulation of abnormal and dangerous conditions in mines and solving complex problems. Although the concept of VR has been around for nearly half a century, it has taken recent advances in hardware and software to bring this technology to within the budgetary reach of ordinary users and researchers. VR is now successfully being used in the minerals industry for: data visualization, accident reconstructions, simulation applications, risk analysis, hazard awareness and training. The Institute of Sustainable Minerals Industry, Advanced Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Research Group (SMI-VR) at the University of Queensland, established in late 2000, has been involved in developing VR applications for the minerals industry in conjunction with various research centres. This paper illustrates the benefits of using advanced computer graphics and VR techniques in the minerals industry with some examples of applications developed.

Manganese alloys are important raw materials for steelmaking. However, selective mining of high-grade manganese ore resources has resulted in a scarcity of these high-grade Mn ores (Mn: >42; Mn/Fe: >5). The present research work is carried out to explore a new smelting reduction process to produce high-Mn/Fe syntheticMn ore from low-grade ferruginous manganese ores. Representative samples of low-grade ores (Mn: 25–30%; Mn/Fe: ~1) were collected and smelting reduction studies were carried out using variable smelting power (20–30 kWh), carbon rate (10–20% of ore) and slag basicity (0.1–0.3) to produce high-MnO slag and manganese pig iron. Studies have shown that different-grade high-MnO slags (MnO: 38.57–58.24%; Mn/Fe: >15) and manganese pigs (Mn: 5.16–24%) can be produced at optimum process conditions. The high-MnO slag can be used as synthetic ore for the ferroalloy production process. The developed process is capable to effectively segregate the iron and manganese in the metal and slag, respectively. The optimum Mn and Fe separation (>95%) was achieved by smelting of 10 kg Mn ore batch in a 50-kVA electric arc furnace using 30 kWh smelting power and 0.16 kg of coke. The slag basicity was maintained at 0.3 and the optimum slag SiO2 was ~30%. The studies indicated that the upgrading of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores is a promising solution for achieving high-Mn/Fe-ratio synthetic ores for ferroalloy production. It can help the manganese alloy industry to overcome challenges associated with the scarcity of high-Mn/Fe-ratio Mn ores and efficient utilization of low-grade resources.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering)degree Identification of non-linear systems can be a daunting task and in the process industries the problem is complicated considerably by the presence of noise from various sources, non-stationarity of the data and intermittence, such as observed in particulate flows. Traditional methods, such as frequency analysis and linear model-ling do not handle these systems well. Similar problems arise with the application of non-linear theory developed over the last few decades, where much of the analysis depends on embedding of the data in a phase space or pseudophase space, since these methods were not originally designed to deal with noisy systems. In contrast, singular spectrum analysis is a method which can be used to identify structure and distinguish noise from important information in multivariate data, such as the trajectory matrices of time series measurements. It provides an orthogonal basis onto which the data can be transformed, so that components of the time series can be investigated individually. With Monte Carlo methods, the components can be compared with those from linear surrogate data in order to identify possibly non-linearities in the data. In this paper, this versatile technique is briefly explained and illustrated by means of case studies.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) became law April 5, 1944, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Federal Bureau of Mines. As part of this program, bulletins were published on pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and nil stifle.5 The. Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because anal gasification is prerequisite to either the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable collection of technical information in this form Will Ire valuable. The material will he presented in three parts. as follows I. United Stares Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Other Foreign Patents. Part I appeared in early 1960. Part II follows.

The 11th Annual Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) conference was held April10-12, 2002, in Montreal, Quebec. It consisted of a series of technical sessions. Each paper addressed the economic issues that are related to the changes that many people believe are now required in the mining industry. Some of the papers were directed at how the mining industry will handle the changes that will be required in its philosophy and operations management. Of equal importance was whether the industry possesses the toolkit necessary to effect these changes and emerge stronger from its challenges.

As the 2009 George Fox Conference neared its conclusion, Arthur Silber, project chief of the Mass Transit Tunnel (MTT) project was able to pull away from the constant buzzing of his Blackberry long enough to give a short presentation and a significant piece of news to the record 318 attendees at the Graduate Center, City University of New York regarding the MTT project. ?As the former administration (The Bush administration) was leaving office, we were told that Congress was notified of the FTA?a (Federal Transit Authority?s) intent to issue final design construction approval to us,? Silber said of recent advancements concerning the $7.2-billion dollar project. It will add passenger rail service from New Jersey to New York City as part of the Access to the Region?s Core project in the form of the Trans Hudson Express Tunnel (THE tunnel). ?That 10-day waiting period ended yesterday (Jan. 26).? In days leading up the Fox Conference, those involved in the tunneling industry, and the MTT in particular, had a lot to be optimistic about. The MTT received environ-mental approval on Jan. 14 (see page 9) and, with the acceptance of the final design, the multi-billion dollar project moved that much closer to a ground-breaking ceremony. So close, in fact, that before leaving his office for the conference, Silber posted the contract documents and plans for the Manhattan Tunnel project online at www.arctunnel.com (an indepth look at the project from Silber is on page 22). While many were interested in the progress of the project, Silber also spoke about the new plans for the cavern complex at the New York Penn Station expansion. The original plans called for two lines that would come into a large cavern complex with a north and south cavern to access the trains. After numerous core samples were taken from the streets of Manhattan, it was deter-mined that this design was not feasible and changes were made that will include a deeper cavern under Sixth Avenue, with 14-m (45-ft) of cover with a 30-m (96-ft) wide cavern that resides entirely under 34th Street. The cavern was also moved 20 m (60 ft) to the west to remain at least 61 m (200 ft) away from New York City Water Tunnel #1. The new design will include three-over-three track arrangement. The mezzanine will be 46 m (150 ft) below street level at 8th Ave, Silber said.

Detailed attention has been given to the properties of the nitrides. Preliminary studies on a number of other uranium compounds are reported. The figures of merit of the best materials so far examined are one-tenth of those necessary for a useful thermo-electric material. It is well known that the largest values of Z are achieved with semiconductors (1). The Bulli Seam, New South Wales, comprises medium to low volatile bituminous coal, generally of coking quality. It is worked over an area embracing 300 square miles.Variations in several factors are found.1. The seam is somewhat disturbed and dissected by various structural features.2. This structure, and present topography, have resulted in depths of cover from very shallow to approaching 2,000 ft in the presently worked areas.3. Wide variations of seam thickness occur.4. Gradations of rank occur from place to place.5. Variations in seam gas content and wide variations in seam gas composition are experienced.6. Variations in coal strength occur.These factors may contribute to the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena in mining exploitation.INTRODUCTIONThe Bulli Seam, the most extensively worked seam in Australia, is the uppermost seam of the Illawarra Coal Measures, which comprise the southern portion of the Sydney Coal Basin. Generally, the rank of the seam and its assemblage of types make it ideal for the production of hard metallurgical coke. The thickness and relatively flat dips render the seam suited to mechanized bord and pillar mining, and this method is used almost without exception. At the north-eastern corner of the field, stress and gas phenomena have occurred during mining.Various data have been assembled on physical, chemical and geological conditions of the seam which may influence the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena. This material is presented in an attempt to explain the location of such phenomena to date, and to enable variations in conditions to be considered when future possibilities are being assessed.
