The present communication reports the results obtained by applying different concentration methods, at laboratory level, to the black sands from Estado Bolivar, Venezuela, with the aim of obtaining an adequate ilmenitic concentrate for the subsequent chlorination process. Sizing analysis was performed and plasma emission spectroscopy method was used to determine the chemical composition. It was found that from the two hydrogravimetric methods used, the Humphrey spirals is much more effective than Wilfley tables, leading to a 85% recovery. The most convenient particle size group for these concentration methods was the one corresponding to ASTM 40-140 mesh. When magnetic concentration was applied to the concentrate, obtained as a product from Humphrey spiral, a recovery of ilmenite more than 90% was obtained in the first step. It has been shown that the ore would respond to the separation techniques employed, giving individual minerals: ilmenite, zircon and silica as concentration products.

A new process for extracting cadmium from the electric precipitated dust produced by ISP process was studied. A leaching rate of 89.1% of cadmium was attained by leaching the dust with NH3?H2O-(NH4)2SO4 system under the best leaching conditions: ratio of liquid to solid(l:s)=2.5, c(NH3):c(NH4+)=3:5, total concentration of ammonium and ammonia=8 mol?L-1, leaching time= 1.5h, temperature=35. The most troublesome impurity of lead could be deposited from the leached out solution automatically after put it static more than 15h when the total concentration of zinc and cadmium was up to 45gL-1 , and the final concentration of lead was 0.0047 gL-1, which meant 99% of it was removed. Metallic cadmium which contained cadmium more than 99% was prepared by electrowinning under the conditions: current density=750Am-2, total concentration of Cd2+ and Zn2+>25gL-1. The current efficiency was about 87% and the energy consumption for every ton of cadmium was about 548KWht-1. Main impurities of the metallic cadmium were copper and zinc and all of they could be got rid of in the following pyrometallurgical refining step.

A novel route for rapid synthesis of ultrafine WC-Co cemented carbides with homogeneous binder phase distribution is reported. The composite powder is produced by in situ reduction-carbonization reactions by using WO2.9, Co3O4 and carbon black as raw powders. The reaction equilibrium and phase stability are studied by thermodynamic calculations. The WC-Co composite powder is condensed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) to obtain the cemented carbides bulk. The sintering temperature is lower than that in the conventional sintering methods by 1500C, while the sintering time is remarkably reduced by 3-5 times. The high performances of the hardness and the fracture toughness are obtained. The experimental results confirm that the present processing scheme of in situ reduction-carbonization reactions and subsequent SPS sintering is an efficient way to prepare WC-Co cemented carbides, and is apparently superior to the conventional long-period techniques of preparing composite powder and cemented carbides bulk.

Zn-27% Al was pressure infiltrated into a column of 20 micron diameter abrasive grade SiC particles to give billets with particle loading of 50 voli.une %. Some billets were heated to a temperature where they became semi-solid and diluted with liquid Zn-27% Al alloy to give billets with particle loadings of 12 and 16 volume %. Some of these billets were then extruded into wire with an area reduction of approximately 98%. Tensile properties of the as-cast billets were always inferior to those of the matrix alloys; however, the extruded composite samples showed at 37% improvement in ultimate tensile strength compared to their extruded conventional counterparts. The fracture surfaces of these samples are described.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a process for the selective recovery of Pb metal from a mixed Pb-Zn concentrate. The concentrate was leached in recycled H2SiF6 at atmospheric pressure and 95° C with a redox potential of 570 mV (Eh). Eighty-five pct of the Pb was selectively leached from the concentrate while 87 pct of the Zn remained in the residue. Pressure leaching of the concentrate was slightly less successful, with 78 pct of the Pb leaching from the concentrate and 80 pct of the Zn remaining in the residue. Pure Pb metal was successfully electrowon from a purified PbSiF6-H2SiF6 solution with 96 pct current efficiency and 0.69-kW.h/kg energy consumption.

"Concentrated solar collectors including solar simulators have been studied to concentrate solar radiation to flux levels capable of reaching temperatures of 3000K. Currently, there are no industrial scale solar reactors used for material processing and only small research units have been tried. Various laboratory scale solar reactor designs are reviewed including their operating temperature and heat transfer efficiency. Solar reactor designs can be classed into directly or indirectly irradiated and single or double cavity construction. Thermal efficiencies of up to 40% have been achieved in experimental units while operating at 1500K. Problems are encountered that relate to the transfer of high heat flux. Hybrid reactor system should be considered in the future to overcome some of the practical issues associated with solar thermal reactors.I. INTRODUCTIONIn the high temperature processing of materials, such as the production of metals, cement, refractory or glass, the reactions are typically performed in the range of 500° to 2000°C. Metals are produced from minerals, which maybe oxides, sulphides, chlorides or silicates, and to recover the metals, these compounds have to undergo chemical reaction to liberate the metal. The thermodynamic stability of these compounds found in minerals necessitates the use of high temperatures to break down the bonds between the metals and other elements. Normally, the raw metals produced from smelting require refining, which is often carried out in the molten state. As new energy sources have been established, new furnace designs have evolved to incorporate the latest technology. Although solar energy has existed longer than all the current energy sources, it has not yet been incorporated into any industrial smelting; refining or melting processes. The solar radiation reaching the earth’s atmosphere, called the “Solar Constant” (SC), is defined as the rate at which solar energy is incident on a surface normal to the sun’s rays at the outer edge of the atmosphere when the earth is at its mean distance from the sun. The currently accepted value is 1367 W/m2 [1]. The earth intercepts only a small amount of this and 30% is reflected back into space, 47% is converted to low-temperature heat and reradiated into space and 23% powers the evaporative and precipitation cycle of the biosphere [2]. As a result, the solar energy reaching the earth’s surface is weakened considerably to about 1000 W/m2 or one sun, on a clear day and much lower on cloudy or smoggy days [3]. The thermodynamic limit for solar concentration is determined from the inverse square law [4] by the factor sin2? = 46,764 sun’s [5] where ? is the angular size of the sun and equals 0.0093 radians [7]. This would produce a steady state temperature equal to that of the sun’s surface of approximately 5800oC. In practice however much lower concentrations are achieved due to geometrical and optical imperfections, shading effects and tracking inaccuracies. Optical configurations based on parabolic-shaped mirrors are commercially available for large-scale collection and concentration of solar energy for the generation of electrical power. The most common configurations used for concentration of the sun’s energy in solar thermal applications are parabolic troughs, solar towers and parabolic dishes [8,9]."

The effect of lime ratio on phase composition and alumina leaching property of MgO-contained calcium aluminate clinker were investigated by analytical reagent, the XRD analysis of its mechanism was discussed. The results showed that: when the sintering temperature was 1350 ℃, C/A was 1.4, A/S was 1.3 and the content of MgO was 4%, the increase of the C/A promoted the formation of C12A7 and restrained the formation of Q-phase. The alumina-leaching ratio of the clinker (A/S was 1.3) was increased from 74.33% to 91.34% when the content of CaO was 5.21%.

Management of caustic red mud wastes at the QAL bauxite refinery uses an innovative approach . involving neutralising the red mud with seawater; solids settle in a Red Mud Dam and residual water (pH = 8.6) is discharged to a tidal inlet. A survey of 18 trace elements in sediment, water, mangroves and molluscs, and an ecological survey of benthic fauna in the inlet, and at near-pristine control sites, revealed no significant trends that were linked to the discharge, except for the concentration of Al which was slightly elevated within 100m of the outfall. Trace element concentrations in water samples were close to, or below, world average seawater values and oysters collected near the outfall were acceptable for human consumption. The impact of discharges is minimised by a high tidal range, >60% flushing of the inlet in each tidal cycle, and the very high trace element binding capacity of sediment in the dam (> 100meq/ 100g dry mud).

"The scraps of high quality steels generally contain expensive alloying elements such as chromium, vanadium, nickel, etc. These scraps are melted in an induction or an electric arc furnace and refined in ESR (Electroslag Remelting) purification process. A significant amount of alloying elements are lost during these processes. In order to avoid these losses, scraps can be utilized directly in ESR by skipping the melting step. In this study, 316L stainless steel scraps were refined in ESR with selected synthetic slags. The products were analyzed by optic emission spectrometry and the effects of slag compositions on the alloying element losses were examined. According to the analysis of the scrap and the products, generally chromium, nickel and manganese losses were encountered. It was determined that the alloying element losses has no connection with electrical conductivity. The slag containing CaF2, Al2O3, and FeO gives the optimum Cr and Ni losses.IntroductionElectroslag remelting (ESR), which is the consumable electrode refining process, finds a wide range of utilization for the production of high quality, low inclusion alloys. This process is based on melting a consumable electrode under a molten synthetic slag containing CaF2, Al2O3, CaO etc. The synthetic slag provides the chemical refining and insulation of molten metal from air which leads to a higher purity and an inclusion-free product. "Most industries attempted to conduct their energy consumptions in an optimized way for a few decades. This is because policymakers and top managements in industries have felt the critical situation of a possible energy shortage that could happen for them in the near future, even in countries with significant fossil fuel resources. Decisions related to energy consumption in any industry will have a long-term effect on different parts of the industry structure. In this way, energy decisions should be categorized as part of any industry's main strategic and long-term decisions, which should be made by top strategists. On the other hand, strategic management has many powerful tools to help the policymakers in industries to establish a long-term strategy for energy consumption and reducing or preferably eliminating the energy loss. This will be more important for industries in the Middle East, where they have just started to make an applicable strategy for their energy consumption and to design a long-term procedure for their energy management. Based on strategic management and by comparison we designed and offered a new model for establishing the main structure of energy management strategy in primary aluminum industry, which is a high consuming energy industry. This strategy, which we will call ESM (Energy Strategic Model) and has been applied for a typical primary aluminum industry in this paper, is similar to the practical models in the field of strategic management, which were developed for designing the overall company strategy.IntroductionThe elementary goal for introducing strategic management in any organization was to establish a successful plan helping the company to survive and to gain competitive advantage over its competitors in a rough business environment. Strategic management is an ongoing process that evaluates and controls the business and industries in which the company is involved; assesses its competitors and sets goals and strategies to meet all existing and potential competitors; and then reassesses each strategy annually to determine how it has been implemented and whether it has succeeded or needs replacement by a new strategy to meet changed circumstances, new technology, new competitors, and a new economic environment[!]."

This paper describes how a back-propagation neural network is built for predicting the properties of engineering materials from their other properties, compositions or processes. A predicted result of the impact toughness of a 12Cr-2Ni-1.5Mo stainless steel from its tempering temperature is presented. Furthermore, the combination of this neural network for prediction is able to supplement the unpredictability of the expert system outside its domain of expertise. An integrated system may perform more intelligently and solve more complex problems as well as human expert, in some case even better.

"The influence of electric current pulse (ECP) on the solidification structure of SUS430 ferritic stainless steel (FSS) was investigated in the current study. The technology of ECP has been widely used to improve the properties of metals with relatively low cost. The parallel electrodes were inserted into the free melt surface to constitute a current loop. The different influences of three parameters on solidification structure were studied by changing the peak current value, frequency and treating time respectively. The results indicated that the ECP significantly increased the number of equiaxed grains of SUS430 FSS. The as-cast structure without ECP treating was almost wholly columnar, while the number of equiaxed grains of the specimen, which was treated 3min with a peak current of 400kIA, increased to 2698 in the observed surface. To get the best refinement, an optimum range of these three parameters is required and the peak current value plays the most important role.IntroductionFor the lack of nickel resource and the pressure of environment protection, ferritic stainless steel is increasingly adopted to replace the austenite stainless steel because of its low nickel content and good mechanical properties. SUS430 steel is a typical example with excellent performance and relatively low price to replace the application of austenitic stainless steel[1-3]. This type of steel with high thermal conductivity coefficient, low expansion coefficient, good oxidation resistance, excellent stress corrosion resistance and other fantastic characteristics is often used to make components which need to have resistances for atmosphere, water, steam and oxidizing acid corrosion[4]. Since the developing of columnar grains and low toughness at high temperature, its products are easily crinkled and cracked during the subsequent rolling process[5]. The application of ferritic stainless steel is limited by these defects[6-8]."

TETRA Technologies, Inc., has applied its HDS? metals precipitation system to control a mine drainage problem. The effluent from the mine contains primarily zinc, manganese and iron, plus varying small amounts of cadmium, copper and lead. The flow from the mine averages 350 gpm, and varies considerably depending on season and weather conditions. The plant was designed to treat 1000 gpm of the water and generate a dense sludge suitable for recycling. The HDS? system contains a number of reactors, followed by post filtration and meets stringent metals discharge criteria as specified by New Source Performance Standards.

Near Rainbow Mountain in the east-central Alaska Range an ultramafic complex forms a sill-like intrusion composed of dismembered bodies exposed along the south side of the Denali Fault and Broxson Gulch Thrust. The complex comprises dunite and peridotite with lesser gabbro, which together exhibit poorly defined, steeply-dipping compositional layering. The complex hosts four types of copper-nickel occurrences which have characteristic platinum-group elements (PGE), gold, and cobalt distributions. Three of the occurrence-types are considered to have formed as a result of primary mineral segregations which developed during intrusion of the complex. The fourth type of copper-nickel occurrence formed as a result of post-magmatic hydrothermal fluids at intrusive contacts. Scanning electron microscope examination indicates that PGE occur as micron-size telluride and arsenide minerals.

This paper outlines the detrimental impact that unblended ore can have on the Ni and Co recoveries and the ore slurry density with real data from the Caron low-pressure ammonia leaching process for the Punta Gorda ore. The author briefly discusses the reason for the decrease in slurry density that the process experiences. The lower metal recoveries in the process that are caused by the unblended ore chemical characteristics and variations are shown with a data base statistical analysis drawn from the results obtained from a pilot test, designed with different ore bypassed from the normal process flow and a similar ore from a similar metallurgical treatment. A method of establishing the relationship between the mineralogy of a sinter and its subsequent processing behaviour in a lead blast furnace is demonstrated. It involves: 1) analyzing the Zn-spinels, hardystonite, larsenite, Pb-silicates, Pb-arsenates, Pb-(Ca)-sulphates and other femtes with an electron microprobe; 2) determining the extent of elemental substitutions in various mineral structures; 3) establishing a sequence in which the various phases formed during sintering. In this manner the relationship between the bulk chemistry of a sinter formulation and the speciation of elements into various phases in the sinter can be established. Specifically, the-substitution of Mg for Zn in hardystonite significantly influences sinter production. Mg substitution releases Zn into the surrounding matrix. This Zn reacts with the Pb-silicate to form larsenite thereby reducing the amount of Pb-silicate available for anhydrite digestion. Excessive amounts of residual anhydrite thus result if the sinter formulation is based solely on the CaO/Si& ratio.

"Commercial stainless steels (SUS304L and SUS430) were subjected to equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) at room temperature to a total strain of 2.3 to 9.2. For each type of stainless steel, it was shown that the sample processed by ECAE showed higher room temperature strength than the as-quenched sample. This is probably due to the heavily worked structure. On the other hand, both strength and elongation of the ECAE processed SUS430 were increased by annealing at 773K. It is likely that higher strength is attributed to both the heavily worked structure and fine substructures. It is also likely that higher elongation is attributed to the fine substructures. It is concluded that ECAE is available for improving the room temperature strength of commercial stainless steels.INTRODUCTIONEqual channel angular extrusion ( ECAE ) is a technique that provides the repetitive deformation and allows to high intensity of deformation. With this procedure, a sample is pressed through a channel that has an equal cross section but bent at an angle of ?> [1-2]. Shear strain is introduced when a sample passes through the bending point of the channel. Repetitive processing is feasible because the cross-sectional dimension of a sample has no change during processing. To date, many reports have described that ECAE is available for the fabrication of fine-grained materials [3-14]. On the other hand, an ECAE processed sample can achieve high intensity of deformation through repetitive deformation. According to the equation given by Segal [ 2 ], a strain of about 1 is introduced in each pass through die if the angle ? is 90 deg.It is well known that high tensile strength can be achieved in metallic materials through work hardening [15]. It is also known that metallic materials with fine grain size show high strength [16]. Hence, it is expected that ECAE is available for strengthening method in metallic materials. In the present paper, we will report the mechanical properties of stainless steels processed by ECAE. As samples, SUS304L austenite stainless steel and SUS430 ferritic stainless steel were chosen. Each alloy has a single-phase structure (fee or bee) and shows no phase transformation, so that transformation strengthening cannot be applied. Hence, a heavy cold work such as ECAE may be effective for strengthening of this stainless steel. Annealing was conducted for the ECAE processed SUS430 to vary its microstructure. Then, the effect of annealing on the strength of the ECAE processed SUS430 was also investigated."

Titanium-titanium boride whisker (TiBw) composites are emerging as strong candidate materials for advanced applications within the automotive, aerospace and defense industries. Although increasing TiBw volume fraction improves the specific stiffness and wear resistance of titanium, it is usually on the expense of fracture toughness and ductility especially at increased volume fractions of reinforcements where whiskers interlock. This research addresses strategies for microstructural design that may overcome these shortcomings, by generating titanium composites that are locally reinforced with TiBw through in-situ reaction in segregated regions of the microstructure and separated by ductile Ti matrix. The effect of varying composite reinforcement particle sizes (i.e. size of the reinforced regions) on the pressure-less sintering of these dual matrix composites is discussed. Electric current activation was also used to generate high density dual matrix composites and a new simultaneous imaging and modulus mapping technique was used to characterize these unique microstructures.

"The purpose of this paper is to study metal separation and recovery from a sample composed of a mixture of the spent household batteries main types, using liquid-liquid extraction and metals electroplating. The electrolytes preparation consisted: grinding the waste of mixed batteries, reduction and volatile metals elimination using electric furnace and acid leaching. From this solution were studied the liquid-liquid extraction using Cyanex 272 [bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphoric acid] with tributyl phosphate as extracting agent. After study of solvent extraction and stripping has been recover and separate the metallic ions and with electroplating was recovered the manganese, copper, nickel and cobalt in their metallic forms.IntroductionCurrently has increased the consumption of electronics devices such as mobile phones, laptops, wireless phones, comcorders, etc., especially portable devices that use batteries as a power source, and consequently has increased the disposal of such material.Increased consumption of this devices is caused by several factors including increased popularity of consumer electronics devices, has become essential of modem life. Therefore, recycling of batteries is important because its reduces the waste of raw materias and nonrenewable resouces used in manufacturing these materias and help prevent potential environmental risks associated with improper disposal of these products together with household garbage.The batteries have a very diverse composition, containing metals such as zinc, lithium, nickel, lead, mercury, cobalt, cadmium, iron, copper, manganese and rare earths. Some components may contain hazardous materials such as cadmium, mercury and lead, and can contain acids or bases.This research line is a pioneer in dealing with a single process for recycling a mixture with all batteries types, for only processes that exist in the world are based on the recycling a mixture with all types of batteries, for only processes that exist in the world are based on the recycling of one or two types of batteries [1-4]. This process necessitates the previous separation of the batteries by type."

"In this paper, the photochemical catalysis degradation effect of photocatalyst obtained by charcoal-supported nano TiO2 (nano TiO2 / charcoal) on the formaldehyde in the air was studied. The influences of the nano-TiO2 loading and the photoreactor structure on the efficiency of photochemical catalysis degradation of formaldehyde was reviewed.The nano - TiO2 / bamboo charcoal adsorption of formaldehyde, as well as the influences of a certain amount of formaldehyde after adsorption on its photochemical catalysis effect were discussed. The sol preparation process of Ce-doped nano-TiO2 was described. Experimental results indicated that: the surface of bamboo Charcoal still has a strong formaldehyde adsorption capacity after Supported by Nano TiO2.After adsorbing formaldehyde, the photochemical catalysis degradation efficiency of formaldehyde of the catalyst at a steady state is basically the same with new prepared catalysts’. When the thickness of the catalyst layer of the multi-ladder-type structure photoreactor is 2mm, the interval is 20mm, the absorption efficiency of formaldehyde of Nano- TiO2 / bamboo charcoal is the best . Nano-TiO2 undoped Ce responded with no degradation of formaldehyde after 2 hours, while the degradation rate of formaldehyde of the Ce-doped nano- TiO2 reached 15% 2 hours late, and the formaldehyde decontamination of the equipment reached 94%.IntroductionEmerging out of home decoration in the distribution of formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia and other indoor pollutants have been proved to be very harmful to the human body. Photocatalysis can eliminate air pollutants, in particular, can effectively degrade the air volatile organic compounds, it is a new method of air purification developed in recent years. the biggest advantage of photochemical catalysis degradation is green, this method can be available at normal temperature and pressure to degrade formaldehyde and other organic matter into carbon dioxide and water without secondary pollution.Nano-TiO2 have become the most studied photocatalyst due to its stable, non-toxic harmless, superior photochemical catalysis properties [1]. Initially nano-TiO2 powder was used as a photocatalyst, but it’s difficult to recover and easy to wear and tear [2,3]. Later, the TiO2 was used in the form of film loaded on some carriers, such as glass beads [4]. As the photochemical catalysis reaction occurred on the catalyst surface, only the organic matter adsorbed on the catalyst surface can be degraded, so the catalyst was requested that must have a strong adsorption. Combined the adsorption properties of bamboo charcoal and the photochemical catalysis activity of nano-TiO2 together. Made the photocatalyst by loading the nano-TiO2 on bamboo charcoal to degrade organic matter in the air. Nano-TiO2 semiconductor photocatalyst has a strong catalytic oxidation due to the photo generated hole of the surface [5,6],and has a potential application. Some studies have shown that nano-TiO2 photocatalysis activity can be increased by doping certain metal ions [7,8].The aim of our work in this study was to use bamboo charcoal load Ce-doped nano-TiO2 photochemical catalysis oxidation to degrade formaldehyde,and design a multi-ladder structure photoreactor, also prove the availability of the device from the theoretical and experimental."
