"In this paper, the mining experience and challenges for the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh seam are introduced. The longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence (up to 2 feet), accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded.Different underground instruments, such as a roof scope, de-gas drill, tell-tale, laser meter, and Borehole Pressure Cell (BPC), were employed to explore the roof geology and to monitor the entry convergence and the stress changes in the pillar. In addition, the impact of other geologic factors, such as large overburden depth, laminated sandstone roof geology, soft floor, and large headgate equipment, were also analyzed. Subsequently, geotechnical solutions were provided to avoid or mitigate the impact of these challenging geologic factors.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that high horizontal stress will affect the stability of roof, floor, and ribs within underground mines. In general, the headgate entries will experience stress concentration for the right-handed longwall face. On the contrary, the stress concentration will be in the tailgate entries for the left-handed longwall face (Hasenfus and Su, 2006). Without the stress shadow, the stress concentration in the headgate for the first longwall panel may be more significant (Figure 1).A mine in the CONSOL Pennsylvania Operation was extracting the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh seam, which created high horizontal stress concentrations at the longwall headgate. Because of concern over soft wet floor within the syncline, floor coal had been left in place on development. Early on, upon retreat, the longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence, accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The floor heave was exacerbated by the presence of floor coal, which buckled upward near the center of the beltline. Roof movement was occasionally aggravated by laminated roof conditions, but was kept in check by aggressive supplemental support including cable bolts, yielding props, cribbing, and roof mesh. Rib bolting and rib mesh helped to further maintain the entryway stability by keeping sloughage at a minimum. Nevertheless, despite the heavy support, headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded."

Based on the results of mathematical analysis, photoelastic modelling, and case studies, the mechanisms of longwall under- mining interaction has been thoroughly investigated. The effects of using yield pillars in combination with rigid pillars in lower seam mine design have been found to provide significant improvement in ground conditions during undermining. Off- setting of solemnized longwall panel entries relative to upper-seam remnant structures has proven to be effective in alleviating adverse stress conditions.

The San Juan Coal Mine, located near Farmington, New Mexico, supplies the San Juan Generating Station with more than 6 million tons of coal annually. To replace dwindling surface mine production, San Juan installed a longwall in 2002. The roof rock in much of the underground reserve consists of interbedded coals, carbonaceous shales, and mudstones. Roof support consists of fully-grouted roof bolts, both tensioned and non-tensioned, supplemented by modified cable trusses. Short-encapsulation pull tests conducted by San Juan's geotechnical engineering department showed that some of the immediate roof layers provided variable bolt anchorage. To ensure that the roof bolts were obtaining the necessary anchorage, additional tests were conducted in a variety of locations. The results have been used to determine the optimum support design for different areas of the mine. Another series of tests evaluated the performance of several bolt and hole diameter combinations. The experience at San Juan Mine shows that short-encapsulation pull tests can provide the information necessary to improve ground control in variable roof conditions. It also illustrates how a pro¬active geotechnical engineering program can be an essential component of a state of the art underground coal mine.

One of the major difficulties in the proper characterization of rocks surrounding excavations is the lack of data. The existing method for strength determination requires core drilling for sample collection, which, when performed from the surface is costly, and when performed underground, in addition to its cost, interferes with the mine operations. I-landling samples tested in the laboratory is troublesome and also influences the obtained results. Over several years. the author has been interested in developing a method of in situ strength determination that could rapidly generate strength data at low cost without a negative effect on mining activities. The recently developed borehole penetrometer is an improved version of the initial design ( 3 inches in diameter), which was used mainly for strength determination of coal pillars. The new penetrometer has been designed to work in 1.5 inch diameter holes. Such holes can be drilled at low cost with either hand held drilling machines or roof bolters. eliminating limitations of the previous system and opening the possibility of broad application. Strength testing of roof rock around longwall pillars is an example of an obvious benefit when designing secondary roof support. In the paper are given the principles of work of the apparatus and examples of the obtained strength data.

The 3-D numerical modeling using ABAQUS is performed to analyze the mechanisms of the tensioned bolts by taking into considerations excavation sequence, pre-tension, bedding planes and in-situ horizontal stresses. The effect of the pre-tension and the mechanisms of the tensioned bolts are analyzed based on the results from the modeling. Based on field observations, the failure modes for the tensioned bolted strata are classified by their causes and failure mechanisms. The support design consideration for each failure mode is given. Finally, a new design approach is proposed to do the tensioned bolting design using numerical method.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to assess the effectiveness of different chain pillar designs in maintaining gate entry stability. The study described in this paper was performed in a 1200 ft long, experimental headgate section which contained three pillar designs: - a three-entry, yield-abutment pillar' system, - a four-entry, yield-yield-abutment pillar system, and - a five-entry, all-yield pillar system. As the longwall mined by the experimental section, Bureau engineers monitored entry convergence, roof sag, and changes in roof quality. The results of the study indicate that the all-yield system performed at least as well as, and probably better than, the two abutment pillar systems.

This paper presents recent findings concerning longwall caving mechanisms relating to Australian mining conditions and their effect upon longwall support requirements and behaviour. The findings arc based on a program of intensive hydraulic support monitoring in a variety of Australian mining conditions coupled with geotechnical observations. Results from the study illustrate periodic weighting cycles of varying severity and these are related to the overlying geology in terms of the strength of individual strata units, their thickness and proximity to the longwall extraction. Several different caving mechanisms are identified which contribute to periodic weighting cycles. The importance of recognising weighting cycles in relation to the operation of the longwall face will be discussed in detail. Longwall support design methods are critically examined in relation to the case histories of the monitoring program. The applicability of the said design methods to Australian coal mining conditions is discussed and an outline of design considerations to facilitate productive longwalling is presented. Overall, the paper only "scratches the surface" of the work currently being undertaken by ACIRL in this area, and the findings of that work.

Currently longwall coal mining operations require at least 3 entries on both the headgate and tailgate ends because of ventilation and safety requirements. Driving of entries, however, is a slow and costly process. Often it is a bottleneck in longwall development. Single entry gateroads are permitted in Europe and commonly used there. This study entailed ascertaining the feasibility of using a single entry in the United States, without sacrificing safety. This design was conducted for an operating longwall mine in the Black Warrior coalfield in Alabama, An understanding of rock loads and consequent support requirements is prerequisite to the design and successful demonstration of the single entry system. Efforts in this regard were directed at determining center (packwall) support requirements for various single entry widths. Critical to the analysis is knowledge of the nature and extent of side abutment stresses. In collecting geological and geotechnical information relating to the stability of the single entry, Engineers International, Inc. engaged in the following: ? Examination and inspection of the single entry demonstration at the Sunnyside Mine in Utah. Severe ground conditions and unacceptable levels of entry closure were experienced there prior to the tailgate phase. Observations at the mine presented a clear perspective on possible ground control problems for future single entry designs. ? Reconnaissance inspection and classification of roof rock conditions. ? Detailed mapping of roof structure in the areas to be instrumented. ? Installation of convergence stations in the longwall headgate to monitor roof movement during mining. ? Measurement of side abutment stresses in a yield pillar in the area of the convergence measurements. ? Measurements of coal fracture distribution by the detail area method. ? Rock properties determinations of roof, coal, and floor rocks; samples obtained by core drilling. ? Determination of floor bearing capacity by in-situ testing.

Remote control roof bolting is approaching reality with the continued improvement of a number of components and subsystems being developed by The Bendix Corporation under sponsorship of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy. The era of remote control research in roof bolting was initiated by the USBM in June of 1973 with the award of a contract to Bendix Corporation to design and build a roof bolt bender/inserter device. One year later in June of 1974, the Bureau awarded five parallel R&D contracts to develop a longer-than-seam-height flexible roof drill. The Bendix flexible drill design has been the most successful of the five, has been thoroughly tested in both laboratory and underground situations, and has been incorporated into a number of machine applications along with the roof bolt inserter. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the advantages of remote control bolting from both a safety and productivity standpoint. Applications of the flexible drill and roof bolt inserter on a number of government and industry supported programs are used to illustrate the advances being made toward the goal of remote control.

Multiple seam mining and its associated problems are very serious in Southern West Virginia where poor planning or lack of knowledge in seam interaction often results in complete loss of coal properties. Several measures have been proposed to alleviate the interaction prob¬lems under various multiple seam conditions, but few of them are spec¬ific in terms of mining plan. Two parallel approaches are adopted for this paper. One is field investigation which consists mainly of mine site visits and gathering of data. The other is the two-dimensional finite element simulation of mine workings using the data gathered as input. Two typical cases which represent the past and present multi¬ple seam mining practice in West Virginia were investigated. Much attention is focused on the interaction problems experienced and the important parameters controlling interaction. Several key parameters controlling interaction in multiple seam mining were analyzed. Proper mining plans, by which the interaction problems can be minimized, are proposed for the individual cases after a better understanding of the interaction mechanism was realized through finite element analyses.

In order to investigate locations, source parameters, and source mechanisms of mining induced seismic events, a local network of seismic stations was installed at a coal mine in the eastern part of the Ruhr District (Germany). The recorded events were located with the help of an anisotropic velocity model, which accounts for the fine layering of the carboniferous strata. Most of the events took place about 50 m above the working Luise 76-10. Their locations correlated with the advancing working face, and the number of events increased when pillar edges were undercut. The source mechanism, i.e., the orientation of the fracture plane and the direction of displacement on this plane, could be determined for several seismic events. The majority of them was characterized by a fracture plane parallel to the working face and an almost vertical dislocation on this plane towards the goaf a mechanism resembling the breaking down of the hanging wall. The fracture plane had a dimension of about 100 m. Probably the fracturing of a sandstone layer, located approximately 40 m above seam Luise, was responsible for the observed seismicity

During the process of pillar extraction at the Welgedacht Colliery, an unexpected pillar collapse resulted in the entrapment of equipment. The area was visited soon after the event to evaluate the stability of the area for the purposes of extracting the equipment. It was found that the area had stabilised sufficiently to allow work without undue risk to the safety of workers. The equipment was reclaimed successfully. A subsequent investigation into the reasons for the collapse was conducted. It entailed detailed underground and surface subsidence observations and numerical modeling. It was found that none of the perceived negative factors that were present at the time could result in pillar loads that were sufficient to cause the collapse. It was concluded that the local pillar strengths were less than the nationally used value and that they were possibly further reduced by aging.

The unpredictable massive collapse of roof in openings developed under apparently safe and stable roof conditions in coal mines of the United States has been of much concern for many years. One type of massive caving phenomenon is often attributed to cutter roof, a failure that initiates at one and/or both upper corners of an entry and propagates nearly vertically resulting in overall failure with little or no warning. This paper reviews current methods being used to control cutter roof and suggests new alternatives. The impact of basic parameters that include mine geometry, overburden geology, rock properties, and in situ stress conditions is discussed in the context of their relationship to this problem. The effects of various stress control measures are investigated with model analysis to gain insight into means of reducing the high level of stress known to exist at the entry corners of a West Virginia coal mine prone to cutter roof. The results are presented in the paper and the feasibility of their practical implementation is discussed.

The propagation velocity of in-seam seismic (ISS ) waves depends on frequency which is also known as dispersion. This dispersion is not only determined by the thickness of the coal seam and its dirt hand content (i.e. thickness and position), but also by the rock type and its condition (soft or compact) above and below the coal. A coal panel completely surrounded by roadways was investigated using the in-seam seismic transmission survey technique. Along the roadways the immediate roof was either sandstone and shale- The seam thickness varied between 1.20 m (sandstone in the roof) and 1.40 m (shale in the roof) and a fault system (normal faults) crossed the panel with a total throw of about the seam thickness. Below this coal seam another coal scam with a thickness of about 80 cm exists. Its interval shown by exploratory drilling changes from about 60 cm to more than 6 m (scam splitting). Tomographic inversion was applied to the dispersion of the measured ISS waves and velocity distributions were calculated at frequencies found to he most sensitive to changes in the seam thickness and the distance to the coal seam below. By correlating the velocity distributions with known values along the roadways approximate distributions of the coal seam thickness and the seam splitting within the panel were produced. The mining of the coal panel had already been finished and comparison was made between the survey results and the actual situation as far as it was documented. Prediction by the seismic survey was partly in good agreement with the actual held conditions or showed at least the same trends.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a portable, lightweight device for determining the integrity of resin-grouted roof bolts. The instrument functions by sending a known pulse of ulstrasonic energy into the bolt and comparing the amount of energy reflected hack with the original measured pulse. Where the bolt is properly bonded or coupled with the rock, the energy passes through the bolt-resin-rock interface and dissipates in the rock. Where the bolt is not properly coupled, the energy is reflected back along the bolt to the instrument. The ratio of reflected energy to the pulse approximates the fraction of the bolt's surface that is improperly bonded. The instrument is easy to use. The operator holds the sensor head of the device firmly over the head of the bolt to be tested, causing the pulse of ultrasonic energy to be imparted to the bolt. The device then listens for reflected energy. This cycle is repeated about 200 times per second until an evaluation of the bolt installation is made and indicated by colored lights in the display window. Bolts having 50% or less of their surface bonded are considered had and cause a red light to he illuminated. Bolts with 50% to 75% of their surface bonded cause a yellow light to be lit and are considered marginal. Bolts having more than 75% of their surface bonded are considered good and cause a green light to be lit. The indicator lamp remains on for about 4 seconds and then goes off, indicating that the instrument is ready for another test.

Surface mining of multiple scams by mountaintop mining methodology is complex in the Appalachian region of West Virginia. Excess spoil from the removal of overburden and interburden is disposed in the adjacent valleys. The valley fills so formed are some of the largest earth constructions, with a relief of 450 ft (137 m) to 650 ft (198 m) and a stretch of 500 ft (152 m) to 2000 ft (610 m). The stability of the valley fills has become an issue of public concern. This paper describes three cases of valley fill slopes. The analysis of each case involved the description of the geo-mechanical properties of different surface and sub-surface layers, and the surface configuration of the slope. Slope stability was carried out using deterministic as well as probabilistic approaches. Based on the analysis, it was found that valley till slopes were stable due to configuration, and the premise that valley fills with great stretch and high volume of spoil tend to be unstable does not hold.

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigation was to characterize overburden response due to longwall mining. Subsurface strata and surface deformations were monitored at two sites in southeastern Ohio. Site A included two adjacent longwall panels. Site B consisted of one longwall panel. Both sites had similar mine geometries and overburden thicknesses. The major difference between the two sites was the rock strata within the overburden. Multipoint borehole extensometers (MPBX) were employed to measure subsurface displacements. Survey monuments were installed above the centerline and profile of each panel to measure surface deformations. Subsidence of the surface was observed before and after movement was detected in the MPBX units. Initial and final displacement of the MPBX units occurred at the same time at both sites. No deformation was detected outside the panel area. The development of overburden deformation was different over each panel. The final subsurface failure characteristics also varied between panels.

During the last 25 years, technological advancement and subsidence research have resulted in more accurate and diverse prediction capabilities. The work presented in this paper focuses on the development of integrated prediction capabilities for dynamic deformation indices and for strains over sloping terrain. In order to assist subsidence engineers with accurate prediction methodologies, the research also addresses the development and validation of techniques that can enable model calibration using alternative measured subsidence parameters such as horizontal or ground strain instead of the traditional vertical subsidence values. This paper presents the basic concepts and validation of the above mentioned enhanced prediction and control methodologies, which are necessary for effective assessment and control of mining-induced subsidence, using examples and case studies. In addition, a risk assessment approach for evaluating landscape stability over mined areas is presented. The enhanced prediction methodologies have been incorporated into the Surface Deformation Prediction Software (SDPS) package.

Floor heave or deformation of the mine floor into the mine opening is a problem which has plagued coal mines in this country and others. In mining areas where room and pillar mining is practiced, floor heave generally occurs when the stress applied to the floor material by a coal pillar exceeds the bearing capacity of the floor strata. When the floor strata beneath the coal pillar fail, the pillar moves downward and displaces the material under it. This material, in turn, moves outward and upward into the mine opening (Figure 1). As the underlying materials fail, the load supported by the coal pillar may be transferred to adjacent pillars. If these are marginally stable, they too may become overloaded and push into the floor. Thus, floor heave can spread through a large portion of the mine in a progressive manner. As the pillars push into the floor, differential movement and flexure of the roof strata may cause them to weaken and fail, resulting in subsidence of the ground surface above the mine. This paper describes the problem as it was manifested in the Zeigler Coal Company No. 5 and Murdock room and pillar coal mines near Murdock, Illinois, and reports the results of a U. S. Bureau of Mines- sponsored study conducted by the University of Missouri-Rolla. During the course of the study, floor heave in the two mines hindered the transportation of men, machines, and coal to and from the working mine-face, interrupted ventilation plans, drastically increased roadway maintenance costs, intensified safety and strata control problems, destroyed large pieces of equipment, and, several times, pre- vented access to otherwise minable coal resources. The ultimate objective of the study was to develop one or more simple procedures to allow detection of a potential floor heave problem during the exploration phase of mine design--before initiation of production mining.

The Bureau of Mines, through in-house and contract research, monitored mountain bump-prone areas of the Olga #2 Mine, near Welch, WV, using microseismic techniques for 15 months during 1985 and 1986. During this period, two ground failures occurred that were considered "mountain bumps" owing to excessive stress buildups. One failure damaged the roof and 4 pillars around an intersection; the second failure, which released much greater energy, resulted in significant damage to over 100 coal pillars. Analysis of the microseismic data collected provided significant insights into the magnitude and location of each failure. The actual failure zone was clearly delineated prior to the mountain bump occurrences through analysis of source locations of each microseismicevent. Trends in cumulative rate plots indicated the onset of structural instability. Although the data could not be analyzed automatically, the significance of the data interpretation cannot be overemphasized. Microseismic monitoring of bump-prone areas can be successful in providing a means to actually observe the structural stability occurring in underground coal mines. This paper discusses data collection techniques, analysis methods, and implications of the monitoring technique, with special emphasis on actual data from two large mountain bumps in West Virginia.
