Through a unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT) Center, a video packed, dazzling CD-ROM training program was developed for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Why this product was developed, and why the aggregate industry, will be discussed along with the challenges faced throughout the project. Cooperation from every one involved including MSHA made this the product of which all other training materials in the mining industry will be measured against in the 21st Century. This product's versatility and wide application makes it a tool that is as critical to a mine's success as any earth moving machine. Developed with both state and federal grant moneys allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

The Denali Prospect (147° 08' 20" W, 63° 08' 50" N) is located on the south flank of the Alaska Range in the Clearwater Mountains in south central Alaska. (See Figure 1). The mineralization was discovered in 1963 and surface explora¬tion began the following summer. Surface trenching and diamond drilling were used to locate and sample the mineralized zones. In 1969, an adit totalling approximately 1400 feet was completed. In 1970, a -15% grade decline approximately 1800 feet long was completed. Further diamond drilling was done along with both underground programs. Although much work remains to be done to properly evaluate the prospect, results from all the work to date are quite encouraging. This paper will consider the geology of the prospect and the surrounding area, some- aspects of the geochemistry of the sulfides, and the origin of the sulfide deposits. This paper includes data from this writer's Ph. D. dissertation, "Geology and Geochemistry of the Denali Prospect, Clearwater Mountains Alaska" from the University of Alaska and subsequent work.

Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Tree bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Restorable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below-mill-cut-off-grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyrite-bearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan?s mine in Morenci, Arizona. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation.

A new water treatment plant is to be constructed for a portion of the water supply system of New York City. The project includes construction of new water conveyance tunnels crossing perpendicular and sub-parallel to the existing pressurized water tunnel at two locations. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of new tunnel construction on stability of the existing tunnel and hydrojacking potential in the surrounding rock mass. This paper introduces a practical approach to evaluate tunnel interaction, expressed in terms of rock-liner interaction, stress-induced stability and hydrojacking failures. A simple method to evaluate hydraulic and mechanical properties of concrete liners and jointed rock mass is also presented.

A series of gas inrush events occurred during development at Grosvenor mine resulting in exposure to elevated levels of methane at the production face. A total of 22 gas inrush events occurred releasing between 15 and 130 m3 of methane during each event. The presence of an undrained seam in the immediate floor, geotechnical characteristics of the floor, and the stress environment all contributed to these dynamic floor events, while the geological characteristics of the seam below, such as the seam thickness and ash content of 75%, prevented effective pre-drainage. However, events only occurred in headings mined parallel to the principal horizontal stress direction. In cut-throughs (C/Ts) perpendicular to the principal stress direction, no events occurred, and higher methane levels were observed at the production face.

The Energy Act of 1992 has many users of ac-induction motors eyeing premium-efficiency motors with mixed feelings and perhaps some confusion. When the October 1997deadline arrives for compliance with the1992 standards, the winners will be the environment due to reduced need for more power generating plants and the petroleum economy because of reduced dependency on foreign oil. But what will it mean for industrial users? The most obvious benefit is the potential for smaller electricity bills. Motors account for about 64% of the electricity consumed in the United States, at a yearly cost of $112 billion. Every 1% reduction in motor demand cuts 0.64%, or $716 million, off the industry wide bill. Higher efficiency motors also run cooler. This lightens the load on air-conditioning systems and further reduces plant demand. Lower total demand can lead to lower rates by helping to minimize peak-demand surcharges. As rates increase over time, these savings get bigger.

AMAX Coal Company's Belle Ayr coal dryer is the first industry attempt to commercialize sub-bituminous coal drying which has been the subject of laboratory and pilot plant tests for almost two decades. This paper presents the historical background, construction, start-up and operation of this adaption of fluidized bed coal drying technology to Powder River Basin coal. The flowsheet and operational problems encountered during plant start-up are discussed together with general material balance and product quality.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

Strong demand for copper in developing nations such as China and India, plus the additional demand for industrial minerals to supply the Arizona construction market, brought about a record-setting year for the state?s mining industry. The value of Arizona?s copper production set a new high of $5.5 billion and pushed the total value of mineral production to $7.58 billion. This was also a record. As it has for many years, Arizona ranked first in nonfuel mineral production in the U.S. In addition to leading the nation in copper, Arizona ranked in the top five in molybdenum, sand and gravel, gemstones, perlite, silver, zeolites and pumice. Generally strong and rising prices, especially toward year?s end, fostered a bullish atmosphere that encouraged significant levels of acquisition and exploration. This activity has spread beyond the normal commodities to include some, such as manganese and fluorspar, that have not been mined in Arizona for decades.

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. When done properly, benchmarking is an extremely effective tool for assessing ones performance, finding areas for improvement, and identifying strengths. However, when done improperly it can be an exercise in futility and result in incorrect observations and conclusions. A primary pitfall of benchmarking is collecting too much unreliable information. Surprisingly, the evolution of data storage and the ease of data collection are not helping with better data collection. Instead, it is just allowing one to collect more information, while at the same time inundating one with too much data. Additionally, the process of data collection can be tedious and is often times delegated to the least experienced individual resulting in unreliable and incorrect data collection and entry. Another primary pitfall of benchmarking is metrics that are cost based or poorly designed. Cost based metrics typically involve comparing unit mining costs ($/tonne). Between mines, unit mining costs are not very well correlated and have become further complicated by significant regional cost variations and mining inflation in the last years. Likewise, poorly designed metrics lead to poor benchmarking results. Examples of poorly defined metrics include: metrics that rely on information that is difficult to collect, metrics that are poorly defined, metrics which are too site focused, and metrics that measure low consequence practices.

Since the dawn of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extraction. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. Over the next several years, the storage capacity of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago?s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan will be increased by 14.8 billion gallons through the addition of two large off-line reservoirs: the McCook and Thornton Reservoirs. The Thornton Reservoir will be constructed at the terminus of Calumet TARP System. The constructed TARP system will be connected to the Thornton Reservoir via connecting tunnels and gates systems. The connecting tunnels will comprise of: an upgradient transition tunnel, steel lined bifurcated tunnel for conveyance and control of flow, downdradient transition tunnel, and energy diffuser at tunnel portal. A large, approximately 250-foot-long, 69-foot-wide, and 40-foot-high, rock cavern will be excavated at an average depth of 320 feet to house the bifurcated tunnel system and associated six large control gates, each 12.5-ft by 28-ft wheel gate. Presented in this article are discussions about the TARP system, the Connecting Tunnels and gates Project, regional rock conditions, evaluation of reservoir?s wall stability for evaluation of tunnel penetration, and design challenges facing during design of the: rock cavern hosting the bifurcated tunnel system and gates and associated tunnels and shaft.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from high extraction mining in southern Illinois. The objectives of the monitoring program are to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a foundation during a subsidence event and to determine the capability of the tiltmeter to detect and monitor subsidence movements. Tiltmeter data were obtained on two foundations constructed near Sesser, IL. One of the 30-by 40- ft foundations was constructed with a typical poured concrete footing, the other with a rein- forced-concrete footing poured on top of pol yethylene sheeting placed over a compacted layer of sand. Soil-filled bins were placed on the perimeters of both foundations to simulate superstructure loads. Monitoring pins and tiltplates were installed on the corners and midpoints of the footing. Additional survey points were established on the five-acre site to track the mining advance. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tilt- meter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations is demonstrated.

Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut and with the intake air quantities varied using different auxiliary fans to control air recirculation and diesel particulate matter (DPM).

Until 1956, drill and blast was the only way to excavate rock. In that year, a tunneling machine using disc type cutters economically bored a small Toronto tunnel. Its amazing 105 ft/day set a new world record and set the stage for a new industry. The Disc Cutter Role in Excavation Mechanical excavation of hard rock is by now deeply ensconced in the heavy civil construction industry. All over the world, from the Swiss Alp Melange to Hong Kong Granite, to New York Gneiss, huge Tunneling Boring Machines (TBMs) create transportation, water and sewer tunnels. Powerful machines, boasting as much as 6000 hp, bore through rock, excavating in excess of 1400 tons per hour. The tool that makes this tunneling phenomenon possible is the single blade, rolling disc cutter. These hardened steel discs, from 15 1/2 to 19 inches diameter are arranged on a rotating cutterhead, to cut concentric circles in the rock. As the machine is propelled forward under great pressure, rock below each cutter is crushed. But the efficiency of the cutterhead is derived from the science of cutter spacing (distance between cutter paths). The majority of the rock excavated is not crushed, but flakes off in chips and chunks. No pick, tooth, or drag type cutting tool can duplicate the performance of a disc cutter. The economic use of drag type tools is limited to as low as 5,000 psi UCS rock strength in massive formations. In weakly bonded, foliated rock, drag tools do better, but are still limited to rock generally less than 15,000 psi.

The Owner Procurement Process or OPP is a proven, viable alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures major tunnel construction items such as tunnel boring machines and tunnel linings and provides them to a tunnel excavation contractor in order to manage risk and accelerate project schedule. However, due to industry perceptions regarding potential owner risk, it is seldom considered or is rejected out of hand. In fact, past performance demonstrates that the process significantly minimizes owner, contractor and over-all project risk and mitigates the impact of any claims and differing site conditions. The paper outlines how the process should be structured to achieve schedule, cost, quality and risk management benefits. Potential and perceived disadvantages are discussed and how the process can be structured to mitigate or avoid them. The planned implementation of this process on the tunnels for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California is discussed.
