Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

Due to the surge in shale gas production, a substantial number of unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled across U.S. coal reserves. Gas breaches resulting from damaged wells pose a considerable safety risk to miners. This paper investigates how a ventilation system can effectively manage breached gas through a network-based numerical model and laboratory-scaled physical model. Several hypothetical gas breach scenarios in a longwall area are simulated, exploring factors influencing gas mitigation. The study establishes correlations between breached gas inflow and gas concentration at critical locations. The findings in this study provide valuable insights for managing mine ventilation systems and enhancing coal miner safety.

Long-term closure alternative selection for heap leach pad effluent is a daunting task. Passive water treatment, if designed with enough long-term capacity, can minimize long term O&M while meeting water quality objectives. Leach pad effluent from a 30-acre leach pad at Basin Creek Mine, Basin, Montana was targeted for long-term water treatment using a passive water treatment system. The objectives and results of design and construction are: 1. Design a long-term passive system utilizing existing infrastructure. 2. Construct a field scale pilot test at the mine site.

The extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards (IVS) is scheduled for publication in the next edition of the IVS book in January 2005. This will provide guidance for valuation of minerals and petroleum industry assets of all types for all appraisal uses. It will provide asset valuation support to the International Financial Reporting Standards for the stock markets of the world, and a global umbrella standard which can be supplemented for local needs by institutes and regulators. This paper discusses implementation of the IVS within the minerals industry and important issues that the industry should confront.

Editor's note: The subject of mining on the moon can generate a wide range of strongly held opinion, from those leaning toward the view that, ultimately, such activity is the destiny of mankind to those who believe that all suggestions for moon mining to date are unrealistic, wildly expensive and in the hands of people who 'know nothing.' MINING ENGINEERING herewith publishes some of the basic pros and cons on the subject of moon mining by writers who are among those holding strong views on the subject, with the hope that some of our readers may be interested in joining this debate. Every mineralogist and most mineral industry people were keenly interested in the examinations of the first moon rocks brought back by US astronauts in 1969. Suffice to say that the examinations revealed nothing exotic in the mineral makeup of the very limited rock samples. The rocks were generally of igneous type, dark-colored and contained some common, Earth-type minerals. There was, in Earth terms, above average TiO2 content, but they contained nothing of commercial significance by Earth standards. Therefore, interest in moon minerals rapidly faded. Years later, on Sunday, May 4, 1986, living in Reno, NV, this author was shocked to read a local newspaper article by the Dean of the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, headlined, "Moon Mining Not Far Off." Emphasizing the concept of solving a system of n equations in n unknowns, this paper presents the generalized problem formulation, some conditions under which the problem does not have a unique solution, and a solution procedure based on the Newton (or Newton-Raphson) method. A numerical example is included.

Manganese (Mn) ferroalloys are chiefly consumed in the steelmaking process as a deoxidizing agent or as an alloying element to produce high-quality steels. These alloys are typically produced in a submerged arc furnace using coke, fluxes and manganese ores of a specific manganese/Fe (Mn/Fe) ratio. Preferred-grade manganese ores should have Mn content greater than 46 percent and Mn/Fe content greater than 5 to produce commercial-grade, high-carbon ferromanganese [1]. Selective mining of high-grade Mn resources has created a scarcity of these resources, which is emerging as a major challenge for the manganese and steel industry. Manganese ore resources are mainly distributed in South Africa, with about 32 percent; Ukraine, with about 17 percent; Australia, with about 17 percent; and Brazil, India, China, Gabon and Mexico, with lesser amounts.

It is well known that manganiferous silver ores containing manganese intimately associated with silver are not amenable to conventional extraction methods. The segregation process has been applied primarily for recovering copper from oxidized and oxide-sulfide ores. A new alternative process combining segregation roasting followed by flotation to recover silver from refractory manganiferous silver ores, was studied using a 23 factorial experimental design. Laboratory investigations have been conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02% copper, 0.09% lead, 0.33% zinc, 12.55% manganese and 187 g/ton silver to study the effects of additives salt, coke and copper oxide on silver recovery. Results indicate that 79.3% silver recovery can be attained in the absence of copper oxide and 88.4% when the copper oxide content is 1.5% at '750°C, 2% salt and 1% coke and 30 minutes of roasting time. It was concluded that doping with copper oxide improves silver recovery.

With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the very fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive but it leads to greater losses in 'slimes'. In the early 1970's, 50% of the tin mined in Bolivia, 30% of the phosphate mined in Florida and 20% of the world's tungsten were lost in this way (Somasundaran, 1979). Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25-50µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Two approaches can be adopted to try to overcome this problem. The first involves increasing the efficiency of existing equipment or developing new slimes treatment processes. Gravity devices such as the Bartles-Mozley concentrator have been developed for this purpose and good recovery has been reported from 100µm down to 5µm. Such machines, however, have relatively low throughputs, so that large areas of plant space are generally required. Flotation is rapidly growing in importance for the treatment of ultra-fine minerals traditionally treated by gravity concentration.

To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

Field data combined with theoretical derivations were used to design a surface mining operation using explosive casting. Calculated casting results varied from 44 to 65% depending on bench height. This model was then applied to field tests at an eastern, contour, coal stripping operation. Results from five experimental casting shots are summarized and compared to conventional mining methods. The overburden material removed by casting ranged from 35 to 65% with an average of 50%. Fragmentation was improved and it was demonstrated that this procedure is economically attractive with a resultant cost savings of $.59/m3 or $5.93/t of clean coal.

We performed numerical modeling studies to investigate water seepage into underground openings excavated in unsaturated fractured rock. Water seepage is a key factor affecting the performance of a nuclear waste repository such as the one proposed at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The amount of water dripping into an underground opening depends on the connectivity and permeability of the fracture network as well as on the capillarity of individual fractures intersecting the opening. We developed a high-resolution numerical model of an unsaturated fracture network and examined the appropriateness of seepage predictions using a fracture-continuum model. Model calibrations to liquid-release tests performed at Yucca Mountain are also discussed.

Many minerals float best with fatty acids in the intermediate pH range. For example, fluorite, a semi soluble salt mineral, exhibits a maximum contact angle and a maximum flotation recovery in the pH range of 6-8 after conditioning in a palmitate solution (fig. 1). The maximum in flotation coincides roughly, as many researchers have observed, with the boundary of bulk precipitation of the fatty acid. According to fig. Z this boundary is in the above case of 5xl0-7 M palmitate approximately at pH 6.3. For assessing the phenomena occurring at the bulk precipitation boundary of fatty acids, the surface tensions of carboxylate solutions have been measured under various conditions. Fig. 3 shows the surface tension development of palmitate and myristate solutions of increasing concentration at pH 12. Also shown are the bulk precipitation edges (BPE) of the respective solid species that is stable under these conditions, that is the potassium acid soap, HKAZ. Both curves display a similar behavior. As the concentration of carboxylat,e increases, the surface tension decreases, until a minimum is reached at which the curves level off. The decrease of surface tension with increasing carboxylate concentration is generally taken to indicate the surface excess of the carboxylate ion. The point where the curve suddenly levels off has not yet been explained. While it is well known that the onset of micellization (CMC) may cause such an inflexion of the surface tension curve, this cannot be the case here because the position of this point depends, as shown in fig. 4 for palmitate, on pH (the CMC is generally independent of pH). We believe that this point indicates the precipitation of a colloidal acid soap (colloidal precipitation edge, CPE) before the bulk precipitation of this species sets in (BPE).

"An acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2•4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4•H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 hours with a sulfuric acid-toconcentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different concentrations. The purpose of this paper is to present our examination of the effects of sulfuric acid dosage on the extractions of Cu, Fe, and As from an enargite concentrate. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.IntroductionThe occurrence of enargite (Cu3AsS4) in copper ores and concentrates and the associated high arsenic values in such resources have resulted in a considerable decrease in the demand for such concentrates because they cannot be economically processed using conventional technologies such as smelting and atmospheric leaching (Mihajlovic et al., 2011). The exploitation of such problematic deposits through competitive treatment strategies will be required in the near future in order to satisfy increasing pressure from the copper market. It is expected that the average arsenic grade of copper concentrates will increase from 0.17% in 2008 to 0.22% by 2020 (Mayhew et al., 2011).The acid bake-leach process was identified and selected for further investigation at the University of Utah as a possible process alternative for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this case, adequate amounts of concentrated sulfuric acid are mixed with the concentrate and heated to the temperature range 150-300°C. Subsequently, the baked material is leached with water/weak acid and the acid bake-leach process has some advantages over conventional sulfuric acid leaching (Prater et al., 1970). During water leaching, metal sulfates are released in solution, after which they can be extracted through well-known hydrometallurgical techniques. While the majority of the work has been done on oxide minerals, there is a limited record of sulfuric acid baking of sulfides."

The introduction of computer technology to the mining industry has produced many benefits for the mining engineer. The most significant is the dramatic increase in productivity realized by the individual user. This is important during times of competitive market conditions. Software for the minerals and energy industries has evolved substantially over the past decade. But even today it remains difficult to find a system that features the flexibility and integration capabilities to effectively (and cost-effectively) handle the needs of professionals in each phase of the mining industry - from exploration to reclamation. Several national software developers are now addressing this challenge. One Denver-based company, MINEsoft Ltd., offers a software package that is currently being used in each phase of the mining industry. The basic technology used in MINEsoft&apos;s database management system was developed in the 1960s. But during these early years of the computer industry, most of the technology was available only on mainframe computers, and then only as separate entities. MINEsoft&apos;s system unifies these various systems in one package that can be used on most computers manufactured today. Database Management System TECHBASE is a flexible, integrated database management system designed specifically for technical applications. The system features a database manager with no practical limit to the amount of data it can store, retrieve, and manipulate, according to the company. TECHBASE in¬cludes Applications Packages (TAPs) designed to meet the needs of professionals in a host of industries. Clients use the TECH BASE system to prepare many reports, including important EPA information. The package reduces data to a manageable level and enables users to increase productivity with a smaller staff. Mining engineers no longer need to do things by hand. What used to be a day&apos;s work can be accomplished in an hour or two. Exploration "Using the TECHBASE system to generate maps has probably saved us the expense of three or four draftsmen," says Ralph Fitch, regional manager and senior staff geologist with Chevron Resources in Portland, ME. "The system has great flexibility. You can treat it much like a spreadsheet. If you are halfway through with a particular project, the system allows you to add fields and calculations with ease but without starting over." Fitch uses TECHBASE for the "straightforward" plotting of results and generation of geochemical and geophysical profiles. "In exploration," he says, "these are the two key elements ... the generation of maps and data profiles. The system allows you to plot as many elements and variables in these areas that you like." Other aspects are important, too, says Fitch, including drill hole sections. "We use all the basic capabilities the system provides in the complete package," he explains. The International Tunnelling and Under-ground Space Association (ITA) is a nonprofit organization that represents all aspects of the tunneling and underground space industry worldwide. The United States has had a prominent role in ITA since its 1974 inception. ITA was formed as a result of a worldwide survey conducted in the early 1970s by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Bill Lucke was in charge of tunnels for the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration and was a member of the organizing committee that created ITA. He became a vice president of ITA. Jack Lemley served as President of ITA from 1983 to 1986. Dick Robbins was very active in ITA and served for many years both as a member of the Executive Council and as First Vice President. Harvey Parker has served as President of ITA for the last three years and will serve as Past President for the next three years. Moreover, there are many individuals and companies from the United States that have contributed significantly to the activities and the success of ITA. There have been several active Working Group Animateurs from the U.S. and there have been significant contributions from many individuals as well as companies from the U.S. Several engineers from the U.S. are currently serving ITA in a leadership role. The Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME) is the official organization representing the U.S.. SME Executive. [ ] Director Dave Kanagy and UCA President Tom Peyton were instrumental in the U.S.?s role at ITA during the last few years. Peyton has been the official delegate to ITA. Henry Russell and Christian Ingerslev are both Animateurs of ITA working groups. This article will introduce ITA and its activities. A subsequent article will describe the ITA in more detail and will discuss the significant role the U.S. has played in the development and success of ITA.

Many coal mining companies have potential surface mine reserves which either are known or suspected to have had prior drift mining activity on them. In many cases, there is no documentation on these mines or at best, very fragmented records. These undocumented abandoned underground mines are creating engineering, financial, and environmental difficulties and concerns for both surface coal mine operators and regulatory personnel. This paper examines the use of resistivity techniques in detecting entries of abandoned drift coal mines. The detection of such a drift mine entry would confirm the presence and orientation of an abandoned underground coal mine.

EASTERN COAL CORPORATION is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountain area of extreme Eastern Kentucky, The mountains are of sedimentary origin, and have been deeply eroded by streams as the area has been thrust up during geologic time. There are many seams of coal interspersed between beds of shale and sandstone. While some of the seams are thin, there are a number that can be economically mined. We are mining the Pond Creek, or No. 2 Gas Seam, at a rate in excess of 6,000 tons per day. Our central preparation plant utilizes tromp baths for the plus 3/8" size and Rheolaveur for the minus 3/8" portion. No provision was made to recover the fine coal, which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12 acre refuse pond. The pond is impounded behind the coarse refuse dump. This pond rose 15 feet last year. Obviously, no pond could stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method. Our first thought was that it would be necessary to dry the fine refuse sufficiently to permit inclusion with the coarse refuse, which is hauled uphill by monitor and then trucked to final disposal.

The ability to accurately model the movement of grade boundaries during a typical bench blast would be of significant benefit to mine operators. The movement of grade boundaries during the blasting process may have significant impact on grade recovery if not accounted for. The paper describes the preliminary stages of a research project which combines numerical blast models and conventional mine planning software to allow practical use of the results of a numerical blast simulation. A two dimensional bench blast is simulated using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). The results of the simulation are used to provide input to the Surpac mine planning package which can be used to generate grade control plans.
