A conveyor belt fire presents a serious safety hazard in an underground coal mine. A review of underground coal mine fires involving conveyor belts which occurred within the past two decades was made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Belt fires that occurred during this period of time have burned as much as 610 m of belting before the fire was extinguished. In an effort to improve safety, MSHA has undertaken a program to study the flammability of conveyor belts in large and small-scale tests. Large-scale tests were conducted on various types of mine conveyor belts using a range of airflows from 0 to 6.1 m/s. Data were obtained to evaluate the effect of airflow on flame spread and other combustion properties of the conveyor belts. The results from the large-scale tests were utilized to develop a new MSHA laboratory-scale test for evaluating the flame resistance of conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. Agreement of results based on a pass/fail criterion was obtained between the large-scale test and new laboratory-scale test. A summary of test results from the new test is shown for different conveyor belt formulations. MSHA also performed a series of fire tests with wood samples using the new laboratory-scale tunnel apparatus. These tests were conducted at airflows from 0.5 to 5.1 m/s to determine the effect on flame spread and burn damage. The data were also analyzed to determine if wood could be used as a calibration standard. The results indicate the flame spread behavior of the wood follows trends similar to results obtained with conveyor belts. The data did not show the precision needed to use wood as a calibration standard. MSHA intends through rulemaking procedures to replace the "20g" conveyor belt acceptance test with the new laboratory-scale test. MSHA also plans to implement a voluntary acceptance program. Under this program, a. conveyor belt manufacturer could obtain an MSHA acceptance for belts meeting the new test criterion. A belt accepted under the voluntary program could then be used underground. Use of conveyor belts meeting the new test would limit the propagation of fire and reduce the probability of igniting other combustibles in the belt entry.

February 2, 1999 marks a milestone in earth-moving technology at the San Miguel Lignite Mine. It was on that date that The North American Coal Corporation (NAC) took delivery of three Leica Dozer 2000 GPS grade control systems for use on its bulldozers. The primary reason for the purchase of these grade control systems was to prove that GPS technology could safely and economically be utilized on heavy equipment to assist operators in defining grades. If these properties were successfully demonstrated, the ultimate vision of the project was to expand the system to a point were GPS would become the primary means of providing grade control information to the mine’s heavy equipment operators. Twenty nine months and more than $500,000 later this vision was realized when the final bulldozer operating at the San Miguel Lignite Mine was equipped with Dozer 2000. Presently North American Coal has a total of nine Dozer 2000 GPS grade control systems at San Miguel providing cut and fill information to operators 24 hours a day. These grade control systems have allowed the San Miguel operation to increase safety, reduce costs, improve operator attitude, and better ensure environmental compliance. This article discusses both the nature of these benefits and some of the issues that had to be dealt with along the way.

The mining industry continues to underpin the regional economy. Australia, benefiting from a weak currency, receives 27% of the total goods export value from non-energy mining lead by aluminium, iron ore, gold and nickel. Consolidation has eliminated CRA, Comalco, North, Savage, Acacia, Ashton, Great Central, Aberfoyle, Placer Pacific, Plutonic, Normandy and RGC leaving Rio Tinto, BHP-Billiton, WMC, MIM and, increasingly, the South African companies Anglo, Gold Fields and Harmony as dominant players. Exploration stagnates with expenditure dropping 40% in Australia and 80% in PNG from peak levels. Major new regional developments include Rio’s West Angles iron ore project, Newcrest’s Ridgeway gold-copper mine and Inco’s Goro nickel-cobalt project in New Caledonia.

Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which present an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current research study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders’ evaluations. The economics of precious metals -- depending upon who is involved --could be the economics of hope, of fear, indeed of profit and perhaps survival. For those investors seeking capital gains in a puzzling economy, precious metals involve the economics of hope. Those who are convinced that currency soon won't be worth the paper it's printed on turn to precious metals because of the economics of fear. Gold and silver have been a storehouse of wealth since biblical times. The economics of fear during the past 500 years on the Continent has caused almost every European family to make sure a private stockpile or hoard of gold, silver or coins is at hand in case the paper currency of their country undergoes the kind of disaster that came to the German Mark after World War I. Understandably, for mining companies involved in the production of precious metals, the elements of operations and management are directly concerned with the economics of profit -- and perhaps survival. To the American miner the price of precious metals in the marketplace is a matter of daily concern. After decades of selling silver to the US Government at 64.64 cents an ounce, producing silver mines suddenly became faced with prices breaking $5, $10 and $20 per ounce, and approaching $50 an ounce during the period 1978-1981. What should the miner expect one year in the future? Five years?

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. The need/wish to sequestrate CO2is based on the assumption of the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), that CO2 maybe the major driver in climatic changes, i.e. especially the anthropogenic CO2emissions due to the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas will increase the atmospheric CO2-content, which will lead to higher temperatures in the atmosphere. The 0.03% CO2in the atmosphere have a 22% share of the natural greenhouse gas effect of 33 K necessary for life on earth. The main share of 62% has the water vapour in the atmosphere. Only if one concentrates on the greenhouse gas effect of the gases beside water vapour, CO2 becomes most important with 58% influence. In addition there are other influences on the climate like: • Eccentricity of earth’s orbit, precession of orbital plane, obliquity and precession of earth’s rotation axis (Milankovitch’s theory) • Sunspots and magnetic field of the sun • Changing streams in the ocean • Volcanic activities • Distribution of continents on the surface of the earth • Impact of meteorites • Change of insulation by interplanetary dust [Muller, R.A. 2000] etc. To answer the question, if the CO2-content in the atmosphere has an important or exclusive influence on the earth atmospheric mean surface temperature, one should look into history. Figure 1shows the mean temperature of the atmosphere and the atmospheric CO2-content time histories 1 billion years back; no correlation can be found between them. Nevertheless a lot of countries have committed themselves to reduce their CO2-emissions.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. Although several studies in combining and bifurcating flows in two-way junctions and splits are reported, deviations persist in the estimated shock loss coefficients (SLCs). Due to their complex nature, more work has to be done to be able to correctly predict flow losses at these locations. In two-way splits, the flow at bifurcation is known to be characterized mainly by two recirculating zones in the downstream branches, whereas, in a junction one recirculating zone is observed immediately downstream of the main branch. The relative flow rate in the branches (quantity ratios) is treated as the only parameter defining the losses at these locations. However, the effect of wall roughness, if any, on SLCs becomes important for mine ventilation. This paper presents the critical determinants of shock losses at splits and junctions at varying quantity ratios. The flow at 90º split and junction was examined both experimentally and numerically for Reynolds number in the range of 1.0×104 to 1.6×105. With a well designed laboratory setup, using precision instruments, velocity and pressure measurements were carried out, by using two scales of wall roughness. 3D numerical simulations for these experiments were conducted by using ANSYS CFX modeling tool. CFD simulations yielded results that are reasonably close to experiments, providing high degree of satisfaction in numerically predicting losses across the splits and junctions. However, comparisons of these numerical simulation results with existing literature standards showed significant under-estimation of shock losses by the standard literature by as much as 50%. A clear rise in the magnitude of shock losses was noted in both the approaches, with increased wall roughness. Based on the current studies, predictor equations incorporating quantity ratios are developed for accurate estimation of shock losses. Further investigations on roughness are needed, before one is able to incorporate wall roughness into the prediction of SLC.

Sources of sulfur have varied based on technology and societal needs. It has been mined in its elemental form for centuries. Twentieth century technology brought thermal mining (Frasch, 1894) to the forefront of sulfur extraction. Then, by the 1980s, petroleum processing generated almost 40 percent of the 50 Mt (55million st) of sulfur in all forms (SAF) produced in the world. Metals processing (the reclamation of effluent gas by various means as “sulfur in other forms,” or SOF) followed at 30 percent of all sulfur values produced and then Frasch at 22 percent. Petroleum and gas processing now generate most of the elemental sulfur produced in the world. Single Two Frasch mines remain, one each in Iraq and Poland. Conventional mining of small to insignificant volumes also survives in Russia, Latin America and Indonesia. The volume of “recovered” sulfur (the name commonly given by the industry to hydrocarbon-derived material) generated will increase faster than energy consumption as oil and gas with greater amounts of sulfur are used and environmental restrictions on the sulfur content of the fuel consumed become more stringent.

Continuing analysis of environmental samples for asbestos content has resulted in the misidentification of non-asbestos amphibole particles as asbestos fibers. These errors have received wide publicity (such as in the asbestos-in-crayon story) and have caused unnecessary reformulation of products. The primary cause of these errors has been a poor understanding of mineralogy and analytical techniques among the many asbestos laboratories that arose following the passage of the AHERA regulations. Presented here is a procedure based on published data that can be used to correctly classify an elongated particle as asbestos or as non-asbestos.

President Bush’s National Energy Program and his Clear Skies Initiative both emphasize the use of coal to help meet the nation’s growing energy needs. And why not? Coal is currently responsible for more than 50 percent of the nation’s electricity generation. That fact, though, seems to be lost on policy makers, the environmental community and the public. Critics of coal advocate the increased use of renewable energy sources and the increased use of natural gas. Renewables, though, are only capable of generating a tiny fraction of the power required. Natural gas is expensive. And natural gas production cannot keep up with demand, especially given the nation’s increasing energy needs.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

"THE MINES OF THE FUTURE The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising as global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yes, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption, and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security, and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is indeed precarious, and the mining community is necessarily a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, many of whom will be mine engineers, which are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems. There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that we continue to expand scale toward “super” pits and “deep” underground mining fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in-situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction, and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment; novel separations, processing and recycling methods; and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions – just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in our field, complete with big data issues, sophisticated analytics and modeling efforts, and cyber-security challenges. Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining, and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that our focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can we make miners safer and healthier on-site and off? How can we contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and long-term, for having a mine next door? How can we help transform artisanal mining practices to also contribute to sustainable development? How can our work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can we improve the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises?"

Texas is a major producer of industrial mineral resources required by the state’s ever-growing population that now exceeds 28 million. Texas typically ranks in the top three states for the value of non-fuel mineral production with a total value of $5.2 billion in 2017, accounting for 6.9% of the total US mineral value. Almost 90% of current Texas industrial mineral value comes from the production of cement, crushed stone, industrial sand, and construction sand and gravel. Construction material consumption is focused in the 25 metropolitan areas of the state with populations of > 100,000 residents. Industrial mineral consumption is dominated by the four most populous regions of the state—Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio-New Braunfels, and Austin-Round Rock—with an aggregate population of more than 18 million. More than 11,000 employees work in Texas mining and processing operations. Texas produces more crushed stone than any other state from more than 200 quarries; a similar number of operations produce sand and gravel. Specialty industrial sand production for use as proppants in hydraulic fracturing for enhanced petroleum production serves as an excellent example of how developments in one industry sector can markedly affect another industry; the production of industrial sand in Texas has markedly increased over the past decade, reaching $1.3 billion in 2014. With Texas’ population projected to reach 50 million by 2050, continuing in-state development and production of industrial minerals will be required to supply its residential, commercial, and industrial users. Favorable geology and economic factors provide opportunities for identification and development of new industrial mineral production sites.

"By the time the latest expansion of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) system, known locally as Metro and which opened in 1976, is completed in 2020, the system will serve 97 stations and operate on 188 km (117 miles) of track on six interconnecting lines. Metro provides a critical transportation link to a population of approximately six million people within a 3,900-km2 (1,500-sq-mile) Washington Metropolitan area and has allowed job growth to expand to all corners of the region. In the 1950s and 1960s, when the system was first conceived and construction began, most jobs were centered in downtown Washington, and most of the workforce commuted by bus or car. Today, transit-oriented development has increased residential, commercial and government facilities near most of the existing 91 stations increasing the importance of the Metro system as a critical transportation link for the region. According to recent American Public Transportation Association (APTA) data, Metro is the second busiest transit system in the United States (after New York City’s transit system).During the nearly 50 years of construction on the Washington Metro system, technology improvements and lessons learned from the global tunneling industry were implemented. Portions of this background and history have been adapted from other work by the authors Roach et al. (2017) and expanded for use herein. For soil tunnels, these improvements included the change from a “two-pass” tunnel lining with a typical initial lining of steel ribs with wood lagging or segmental precast lining erected within the tunnel shield followed by a final lining of cast-in-place concrete to a one-pass lining system of pre-cast concrete gasketed segmental lining. Soil tunnels were originally excavated using open-face tunnel shields, but changed over time. By the late 1980s, tunneling using closed, pressurizedface tunnel boring machines (TBMs) using a one-pass tunnel lining consisting of segmental precast concrete permitted tunneling in a wider range of soil conditions with much less risk of damaging overlying utilities or structures, greater safety for tunnel construction personnel and without the need to dewater the soils. However, due to concerns about conditioning clays with earth pressure balance (EPB) TBMs, open face machines were still favored by contractors for their better advance rates, lower cost and ability to deal with boulders that were occasionally encountered in the Coastal Plain Terrace Deposits."

For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

Although production operations at mines, representing the extraction and removal of the mined material, often appear to receive the greatest amount of attention, the emphasis given to auxiliary operations is continually increasing. This is due to the changing economic, social, and environmental climate in which modern mines must operate. Auxiliary operations can best be described as those activities that are not directly related to the extraction and removal of the mined material, but must receive proper attention if recovery is to take place in a safe, efficient, and socially responsible manner. In fact, certain mining auxiliary operations, such as strata control and ventilation, are considered to be of such importance that they warrant separate sections in this Handbook. Judging from a mine-personnel standpoint, it is not uncommon for a mine to hire the same number or more individuals responsible for auxiliary operations as the number assigned to production.
