In 1989 The First Brigade for Geology and Mineral Exploration of Qinghai Province discovered gold at Jinlonggou and Qinlongtan, Tanjianshan. Between 1992 and 2002 small scale mining was carried out at these sites using underground mining methods at Jinlonggou and an open pit at Qinlongtan. During 2003 and 2004 geotechnical investigations were carried out in support of a bankable feasibility study. An important objective of this investigation was to meet both internationally accepted standards and codes of practice, and also to satisfy the Chinese requirements. Extensive use of local experience was utilised. Where possible geological drilling information was incorporated into the assessment. Extensive geotechnical mapping of surface and underground exposures, and index testing to gain an appreciation of rock intact strength were used to characterise the sites. Rock mass classification (MRMR) was used to assess indicative overall slope angles and appropriate bench stack heights for the proposed pits at Jinlonggou and Qinlongtan. Measured discontinuity orientations were used in kinematic analysis to assess stability of possible pit slope geometry at a batter and overall scale to provide preliminary recommendations for the pit slope configuration. Numerical modelling was also carried out to improve the understanding of anticipated pit behaviour. Site investigation and preliminary geotechnical design details, that incorporate site specific conditions for the formation of open pits at Tanjianshan, are discussed in this paper.

Present day capital costs are analysed for a 2 000 metric tonne per day (MTPD) pyrite burning plant and compared with a sulphur burning plant of the same capacity. Power, raw material and steam production rates are then compared for the two facility types. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to highlight the impact changing sulphur, pyrite, capital and operating costs have on the relative economics of these feeds. Technological improvement effects on capital cost and energy recovery are also discussed. Besides the steam produced from the burning of pure sulphur or pyrite, plants using an advanced form of heat recovery can produce up to 10 bar steam using heat from acid formation. The quantity depends on the overall water balance which is influenced by such factors as gas strength and product acid concentration. Modern materials and innovative process design also improve the ability to increase the high pressure steam from the roaster boiler in pyrite plants above the traditional 1.25 kg of superheated steam per kg of acid produced.

In deep level hard rock mining the rheological behaviour of the rock is important as time-dependent aseismic processes can lead to a stable dissipation of energy thus reducing violent outbursts. Underground closure measurements, observations of time-dependent fracture formation and siesmic data indicate that the rock in deep South African gold mines shows significant time-dependent behaviour. The objective of this work is to quantify the time-dependent rock behaviour for laboratory specimens and underground conditions. Laboratory experiments indicated that lava and quartzite specimens undergo measurable creep strain at stress magnitudes below the failure stress. Quartzite is however prone to more significant creep at lower stress levels. A viscoelastic analysis showed that laboratory creep results can not fully explain the behaviour observed underground. The in situ behaviour is governed mainly by the rheological behaviour of the fracture zone and the resulting time-dependent formation of new fractures. A viscoplastic discontinuity model implemented in a boundary element program is used to simulate this behaviour.

In order to optimize carbon injection into oxidizing slags, in terms of carbon and iron yield, we must have a detailed understanding of the kinetics of the reactions involved. The current study measures the rate of carbon oxidation during injection at steelmaking temperature by means of injections of coal into EAF slags. The compositions of analysed outgoing gas were used to calculate gas flow rate and hence the gasification rate of carbon. A fundamental equation to predict residual carbon in slags was developed. The predictions using this model at moderate injection rates are in good agreement with experimental data. The reaction rate of EAF slag with carbon is under mixed control by the slag gas and the gas carbon reactions. The relative importance of each step depends mainly on the v-ratio of slags. A relative reactivity parameter ? has been defined and it is found to be important to carbon-slag reaction kinetics and slag foaming. Key words: carbon-slag reaction, kinetics, slag foaming.

Nkomati Nickel JV exploits the ores of the Uitkomst Complex near Machadodorp in the Waterval Boven district in South Africa?s Mpumalanga Province. Due to factors such as the remote location, stellar growth in production, opencast mining methods, and ore characteristics, a number of innovative processing options were selected. Nkomati has undertaken numerous initiatives over the last few years to improve plant running times, metallurgical performance, and operational profitability. Great emphasis has been placed on effectiveness of management control systems. A number of initiatives such as short interval control and time?in-state metrics have been implemented. A focus on improvement on availability and asset utilization of key items of equipment has been particularly effective. While the ores are remarkably similar to the Merensky and UG2 reefs, the relatively high base metal sulphide content and mineralogical characteristics make metallurgical treatment somewhat different to the ores of the Bushveld Complex. The low head grades and flotation kinetics distinguish Nkomati from other base metal operations. Numerous milling and flotation optimization initiatives have resulted in dramatic improvements in throughput, recoveries, and concentrate grades. This paper discusses the metallurgical, operational, and management challenges and the outcomes obtained.

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The purpose of this project was to identify constraints that could occur in the current sub-decline shaft at Turffontein Shaft should an increase in production take place. Particular attention was to be paid to the transportation of men and materials and to the broken rock and ventilation capacity of the shaft. This project is an in-depth evaluation of the logistic capacity of the sub-decline system at Turffontein Shaft in order to determine by how much production can be increased in this area to replace tonnages from the vertical shaft area, where ore reserves are rapidly becoming depleted.

The effect of flotation operational parameters on froth stability and froth recovery was studied. Froth stability was measured using a special column. To determine the froth recovery, the froth height change model and froth height exponential model were used. It was found that since the interactions between the pulp and froth zones affect the time of froth formation, the exponential model is more suitable than the froth height change method for determining the froth recovery. The results showed that superficial air velocity and collector dosage have, respectively, the highest and lowest effect on the froth recovery, while froth recovery decreases sharply with increasing froth height.

The use of drilling rigs to increasingly mechanize stope drilling has been acknowledged as important for the S.A. mining industry in it ís efforts to tackle the challenges of low productivity, AIDS and an ageing driller workforce. The spin-offs of increased safety, cost-effectiveness and better mining performance provide advantages to all?from the driller to the shareholder. However, implementation or product rollout has varied from outright success to dismal failure. A study of various cases by Novatek and Anglogold TDS showed clear reasons for these differences. Whereas the successes were characterized by clear objectives, accountability, user buy-in, a commitment to make the technology work and no-nonsense reporting, these were typically absent in failed implementations. The attitude at unsuccessful mines was to ?trial? the equipment?even subconsciously, a ?trial? is a test where failure becomes an acceptable outcome. During the study it became clear that mining management are not adequately trained to manage the often-tricky rollout process. They are often also not empowered or clearly mandated to deal with the organizational, human and technical issues that must dovetail to create a success. The output of the study was to develop a basic rollout process that could be used to formally manage the implementation of new drilling technology. Creating an alignment between the mine, workforce and supplier promotes a win-win situation that will not otherwise spontaneously arise.

In his 1978 monograph ‘Lognormal-de Wijsian Geostatistics for Ore Evaluation’, Professor Danie Krige emphasized the scale-independence of gold and uranium determinations in the Witwatersrand goldfields. It was later established in nonlinear process theory that the original model of de Wijs used by Krige was the earliest example of a multifractal generated by a multiplicative cascade process. Its end product is an assemblage of chemical element concentration values for blocks that are both lognormally distributed and spatially correlated. Variants of de Wijsian geostatistics had already been used by Professor Georges Matheron to explain Krige’s original formula for the relationship between the block variances as well as permanence of frequency distributions for element concentration in blocks of different sizes. Further extensions of this basic approach are concerned with modelling the three-parameter lognormal distribution, the ‘sampling error’, as well as the ‘nugget effect’ and ‘range’ in variogram modelling. This paper is mainly a review of recent multifractal theory, which throws new light on the original findings by Professor Krige on self-similarity of gold and uranium patterns at different scales for blocks of ore by (a) generalizing the original model of de Wijs to account for random cuts; (b) using an accelerated dispersion model to explain the appearance of a third parameter in the lognormal distribution of Witwatersrand gold determinations; and (c) considering that Krige’s sampling error is caused by shape differences between single ore sections and reef areas.

"The effect of particle size on the flotation kinetics of a low-rank coal was compared using air bubbles and oily bubbles. Five kinetic models were applied to the data from the tests to derive the relationships between the flotation rate constant, the ultimate recovery, and the particle size fraction. The results show that oily bubble flotation (OBF) resulted in a lower ash content and higher combustible recovery than air bubble flotation (ABF), especially for the -125 ??m size fraction. It was found that the flotation of a low-rank coal in individual size fractions using air bubbles and oily bubbles can be best described by a first-order model with rectangular distribution of tendency to float and the classical first-order model respectively. OBF yielded higher ultimate combustible and ultimate ash recoveries. The flotation rate constants for OBF were higher in all the models except for the fully mixed reactor model. The ultimate recovery values and modified rate constants first increased and then decreased as the size fraction decreased. The trend of the flotation rate constants as a function of the size fraction was similar in all the models except for the fully mixed reactor model. IntroductionFroth flotation is a physical-chemical separation method that is widely used in coal beneficiation for the separation of fine coal particles from associated minerals in water slurries. Since the cumulative recovery of a component in the concentrate is proportional to flotation time, the flotation process can be considered as a time-rate recovery process (Emad, Mohammad, and Bahram, 2010). Therefore, the general mathematical flotation models that incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can describe flotation time recovery profiles.The kinetics of coal flotation, as a measure of coal recovery as a function of time, have been studied in detail by many researchers. Different kinetic models have been proposed and published in the literature. The order and the rate constant are strongly dependent on the flotation conditions, such as the particle size and size distribution, the bubble concentration, the reagent concentrations, and the operating parameters (Zhang et al., 2013). The particle size has been reported to affect the flotation kinetics to a great extent (Yoon, Luttrell, and Asmatulu, 2002; Ntengwe and Witika, 2011). Numerous researchers have studied the aspects of flotation kinetics while paying special attention to particle size (Meftuni and Ibrahim, 1997; Rubinstein and Samygin, 1998; Graeme, 2012). However, the effect of particle size on the flotation kinetics of a low-rank coal has been relatively little discussed."

A wide range of materials are used in hydraulic backfilling operations and the pipeline flow behaviour of these mixtures varies considerably. It is shown that despite the large differences in constituent materials and flow behaviour, a common approach can be applied to analysing the flow of all hydraulic backfills. This is extended to include a rational design approach for backfill distribution systems. The use and limitations of pipe loop tests as a design aid is discussed. Backfill quality control is identified as a key area where improvement needs to be made to enhance the reliability of backfill system operation.

Selection of the most suitable roadheaders (boom type tunnelling machines) for the galleries/tunnels to be excavated in certain rock and under known project conditions is important for avoiding problems during application. This research utilized a multiple attribute decision-making method and studied how this will be applied for the selection of boom-type excavation machines. The Cayirhan Coal Basin was used for selecting roadheaders using the analytical hierarchy process, which is one of the multiple attribute decision-making methods. To conclude, this study reveals that decision-making methods can be used in the process of selecting roadheaders for the excavation of galleries. The approximately 2800 Ma old Ventersdorp Contact Reef is a unique Witwatersrand orebody, from which about 6% of the world?s gold production is derived. A major portion of this production is mined at depths exceeding 2500 m and deepest levels of mining are at about 3600 m. The orebody?s hangingwall consists of volcanic rocks. This differs from the older Witwatersrand orebodies, which have quartzitic hangingwalls. The thickness of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef is generally about 1.20 m, but is highly variable, at an average dip of about 18°. A pronounced unconformity beneath this orebody is also expressed by varying footwall rock type characteristics and frequent rolling of the reef plane. These rolls follow topographic variations of the palaeo-surface. More geological than rock mechanics studies were performed on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef prior to 1992. Recently, however, a multidisciplinary team comprising various rock engineering and geological disciplines has delineated geotechnical areas by a novel technique. Geotechnical areas are defined by distinct footwall/hangingwall rock assemblages. The presence of three footwall and two hangingwall rock types results in the definition of six geotechnical areas across a distance exceeding 60 km, including about 10 gold mines. Distinct rock mass behaviour has been documented in three of the six geotechnically defined areas. Different rock mass behaviour is expressed by features such as mining-induced fracturing, closure rates, fall of ground characteristics and seismic character. Some geological features override the rock mass behaviour as defined for the individual geotechnical areas. These are undulations of the orebody or the frequency, characteristics and attitude of major discontinuities. It is concluded that the concept of geotechnically subdividing orebodies is not only important for facies delineation and the associated grade, but also needs to be considered for safety aspects, in determining factors such as the appropriate support to be employed.

Kriel Colliery has experienced some sub-standard blast results on the overburden. Blast results are considered poor when the fragmentation is too big, back break into the new highwall, capping is experienced and/or excess overburden material is thrown into the void. Poor blasting leads to lower productivity, equipment breakdowns, and poor drilling and blasting results on the adjacent blast, contamination of coal or loss of coal. A simulation was developed in Microsoft Excel to model blasting results while changing various parameters. From the simulation results, it could be seen that a change of blast design could be beneficial. As an example, smaller drilling patterns were simulated (10 m x10 m to 8 m x8 m, and 8 m x8 m to 7 m x7 m in Pit 5 and Pit 6 respectively) in combination with changes in explosives (P700 emulsion vs. ANFO) and drill bit diameter (311 mm vs. 251 mm). The results show that each of the options has a specific scenario that will be most beneficial to the mine. These results are quite specific and subject to variable inputs. The purpose of the example is to demonstrate how the simulation can be used as a tool to asses blast design variations.

Up to now, Topsøe WSA (Wet gas Sulphuric Acid) plants have been in operation for almost 30 years, and close to 80 plants have been sold. In spite of its unique features and ability to treat gases without any prior drying, the WSA technology has had certain restrictions with regards to SO2 concentration in the feed gas, and the overall conversion of SO2 by catalytic means has been limited to approx. 99.7%. In commercial scale sulphuric acid production on the basis of elemental sulphur and metallurgical off-gases, there is a demand for higher SO2 conversion and treatment of gases with a higher content of SO2. Therefore Topsoe has further developed its WSA technology to cope with these demands. This paper will explain more about the principles of such new development and leave the delegate with a better understanding of the potentials of the new generation of the WSA technology from Topsoe.

"SynopsisThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. While southern Africa’s abundance of minerals resources is still unrivalled, it has lost considerable dominance in terms of production output. The sustainability of southern Africa’s mining industry is increasingly becoming dependent on its ability to manage the performance of its operations well. A valuable tool for monitoring and managing performance is the use of key performance areas (KPAs) – which are those areas of performance that are reflected explicitly or implicitly in the vision and strategies of an organization and reflect the critical success factors of the organization. This paper is a review of key performance areas in the southern African mining delivery environment. The KPAs discussed in this paper have been identified by comparing KPAs of the several mining houses engaged in surface mining operations in southern Africa and then extracting those KPAs that are common to most of them. Although the authors support the view that each organization should develop KPAs to specifically fit its needs, the study reveals that five KPAs – safety and health, costs, product quality, fleet management, and delivery should form a default list that covers the key areas that any organization should consider when choosing KPAs. KPIs are those subsets of KPAs that we measure in order to manage KPAs.IntroductionThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

Generally, monitoring of refractory furnace linings is of interest to the metallurgical industry. The main issues are to control wear of the furnace lining and break out of molten metal. Penetration of molten metal through the lining can cause considerable damage to equipment in the vicinity of the furnace and endanger operators. Rebuilding of a furnace lining is expensive, mainly because it stops production, but also because the lining materials are expensive. Here, two methods for monitoring the lining of a smelting furnace are presented. The methods are based on monitoring of the temperature distribution in the lining, more specific monitoring an isotherm in the lining. One method is based on the assumption of unidirectional heat flow locally, reducing the problem to a set of one-dimensional heat conduction problems. The other method is based on inverse heat conduction. In this context inverse heat conduction means estimating the wear from temperature measurements using mathematical optimization techniques. The study is based on the ilmenite smelting furnace at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS. Some results from real temperature measurements and real observations from the ilmenite smelting furnaces is presented.
