The Witwatersrand Basin contains by far the most gold ever found, and has hosted mining from its discovery in 1886 to the present. For many years, South Africa was the world’s largest producerof gold, nearly all of which came from the Witwatersrand. Since 2000, South Africa has fallen back several positions because of declining gold output. There are many complex and varied reasons for this; however, declining gold resources in the Witwatersrand Basin are not one of them. As far as the author knows, there are no qualified estimates in the literature of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. This paper collects mining data from several sources and then, using elementary gold accounting and error analysis, attempts to estimate the amount of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. It includes gold underground in existing and defunct mines, in evaluated ore resources, and dumps. Compiled data from 1887 to 2019 shows that 50 200 t of gold were produced by Witwatersrand mines, while it is estimated that a further 48 100 t remainunderground, both within and outside of mine leases, a further 1 600 t on the surface in tailings,and an unknown amount in rock dumps. Nearly all of this gold will remain inaccessible with current mining methods, and major technical developments in mining will be necessary before any of the gold can be categorized as a code-compliant resource or reserve. To win this prize, the mining industry will have to rethink its approach to mining, both in old mining leases and in the unexploited ground. It will also have to find effective means of preventing gold theft and informal mining, which are on the rise.

Sulphide minerals, such as pyrite and sphalerite, are leached by ferric sulphate. This reaction produces ferrous sulphate and other dissolved products. The ferrous sulphate is re-oxidized to ferric sulphate by bacteria. These reactions can be written as: [ ] However, in 1964 Silverman and Ehrlich proposed that this is not the only role that is played by bacteria. These researchers proposed that T. ferrooxidans enhances the rate of oxidation of pyrite above that achieved by chemical reaction with ferric sulphate at the same solution conditions. This enhancement in the rate of dissolution was proposed to occur by direct microbiological action, possibly by the extra cellular secretion of an enzymatic oxidant. Since the Silverman and Ehrlich proposal, different authors have made opposing claims concerning the action of T. ferrooxidanson pyrite. "SynopsisGibb Consulting Services was contracted by Eskom Line Engineering Services to conduct an investigation to determine the absolute displacement to date and infer the current rate of displacement of unsurveyed colliery backfill.At the test site, where a 400 kV power line is to be constructed, neither the surface nor the backfill material had been monitored and it was not possible to state whether the surface will be subject to future settlement that may compromise surface infrastructure. Therefore indirect methods of estimating current and future displacements needed to be found to act as a proxy for a comprehensive long-term settlement monitoring exercise and provide a reasonable estimate for the settlement that has occurred in the decades of mining.The innovative solution was to recover essentially undisturbed core from backfill using a sonic drill rig and use the measured dry density values from the samples as a proxy for the rate and absolute displacement in the backfill.The success in obtaining an essentially undisturbed backfill core and the clear relationship of the backfill density with age and depth allowed the conclusion to be issued that the power line infrastructure can be constructed over the backfill; with a warning that once the water table recovers after mining ceases some collapse settlement may occur.With this method, the amount of settlement can be predicted and, if proven conclusively, provides a way to confidently release huge areas of currently waste ground for future surface infrastructural development.IntroductionIn coal mining, it is normal mining practice to backfill the newly mined-out voids with the excavated waste rock and soils. As there is no requirement for the mining companies to uniformly compact the spoil or accurately monitor surface or inter-backfill displacement, these backfilled voids are prone to differential compaction and consolidation settlement. They are therefore avoided as sites for future surface infrastructure work, especially for linear structures such as roads, railways, and power lines."

Titanium can exist in three different oxidation states. Its oxides are numerous and in presence of iron and oxygen, iron-titanium oxide compounds can also form. Some of the oxides are non-stoichiometric, making the determination of the thermodynamic properties of titanium and its oxides in molten steel and in slag difficult. Therefore, for the assessment of titanium activity in molten steel using the electrochemical measurements of oxygen partial pressure, the identification of oxides in equilibrium with titanium is important. This paper reports on an investigation of solid titanium oxide inclusions, which have been identified by combining different methods of analysis on quenched samples. These samples were taken from a Fe-Ti-melt at 1600°C, quenched in cold water then mounted and polished for optical microscopy. The oxide inclusions were analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Both single crystal and polycrystalline diffraction patterns were used to identify the oxides by comparing the d spacings with those in the ICDD X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) database. XRD was used to analyse the oxide particles on the top of slow cooled samples. It was found in the TEM study that the similarity of the diffraction patterns of the various phases meant that unique identification was difficult to achieve in some of the diffraction patterns. However, TiO, Ti2O3, Ti3O5, Ti4O7were identified in quenched samples, while TiO2, FeO.TiO2and iron oxides were seen in slow cooled samples. Sustainable development is currently an extremely relevant concept worldwide, especially in developing countries like South Africa. Mining and metals companies are also directly affected by the sustainable development agenda. The Mining Charter?s requirements as well as new legislation (Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act) expect, among others, for mines to support infrastructure and poverty eradication projects in the communities surrounding the mines. The aim of this paper is to, against the background of a qualitative study of mining communities in the North-West Province of South Africa, put forward some critical factors for the sustainability of social development projects in the mining sector.

Prismatic samples of a medium-grained sandstone from Slask Colliery (Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland) were tested under uniaxial compression, conventional triaxial compression and true triaxial compression conditions. The conventional triaxial compression tests were carried out at confining pressure (p) equal to 12.5, 25.0 and 37.5 MPa. In the true triaxial compression tests the minimum principal stress (s3) was equal to 25.0 MPa and the intermediate principal stress (s2) was 1.5, 2 and 2.5 times higher than s3. Results of the studies show that confining pressure strongly inhibited dilatant behavior of rock samples tested under conventional triaxial compression conditions; the increasing confinement resulted in the growing compaction of the rock material. The effect of dilatancy was also highly suppressed by the intermediate principal stress. While important dilatant, negative volumetric strain corresponded to the peak differential stress at low intermediate principal stress conditions, at high intermediate stresses the rock material was damaged to much lesser extent. As a result, faulting of rock samples in the post-peak region was much more violent and was accompanied by a strong acoustic effect. Les échantillons parallélépipédiques du grès à grains moyens de la mine ‘Slask’ (Bassin Houiller de Haute Silésie, Pologne) ont subi les essais de compression monoaxiale (compression simple), de compression triaxiale conventionnelle (compression triaxale de révolution) et de compression triaxiale vraie. Les essais de la compression triaxiale conventionnelle ont été effectués à la pression de confinement de 12,5, 25,0 et 37,5 MPa. Dans les essais de compression triaxiale vraie la contrainte principale minimale (s3) était de 25,0 MPa et la contrainte principale intermédiaire (s2) était 1,5, 2 et 2,5 fois supérieure de s3. Il résulte des essais que la pression de confinement inhibe fortement le processus de dilatance dans les échantillons testés dans les conditions de compression triaxiale conventionnelle; l’augmentation de la pression provoquait l’augmentation du compactage du matériau rocheux. Le phénomène de dilatance était également limité de façon significative par la contrainte principale intermédiaire. Alors que l’importante déformation volumique négative correspondait à la contrainte différentielle ultime avec les faibles contraintes principales intermédiaires, dans les conditions de fortes contraintes intermédiaires, le matériau rocheux subissait l'endommagement de façon beaucoup moins importante. En résultat, la rupture des échantillons rocheux au stade post-maximum était beaucoup plus violente et accompagnée d’un fort effet acoustique. Prismatische Probekörper des mittelkörnigen Sandsteines aus dem Bergwerk ‘Slask’ (das Oberschlesische Kohlengebiet, Polen) wurden unter der einaxialen Druckbeanspruchung, konventionellen dreiaxialen Druckbeanspruchung und der echten dreiaxialen Druckbeanspruchung geprüft. Konventionelle dreiaxiale Druckversuche wurden bei dem Manteldruck von 12,5 25,0 und 37,5 MPa durchgeführt. Bei den echten dreiaxialen Druckversuchen betrug die kleinste Hauptspannung (s3) 25,0 MPa und mittlere Hauptspannung (s2) war 1,5-, 2- und 2,5-mal höher als s3. Aus den durchgeführten Versuchen ergibt sich, dass der Manteldruck die Dilatanzentwicklung bei den Probekörpern unter der konventionellen dreiaxialen Druckbeanspruchung stark bremst; die Erhöhung des Druckes rief die ansteigende Kompaktion des Gesteinsmaterials hervor. Die Dilatanz wurde auch durch die mittlere Hauptspannung beschränkt. Während die wesentlichen volumetrischen, dilatanten Verformungen der Grenzdifferenzspannung bei den niedrigen mittleren Hauptspannungen entsprachen, bei den hohen mittleren Hauptspannungen wurde das Gesteinsmaterial viel weniger beschädigt. Im Ergebnis war der Scherbruch der Gesteinsproben im Post-Peak-Bereich viel heftiger und mit kräftigen akustischen Effekten verbunden.

"The predominant current processes for the treatment of oxidized copper–cobalt ores use a reductive acid leach to bring the desired metals into solution. However, the indiscriminate nature of acid leaching results in a solution, akin to a metal soup, containing not only the Cu and Co but also an extensive suite of other metals. These other metals, notably Fe, Mn, Al, Ca, Mg and Si, all have to be eliminated from solution before the copper and cobalt can be recovered. Generally precipitation processes are used, but these tend to result in significant losses of copper and/or more usually cobalt from solution, leading to reduced recoveries. The AmmLeach® process uses ammonia-based chemistry to selectively leach the target metals, leaving the rest behind in the leach residue. This approach eliminates any need to clean the solution of unwanted metals and the consequent metal losses. After solid–liquid separation, the leach solution is immediately subjected to separation and concentration of the copper and cobalt using solvent extraction and electrowinning. INTRODUCTION The Copper Belt extends through the northern part of Zambia and the southern province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and contains the richest and highest grade deposits of copper and cobalt remaining in the world. Whilst there are a number of mines that produce sulphide concentrates, using froth flotation, the largest deposits are those where near-surface sulphides have been weathered over time to form oxides. The oxides cannot be concentrated by conventional physical means to give high recoveries. Despite this, a number of dense medium separation plants have been installed and used to produce a higher grade concentrate which is typically exported (while the rejects, typically 2 to 3% Cu are stockpiled for treatment at a later date). These plants generally have low recoveries and can only be used on the dwindling supply of high grade materials. In exporting the concentrate, little value adding is undertaken within the country, thus greatly reducing the economic benefits to the country. Recent changes to the regulations in the DRC will effectively ban the export of low value ores, concentrates and intermediates in favour of high value metals. This will necessitate mines to install new processing circuits in order to comply with these regulations. The head grade of ores currently being treated in the DRC is slowly decreasing as the extremely high grade materials are being selectively mined out. In many cases, the removal of a small volume of high grade materials leaves a much larger volume of economically marginal ore behind. This is due to a desire for short-term profits overtaking long-term prosperity. The remaining ore, which in many cases is still of relatively high value by world class standards, is likely to be only treatable by low cost heap leaching. There are some initial trials of heap leaching within the DRC, but implementation at a large scale has yet to be adopted."

This paper presents an overview of work conducted over several years to investigate the continuous stope closure profiles recorded in tabular excavations and the use of this data as a hazard indicator. In spite of the brittle nature of the rock, measurements in gold mines and intermediate depth platinum mines revealed a significant time-dependent closure component. Various approaches to simulate the time-dependent closure have been investigated. Viscoelastic theory is able to simulate the time-dependent closure behaviour, but there are subtle problems with the use of this theory as it cannot simulate the failure processes in the rock. To overcome these problems, continuum and discontinuum elasto-viscoplastic models were developed by the authors. Discontinuum models have the advantage of being able to simulate the creep behaviour of prominent discontinuities. Development of these models has led to useful insights into rock mass deformation and has made the numerical simulation of parameters, such as rate of mining, possible for the first time. A number of practical applications for the mining industry have been developed from this study. Fracture initiation and propagation, being one of the most intensive subjects in rock mechanics; contribute significantly to the deformation of jointed rock masses. An experimental study on fractured granitic rock was carried out to determine the peak strength of specimen under triaxial loading conditions. The commonly observed failure mode for rock specimens in this study was found to be the shearing of the plane of weakness. The minimum peak strength of fractured rock is observed when the joint orientation is approximately 70° to the horizontal axis. Based on experimental test data, an empirical expression was developed to accommodate the effect of joint orientation and joint trace length in estimating the peak strength of fractured rocks. The predicted values of peak strength using the proposed equation well agree with the experimental results carried out on singly fractured specimens under triaxial loading conditions. The threshold stress values of crack initiation and propagation depend on joint geometrical parameters, their degree of interconnectivity, as well as surrounding stresses on the fracture plane.

"A mineral resource royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In South Africa, this payment is made to the State as holder of the mineral rights (The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008). The principle purpose of this research paper is to identify if the State is benefitting from the mineral resource royalty by considering its impact on seven individual Witwatersrand gold mines.For this study, a simple financial optimiser model was created in Microsoft Excel that links the ore flow, block listing and the cash flow (excluding or including the cost of the mineral resource royalty). Mixed integer linear programing (the Excel Solver function) is utilised to optimise either profit or NPV (at 9% and 12%) by adjusting the cut-off grade.The impact on each of the seven mines mine was different but overall R7.9 billion is estimated to be paid in mineral resource royalty over their expected remaining lives. Due to the cost of the mineral resource royalty and increasing the cut-off grades, the total revenue decreases by R10 billion. A significant portion of this lost revenue would have been paid to the State in the forms of other taxation including company income tax which decreases by R2.8 billion. It is recommended that an industry wide investigation be conducted to determine if the resource royalty is adding to the State’s revenue, or destroying value including premature job losses. IntroductionTaxation of mining companies has become a very topical subject in the context of the postapartheid South African economy. There have been increasing calls for equitable re-distribution of mineral asset wealth for the benefit of all South African citizens and not just to an elite few. As part of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MRDPA) of 2002, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008 was introduced and came into effect in 2010 (South African Revenue Services, 2008). A mineral royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In the case where the holder of the mineral right is the State, then this payment is made to the State (Cawood, 1999). Studies on the potential impact of the mineral resource royalty on the minerals industry have been conducted during the formulation of the Act and subesquently. These include Cawood and Macfarlane (2003), who suggested a cap of no more than 3% (Cawood and Macfarlane, 2003), as well as Cawood (2011), who predicted rising cut-off grades and thus reducing mineral reserves. In 2013, Grobler completed a Masters in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria and concluded that the impact of the mineral resource royalty on the economy is positive. She stated that the royalty has caused operating expenses to increase, but this does not appear to be significant. Furthermore, she stated that the royalty has not affected the way the mining industry operates (Grobler, 2014)."

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The stability of a ferrosilicon dense medium suspension is one of the most important parameters to keep under control since it determines the density gradient of the medium in the separation zone and thus directly influences separation sharpness. The stability of ferrosilicon suspensions were characterized using settling tests employing a differential pressure method. Particles smaller than 45 µm and especially the ore fines played an important role in the settling behaviour of the solids. The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

Based on results from triaxial compressive tests, an experimental damage model to simulate post-peak behaviours as well as nonlinear behaviours before peak strength was developed. In order to consider pre-peak behaviours, variations of elastic constants at each damage level were regressed by functions of confining pressure. In addition, post-peak behaviours were simulated successfully by using Hoek-Brown constants. As results, the experimental model could predict nonlinear behaviours, peak strengths and stiffness changes observed in experiments. Basé sur des résultats des essais compressifs à trois axes, un modèle expérimental de dommages pour simuler des comportements de poteau-crête aussi bien que des comportements non-linéaires avant la force maximale a été développé. Afin de considérer des comportements de pré-crête, des variations des constantes élastiques à chaque niveau de dommages ont été régressées par des fonctions de pression d'emprisonnement. En outre, des comportements de poteau-crête ont été simulés avec succès en employant des constantes de Hoek-Brunes. Comme résultat, le modèle expérimental a pu prévoir des comportements non-linéaires, des forces maximales et des changements de riidité observés dans les expériences. Auf Basis der Ergebnisse des dreiaxialen Drucktests wurde das experimentelle Schadensmodell, das sowohl das nicht-lineare Verhalten vor der maximalen Stärke als auch das Verhalten nach der maximalen Stärke simulieren kann, entwickelt. Um das Verhalten vor der maximalen Stärke zu berücksichtigen, wurden die Veränderungen der elastischen Konstante bei dem jeweiligen Schadensniveau durch die Funktionen des begrenzten Drucks zurückgegangen. Außerdem wurde das Verhalten nach der maximalen Stärke unter Benutzung von Hoek-Brown Konstanten erfolgreich simuliert. Schließlich konnte das experimentelle Modell das nicht-lineare Verhalten, die maximale Stärke und die Veränderungen bezüglich der Steifigkeit während der Experimente voraussehen.

Alloys used at high temperature must resist both creep and corrosion. Design for corrosion resistance is based on the formation of a slow-growing, protective oxide scale by selective oxidation of an appropriate alloy component, usually chromium or aluminium. A successful scale will exclude other corrodents, notably carbon, which can otherwise cause extremely rapid corrosion at high temperatures. Selective oxidation of an alloy component necessarily lowers the concentration of that metal in the alloy subsurface region. Under thermal cycling conditions, mechanical damage to the scale leads to renewed oxide growth and accelerated alloy depletion. Eventually, a point is reached where diffusion of a corrodent into the alloy becomes competitive with the outward diffusion of alloy metal to repair the protective scale. Two examples of alloy failure by carbon attack are considered. In the steam cracking (pyrolysis) process, centrifugally cast tubes of heat-resisting alloy are exposed to a gas stream of hydrocarbon and steam, at a carbon activity of unity. Formation and repair of the surface chromia scale causes alloy depletion, Kirkendall void formation, and subsequent internal precipitation of chromium-rich carbides. Their formation makes chromia scale formation much more difficult, and generates internal stress. Eventually, the tubes fail by creep rupture. In other processes (e.g. steam reforming, heat treatment), synthesis gases are supersaturated with carbon at intermediate temperatures. Once the alloy's protective scale is breached, carbon attacks the depleted substrate. In the case of ferritic alloys, it forms a surface scale of Fe3C. As this scale thickens, the supersaturated carbon precipitates as graphite within its outer regions. The resulting volume expansion causes disintegration of the cementite in a process known as metal dusting. In the case of austenitic alloys, no metal carbide is formed. Instead, carbon dissolves in the depleted metal to diffuse inward and precipitate as graphite within the metal matrix. Again, volume expansion causes disintegration of the alloy, and metal dusting results. Dusting occurs at an extraordinarily rapid rate, and leads to failure by section loss or even penetration.

The estimation of the spatial variation of the b-value of the Gutenberg- Richter relationship is important for both the general interpretation of the mechanism of rock mass response and seismic hazard assessment. The interpretation of b-value as a parameter of rock mass response is discussed in this paper. The methods applied to evaluate the spatial variation of b-value and the algorithm for obtaining the magnitude of completeness and b-value for subsets of data are presented with some verification analyses. The algorithms presented enable the automation of a spatial evaluation of b-value.

"SynopsisSeismically active mines generally experience an increase in seismic hazard due to rock mass instability following blasting. Re-entry protocols commonly include measures to limit the spatial and temporal exposure of personnel to increased seismic hazard induced by blasting. The management of periods of increased seismic hazard requires the development of re-entry protocols for a unique mining environment. Identifying mining conditions that may result in significant seismicity following blasting relies on retrospective analysis, which is often focused on seismicity occurring within a certain period after blasting and within a certain radius of the blast in the broader context of site-specific experience.The analysis of seismicity without considering blasting times and locations allows for the relationship between seismicity and blasting to be investigated without prior assumptions concerning dependency. To achieve independent analysis, seismicity that is clustered in space and time (referred to as a seismic sequence) must be identified by assessment utilizing only seismic parameters. An automated algorithm is implemented that assesses the timing, location, and quantity of seismicity to identify seismic sequences, represented by the time of the first event and mean location of all events in the sequence.The relationship between sequences and blasts is assessed by calculating the distance and time from each sequence to the closest blast in space and time. Establishing an independent classification between sequences and blasting provides insight into the unique cases where seismic sequences are remote and/or delayed with respect to blasts and identifies cases when sequences exhibit a weak relation to blasting. The nature of seismic responses to blasting has direct implications for the management of the increased seismic hazard associated with seismic sequences.The approach presented in this study contributes to the management of seismic hazard by providing empirical support for the relationship between seismic sequences and blasting. These relationships indicate the portions of sequences that can and cannot be practically managed using tactical approaches. Furthermore, the analysis of sequences reveals the nature and evolution of rock mass responses to blasting. These results have implications for the extent of spatial or temporal re-entry restrictions required for the optimal management of time-dependent rock mass response to mining."

The aim of the hybrid location method is to improve seismic event locations by reducing the effects of errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each recording site. We report on further enhancements made to the hybrid location algorithm, which is based on the double-difference method developed by Spottiswoode and Milev1and Waldhauser and Ellsworth2. The term ?double-difference? refers to the residuals between the observed and theoretical travel-time differences and are obtained using either picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. These residuals are minimized for pairs of earthquakes at each station while linking together all observed event-station pairs. An important enhancement is that the double-difference term uses the median arrival time residuals to reduce the effect of outliers on the system of equations. In addition, the hybrid locations are further constrained by considering events of known locations, in this case along lines of development blasts. We relocated some 20 000 previously located seismic events in the Driefontein 5E area; 5 800 of these events were considered to have been development blasts and we constrained their locations to lie on the straight lines joining about 2 150 survey pegs from the mine?s database. Relocated events were shown to distribute more closely around advancing faces than had been the case before relocation. Wave velocities from the development blasts show evidence of anisotropy.

ABSTRACT : An experimental programme for damage assessment was performed in the vicinity of the main shaft of Andra’s Underground Research Laboratory, currently under construction in the East of France, when the shaft is crossing the Kimmeridgian marls between 80 and 100 m depth. The mechanical behaviour was analysed by mean of convergence and displacement measurements. The disturbance into the wall was assessed using numerous methods such as measurement of sonic velocities, permeability measurement and VSP measurement in radial boreholes. The intensity of the damaged zone is low, and its extension does not exceed 0.5 time the radius of the shaft. It does not seem to depend on blasting patterns. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Ein Forschungs- und Versuchsprogramm wurde aufgestellt, um die beschädigte Zone im Bereich der Kimmeridgemergel zwischen 80 und 100 Meter Tiefe beim Zugangsschacht des im Bau befindlichen Andralabors im Osten Frankreichs zu berechnen. Das mechanische Verhalten der Formationen wird auf der Grundlage von Konvergenz- und Verschiebungsmessungen ermittelt. Verschiedene Messmethoden, wie z.B. mikroseismische Geschwindigkeite Messungen, Permeabilitäs- und Beschleunigungsbestimmungen in strahlenförmigen Bohranordnungen, erlaubten die Ermittlung des Beschädigungscharakters der Schachtwand. Die Intensität der beschädigten Zone ist niedrig, ihre Ausdehnung übersteigt nicht die Hälfte des Radius des Zugangsstollens und scheint unabhängig vom Schema der Sprengstoffanordnungen zu sein. RESUME : Un programme expérimental visant à évaluer la zone endommagée autour du puits d’accès du Laboratoire de Recherche Souterrain de l’Andra actuellement en construction dans l’Est de la France a été mis en œuvre lors de la traversée des marnes du Kimméridgien entre 80 et 100 m de profondeur. Le comportement mécanique des formations est évalué à partir de mesures de convergence et de déplacements. La mise en œuvre de nombreuses méthodes, telles que des mesures microsismiques, des mesures de perméabilité et d’accélérométrie en forages radiaux, a permis de caractériser l’endommagement en paroi du puits. L’intensité de la zone endommagée est faible et son extension ne dépasse pas 0,5 fois le rayon du puits. L’endommagement semble indépendant des schémas de tirs testés.

Drums of a modern longwall shearer are manufactured to include various constructional features conveying extracted material onto the face conveyor as efficiently as possible. Designing a drum with a conical shell or with reduced vane length, consequently with a stepper vane angle, is the most widely employed method in an attempt to increase loading efficiency. This study compares loading performances of two such drums, one having a conical shell with modified loading vanes, the other with a cylindrical shell with reduced vane length. Firstly, the loading performances of drums are predicted and the maximum haulage rate attainable with the drums are calculated. Then the performances of drum are compared by long-term comprehensive underground trials with coal shearers under similar conditions during the production operation of Park Termik Cayirhan coalmine in Turkey. Although higher loading performance is predicted for cylindrical drums, the in situ trials point out that Globoid drums have a slightly higher loading performance than cylindrical drums. Furthermore, the relationship between operational variables, i.e. extraction height, sumping depth, haulage rate and in situ loading performance, were investigated statistically on the basis of data gathered during the underground trials.
