It is a great privilege for me to have been asked to present the closing address to this most successful symposium on backfill in the South African mining industry. When I accepted this invitation I did not fully appreciate the tremendous progress made on most aspects of backfilling in the last few years. The number and quality of papers presented at this symposium bear testimony to the mining industry's determination and success in introducing backfill in underground mines to improve strata control and environmental conditions, and to provide better protection to mineworkers against the hazards of rockbursts and rockfalls. Many contributions demonstrated that these benefits can be achieved at a reasonable cost, and in some instances improved grade and higher rate of face advance result in improved economics. In my closing address I will attempt to summarize the progress made in the various aspects of backfilling underground workings and to identify those areas which, in my opinion, require further attention and effort. I will undertake this review under the following main headings: ? fundamentals of backfilling; ? design of backfill systems; ? operation of backfill systems; ? control of backfill systems; and other aspects of backfill systems.

In initial laboratory tests with a travelling submerged jet on artificially prepared clay it was found that the cavity depth is dependent on the stagnation pressure of the jet and the undrained shear strength of the clay. In addition, it has been observed that the increase in cavity depth with jet pressure is stronger at higher jet pressures. It is assumed that this can be explained by cavitation of the jet at higher jet pressures. At cavitation a cone of bubbles is formed around the jet, which reduces the exchange of momentum between the jet and the surrounding water. This results in a higher jet velocity and a higher stagnation pressure at a specified distance from the nozzle exit. In literature, no relation between the jet pressure of a free submerged cavitating jet and stagnation pressures was found. Additional tests were carried out to determine this relationship. Because practical dredging occurs at relatively large water depths, these tests were performed in a pressure vessel at different pressure levels. It is concluded that the efficiency of a jet (defined as the stagnation pressure at a certain distance divided by the jet pressure), for stand-off-distances smaller than 45 times the nozzle diameter, increases significantly by cavitation in comparison to the non-cavitating situation. However, the jet pressure required for a fully developed cavitation cone increases strongly with water depth. At dredging depths of 20 m and more, the necessary jet pressures are higher than normally applied in dredging practice. Thus in spite of the importance of cavitation in laboratory tests at atmospheric pressure, in normal dredging practice cavitation is of less importance.

We show that the prioritization of business improvement and performance management decisions may be significantly improved by taking into account the systemic effects of changes made in a single process area. To do so we build a model of a mining value chain, taking into account consequential downtime that arises from downstream and upstream starvation and choking effects of each activity. Introducing the concept of internal capacity, this approach yields insight into the relative importance of key metrics such as loading and hauling rates. We suggest that a holistic view of this type should be a core component of business improvement and performance management decisions. In order to assess the requirements for online matching when using a transverse electric field (E-field) applicator to treat mineral ores continuously, the effect of varying load properties on matching has been investigated by simulation. The effective permittivity of the ore to be treated is expected to show variation on both short (< 1 s ) and long (minutes) time scales. By modelling the ore as a series of slices with alternating effective permittivity values, it was shown that permittivity variations on the scale of the expected particle size are attenuated significantly and matching is not required. For variations in permittivity on the length scale of the free-space wavelength, variations in reflected power are at most within ±10% of the mean. This is not considered operationally significant, as extreme permittivity variation over this length scale is unlikely, given the expected distribution of ore particle sizes to be treated. At typical ore transport speeds through the applicator, these variations occur on a time scale an order of magnitude shorter than the response time of typical industrial online matching equipment. This implies that online matching is neither required nor possible for short time scale variation. Long-term variations in dielectric properties can be adequately compensated for by current matching technologies. It is concluded that the transverse E-field applicator is robust to changes in the dielectric properties of crushed ores within the expected range of their variation.

A risk evaluation model has been developed that enables the quantification of expected injuries and economic losses resulting from rockfalls associated with a support system in a given geotechnical environment, which is described in Part I (Joughin et al., 2011b). Part II presents the validation of the risk evaluation model. Underground mapping of joints and rockfalls was carried out to provide data for field calibration of the model. This survey was limited to small rockfalls, due to the relatively short period of mapping. Therefore the model was also correlated with rockfall and rockfall injury data collected by mine personnel. The analyses showed that the model provides a reasonable estimate of the expected frequency and size of rockfalls and the frequency of rockfall injuries, but further work is required to enhance the model. Three case studies are presented, which show the benefits of improved support systems from both economic and safety perspectives. This work has demonstrated that the risk evaluation model and the software developed are immediately useful, but further work is required to develop and improve the tools.

The optimal design of production phases and ultimate pit limit for an open pit mining operation may be generated using conventional or stochastic approaches. Unlike the conventional approach, the stochastic framework accounts for expected variability and uncertainty in metal content by considering a set of equally probable realizations (models) of the orebody. This paper evaluates the performance of a new stochastic network flow approach for the development of optimal phase design and ultimate pit limit using a gold deposit as the case study. The stochastic and conventional frameworks as considered here utilize the maximum flow and Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithms, respectively. The LG algorithm is restricted to considering an estimated (average-type) orebody model, while the stochastic maximum flow algorithm is developed to simultaneously use a set of simulated orebody realizations as an input. The case study demonstrates that, when compared to the conventional LG algorithm as used in the industry, the stochastic approach generates a 30 per cent increase in discounted cash flow, a21 per cent larger ultimate pit limit, and about 7 per cent more metal, while it maintains a consistency in phase size.

To improve the climatic environment underground the German coal mining industry has installed refrigerators with a capacity of 300 MW cooling power. One third of this total is accounted for by central refrigeration plants with more than 5 MW capacity. The central refrigeration comprises three stages: mechanical cooling, transport and distribution of chilled water via pipelines and exchange of heat in the air coolers. Of these three stages only the mechanical generation of chilled water has been resolved satisfactorily. Transport (including distribution) and exchange require further technical research. The Mining Institute of the Aachen University of Technology has done extensive studies on this subject, concentrating on controlling the flow of chilled water according to demand in the mine. Additionally, the favourable exchange in the air coolers is taken into account. The studies are based on a model mine which simulates the conditions in deep coal mines in Germany. The simulation program represents firstly the condition of the mine air at the location of the air being cooled, then the heat exchange in the air cooler itself, and finally the transport of the chilled water from the central refrigerator to the consumer. The program also reproduces the seasonal and operational changes in conditions of mine air as well as different air cooler designs. A regulated distribution of chilled water is also suggested. Finally, estimations of costs can be made as an aid for further planning.

Backfilling is one of the options available to the mining engineer in mine design. The decision as to the type of backfill is dependent on the purpose for which it will be used. For example, in a situation where high-grade, steeply dipping multiple reefs are to be mined, the purpose would be the following: ? to facilitate maximum extraction; a ? to minimize loss of fines; ? to allow closely spaced multiple reefs to be mined; and a ? to create a working platform. The physical properties required which will satisfy the abovementioned requirements can then be defined; the design of the fill plant, as well as the transport of the fill, will be governed by these considerations. The same procedure is also adopted in deciding on backfill in single- reef gold mines. The first question to be asked is the purpose of the fill. It may be to reduce the energy release rate, for environmental reasons, to reduce timber usage, to improve productivity, to reduce stoping costs, to obtain higher mining extraction, and so on. Only after one, or a combination, of these factors has been selected, can the specifications for the fill be decided on, and the plant designed accordingly. The introduction of backfill at Sheba Gold Mine will be used to illustrate the procedure adopted by Anglovaal in determining the type of fill required.

This study was aimed at a comparison of the efectiveness of a new axial-flow type of mixer impeller (the Prochem design) with the traditional inclined-blade turbine. The intended application of the mixers was in carbon-in-pulp plants for the extraction of gold from cyanide-leached pulps. The first part of the project involved water and ion-exchange resin, and measurement of the power drawn by the various sizes of impeller to fully suspend the resin. The rate of reaction between the resin and the solution was measured as a function of the power input to the mixer. In the second part of the project, use was made of activated carbon, silver cyanide solutions, and ore pulps. The rate of absorption of silver from the solutions and pulps was determined, as well as the rate of attrition of the activated carbon caused by the various impellers in clear water. The Prochem design of axial-flow impeller was shown to fully suspend solids at only one-quarter of the power requireabyan inclined-blade turbine of similar size. The axial-flow pattern produced was responsible for the more uniform vertical concentration profile of suspended beads produced by the Prochem design. These measurements verified the observations of other researchers that the rate of reaction is not affected by the ;design of impeller provided that al the solids are fully suspended. The Prochem design of impeller therefore achieved the same reaction rate as the conventional turbine at a quarter of the power input. The atrition rates of activated carbon could be correlated, in terms of the energy absorbed, by the same equation for al the impellers. Higher concentrations of activated carbon increased the amount of carbon fines produced. These results emphasize the importance of designing mixers for minimum power consumption.

The use of testwork to establish an economically feasible separating plant has been a long established practice in the mineral processing industry. However, uncertainties in orebody characteristics and equipment/plant operation can have a significant impact on the separation performance of a given project. This paper explores the impact of uncertainties derived during testwork at key processing stages on the overall performance of mineral processing flowsheets. Case studies for both mineral sand and iron ore projects will be used to illustrate the concepts studied in this paper.

To the members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy I have audited the annual financial statements of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy set out on pages 641 to 644 for the year ended 30 June 2006. These annual financial statements are the responsibility of the Institute?s Council members. My responsibility is to express an opinion on these annual financial statements based on my audit. Scope I conducted my audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. Those standards require that I plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the annual financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes: ?examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the annual financial statements, ?assessing the accounting policies used and significant estimates made by management, and ?evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. I believe that my audit provides a reasonable basis for my opinion. Audit opinion In my opinion, the annual financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Institute at 30 June 2006 and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice appropriate to the Institute. The purpose of this paper is to develop an expert system for hydraulic excavator and truck selection in surface mining. Hydraulic excavators and trucks are finding increasing applications in mining operations. Hydraulic excavators are extensively used especially when bringing electricity to rural areas is difficult and for small-scale mining. This paper describes an expert system, which selects the optimum hydraulic excavator truck configuration such that unit production cost is minimized and technical constraints such as geological, geotechnical and mining constraints are satisfied. The system has four modules: user interface, rules and an methods, databases and output module. The expert system in this study is developed within KappaPC shell. It supports object-orientated technology for the MS Windows environment. The software provides a very useful tool to practitioners, saving time and cost. Equipment selection is a recurring and expensive problem of mine planning and often involves interdisciplinary experts from different fields. It is very difficult and expensive to bring together all these experts. The capabilities of the expert system developed are illustrated in the paper. The software overcomes the difficulties of selecting the proper equipment for surface mining operations, which is very important, and results in substantial savings. Equipment databases for hydraulic excavators with 15-59 yd3 capacities and trucks with 35-360 tons are constructed and these databases are used to select the proper configuration. The paper serves to show the importance of both a geological model and geostatistical model that support one another in mineral resource evaluation. It highlights the advantage of reference models for the geometry, the geological, statistical and geostatistical models of various orebody types and introduces a method for quantifying the combined uncertainty in these models. The example presented reveals how the above levels of information can be applied to add value to a resource evaluation process. It is a generic example in that it is the technique of combining uncertainty in the geological model (boundaries) as well as the grade model to assess the overall risk in the estimation of the resource. Data from the coal industry is used to illustrate the techniques. The geological uncertainty is considered via categorical simulations and these are combined with simulations of the variables (grades, thickness,) being estimated in the resource. The simulation techniques used are based on the application of GSLIB software1and a general discussion of the two simulation processes is included. In conclusion the paper demonstrates how the results of two types of conditional sequential simulation can be combined to produce confidence limits that take both uncertainties into consideration. This technique does not replace the resource estimation; it serves as an additional tool to quantify confidence in the resource evaluation model. The topics considered in this contribution are in terms of continuous improvement of mineral resource evaluation.

The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits in South Africa are the largest in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular ore bodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Crush pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. These pillars are designed to fail and the residual strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the in situ measurement, of stress within a Merensky pillar from Impala Platinum. These measurements were used to derive a stress-strain curve that includes pre and post failure behaviour. 2D FLAC modelling, with strain softening, was done to investigate how damage expands into the hanging- and/or footwall. Although the so-called ?squat? effect is always present, the modelling suggests that it does not dominate the pillar system behaviour at larger width to height ratios. Punching of the pillar into the hanging- and/or footwall increasingly controls the pillar system behaviour with larger width to height ratios. The paper investigates the behaviour of a system that incorporates the immediate hanging- and footwall, as well as the pillar itself.

The fundamental ideas of Computer Aided Lignite Mining (CALM) with respect to hardware and software used at Rheinbraun are explained and outlined in detail. The computers used in the main data processing department and in the different departments in the mines are described. Special emphasis is laid upon the network connecting the computers at different places for data-exchange. Concerning technical applications, the main facilities of CALM are deposit and pit modelling, complex geomechanic computations and mass calculations, data recording from the production process in the pits and refining plants, and detailed information and planning systems for water management and mining equipment. Concerning administrative applications, the main facilities of the software are the accounting system with cost controlling and planning, the materials management system with stock control, forward planning and computer supported order procesing, a system for the administration of property within and surrounding the mines, and systems for personnel administration and payroll. The various software systems developed for these application and the influence of data processing technique, such as data base management and the interconnection of data processing systems, are demonstrated.

"In copper solvent extraction, aqueous-in-organic entrainment results in the carry-over of unwanted species into the electrowinning process with negative cost implications. The need to bleed is increased and the purity of the copper cathode is potentially compromised, depending on the impurities being transferred (Cl, NO3, Fe, Mn). In some cases, entrainment results in elevated levels of manganese in the electrolyte which can cause oxidative conditions to develop and degradation of the organic phase. Degraded organic phase detrimentally affects the physical performance of the copper solvent extraction process, contributing to even higher aqueous-in-organic entrainment. Aqueous entrainment may be minimized through good operating practices and maintenance of the organic quality, but the accurate measurement of entrainment remains a challenge. This paper presents coalescing devices designed to provide more exact measurements of aqueous-in-organic entrainment. IntroductionMany copper solvent extraction (SX) plants experience high aqueous-in-organic (A-in-O) entrainments but are unaware of the extent of the problem because entrainment is often not measured. Aqueous entrainment results in the carry-over of unwanted species into the electrowinning (EW) process and the need to bleed to maintain acceptable concentrations in the electrolyte. The costs associated with the bleed are exacerbated in copper plants where aqueous entrainment levels are high. Other than these direct costs, there are operational consequences of the build-up of certain species in the EW circuit that can have deleterious effects on plant performance.Minimizing aqueous entrainment in operating plants requires an understanding of the factors that affect entrainment levels. Both chemical and operational influences are discussed in this paper. The difficulty of obtaining a representative sample makes it challenging to obtain an accurate measure of aqueous entrainment from a continuous process like SX. Coalescing devices used to get a more precise measurement of A-in-O entrainment are useful to complete mass balances around the SX circuits. Alternatively, mass balances can be used to estimate aqueous entrainments and are helpful as a tool to troubleshoot operations with a view to improving plant performance."

Lebowa Platinum Mines has been in operation since the late 1960s and is a relatively small producer compared to Anglo Platinum?s other operations. The mine has never had substantial capital investment to expand its production scale even though its resource base is estimated in excess of 100 years at current mining rates. It is forecast that the mine will become unprofitable after 2008 due to the workings of the ageing infrastructure, the Merensky Reef operations being further from the shafts, decrease in productivity and increase in operating costs. In order to reverse the forecast decline in operational inefficiencies and profitability the replacement of the Merensky Reef operations at Vertical and UM2 shafts with the development of a 120 Ktpm Brakfontein Merensky Reef Mines is in progress. This paper covers the operational readiness framework developed from the control budget estimate and outlines an integrated business process adopted to ensure that the requirements of the investment proposal are met. The operational readiness framework, which addresses the transition process, will ensure that at operational start-up, all appropriate operating systems, procedures, information and legal requirements are in place, whereas the business integration process will aim to develop and sustain an organization with the appropriate infrastructure and workforce equipped with the necessary skills to meet Brakfontein?s requirement, and where possible embark on an optimized accelerated production initiative to ensure that the objectives of the investment proposal are sustained. "The Anglo American Platinum Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) is the largest producer of nickel cathode in South Africa. It treats slow-cooled matte to recover a platinum group metal-containing magnetic fraction for downstream processing and a nonmagnetic fraction to produce nickel and copper cathode, cobalt sulphate, and sodium sulphate. The refinery was recently expanded from 21 to 33 kt/a nickel. During the ramp-up phase, the sulphur removal section was found to be a constraint to throughput. Nickel hydroxide is precipitated from nickel spent electrolyte by addition of sodium hydroxide, and filtration of the nickel precipitate allows sulphur to be removed from the circuit as aqueous sodium sulphate in the filtrate. The filtration fluxes were found to be limiting the circuit’s capacity. An obvious solution would have been to install additional filtration capacity at significant capital cost and long lead times. RBMR chose rather to first initiate a collaborative project with Anglo American Technical Solutions to better understand the impact of process conditions on filtration characteristics and to evaluate whether the filtration flux could be increased by improving the quality of the nickel precipitate.A deeper understanding of nickel hydroxide precipitation chemistry and kinetics in the context of high nickel and sodium hydroxide concentrations was developed, guided by precipitation theory and confirmed by laboratory tests and plant observations. It was found that the filtration rate could be significantly improved by modifying the precipitate characteristics. A new precipitation process was engineered and retrofitted into the existing plant. Since start-up of the new precipitation system, the available capacity of the sulphur removal section has more than doubled, and control of the process has improved with the better agitation. This paper describes the theory and results used to design the new agitation system, as well as the impact of the change on capital investment, operability, and process efficiency."

"Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

In the chloride process for TiO2 pigment production, various titania feedstocks (i.e. rutile, synthetic rutile, slag, and upgraded titania slag (UGS)) are chlorinated in a fluidized bed reactor with petroleum coke at temperatures between 1000°C and 1100ºC to yield gaseous metal chlorides. Although feedstock preference is largely based on TiO2 content, feedstock physical properties (i.e. density, sphericity, size distribution, and porosity) differ; these differences will affect fluidization behaviour and can inadvertently affect conversion efficiency. For example, a high carryover from the reactor reduces particle residence time and decreases conversion rates. Owing to dwindling rutile reserves in the world, most chloride producers are forced to feed blends of feedstocks to their chlorinators; and so it becomes important to understand whether blends have an effect on the hydrodynamic properties of the bed. This paper describes the physical characterization of different feeds and the determination of the elutriation constants for slag, rutile, synthetic rutile, and a blend (i.e. 50 wt% rutile, 50 wt% slag).A common feature of the tests was that particles finer than 75 µm tended more than any other size to be elutriated. The tested rutile, classified as a Geldart Group B material, had the lowest carryover, whereas the slags had the highest. Interestingly, the elutriation constant ([ki]) of the blend is lower than those of either of its individual components.
