Potential errors in XRF analysis are discussed and investigated with specific reference to the analysis of ilmenite samples. A selection of ilmenite samples was chosen and prepared using two XRF preparation techniques: pressed powder pellet and unroasted fusion bead. The merits of the two methods have been discussed in this paper for ilmenite analysis by XRF. Recommendations have been made regarding the use of pressed powder pellets especially with regard to the mineralogical effects that were evidenced during this investigation. The fusion bead technique was found to be far more accurate and able to meet short turnaround requirements provided the calibration methodology used is specific to the grade of samples analyzed.

Crushing plant managers need to assess, manage, and communicate the environmental impact induced by their crushing plant operations as a step towards the sustainable development of the company. However, performing reliable environmental impact calculations of crushing plants can be challenging when the availability of operational and emission data is low, and when the company’s environmental expertise is not adapted and connected to plant operations (or does not currently exist). To address these challenges, this paper proposes a practical approach where the lifecycle assessment methodology (LCA) is combined with process simulations in a web-based tool. To describe what functionality such a tool should have to be incorporated into a company’s workflow, the system that surrounds a crushing plant is analysed. Further, a case study with a three-stage crushing plant is introduced to showcase how the simulated power draw results produced with the beta version of the tool can be compared to measured sensor data from the crushing plant for one operational day. The results indicate that the simulation tool can provide an adequate estimation of the specific energy for the different material fractions and give an overview of the environmental impact of the process caused by electricity and explosives consumption. Plant managers and operators can use this tool to calculate the environmental impacts of their plant and simulate how different operational strategies influence them. The concept of underground ore processing, in which valuable ore and waste are separated at a coarse particle size to improve the economics of operations and minimise the environmental impact, seems attractive from a sustainability perspective. Perceived benefits of such an operation include energy and cost savings due to a reduced hoisting load, a reduced footprint of surface operations, and using material for backfill that has not been contaminated by process chemicals. Progress in the South African mining industry in this area has however been below expectation, and opportunities for underground processing in deep, narrow reef operations were therefore explored by an Excel-based simulation with sensor-based sorting (SBS) as concentration technology. Various PGM mining scenarios incorporating factors such as the mining rate, depth of operation, and effects of dilution and particle size on the metallurgical efficiency, were compared. Whilst these initial results can be regarded as indicative only, they have shown that the economics of such an operation are driven by selective mining at significantly higher rates than achievable with conventional methods. Also, the cost of preparing, conveying and placing rock backfill will need to be lower than that of hoisting waste and depositing it on a surface dump. Another aspect to be addressed is whether ore sorting machines would be able to operate under harsh conditions underground and what provision would need to be made to ensure their efficient operation. Further investigations should focus on refining costs, incorporating environmental considerations in the modelling of economics and sustainability, and compare greenfields with brownfield scenarios. Open pit slope stability analyses for large scale instabilities are often carried out using limit equilibrium, finite element or finite difference computer programs. All of these require empirical estimates of rock mass shear strength when calibrated values are not available, which is a common occurrence. A common method of estimating rock mass shear strength is the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which often over- or underestimates rock mass shear strength when used in limit equilibrium or elastic linearly plastic slope stability analyses, resulting in published alternative estimates for the coefficients of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. This paper investigates the differences between limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic slope stability analysis based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The investigation consisted of a comparison of 3840 RS2 finite element analysis models completed with strain softening, and 216 Slide2 limit equilibrium models. The models were used to evaluate a methodology to determine equivalent limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic shear strength parameters that provide the same stable slope angles and instability back break distances as the more representative strain softening stress analysis methods. This paper presents the methodology and compiles the results into design charts and equations for equivalent limit equilibrium Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters, that simplify calibration against actual case studies. The results compare well with older empirical shear strength estimates, however, a detailed calibration of the results against case studies will need to be carried out. The analysis also did not consider pore pressure effects; this is left for future publication.

INTRODUCTION Acclimatization of the labour force to heat is an integral aspect of gold mining in South Africa. A recent survey revealed that about 250,000 Bantu mine workers require to be acclimatized to heat each year. Until 1965 men were acclimatized by means of one of the Chamber of Mines methods (introduced by the Human Sciences Laboratory in 1953). This type of acclimatization was carried out underground where men shovelled rock in hot stopes under careful supervision. However, it has become increasingly difficult in the last few years for mines to provide underground the conditions of work and environmental heat required for adequate acclimatization to heat. In examining an alternative to acclimatization in underground hot stopes, the Human Sciences Laboratory carried out a trial in 1965 of acclimatization in an air-conditioned climatic room on the surface of a mine. The new procedures developed from this trial have been so successful that there are today 26 climatic rooms on different mines. These rooms have been built following a design proposed by Mr Hodgson of the National Mechanical Engineering Research Institute1. Approximately 85 per cent of the total number of men being acclimatized each year are put through the new procedures in these climatic rooms. This paper gives an account of the problems which arose and how they were solved, the inter-relationship between physical conditioning and climatic room acclimatization, the prodecures developed for elimination of labourers with low maximum oxygen intakes, and the advantages of climatic room acclimatization. CLIMATIC ROOMS The majority of the climatic rooms (twenty) have been built on the surface, but a number (six) of mines preferred to establish their acclimatization centres underground in order to decrease the initial costs involved in the construction of such facilities. These underground climatic rooms are usually located near shaft stations in redundant haulages and they can accommodate from 200 to 400 labourers, thus eliminating the need for multiple acclimatization shifts. Figs. 1-4 illustrate various aspects of a surface climatic room. PROBLEMS WHICH AROSE IN INTRODUCING CLIMATIC ROOM ACCLIMATISATION There were four main problems which arose in connection with the introduction of the new method. These were: (i) The type and rate of work to be used. (ii) The air conditions required to obtain optimum acclimatization. (iii) The duration of exposure to heat each day and the total number of days of acclimatization. (iv) The methods of cooling labourers with high body temperatures. Shovelling rock would have been the desirable type of physical work to employ, but the air-conditioned space required to accommodate large numbers of men and the difficulty in standardizing the work rate in shovelling led to the decision to employ instead the work procedure used by the Human Sciences Laboratory in acclimatizing men in the Laboratory. This is the lifting of the body weight against gravity when men step on and off a bench. It has the advantage that large numbers of men can work physically at the required rate in a relatively small space (120 men can be accommodated in an area of 70 ft by 21 ft) and the cost of construction and ventilation of the climatic rooms is thereby reduced. Also the work rate can be standardized by varying the height of the stepping benches in relation to the individuals' body weights. The next problem was the air condition to be used in the climatic rooms. The Laboratory's research experience in acclimatization led it to choose an air temperature of 89°F (with the air almost saturated with water vapour) and an average velocity of air movement of 100 fpm. This air condition was combined with a work rate of 1,560 ft lb/min (oxygen consumption 1.0 litre/min) on day 1, and the work rate was increased gradually over the period of acclimatization to reach a work rate of 3,120 ft lb/min (oxygen consumption 1.6 litres/min) on day 9.

"Despite the pre-eminence of the Jwaneng Diamond Mine as the world’s richest diamond mine, the discovery story has long been clouded in mystery. This is the 45-year old untold story of the Jwaneng discovery and contemporaneous Bechuanaland/Botswana political and socioeconomic history. Diamond exploration by De Beers in Bechuanaland began in 1955, with the first true kimberlite discovery near Letlhakane in 1967, before Clifford’s Rule was applied and before the use of indicator mineral chemistry. Surface deflation soil sampling and bioturbation by termites was the foundation for exploration into the Kalahari. The 1962 reconnaissance programme south of Jwaneng had failed to make any discoveries. Improved sampling methods were applied to the Kalaharicovered areas in 1969 and positive results were received by year-end. The Whateley’s Wish percussion drill-hole in December 1972 was confirmed as Jwaneng 2424D/K2 with drill core in early 1973. Jumper drills were required to penetrate the Kalahari sand cover. Diamond resources were demonstrated despite multiple technical problems. IntroductionThe Jwaneng Diamond Mine is, by value, the world’s richest diamond mine. Harry Oppenheimer is quoted as saying that Jwaneng is ‘the most important primary deposit found anywhere in the world since the discovery at Kimberley more than a century ago.’ (Taylor III, 1982) The mine opened in 1982 after some nine years of evaluation and construction since discovery in February 1973. Debswana (2017) states that 2015 production was 7.87 Mt of ore from which 10.408 million carats were recovered at a grade of 132 carats per 100 t (cpht). Although the value is not reported, it was noted that Jwaneng contributes 60–70% of Debswana’s total revenue from all mines, including Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane (Debswana, 2017)."

"A methodology is proposed to develop an optimization model to understand the impact of transporting minerals, from mines to the final destination, on air quality. Recently, there has been increasing concern about the combined effects of multiple activities over many years, and the regional environmental changes brought about by a single project. Environmental issues in the iron ore industry have highlighted the need to broaden the cumulative impact assessment. In this study, we simulated the optimal routes and quantity of materials needed to meet the destination plant demand based upon environment constraints (level of air pollution), as well as the cost of transportation and availability of materials. Multiple scenarios were developed to analyse the effects of changes in routes, alternative transport system (or multi-modal split), traffic congestion, and the cumulative impacts on air quality. The air quality impact zones of the study area were demarcated using a GIS technique. The expected outcome of the study is the selection of a suitable transport system for a particular site with the least impact on air quality, including the transportation route, relative to the minimum cost of transportation of the minerals from the mines to their final destination. The proposed methodology is evaluated with a case study. IntroductionIn India, the process of environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been focused primarily on the local impacts of projects, without considering regional environmental effects. Environmental clearances for proposed projects are based on reports of local impacts. However, any developmental project poses a potential risk to the environment as a whole, and not just in the immediate vicinity of the project. Recently, there has been increased concern about the combined effects of multiple activities over many years—the regional environmental changes due to development of a single project (Dutta, Mahatha, and De, 2004). Environmental issues throughout the country, particularly in the iron ore industry, have emphasized the need to broaden the analysis to include the combined impacts, or those forecast for a proposed region, on an existing environment. The most significant adverse environmental consequences of iron ore transportation are the deterioration of biodiversity and air quality (Kumar and Ajay, 2015)."

In South Africa, diamonds are mined predominantly in rural areas. Kimberlitic diamonds dominate in Limpopo and the Northern Cape Provinces whereas alluvial diamonds are mainly sourced from the North West and Northern Cape Provinces. There are a few large and medium sized diamond companies (De Beers, Petra Diamonds, Trans Hex, Rockwell and Alexkor). There are many smaller companies involved in diamond mining, mostly alluvial diamond mines. The nature of alluvial diamond deposits is that they are aerially more extensive and thus their surface impacts are more pervasive: The recent downturn in diamond prices has resulted in the sudden cessation of mining at many small and medium diamond operations. The South African Mining Charter requires all mines, including diamond mines, to subscribe' to .the following empowerment objectives:

This paper sets out to consider a specific type of corrosion protection system, which is referred to as a Duplex Coating system. The dictionary describes a duplex system as consisting of two elements or a “twofold” composition. The duplex system described in this presentation is such a two-part corrosion protection coating, viz, hot dip galvanizing as the firm base or primer, followed by a top paint system designed to combat severe corrosive environmental conditions encountered in nature. In principle, the duplex system is a cost effective and balanced, designed coating that is suited to the environmental conditions and service life requirements.

A large new underground platinum mining project required that all different mining options were investigated during an option study before proceeding to the prefeasibility stage of the project. The capital project team identified 21 different options requiring investigation. These options considered 10 different access methods and 4 different mining methods. Each of the 21 options required a mine design, a valid production schedule, and the associated economics in order to facilitate a comparison on project Net Present Value (NPV) and other metrics. The project sponsors required this work to be completed in 3 months and therefore the project team decided to adopt an object-oriented modelling approach as implemented by Cyest Corporation. This would allow all 21 options to be valuated within the tight time frame due to the generation and re-use of templates. Standard objects were configured into templates containing the mine layout, design, and scheduling logic. These templates could then be assembled into a model to represent the option being investigated. The adoption of rules-based design and production scheduling then allowed for the rapid generation of a valid production schedule for each option with different iterations of varying production ramp-up and mining efficiency assumptions. The activity-based operating costs, labour, and capital were also linked to the standard templates such as a half level or barrel, which were then replicated to represent the overall mine structure for each option under consideration. Using this approach for each option, a full production schedule was produced per mining activity, the operating costs were calculated using activity-based costing, an infrastructure capital expenditure estimate was determined, the development capital requirements costed, and an overall NPV determined. This options study was completed in an unprecedented 10 weeks and a recommendation was put through to the Business to take three of the options to the next study phase.

The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. "The favorable mining conditions in the United States of America that resulted in the development of the highly productive room and pillar systems are largely disappearing. Increasing mechanization, poorer natural conditions, and greater concern for health, safety and environment gave impetus to the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. These regulations prescribe more stringent requirements in face ventilation and mine air distribution, necessitating significant changes in existing ventilation systems. Stringent mandatory standards were applied to respirable dust control for the first time, and simultaneous control of both gas and dust has affected the face as well as primary distribution, most notably on haulage entries.The size and complexity of the present-day mining operations, and the need to evaluate various system changes in a limited time, call for scientific methods in mine planning. In this paper, the authors trace the previous applications of computers to mine ventilation planning and discuss the results of their work in applying a ventilation simulator developed at Penn State. The paper includes an analysis of current trends and suggestions for future research and development."

Mineral processing plants include different stages like crushing, grinding, classification and concentration, all of which have partially affect the final product. To identify and solve the related problems of each stage, process audition should be carried out continuously to find the major solutions of improving product and decreasing the maintenance and operating costs. The Iranian Gohar-Zamin iron ore beneficiation plant consists of equipment such as gyratory and cone crushers, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), ball mill, dry and wet double-deck vibrating screens, hydrocyclones cluster, magnetic drum separators, thickener and horizontal vacuum belt filters. The defects of initial design as well as current non-standard operating conditions of equipment were monitored and detected and the opportunities for process optimisation were presented as follows: establishing the control loop of power draw for cone crushers, the modification of feeding chute in cone crushers to minimise the non-uniform wear of parts, removing segregation in the fresh feed bin and screen’s circulating load chute in order to provide the proper feed to HPGR, reducing wear rate on HPGR rolls surfaces, decreasing the amount of rejected materials in screen, equalising the solid content and particle size distribution (PSD) of feed in all magnetic drum separators and equalising the PSD of hydrocyclones overflow. This paper provides a guideline for the mineral processing industry to focus its efforts on process design to deliver the efficiency with minimum capital costs. "In selecting a suitable method to sink a vertical shaft for underground access, a number of constraints influence the ultimate decision of where and how to develop the shaft, not least among these being safety, development and construction time, and cost. Two additional considerations stand out: these being geotechnical conditions and technology, the latter taking into account existing underground access. Assuming a project for which an existing underground excavation is available, it is tempting to build a shaft sinking project from the outset based on the raiseboring method, which has the potential to be the safest, fastest, and least expensive method provided that geotechnical conditions permit.And therein lies the rub: regardless of project time or cost constraints, when it comes to raiseboring a long (say, greater than 500 m), large diameter (greater than 4.5 m) shaft, the rock mass conditions ultimately dictate what method of shaft sinking will be feasible. Over the course of several studies for a particular project, several geotechnical analyses were carried out specifically for the purpose of developing a shaft by raiseboring. Risk analysis and experience showed that where the rock mass conditions indicated an unacceptably high risk potential, an alternative method needed to be considered, even if this meant increasing both the time and financial requirements.In this paper we present an overview of geotechnical investigation practices for shaft sinking. Decisionmaking thresholds for raiseboring or other methods of shaft sinking are discussed, including probabilities of failure, empirical rock mass classification, basic wedge failure, and back-analysis of a failed case. The design of appropriate support, and analysis of relative safety benefits for various shaft sinking methods, falls outside the scope of this work, and will be presented in a separate paper.IntroductionThe potential for rock mass failure during shaft development and construction affects whether a project is completed safely, on time and on budget. During the course of several studies to establish ventilation shafts for an underground expansion project, geotechnical analyses of rock mass stability and failure potential were carried out. A large opencast gold mining company in Africa had just completed a feasibility study for the expansion of the operations. A traditional net present value project valuation methodology had been used that showed a very positive net present value (NPV). The project team had conducted a qualitative risk assessment that identified and logged all potential project risks and had subjectively incorporated ?risk? via the discount rate and other assumption contingencies around gold price expectations, operating parameters etc. Management requested that an independent quantitative risk modelling approach be adopted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of risk on the overall project valuation and confidence level in the final valuation. A detailed project valuation model was configured in the Carbon Modelling Technology and the stochastic modelling module used to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of historical operational performance data relating to actual achievements versus planned and budget determined the historical variability of the underlying parameters as well as variance to budget. This was done at a detailed level for mining rates and costs, processing rate, costs and recovery, and other operational efficiency measures. External market assumptions relating to gold price, exchange rate, and inflation were modelled and the dependency between them modelled using a copula. This case study will demonstrate the approach taken to building and populating the quantitative risk model and the overall results of the Monte Carlo simulation. The final valuation demonstrated that the project had a 44 percent probability of an NPV less than zero i.e. 44 percent chance of project finance loss.

GEOSCANs on belt analysers have been widely utilised in iron ore for nearly two decades. Since the first installations in 2003, the availability of accurate and reliable grade data has become standardised across iron ore mines in the Northern Cape, where various streams are monitored continuously to ensure the optimal functioning of plants. Assmang Khumani has been at the forefront of technology adoption and has implemented 19 GEOSCANs at various locations throughout the plant, monitoring run-of-mine, stockyard feed, beneficiation plant feeds, and products. Over the years, collaborative advances in the technology have allowed for numerous benefits and gains to be made. In recent times, there has been a concerted effort on the development of analysis for phosphorus in the material flows, and based on Scantech's experience in the phosphate industry, this element has now been calibrated to achieve statistically acceptable and repeatable accuracies for real time analysis of this element on many of Khumani's GEOSCAN analysers. This paper provides an overview of GEOSCAN use at Khumani, while focusing on the development of phosphorus analysis. A case study of analysis results is presented for a range of analysers that have been calibrated for this element, as well as a discussion on the benefits obtained as a result of this analysis. The magnetic field characteristics due to electromagnetic stirring in the secondary cooling zone of an extra-thick slab during continuous casting are numerically determined using Maxwell's equations, with particular emphasis on the distribution of magnetic induction intensity and electromagnetic force, as well as the influence of process parameters on the magnetic field. The orientation of the electromagnetic force is the same when the electromagnetic stirrers at the 30° and 60° posistions of the arc-shaped slab are powered in the same direction; otherwise, the orientation is opposite. The magnetic induction at the centre of the section of the stirrer's central axis at the 30° positio, as well as the current, frequency, and fitting formulae, are as follows: B = {0.075I.(1/A)-0.3} mT and B = {-1.75f.(1/Hz)+22} mT. The electromagnetic force and current fitting formula at the central point of the B-B section is F = {0.03168I2.(1/A2)-03.762I.(1/A)+326.7} N/m3, and the fitting formula of electromagnetic force and frequency at the centre point is divided into two segments. The first takes the form of a parabola: = {-21((f-4.3).(1/Hz)2)+970} N/m3, and the second segment is negative linear: F = {-1.65f.(1/Hz)+51.5} N/m3.
