Provide better ventilation for mines by reducing air leakage around stoppings. Approach Most stoppings are constructed of concrete blocks and trowelled-on mortar and are not very airtight. Bureau of Mines research has shown that brushing on modified mortar containing fiberglass and/or other additives, that enhance strength and adhesion, minimizes air leakage around and through the stoppings. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to determine the feasibility of chlorine-oxygen leaching for treating low-grade zinc sul-fide flotation concentrates. Recovery of zinc sulfides by flotation from complex fine-grained sulfide ores is substantially higher in low-grade bulk sulfide concentrates than in the high-grade cleaned concen-trates required for smelter feed. However, there is no commercial process in the United States for the treatment of low-grade bulk zinc sul-fide concentrates. Leaching experiments using reactors of 500-mL and I-gal capacity were conducted on a bulk concentrate containing 19.3 pct Zn, 35.6 pct Fe, and 39.4 pct S. The effects of pressure, temperature, and percent solids on extraction were investigated. The chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure showed promise for treating the concentrates. Zinc extractions of 95 pct or more were obtained by leaching at 50 pct solids in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 C. Zinc extractions by leaching with chlorine followed by oxygen at reactor pressures of 50 to 100 psig were independent of pressure.

Tests have recently been conducted by the Bureau of wines on the ignition hazard of exposing heated filaments of electric mine lam bulbs in an explosive mixture of methane and air. This investigation was undertaken in order to settle a question that had arisen in connection with the safety of miners? electric lamps. For several years, in view of former studies made by the Bureau and reported in Bulletin 524, the fact that the heated filaments of even low voltage, lour candlepower bulbs constitute a danger was generally accepted by the Bureau's engineers. These early tests, as well as subsequent tests, were conducted with Pittsburgh natural was as the testing medium.

Approach Develop a low-profile dust collector system which can be mounted on the boom of a continuous miner. How It Works When coal is mined with a milling head continuous miner, a substantial amount of coal dust (respirable and non-respirable) escapes the dust suppression sprays at the cutter head. This can cause poor visibility around the cutting head and can expose the workers to high levels of respirable dust. A practical means of removing this dust is with a scrubber mounted directly on the mining machine. This Part describes a mine pager phone to public telephone interconnect sys tem that permits mine paging telephones to be selectively interconnected with the public telephone system, as illustrated by Figure 1. This interconnect concept was first conceived and demonstrated in breadboard form by H. E. Parkinson of Industrial Hazards and Communications, PMSRC, as one means for providing improved emergency and off-hours communications. The third-generation prototype unit described in this Part was designed and fabricated by Arthur D. Little, Inc. This unit is a small desk-top or wall-mounted unit that connects directly to both the public telephone line and the mine pager phone line, and requires no modifications to either the public dial telephone or mine pager phones. As part of this task, ADL also built, under a very compressed time schedule, a second-generation prototype unit suitable for reliable demonstration of the interconnect concept during the Bureau's technology transfer seminar on mine communications in March 1973. * A major objective of the design of the third-generation unit described in this Part was that it be compatible with present mine pager phone systems utilizing DC voltage on the mine phone line to activate the phone loudspeakers. Therefore, this unit was designed to operate in a push- to-talk, push-to-listen mode that accommodates the inherent design differences and operation modes of the mine phones of different manufacturers. Though this push- to- talk, push- to-listen mode of operation may seem slightly unusual at first sight, we have found it is easily learned by new users. However, mine phone manufacturers wishing to expand their product lines with such an interconnect system will probably find it to their advantage to customize the design of this system to their particular mine phones, thereby utilizing the unique attributes offered by their individual product lines. This customization should not be difficult, and Section III below suggests some of the features that can be easily added to future designs. Detailed parts lists and circuit schematics for the present third-generation proto- type system can be obtained from the system manual submitted to PMSRC and placed on public file.

An electrochemical method to selectively determine sulfur dioxide in the presence of sulfur trioxide was investigated. A hydrophobic gas-permeable membrane separates the gas sample solution from an internal filling solution containing a fixed quantity of chloride ion and a sufficiently large excess of sodium bisulfite so that its concentration may be considered constant. Sulfur dioxide diffuses through the membrane to dissolve in the internal filling solution and liberates an equivalent quantity of hydrogen ions. The electromotive force between a precision-ground, flat-ended pH electrode, which acts as the sensing element, and a chloride sensing electrode, which acts as the reference element, gives a direct measure of S02 in the gas sample solution. Calibration curves in water, tetrachloromercurate (TCM) , and citrate buffer absorption solutions were closely parallel with slopes in their linear segments, ranging from 57 to 52 mv/decade of S02 concentration. The slopes compare reasonably well with the theoretically expected slope of 58 millivolts at 21° C. The water standard curve was linear with respect to the logarithm of S02 concentration from 1 to 1,000 ppm S02; the TCM standard curve was linear from 10 to 2,000 ppm S02; and the citrate standard curve was linear from 30 to 5,000 ppm S02' The high efficiency and nontoxicity of citrate favor it as a substitute for the conventionally used TCM in the absorption solution.

Improve the safety of mine workers by developing a sensitive ground-fault relay system capable of detecting and isolating low level ground faults and thereby minimize the danger of electrocution. Approach Inadvertent, direct contact with energized conductors in underground coal mines is a major cause of electrocutions. Although relay systems designed to protect workers against such fatal accidents do exist in some industries, there are no effective ground-fault-sensing relay systems that address the special problems presented by power systems designed for U.S. mines. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to design and construct a sensitive ground-fault relay for use with low-voltage, alternating current (ac) mine electrical systems. Such a relay, sensing current leakage or faults in an electrical system, would send a trip signal to a circuit interrupting device which would then shut down power.

A continued rise in construction activity in 1941 forecasts further increases in the demand for building materials of mineral origin, Recent studies by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, reveal that sales of mine and quarry products and their derivatives as a class have followed the long-term trend of construction activity in the past and are benefiting now by the upswing in all types of building. At present most building materials of mineral origin are holding their own in the competitive arena. A few are slipping behind, but others have forged fax ahead. Prominent among those that have surpassed general construction activity since 1925 are sand, gravel, and crushed stone (used in concrete and road metal and railroad ballast) and cement. Both building stone and roofing slate have followed the building curve closely, although in the last few years sales of roofing slate have risen above the curve and sales of building stone have dropped below it. Clay products and building lime, on the other hand, have lagged behind the general procession. Gypsum sales likewise dropped behind, but during the last few years, this industry, thanks to the wider acceptance of its newer products, has staged a marked recovery so that it now stands in about the same relation to total construction activity as it did is 1927-25.

Investigations at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station have shown that the satisfactory operation of a flame safety lamp depends not only upon proper design and assembly of the lamp but upon the kind of fuel used, and that much of the trouble experienced with permissible flame safety lamps at mines is due to the common use of motor gasolines, none of which is suitable in the present types of permissible flame safety lamps. This report gives the results of a limited study to determine what satisfactory fuels are available, the specification limits of such fuels, and to suggest modifications of assembly and care of the lamps to improve performance with any satisfactory fuel.

The data contained in this report were obtained incidental to the Bureau of Mine's investigation of the lime-soda sinter process as applied to the recovery of alumina from siliceous bauxite, kaolin, and other high aluminous materials. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of aluminum from domestic low-grade ores. The Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md., conducted laboratory and pilot-plant investigations of the recover-y of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Reports by the College Park staff covering the recovery of alumina from these sources have been published. The lime-soda sinter process involves the sintering of the finely ground siliceous bauxite or clay with limestone and soda ash in a rotary kiln. During the sintering the alumina supposedly reacts with the soda ash to form soluble sodium aluminate and the silica combines with the lime to form the insoluble orthosilicate. In the early stages of the investigation it was considered desirable to know the temperatures at which the phase changes occurred during the sintering operation. The total time involved in the passage of any given portion of the charge through the kiln was 28 minutes. The exposure time of the charge to temperatures above 600° C. (decomposition temperature of kaolinite) was, roughly, half the total. The exposure to the full temperature of the kiln, 1,100° C was only 3 minutes. (Subsequently, the maximum kiln temperature and retention time were increased.)

[Frequent accidents in the transportation and. handling off petroleum and its more volatile products, serve as a reminder that this is indeed a hazardous undertaking and should always be conducted with due caution. On October 4, 1920, vapors in the held of the British tanks steamer G. R, Crowe became ignited and, caused an explosion which, it is reported, killed 5 men, injured. 40 others and endangered the lives of some 300 more. On November 10, 1920 the Morgan, Line freighter El Mundo was almost totally sot destroyed in New York harbor by fire caused by an explosion of gases in a fuel-oil tank. These two disastrous explosions emu emphasize the ever- present danger attending the use of petroleum products. This is also shown by the frequent occurrence of minor fires and explosions, caused by careless handling of baseline, which result in loss of life or serious injury to railroad employees, to oil-tank drivers, and to individuals in various walls of life. Statistics indicate that the lighter cuts of petroleum products, because of fire hazards, are dangerous, and are so considered by the railroad and other transportation companies. According o the Bureau of Explosives (Bar-eau of Explosives Report No. 13 p. 7) during 1919 transportation of gasoline in the United States resulted in 172 accidents, causing 2 deaths and 31 injuries, and a property loss to the extent of $687,966. Among the causes of ignition, an open light in the vicinity of the container stands out most prominently.]

The results of a preliminary investigation of compressive strength versus length-diameter (L/D) ratios of potash specimens and the statistical treatment of the data are summarized in this report. The purpose of the study was to evaluate a laboratory method for obtaining estimates of the strength of potash pillars during robbing operations. The specific objectives of this preliminary investigation were to test the method and the reliability (confidence limits) of the data, and to determine the number of additional specimens necessary for given confidence limits. The specimens were taken from three sites at two mines in New Mexico. The statistical analyses included the determination of the confidence limits for the data and the number of additional specimens necessary to obtain confidence limits of ±500 and 100 psi. The testing method was found acceptable, and estimates of the comprehensive strength, within 1500 psi, could be obtained by testing about 110 additional specimens from the three sites. The compressive strength of the specimens tested fits an empirical equation of the type

Capital and operating costs were estimated using a wet suppression, fabric filter, and a combination system of the two for hypothetical hard rock stone crushing plants located in central Pennsylvania, operating at 300, 600, and 1,000 tons per hour. Fixed capital expenditure for the dust abatement systems ranged from $49,129 to $249,162. Annual operating costs for the dust abatement systems ranged from $8,394 to $46,606 (0.9 to 3.2 cents per ton). If these dust abatement systems are properly sized, installed, and maintained, efficiencies approaching 95 percent can be expected for reduction in weight of dust particles emitted before control.

A test program was conducted to determine the adequacy of molded case circuit breakers for dc electrical systems in coal mines. Mine electrical system parameters and the most severe operating conditions to be expected were determined. Tests of the interrupting capabilities of several molded case breakers were made under the worst conditions to be expected. Continuous and pulsed current carrying capability of the breakers was also investigated. Breakers from two different manufacturers passed all tests successfully. Based on the results of these tests, a set of guidelines for applying molded case breakers to dc systems has been prepared.

The Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. The mineralized sections of the core were sampled and assayed.

This Bureau of Mines study was made to investigate a possible method for selectively removing the Si02 component of silicate minerals and ores. Of specific interest were aluminum ores and zircon. Methods are described for removing Si02 from these ores as volatile silicon sulfides by treating the ore with sulfur and carbon; with sulfur, carbon, and a reducing gas; or with sulfur compounds and carbon. Comparative results are also given for the desilication of some of the ores with carbon alone to form volatile silicon monoxide. The silica component can be removed partially from bauxites at temperatures above the sublimation temperature of SiS (940° C) by treatment with carbon, sulfur, and methane; however, it is more difficult to remove the silicon from kyanite, manganese silicate, red muds from aluminum processing, kaolinite, lateritic nickel ores, and zircon. Complete desilication requires temperatures ranging from 1,100° C for bauxite to 1,450° C for zircon. Although the high temperatures required and the undesirable metal sulfides produced eliminate practical application of this method using present technology, the Bureau is reporting this data so that they will be available to future investigators.

Methane concentration peaks were measured by the Bureau of Mines at coal mine working faces during entry development. The statistical distribution of peaks was found to be normal or log normal depending on how well the methane was being mixed into the ventilation airstream. A normal distribution indicated good mixing, whereas a log-normal distribution indicated that mixing was poor. In addition, the "highest" peaks over selected intervals were found to fit a type I extreme-value distribution, a result similar to that obtained while mining longwall faces.
