It provides a starting point for personnel who have received or are receiving professional training, but do not have specific experience in laboratory procedures. With guidance, it also has application as a resource for technician training. The publication contains chapters on laboratory safety, feed-sample preparation, leaching, solids-liquid separation, and recovery from solution.

Lime is of tremendous importance to modern industries. In agriculture it is regarded as essential to the continued fertility of many important regions; in building it is indispensable, and in the many ramifications of the chemical industries it is so necessary and so widely employed that it has been designated "the king of all the bases." Figure 1 shows a general view of a modern lime plant producing more than 500 tons of lime daily. In 1924 the production of lime was reported from nearly every State in the Union and amounted to more than 4,000,000 tons, valued at, nearly $40,000,000. For a production of that magnitude between 8,000,000 and 9,000,000 tons of limestone are required. The many problems involved in winning this great quantity of raw material from the natural rock and preparing it for the kilns have in the past received little attention from any governmental agency. Therefore, in compliance with a request from representatives of the National Lime Association in 1922, the Bureau of Mines began a study of problems in limestone quarrying in an effort to advance more economical methods of operation and the utilization of waste material. Field studies were made at many quarries, and the information thus compiled, besides data already at hand from work in other branches of the stone industries, were disseminated to operators in the form of mimeographed Reports of Investigations, eight of which were issued at intervals during 1922, 1923, and 1924. A questionnaire was appended to each report, and quarry operators were invited to contribute additional information obtained as a result of their actual experience and observation. Operators of lime plants have been cordial in their responses and have supplied the bureau with much valuable information. From the data thus obtained, supplemented by later field studies, the revised reports have been combined to form the major part of this bulletin, which is believed fairly to represent present knowledge on the subject of quarrying limestone for lime manufacture.

The enormous and constantly increasing demand for limestone to supply a multitude of uses is a remarkable feature of the mineral industries. As approximately 130,000,000 tons of limestone are produced annually, it is not surprising that deposits at or near the surface are gradually being exhausted and that less advantageous supplies are being worked. Quarries are becoming deeper and wider year by year, and in many places the volume of overburden that must be removed to allow open-pit work has increased alarmingly. Quarrymen are also gradually learning how expensive it is to sort and clean stone from a deposit overlain by poor material. As such conditions confront the limestone industry, the natural tendency is to seek some modification in method whereby the handicaps of increasing cost may be met and overcome. Operators, some of them unwillingly, have been forced to conclude that underground work in drifts and tunnels is the most logical solution of the problem. The unwillingness of some is largely due to unfamiliarity with mining and to the unfounded fear that costs must increase and dangers multiply when mining is undertaken.

Mining and metallurgy have had a long history in China, and resources there have always been considered promising. Under the People's Republic of China (PRC), a remarkable industrial renaissance is underway that should further gain momentum in the years ahead. Rapid development of minerals have not only brought the PRC prominence in industrialization, but also in world affairs. Chinese mineral developments, especially petroleum, have been increasingly in the news. Oil and gas may have great potential, but a very large coal industry is already in existence. The steel industry ranks fifth or sixth in the world. The PRC is also prominent in fertilizer, cement, and salt production. The export metals are well known. Also, the country is buying heavily in nonferrous base metals. The need to know and the intense interest in the subject have prompted this study. The world significance of Chinese minerals is pointed out. The history of growth and PRC's mineral supply position are reviewed. Evaluations are made of policy considerations and regional and technical factors affecting mineral development. PRC's mineral trade and efforts to obtain equipment, supplies, and know-how are assessed. Specific reviews are made of major mineral sectors, including coal and power, oil and gas, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, industrial minerals, and fertilizers and chemicals. The overall outlook is summarized.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 377 natural gas samples from 19 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 373 samples were collected during calendar year 1970. The remaining four samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting per-mission to publish the analyses were not received until 1970. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Twelve previous publications have presented the results of 9,050 gas analyses prior to 1970. In its efforts to reduce waste, and increase efficiencyin oil production, the Bureau of Mines is investigating methods of increasing the recovery from the underground sources of supply, which are the foundation of the petroleum industry and the many allied industries wholly or partly dependent on it. In the face of a demand that is increasing faster than the production and that, in the consensus of opinions of well-informed authorities, is soon likely to outstrip the productive capacity, it is well to consider whether it is not possible to extract more oil from the known sources of supply. It is universally acknowledged that by the usual production methods much oil is left underground, the general opinion being that at least 50 per cent of the oil in a field remains unrecovered when the field is abandoned as exhausted. From the writer's own investigations he believes the average recovery is even less, and if any considerable portion of this oil being left underground could he made available it would have a tremendously favorable influence on the petroleum industry and all the industries dependent on it. In this publication are considered the principles involved in increasing recovery and methods of extracting more oil from the oilbearing formations than by the usual ways of producing. These methods are: The use of gas or vacuum pumps, forcing compressed air or gas through the oil-bearing formations, displacing the oil by water, and better utilization of the natural pressures in the oilhearing formations. Especial attention is being given to a processcommonly known as the Smith-Dunn-for forcing compressed air through oil-bearing formations because it is believed to hold most promise for the future.

In attempting the predict coal cleat orientation in the subsurface for effective methane degasification of the coal beds in the Warrior coal field of Alabama, approximately 150 rock joint orientations and 45 coal cleat orientations were measured in each of 37 7 ½ minute quadrangles in Tuscaloosa, Walker, Jefferson, Fayette, Winston, Blount, and Bibb Counties. Data from these surface locations, and coal cleat data from eight underground mines was corrected for magnetic declination and titled beds rotated to the horizontal where necessary and plotted on rose diagrams for comparative analysis. Data collected on each joint and cleat consisted of attitude, quality, type, spacing, persistence, lithology, bedding thickness, surface texture, and filling. File data and published and unpublished reports from the State Survey and the State Mine Inspector's Office were re-viewed. Twenty-seven mining companies, most of which supplied information pertinant to the project were also contacted. The information obtained consisted of crop line information structure, and underground mine outlines, all of which were put on 7 ½ -minute topographic quadrangles. LANDSAT-1 imagery and Skylab photography were compared to dominant joint and cleat trends in the study area. Detailed results can be found in an open-file report entitled "Fracture Analyses in a Selected Area of the Warrior Coal Field, Alabama." A master's thesis entitled "The Relationship Between Surface Joints and Subsurface Structure in a Selected Area of the Warrior Coal Field" is being prepared to illustrate the relation-ship of the fracture system to the structure in the Warrior coal field. A proposal has been submitted for research on a project entitled "Rock Fracture Systems and Their Affects on the Extraction of Fossil Fuels in the Warrior Basin, Alabama"

The Juneau Gold Belt, centered on Juneau and approximately 120 miles long by 10 miles wide, stretches from Berners Bay on the north to Windham Bay on the south (fig. D-l). Access within the Juneau Gold Belt is provided by the Glacier, Thane, and North Douglas Highways. The Glacier Highway extends northwest from Juneau for approximately 40 miles to Echo Cove, and the other two roads end 5.5 miles southeast and 12.6 miles west from Juneau, respectively. None of these roads connect with other highway systems and access to other areas is restricted to airplanes, the State ferry system, and commercial barge lines. BUREAU ACTIVITIES The majority of lode gold produced in Alaska came from the Juneau Gold Belt portion of the Juneau Mining District. To evaluate the economic potential of the Gold Belt, the Bureau located 173 mines and prospects within the area. A total of 263 ad its and shafts were found and 56,650 feet of underground workings were mapped. The Bureau collected and analyzed 1,557 samples during the study. In addition, considerable detailed geologic map-ping was done in the vicinity of the mines and prospects from which ore control models were developed.

The segregation process consists of heating crushed oxidized or mixed oxide-sulfide copper are with a copper-volatilizing salt and carbonaceous material at about 750° C. to produce metallic copper which is recovered from the furnace calcines by conventional sulfide flotation. The Bureau of Mines made a number of bench-scale laboratory tests on two copper ores to determine the relative merits of using halogen salts, potassium chlorate, or various salt mixtures as volatilizing agents in segregation of the copper. Laboratory investigation of typical siliceous and calcareous oxidized ores revealed that sodium chloride was a better segregating agent than the other salts. Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium fluoride, or potassium chlorate gave nearly as good segregation as the sodium chloride on the siliceous ore. Segregation of the calcareous ore with calcium chloride was nearly as good as that obtained with sodium chloride, but inferior segregation resulted when magnesium chloride, sodium bromide, or potassium chlorate was employed. The use of sodium bromide or sodium iodide on the siliceous ore, and of sodium fluoride or sodium iodide on the calcareous are, gave appreciably poorer segregation than sodium chloride or the other salts. Other tests of the ores, using mixtures of sodium chloride and the other halogen salts or potassium chlorate, gave segregation approaching that obtained with sodium chloride.

Diatomite is the name now generally given to a mineral substance composed of the tiny , skeletal remains of diatoms , which are microscopic , flowerless , water plants related to the algae ... This residuum is essentially hydrous amorphous silica. Common names for diatomite are : Diatomaceous earth , tripolite , kieselguhr , and infusorial earth . Strictly speaking , however , the latter material is not diatomite , as it is composed of the fossil remains of infusoria , which usually do not occur with the diatomaceae . Other synonyms for diatomite are : Diatomaceous silica , kieselmehl , bergmehl , diatomeenpeelite , polirschiefer , moler , molera , molererde , de smid earth , fossil flour , mountain flour , farine fossil , white peat , radiolarian earth , chalk rock, ceyssatite , randanite , and tellurine ; also various diatomite products of individual companies are known by their own trade names . Diatomite should not be confused with fuller's earth , for the two are separate and distinct substances . Bentonite , pumice , and tripoli , have also been used erroneously to designate diatomite . Tripolite , however , is a true diatomite formerly mined near Tripoli ..

The Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior is increasingly concerned with the safety and health of personnel engaged in coal-mining operations, particularly below ground. The Bureau is also concerned with improving the utilization of domestic mineral resources, and reducing the environmental impact of mineral operations. One obvious way to improve safety and minimize health hazards would be to eliminate coal mining entirely by bringing the energy value of the coal to the surface in some other way, such as by partially burning it underground to form combustible gases and bringing these gases to the surface, where their energy content can be put to use. This technique might also improve the utilization of the coal resource. ? Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines, interested in re-evaluating underground coal gasification technology in terms of current and expected conditions in the United States, requested Arthur D. Little, Inc., (ADL) to appraise the technology to determine: ? Whether the current (1971) state of the technology offers a technically feasible method for gasifying coal underground that is applicable to the reserves of bituminous and lower rank coals in the United States. ? Whether a program of research and further development of the technology could ultimately make it a technically feasible alternative to current open-pit and underground coal mining operations. ? What the nature and cost of further research and development work in the technology should be.

This report summarizes the results and conclusions reached by various investigators who have attempted to determine the extent to which hydraulic fracturing will affect the secondary recovery of crude oil by waterflooding. It also discusses the most advantageous use of this well-stimulation method in waterflood projects. A thorough search of the literature was made, and pertinent information was abstracted from appropriate reports. A carefully designed and controlled program of formation fracturing is an effective aid in waterflooding because it increases water-injection and oil-production rates. Generally, fracturing has resulted in little or no reduction in ultimate oil recovery, but under certain circumstances recovery has been substantially increased.

In 1984, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Pahute Peak Wilderness Study Area (WSA) (NV-020-621), which covers 57,529 acres in Humboldt County, NV. About 90 percent of the WSA is underlain by Tertiary volcanic and shallow intrusive rocks. Of the remainder, metasedimentary rocks of unknown age are in contact with Cretaceous intrusive rocks in the northwest corner of the WSA. The entire WSA is within an upthrown fault block of the Basin and Range physiographic province. Portions of the WSA, especially south of Pahute Peak (Big Mountain), may be part of an eroded caldera structure. No mines or evidence of major exploration were identified within the WSA. Workings in Copper Canyon, claim blocks along the northwest boundary, and zones of anomalous character as defined by the Bureau of Land Management were examined. No mineral resources were identified, but sample results indicate three significantly mineralized sites, one with indications for zinc skarns in Copppr Canyon, another favorable for precious metals 2 miles south of Copper Canyon, and another area near the northwest boundary with geologic conditions characteristic of molybdenum deposits. Further investigation of these sites is warranted. Petrified wood is present in small amounts near the west central range front.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, are investigating technology and methods to monitor the blind areas around large haulage equipment used in surface mines. On average, six fatalities a year can be attributed to equipment colliding with other vehicles or pedestrian workers, or backing over the edge of a dump point. Several off-the-shelf technologies exist for monitoring areas that an equipment operator cannot see from the cab, including radar, video cameras, and radio signal detection systems. NIOSH researchers have tested many of these systems on large dump trucks both at their test facility and at surface mines. This article discusses the technologies available for this application and their effectiveness in detecting objects near an off-highway dump truck. Also, guidance is presented for mine safety personnel who are planning to evaluate collision warning systems or cameras on their haulage equipment. Explosions in U.S. coal mines have caused death and injury to miners and destruction of workings since the first reported explosion in 1810. These explosions are caused when buildups of explosive gas and/or dust in the mine are ignited by the presence of a flame or spark. Methane gas is inherently generated and held by adsorption in coal and is normally liberated during mining. Because this gas is explosive in the range of 5%–15% by volume, fresh air is constantly supplied to the working face to prevent the methane/air mixture from reaching this explosive range. The required amount of ventilation air is based on estimates of gas release under normal conditions. Occasionally, unanticipated and unusually high emissions are encountered, which, despite normal ventilation controls, result in an explosive mixture that a spark from a cutting bit or electrical equipment can easily ignite. Investigations have shown that such emissions are often associated with anomalous geologic features or conditions. Although most operators are aware that certain geologic features may adversely affect productivity, few are aware of their potential as a gas emission hazard. This report presents a historical framework detailing the impact of geologic features on excess gas emissions and resultant mine explosions. It also provides operators with specific information on recognizing and alleviating potential hazards from methane emissions related to these geologic features.2

About two-thirds of the manufactured gas supplied to the public by the gas plants in the Illinois district is cnrbureted water gas. The leading generator fuel is coke, ma.de in by-product c.oke ovens or in retorts, chiefly from eastern gas coals. During the fall and winter of 1917-18, when the demand for coke by war industries and the restrictions of the Fuel Administration in connection with the transportation of coke from eastern States made it almost impossible for many gas companies to obtain their coke requireml'nts, several water-gas plants had to use bituminous coal as generator fud. Many operating difficulties were encountered, some of which were solved more or less satisfactorily in different plants. A number of plants attacked the problem rather blindly because facilities for making tests were lacking and because technical men were too busy with labor and supply problems to study thoroughly the conditions involved or to ascertain what other plants had done with this fuel. It was therefore with the hope of assisting the gas industry during this critical period, and of promoting the use of Central District coals for gas making, that the Illinois Mining Investigations, a joint agency of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Geological Survey Division undertook the, tests discussed in this paper. • This report was compiled under the auspices of a technical committee appointed by Gov. Frank 0. Lowden to promote the use of Central District coals in gas manufacture as a war measure. This committee included the following representatives of the various agencies concerned: U. S. Bureau of Mines, E. A. Holbrook and W. W. Odell; Illinois Gas Association, C. W. Bradley and R. B. Harper; University of Illinois, Dean C. R. Richards, Prof. S. W. Parr, and Prof. H. H. This Bureau of Mines report analyzes data on the physical properties of quartzite rock from the Crescent mine, Coeur d?Alene mining district, Kellogg, Idaho, to demonstrate the use of multivariate techniques. After regression, factor, component, cluster, and discriminant analyses are discussed, these techniques are applied to the Crescent mine data. Three appendixes contain some of the required mathematical and statistical detail plus heuristic examples of three multivariate techniques --component, cluster, and discriminant analysis.

This report describes research by the Bureau of Mines on alternative materials-handling strategies for reducing the costs and incidence of back injuries in low-seam coal mines. Strategies recommended for redesigning materials-handling tasks include elimination of tasks, mechanization of tasks, and matching lifting tasks to the physical capabilities of underground miners. The report also discusses other methods that can be used by management to reduce the costs associated with back injuries.

During the initial portion of the contract several alternative designs were considered, as set out step by step in the monthly reports. The conclusions reached during this period were - to use on INTERDATA Model 70 as the system minicomputer - to drop the idea of multiplexing and digitizing the inclinometer outputs downhole due to the greater complexity and cost that that alternative would imply - to use a multitasking software monitor to enable synchronization of the several tasks that the system would have to perform simultaneously - to use a common controller for all I/0 devices except those which were available off the shelf from Interdata - to use a sheave counter to meter off equal increments of probe travel, but to supplement this information with the use of an encoder on the winch drum in order to be able to measure total probe travel unambiguously. - to place all I10 device interfaces in a bin connected to the common controller. During this period considerable attention was dedicated to the design of the mechanical components contemplated it the original contract. Of these, only those required for vertical probe was complete at the time that it was decided to forego the mechanical subsystem and concentrate on developing the necessary electronics and software to interface with the probes being developed by the Bureau of Mines.
