This user's manual covers a set of 5 computer codes which were generated during development of a simulation of deep ocean mining operational economics. Table 1.1 provides a summary of these codes, and a more thorough description of each follows, In addition to the descriptions in this user's manual, internal documentation is provided throughout each code, except for the very simple ones, for ease of understanding or possible modification. The two major codes are MINER, which performs the deep ocean mining system operational simulation, and MSWEEP, which calculates the sweep and feed efficiencies for a set of collector paths generated by MINER. The standard operating procedure is to input the system and operating parameters to MINER, which computes a set of collector paths automatically and stores the information in the fife PATH.DAT. MSWEEP subsequently retrieves the collector path data in PATH.DAT, and uses it to calculate sweep and feed efficiency. Separating MINER and MSWEEP allows parmetric execution of MSWEEP without recomputing the collector paths with MINER. PIPEST, RESP, and OBSTCL are special-purpose codes described in more detail in the following documentation.

Because the cutting and polishing of stones are parts of the work of the Bureau of Mines in its study of rocks and minerals and in the determination of specimens sent in for identification, it was decided that a circular covering the subject in a general way would be of practical interest. As several books and periodicals give details of the problems in cutting and polishing, this report will not duplicate their information more than necessary. Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. In response, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equip­ment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by dredging. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to iden­tify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges used in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are pres­ent. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA’s) permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA8), laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers and greasers are the workers most likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and to thus develop NIHL over time

A high-pressure intensifier system was designed, constructed and field tested as part of a program to determining the feasibility of applying high-pressure water jets on conventional mechanical rock excavation equipment to increase advance rates. Also developed were a high-volume swivel, capable of transferring the high-pressure water to a rotating cutterhead and manifold system for locating and protecting the jets on the cutterhead. Field tests were conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, WA, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. The concept of improving excavation rates by using water jets to assist mechanical cutting was proven to be successful, with an average increase in excavation mete of 50 to 60%. For some tests, the excavation rate was more than doubled. Machine torque requirements were reduced approximately 25% when the water jets were used. It was suggested this was due to reduced cutterhead friction in the presence of the water jets. A comprehensive economic analysis was undertaken as part of a concurrent study to determine the degree of cost benefits attainable from increased advance rates. Very significant savings were seen to be possible. It was concluded that the basic concept of combining a water jet capability with a mechanical excavating machine is definitely possible.

This project was initiated on October 1, 1980 and will be completed on December 31, 1983. The project was Initially approved and funded by the Office of Surface Mining and subsequently was moved to the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Mines. It was administered through the Indiana Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute. The research was done to assess reforestation success and ultimate productivity for areas reclaimed under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (P.L. 95-87). The Permanent Regulatory Program for implementation of P.L. 95-87 Includes provisions for revegetation that require seeding of ground cover plants to control erosion until permanent vegetation such as tree species Is established, and restoration of mined land to its original or better productivity. Much of the land to be surface-mined presently supports forest cover and it is anticipated that reconstructed minesoils will exhibit high productive potential for hardwood tree species. Hence, information was needed on compatibility of ground cover and tree seedlings when established concurrently as well as on revegetation success under postmining versus premining conditions.

The Valle Vidal Unit comprises 100,000 acres In Taos and Colfax: Counties, New Mexico. The unit was donated to the American public In 1982 by the Pennzoll Co. and is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service as an addition to the Carson National Forest. During 1990-1991, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral Investigation of the unit as authorized by an Interagency Agreement (1987) Intended to assist the Forest Service to incorporate mineral resource data In forest plans. The Bureau reviewed literature and records concerning mineral resources and mining activity, and performed a field examination of mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in and near the Valle Vidal Unit. The La Belle mining district encompasses most of the western part of the Valle Vidal Unit. The district was most active between 1893 and 1902, after the land grant was opened to prospecting and gold discoveries were reported. The discoveries were low grade, and eventually were abandoned. The Bureau's appraisal of the district determined that lode gold occurs primarily in fissure veins in volcanic rocks, and placer gold occurs In weakly cemented sedimentary rocks and alluvial sediments; but at a grade that is currently considered subeconomic. If the price of gold increases in the future, prospecting and exploration in the area may be renewed, but the activity would likely be limited due to "acquired land status" restrictions, which require mineral leasing and prohibit claim location in the Valle Vidal Unit.

This Bureau of Mines report presents expected levels of air pollutants in the face areas of oil shale mines, based upon data collected by the authors and previous investigators. Ventilation requirements to maintain these pollutant levels below their threshold limit values and Federal and local mine air quality standards are discussed. Two practical face ventilation systems are discussed in terms of actual in-mine test experience.

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines experiments in purifying sulfate leach liquors, which were prepared from low-tenor beryl concentrates by modifying the Degussa process. The leach liquor was prepared from a beryl concentrate containing 2.7 percent BeO by (1) sintering the beryl concentrate with limestone in a rotary kiln at about 1,150° C. and by (2) treating the sinter first with sulfuric acid and then with water to form and extract beryllium sulfate. About 80 percent of the beryllium was dissolved. The resulting leach liquor contained 2.4 grams of BeO, 20 grams of Al203, and 6 grams of Fe203 per liter. The laboratory solution contained much more aluminum and iron than a solution derived from treating 10 percent BeO concentrate, which is the standard raw material used by industry. Tests were made to determine the behavior of the solution toward alum purification and limestone neutralization both of which were employed industrially in conventional Degussa procedure.

Past studies with blowing face ventilation systems have shown that using a machine-mounted scrubber and water sprays can reduced methane levels at the face. The current research was conducted to determine how the sprays and scrubber interact to reduce methane levels, and what spray configurations provide the best face ventilation when used with a scrubber. Testing was conducted in a ventilation test gallery designed to simulate a full-scale mine entry. In the entry, a model mining machine, equipped with a simulated dust scrubber and water spray systems, was located at the face of a 6.1 m (20 ft) box cut. Face ventilation was provided by a blowing curtain located 12.2 m (40 ft) from the face. Methane released from a manifold at the face was measured at six locations near the face to compare the ventilation effectiveness of the spray systems while operating with and without the scrubber. Airflow movement across the face was affected by the spray configuration and scrubber operation. Average face concentrations were lowest when directed sprays were used with the scrubber. Varying the direction of the scrubber exhaust affected face methane levels.

A mineral survey of the Fisher Gulch RARE II area (A5299), Trinity County, California was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. The area is underlain by the Salmon Hornblende Schist. Tonalite stocks 1.5 mi (2.8 km) to the east and northeast of the area intrude the schist and are closely associated with the nearby nines (Cox, 1967). The mines have quartz veins containing sulfides and gold in shears trending east to north past in the schist and tonalite (Hotz, 1972). Strewn and terrace gravel s occupy most of the drainages, many have yielded substantial quantities of gold.

"The detection of leakage is a recognized problem in the safe and economic distribution and use of natural gas. Natural gas is practically odorless and therefore lacks he property of indicating significant leakage by the sense of smell, the means most widely used by gas employees and consumers for detecting leaks of the more odorous types of fuel eases. In view of the recognized value of the odor of gas for indicating leakage at the time of occurrence the Bureau of Mines has studied' the possibility of adding small amounts highly odorous substances to types of fuel gas (such as blue water gas and natural gas) that lack warning properties. These studies revealed that the mercaptans were promising substances to accomplish this purpose, not only for odorizing fuel gases but for other purposes° where it was desired to give warning through the sense of smell.Since completing the studies mentioned, the Bureau of Mines jointly with the American Gas Association has conducted further investigations dealing with the use of warning agents for fuel gases. The results of this work will be published later.The Bureau of Mines had been desirous of observing the practical use of ethyl mercaptan for detecting leakage of natural gas, particularly to determine whether the odor would permeate the ground and give indication of lea's in underground pipes. Opportunity for making these observations was recently given by E. A. Munyan, manager, gas department, Union Gas t Electric Co., who requested the bureau's cooperation in making leakage surveys of the company's distributing systems at Franklin and Middletown, Ohio."

"The present and possible futures commercial production of potash from various sources in the United States is discussed below under the following heads:1. Potash from the saline lakes.(a),Nebraska lakes.(b),California lakes.(c),Other lakes.2. Potash as by-product from the cement kilns.3. Potash as by-product from the iron blast furnace.4. Potash from silicate rocks.(a),Feldspathic material.(b),Leucite rocks of Wyoming.(c),Sericite slates of Georgia.(d),Glauconite (greensand) of New Jersey.5. Potash from Alunite.6. Potash from organic sources other than kelp.7. Potash from kelp.In this discussion very little more than passing reference, if any, will be given to those projects which up to date have been de¬veloped only slightly, if at all, beyond the small scale laboratory stage, or for the development of which there appears to be very little financial and technical backing at the present time. Nether or not many of these proposed projects have merit can be determined only by an actual operating demonstration.Generally speaking, the potash industry of the United States has been hardly more than marking time since the armistice. This is, largely due to the fact that the consumers of potash have been expecting that heavy shipments of foreign potash to the United States would be resumed soon at somewhere near the pre-war prices, and they have not been buying domestic potash at present prices for many months. The result has been that domestic producers have been unable to sell their product at even cost and many producers of potash have been obliged to close down. Thu Nebraska lake plants were closed down in February. The California saline plants were operating at below capacity, and the only large alunite plant is closed down. Even the cement plants have little or no inducements to recover the potash being lost in their waste gases, and the production is very small at present."

Electromagnetic location tests were conducted by Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory under the sponsorship of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at the Galena Mine in Northwest Idaho. The objectives of these tests were to evaluate the performance in deep hardrock mines of an electromagnetic location system previously developed for the U. S. Bureau of Mines for use in coal mines. Tests were performed using long wire transmitting antennas as well as horizontal and vertical transmitting loops at depths from 3000 feet to 4300 feet (995 metres to 1311 metres). Surface measurements were made of magnetic field strengths, field strength patterns, and background noise, These measurements were compared with theoretical predictions for a homogeneous ground conductivity consistent with this particular geologic region. The results of the Galena Mine tests show conclusively that light-weight portable electromagnetic transmitters can be effectively utilized to provide uplink communications and location information in deep hardrock mines. Typical metal mines such as Galena utilize deep vertical shafts for mine access and haulage and these shafts produce signal enhancement at the surface from underground electromagnetic transmitters by as much as 30 dB. The results also show that horizontal wire configuration can serve as an effective alternative to the magnetic dipole antenna as a rescue transmitting antennaa and can be used when the required area is not available for deployment of a loop antenna. In spite of the electromagnetic coupling effects observed in the vicinity of the shafts, the location accuracy obtained still provided useful information on the general location of the transmitting sources involved. The horizontal wire location accuracy was within 46 metres, while the vertical magnetic dipole and the horizontal magnetic dipole accuracies were within 152 metres and 110 metres respectively at a 915 metre depth.

The study area, which comprises 28,443 acres within the Jacumba Wilderness Study Area, is in the California Desert Conservation Area, and along the U.S.-Mexico border 25 miles west of Fl Centro, CA. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of mineral resources is based on examination of mining claims, known mineral occurrences, and mineralized zones during the fall of 1983. Limestone resources were identified inside the study area; tungsten resources may he present. Metasedimentary rocks intruded by Cretaceous Quartz diorite predominate in the study area. Tungsten and some gold have been found in skarn zones along intrusive contacts; limestone deposits are in the pre-Cretaceous rocks. Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic flows, pyroclastic rocks, clay beds, and diatomite in lake deposits nave been investigated for possible non-metallic resources. Evidence of mining or prospecting was found at 26 sites in or just outside the study area. In 1983, 106 claims were held in 13 claim groups. One claimant was sporadically prospecting for gold on claims in the north part of the study area in 1983, and gravel was being mined from alluvium 1/4 mile to the east.

This study was conducted using field interview methods to determine the data and information requirements of the underground coal mining industry for improving mine ground control procedures in existing and future mines. The establishment of a central geologic and engineering information resource center with computer searchable abstract files that can locate and supply descriptive and case-study literature addressing specific mining problems is recommended. This paper summarises the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a rib support design methodology and software tool that could be utilised by suitably qualified colliery staff. The project was primarily funded by Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and further supported by several Australian longwall operations. The outcome of the project is a design methodology and software tool called, Analysis and Design of Rib Support (ADRS). ADRS is an empirical technique, which recognises that several geotechnical and design factors affect ribline performance and in addition that operational and safety issues essentially dictate the level of performance required. Therefore, the design recommendations associated with ADRS are specific to the Australian coal industry; however the procedure(s) for data collection and analysis could be applied to other countries' 'underground coal industries. Case history data were compiled from 34 longwall and two bord and pillar operations resulting in 204 case histories with each case history data set being defined by approximately 130 individual data fields. In addition monitoring (incorporating stress cells and extensometers) was undertaken at 10 collieries to assess and quantify the effectiveness of different rib support patterns and hardware on rib performance. The monitoring sites allowed for an improved understanding of the mechanisms of rib failure and degradation in terms of its interaction with the installed support and at the various stages of the mining cycle. The design methodology deals with both mains development and gateroad development specific to Australian longwall mines. This paper focuses on longwall gateroads subjected to abutment loading and in particular the travel road which becomes the tailgate of the subsequent panel. The statistical analyses associated with these cases suggested that the level of rib support should be based primarily on the development height and the pillar stress level. The ADRS software guides users through the design process, allowing them to develop rib support plans based on sound science and a broad base of in-mine experience To the best of the authors’ knowledge ADRS is the first systematic rib support design technique to be developed for any country’s underground coal industry. The development and use of empirical models in mining have substantially contributed to improving safety and productivity. ADRS further demonstrates that empirical techniques are particularly relevant and beneficial in dealing with the complexities of geotechnical design associated with underground coal mining.

The material was gathered red on a trip through tale State in the summer of 1936. "INTRODUCTION This report describes the results obtained from a diamond-drill exploration project performed by the Bureau of Mines on the nickel deposits of the Yakobi Island, Alaska. The Federal Geological Survey 6/ completed a detailed geologic study and mapped the area during the summer of 1940, and a Bureau of Mines examining engineer 7/ made a preliminary examination of the deposits in June 1941, at which time core drilling was suggested as the logical means of determining the extent and grade of the deposits. Equipment and supplies were unloaded on the beach at Yakobi Island on October 21, 1941. The drills were moved to Bohemia Basin, where actual drilling operations wore begun under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer 8/ on November 7, 1941. Two core-drill holes were completed on December 7, 1941. Upon the request of the drilling contractor, operations were recessed owing to severe winter conditions. Work on the project was resumed April 27, 1942, under the direction of another Bureau of Mines engineer 9/ and was completed August 15, 1942. During the 1942 season, 13 core-drill holes were completed, and 10 surface pits and a tunnel were sampled. A total of 5, 191 feet of core-drill hole was drilled in 15 holes during the entire project. The results of drilling and sampling form the basis of this report."

Laboratory tests on three commercial methane detectors, two combustion- type detectors and one interferometer-type detector, were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine their response to certain single and multiple flammable gases mixed with normal and abnormal air atmospheres. Although both types of detectors responded accurately to methane-normal air mixtures, they did not show correct concentrations for other single flammable gases in air. Uniquely, the response of the interferometer-type detector to hydrogen was in a negative direction. The effects of individual gases in multiple flammable gas mixtures were approximately additive. In oxygen-deficient atmospheres the methane response of the interferometer-type detector erred on the high side, but only in very low oxygen concentrations were the combustion-type detectors affected-- showing low, erratic methane readings.

Thermoelectric properties of depleted uranium selenides and tellurides were investigated from room temperature to 700 C. Several depleted uranium monoselenides and monotellurides were doped with selected cationic and anionic materials to determine the effect of impurity additions on the thermoelectric properties. The undoped uranium selenides and tellurides were semimetallic conductors exhibiting low Seebeck coefficients and electrical resistivities. Partial or complete degeneracy was in evidence, indicating a charge carrier energy distribution similar to that in a metal. Doping increased the Seebeck coefficients of the uranium monoselenides and monotellurides; however, the corresponding change in the power factor in the figure of merit was small because of the increase in electrical resistivity.
