The following report summarizes the results of engineering feasibility studies whose purpose was to assess the probable efficiency, reliability, safety and cost of a number of possible methods for removal of radon gas from the ambient air in underground mines. Fourteen candidate techniques were evaluated. Seven of these were based on specific individual principles, and seven were based on combinations of these principles. The Young America lead-silver-zinc mine in Stevens County, Wash., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during parts of 1946, 1947, and 1948. Results of the investigation are described herein. The mine is 1/4 mile northeast of Bossburg, Wash., the nearest railway station. An excellent paved highway (No. 22) connects Bossburg with Colville, Wash., 23 miles to the south. The property was located in October 1885. It is credited with a production of 2,178 tons of shipping ore since 1901. The shipping ore averaged 7 percent lead, 7.7 percent zinc, and 16.1 ounces silver per ton. The property is under lease and option to Walter E. Morris and Perry Leighton of Colville, Wash. The deposit crops out on a steep limestone bluff overlooking the Columbia River. The country rock is a highly metamorphosed, brecciated, marbleized limestone (Northport formation).

This report summarizes the results of a nationwide investigation completed in 1964 to determine the nonferrous base metal ore reserves and potential sources of ore and to evaluate criteria for their ultimate exploitation. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines contacted mining company officials, reviewed reports and Government records, and where necessary made personal appraisals in arriving at the results. The estimates are presented by metals in ores in geographic regions and include some of the problems affecting the reserves and potential sources. The recoverable metal in the measured ore category and in the total ore reserves was estimated as follows: [ ] At the 1963 rate of domestic mine production these total reserves would be adequate to provide copper for 62 years, lead for 121 years, and zinc for 42 years. Data also are given for gold, silver, and other coproducts. Reserve estimates greatly exceed those of previous investigations; some prior estimates of copper reserves are included for comparison (table 23). Projections of requirements for base metals indicated the United States will need approximately 45 percent more copper in 1970 and 110 percent more by 1980 than was consumed in 1960; similar projections for lead indicate increases of 20 percent by 1970 and 45 percent by 1980; zinc projections are 40 percent more by 1970 and 90 percent by 1980. Much of the production of gold and silver is a coproduct of base metals recovery and the projected need for the precious metals exceeds all the United States can produce. Some problems of the industry are mentioned. A graphic evaluation of the economic availability of the reserve and potential sources is shown.

Dusts can be filtered out of air streams onto polymer surfaces by electrostatic trapping resulting from the spontaneous transfer of electrons upon contact between dust particles and the polymer surfaces. Such spontaneous contact electrification has been studied quantitatively in this contract with the aid of modern semiconductor charge-sensors with the aim of determining what basic principles govern the sign and magnitude of contact electrification. Information obtained by capacitance-voltage measurements of thin polymer films on silicon showed that charges as large as 4 x 1012 electrons per cm2 develop spontaneously, and that such a charge gives adhesional forces of 165 pounds per square inch (11 atmospheres). Direct measurement of dust polymer contact electrification, using silicon surface channel conductance sensors, also showed spontaneous charges of more than 1012 electrons per cm2. Some polymers can either donate or accept electrons. These included chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polypropylene, polyethylmethacrylate, and a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinylether. Other polymers never accepted electrons but could donate electrons; these included polystyrene, pulychlorostyrune, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylacetate, a polycarbonate (Lexan), and cellulose tributyrate. Contact electrification studies were made with dusts (coal dust, a channel black, or a silica powder) contacting thin films of various polymers solvent-cast onto the semiconductor charge-sensor. Sometimes charging was instantaneous and sometimes slower, but in all but one case (coal dust on a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinyl ether) the charge trunsfer was a donation of electrons by the polymer to the dust. More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

Hydrogen sulphide associated with the gasps and vapors from certain crude oils now produced in the United States has forced a serious health and safety problem upon the petroleum industry. Although the presence of hydrogen sulphide in or occurring with Mexican crudes has been known for some time, it was not until recently that crude oils which give off poisonous amounts of hydrogen sulphide have been produced to any extent in the United State. The injurious effects of this poisonous gas were first recognized by the refiners along; the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts upon receiving shipments of crude petroleum from Mexico. The problem of combating the hazards of the gases and vapors given off by this petroleum become more important as the use of Mexican crude increased. In 1925, the Bureau of Mines and Public Health Service under cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, studied the causes rend effects of hydrogen sulphide poisoning. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 2312 is report of this investigation, and although written with special reference to refineries, it nevertheless contains much information that is of value to the producer of petroleum.

A summary of Bureau of Mines research on recycling, reuse, and disposal of mineral-, metal-, and energy-based wastes is presented, accompanied by an extensive bibliography of related publications. The Bureau's waste recycling and disposal program is directed toward the following four main areas of research and development: (1) extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) upgrading and recycling of automotive and related ferrous and nonferrous scrap; (3) recovery, utilization, and stabilization of mine and mill processing wastes, and (4) recovery and reuse of values from industrial waste products. This publication updates Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8529, which was issued August 1971.

This bulletin traces the growth in the belief in the explosibility of coal dust, summarizes the experiments and mine investigations that have established this belief, and gives the present status of pre- ventive measures. It has been prepared in accordance with the pro- visions of the acts of Congress authorizing investigations relating to the causes of mine explosions, and contains references to and descrip- tions of experiments made at the Federal testing station at Pittsburg, Pa. This station was inaugurated under the United States Geo- logical Survey, and was transferred to the Bureau of Mines on the establishment of the latter on July 1, 1910. Only within comparatively few years has the dry dust of bitumi- nous and lignitic coals been generally recognized as an explosive agent more insidious, threatening, and deadly to the miner than fire damp. Fire damp carries its own flag of warning-the "cap" in the safety lamp-but coal dust, though visible, does not attract attention until present in large quantities. Fire damp is of local occurrence, and except in notable and very exceptional cases is controllable by careful manipulation of ventilating currents. If by mischance a body of fire damp is ignited in a mine, the force of the explosion may be terrific, but the effect is local unless dry coal dust is present, or unless (as it very rarely happens) an explosible mixture of methane gas and air extends through large areas of the mine. In a dry mine dust accu- mulates everywhere, and the blast from the ignition and combustion of bituminous dust may traverse miles of rooms and entries and wreck structures at the entrance to the mine. The comparative potential destructiveness of gas and of bituminous dust is strikingly shown by the history of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines. These mines not infrequently have large inflows of gas, and the resulting mixtures of gas and air have sometimes been ignited, yet no such wide-sweeping explosions have taken place, despite the presence of dry anthracite dust, as have happened in excellently ventilated bituminous mines.

Hammer machines are now widely used for underground sampling and exploration. Their application to such work can be divided into two classes - sampling and testing with ordinary drilling equipment to shallow depths of 22 feet or less, and "long hole" drilling with heavy machines and special equipment to depths of as much as 250 feet or more. In the first category hammer drills are employed for either of two distinct purposes: first, as a means of checking the results of grab or cut samples or, in certain types of ore deposits, as a substitute for these methods; and second, as a method of sampling the ground 5 to 20 feet beyond existing faces and thus aiding in the control of stoping operations or in the direction of development headings, as the case may be. The deep-hole drill, in the second category, has proved to be a valuable adjunct to the old established methods of exploring, end developing ore, provided it is employed under natural conditions to which it is suited, handled by men thoroughly familiar with the technique of its operations, and used with its possibilities and limitations clearly understood.

The machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor (MMCRDM) is a fixed-location area sampling device developed for possible use at the working face of an underground coal mine. This device, based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance, has evolved over the past eight years through a cooperative effort of the former Bureau of Mines, MSHA, and the Rupprecht & Patashnick Company in Albany, NY. The capability to measure respirable coal mine dust levels on a continuous basis, rather than depending solely on periodic samples obtained from the traditional coal mine dust samplers, has been a goal in the mining industry for nearly two decades. Recently, an extensive series of laboratory and underground tests was conducted by NIOSH with the cooperation of MSHA and coal operators to test the performance of the MMCRDM In preliminary laboratory testing, the MMCRDM seemed to work well. However, in every underground test, when compared to reference samplers placed close to the inlet, the MMCRDM failed to meet the 25% accuracy criterion specified in the contract under which it was developed. Two reasons explain this failure: First, in most tests the bias (the relative discrepancy between the average MMCRDM concentration and the average reference sampler concentration) was too great. Second, the variability of the samplers used for reference comparison was too large. Finally, the underground testing of the MMCRDMs showed that they are quite unreliable at this stage of development. In the majority of mine tests, no more than 10 shifts of data were taken before the MMCRDM failed to function properly. Major breakdowns, requiring the return of the MMCRDM to the factory for repairs, occurred on average every 28 days. To be considered mine-worthy, MMCRDM reliability must be substantially improved. The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. The electromagnetic noise that exists in a mining environment is quite severe and was shown to have been reasonably well documented by a number of researchers in the Phase I Report. The noise levels are such that prudent communication design requires the careful use of all the electromagnetic noise data available. A comprehensive survey was undertaken to determine techniques used in various industrial environments to achieve secure communications in the presence of electromagnetic interference. The techniques were given in the Phase I Report and are rudimentary, but have produced reasonably good results. A number of these techniques could be applied to the mining environment.

A method is presented for creating realistic numerical models for practical coal mine ground control. The method includes procedures to collect the necessary mechanical input parameters from a geologic core log, procedures to set up a model and procedures to interpret calculation results. The input parameters come from a detailed geologic core log and extensive point load tests of estimate rock layer strength. A suite of material property input parameters is proposed which allow the user to go from core log to numerical model inputs. Rock bolt anchorage properties are also linked to the material properties of each geologic layer in the model. Following this procedure leads to very realistic calculations of the rock failure process and rock support system behavior. These calculations in turn enable realistic comparison of the effectiveness of alternative rock support systems.

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry - reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production - have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period. Fatality statistics for 1932 show that the drilling and producing, pipe line and transportation, and refining and natural gasoline divisions of the industry had fewer accidents in 1932 than in 1931, sales and marketing being the only division that showed an increase over 1931. The number of fatalities by divisions for 1931 and 1932, percent of total, and percentages of increase and decrease are given in Table 1.

Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1962; in general, the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. Part 3 gives the results of an investigation which, although too limited to warrant separate publication, merits presentation in some detail because of current interest in ammonium nitrate-fuel oil compositions.

The recovery or partial recovery of the oil remaining in oil sands after the usual methods of production have become unprofitable is perhaps the greatest problem in the petroleum industry today. The amount of this oil remaining in the sand is variously estimated by those familiar with the subject to be 25 to 90 per cent of the original content.2 Lewis3 states, "The estimate of 80 to 90 per cent of the oil left underground does not seem incredible."

The U. S. Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance In the western Crazy Mountains for cobalt and associated metals as part of the Alaska-wide critical and strategic metals program. The area, located about 75 miles north of Fairbanks in central Alaska, is underlain by complexly faulted, predominantly clastic sedimentary rocks bordering the Tintina Fault system. Above background metal concentrations were found to occur in altered fault zones, tectonic breccias, soils, and ground water seeps and precipitates that either cut or are derived from the faulted clastic sedimentary rocks. Up to 0.115 pct cobalt and more than 2.0 pct zinc were detected in soil samples. Spring precipitates contained up to 1.3 pct zinc, 0.037 pct tungsten, and other metals. Some localities lacked cobalt but contained anomalous amounts of copper, lead, zinc, silver, and other metals. No outcropping of primary metallic minerals was located because of Colluvium and vegetation cover and extensive deep leaching. Therefore, whether the metal values encountered are due to primary deposits with economic development potential or are the results of concentration by ground water from low-grade sources is unknown. The presence of cobalt, nickel and zinc, and the identification of minor tin and tungsten indicate that further investigation is warranted.

An engineering investigation was carried out on the technical and economic feasibility of implementing flexible liner/backpacking support systems In an advancing tailgate longwall mine. The system for a model mine consists of a circular tube constructed of liner plates and flyash backpacking. Flyash is pneumatically stowed into the tailgate. Small amounts of cement may be mixed to improve the support capability of the fill In difficult local ground conditions. Water is added inside the nozzle immediately prior to spraying. Results of theoretical analyses and a field test show that the designed system is technically feasible, can be cost-competitive, provides more stable ground conditions, and can Increase productivity and coal recovery, when compared with existing retreat longwall systems. In certain mine layouts, the new system can reduce the direct mining costs by a significant amount. The system would be particularly applicable to deeper coal beds with bad ground conditions.
