The iron ore from Yichang in China assaying 41.64% Fe and 1.02% P is a low grade and high phosphorus oolitic hematite ore. The separation of iron minerals from gangue minerals in the ore by conventional processing techniques is ineffective owing to their close similar properties. The modification of iron minerals by microwave-assisted reduction was investigated in order to improve separability of the ore. The effects of microwave-assisted reduction on the subsequent low intensity magnetic separation and floatation were examined. The results show that the main factors affecting the reduction and separation process are grinding size, reduction temperature and reductant. Fine grinding of the microwave-treated ore to smaller than 0.074mm was found to be imperative due to the tiny dissemination characteristics of iron oxide minerals. After magnetizing reduction by microwave heating at 500?, the magnetic concentrate containing 58.36% Fe and 0.67% P can be obtained with the Fe recovery of 91.28%. Magnetizing reduction drops the floatability of iron oxide minerals, thus reverse flotation is fit for upgrading the magnetic concentrate to contain 62.13% Fe and 0.21% P with Fe recovery of 81.59%. Compared with present microwave-assisted reduction technique of carbon reductant, using a waste iron powder as reductant is a novel and effective technique without the green house effect caused by the release of CO and CO2. Waste iron powder with a faster response to microwave heating then coke and charcoal can be recovered by magnetic separation in a low cost and plays the role of reductant and microwave heating accelerator.

To improve the efficiency of the crushing/screening plant of Bazalt-Középko Kobányák Ltd. (Hungary), the implementation of computer aided quality control is planned. In the current phase, the R & D work aims at the solution of high-priority tasks: 1) Developing the process models, validation of the models by means of industrial measurements. 2) Developing the algorithm for the process control of the crushing/sizing plant. 3) Developing the suitable computer program. To develop the mathematical models of crushing (breakage and probability functions) and to determine the model parameters, the experimental industrial trials were carried out on hydrocone crushers of types Svedala H 4800 EF and H 4800 F, changing the gap size and crushing relatively narrow grain size fractions. Additionally, the parameters of the separation function for the screens operating in the system were determined. It was established that the crushing probability depends on the grain size of the feed (Y) and the gap size (s), so the breakage probability S, for each cone crusher, can be well characterised by the function formed using the ratio of these two parameters: SfYsf==. The distribution of the broken grains can be described reliably using the relative grain size distribution function B(? = x/Y) (usually Schuhmann-Gaudin- or Rosin-Rammler-shaped function). For the screens, the probability function ()2()111/NTx = xd ???---???? is suitable for cha-racterising the separation (where x? grain size, ?-open-area ratio, d ? rectangular screen aperture size, N ? number of appearance of the particle on a screen surface). Using these functions, the comminution circuits were described by means of vector/matrix equations. The calculations and measurements verified the reliability of the developed models and algorithms.

The present work aimed to verify the possibility of using froth flotation to separate the constitu-ent minerals of an alaskite rock waste having as the main minerals quartz and feldspar. Three stages of tests have been carried through. In the first stage was used an amphoteric collector for flotation, diaminedioleate, at pH 2 and, after analyzing the final products, a very poor selectivity was ob-served. During the second stage of tests, different collectors that are normally used for feldspar flo-tation as amines, sulfonates and soybean oil were employed. Once more, it was not possible to reach reasonably selective results. In the third stage, a salt of etheramine was used for collecting the feldspar and hydrofluoric acid was utilized for controlling the pH. A simulation of three flotation steps (rougher, cleaner and recleaner) permitted to attain a good selectivity in the flotation process. A concentrate with a silica content of 96.6% was obtained. The low concentrate content of alkalis totalizing 0.52% and a feldspar recovery of 96.5% to the tailings, represented by the high content of Na, K, and Al2O3 in the tailings, demonstrated that the concentrate was made up mostly of quartz.

"Recently, in order to extract metals, the industry is trying to process old metallurgical slag. The material requires very fine grinding that results in enhanced slime-formation. This in turn leads to problems in the course of the flotation process and to a loss of metal. In addition, it causes difficulties in the wastewater treatment aimed at water reuse. The aggregation and separation of the fine particles and their further subjecting to mineral processing would result in more efficient use of raw materials. Closing the water cycle also would be facilitated. The paper presents results from studying sixteen flocculation reagents, commercially available for treating municipal wastewater, including products based on nanotechnology, for their ability to rend the production wastewater in suitable for reuse in the flotation. It turned out that, from all studied reagents, the cationic C-587 is suitable for the purpose. Some of reagents were studied for their ability to flocculate selectively, in presence of coke fines, rich in copper fines which are produced at grinding of a slag from lead-zinc metallurgy. Most promising reagents are chosen, based on the chemical analysis of the flocculated materials. Open-cycle rough copper flotation experiments with the flocculated fines and recycled wastewater gave encouraging results."

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to produce titanium-rich material from Panzhihua ilmenite. The results showed preoxidation with sodium salt additive especially for Na2B4O7 signif- icantly advance the reduction of iron in Panzhihua ilmenite. Acceleration mechanism of preoxidation with Na2B4O7 has been studied here. The maximum metallization of iron 92% can be obtained under conditions of preoxidation at 850? for 30 min and subsequent reduction at 1100? for 150 min. The rusting separation technique to reduced ilmenite has been further studied, obtaining titanium-rich product with TiO2 over 82% and the recovery of TiO2 above 97%.

The Lake Balaton is the biggest and for many reasons the most important lake in Hungary. To preserve its healthy nature it is necessary to remove the accumulated mud time to time, similarly to the many living waters, lakes and rivers everywhere. Typical existing technologies (mechanical, hydraulic) require large depositional areas, where the removed slurry and mud is dewatered through very long time. One problem is the non existence of an economical mud thickening technology. Another major problem is that current methods remove the sand fraction with the mud as well. Many times sand has to be complemented from outer sources to endanger the natural balance of the living water. By the financial support of the NKFP 3A/068/2004 Hungarian Research Project our consortium has been looking for the solution to the above mentioned problems. The original ideas of the project were: 1. Sand should be separated and returned to the water by hydrocyclon; 2. New mud thickener should be developed based on the principle that vibrating rods can force settling and packing of mud particles. The work was started by fundamental research with different samples from Lake Balaton and River Bodrog. An automated settling column (45L) has been built for the investigation of the effect of vibrating rods on the settling behavior of suspensions. An optical sensor has been developed by with the settling curve (height of settling slurry as function of time) can be automatically measured. Different vibrating methods and parameters have been tested by the application of a linear motor and mechanical eccentric drive. On the basis of the fundamental research a new thickener, called the rod ? lamella thickener has been developed and an industrial size (50m3/h) mud removing technology has been built. Main parts of the technology are the traditional dredging barge and the thickening technology. The thickening and sand separation technology is tugged by the dredging ship. Its main elements are the homogenization tank, slurry pump, hydrocyclon and the rod ? lamella thickener. In this unit lamellas carry out pre-thickening, then vibrating rods further increase the concentration. The thickened mud is transported out by a screw - of which revolution number is precisely controlled - against a spring supported valve. Paper reports about the design, building, water probe and on-site tests of this mud removing technology. Two new patents had been presented, one is about the rod ? lamella thickener and the other is about the mud removing technology with sand separation.

The majority of the world?s nickel (Ni) resources occur as laterite ores, which are exceptionally complex, lower grade (<1.5% Ni) and expensive to treat using conventional smelting and high temperature/pressure autoclave methods. Heap leaching is a promising, less costly, alternative technology for processing low grade nickel laterite ores. However, significant technical challenges remain with Nickel laterite heap leaching, preventing its general adoption. This paper presents some highlights of laboratory column leaching studies undertaken to characterise, evaluate and optimise sulphuric acid leaching behaviour of Nickel laterite agglomerates. They provide basic but valuable information regarding Nickel laterite agglomerate structure stability and leaching performance under industrially-relevant, continuous acid irrigation conditions. In particular, Nickel and other key metals? (e.g. Co, Fe, Al and Mn) extraction rates, free acid concentration, bed slump and structural changes were determined at a given acid percolation rate as a function of time. Potential implications of the findings, for devising strategies for improved Nickel laterite plant heap leach operations are discussed. Ningxiang-type iron deposit is a most important sedimentary oolitic hematite deposit in China. Its? detected ore reserves are 3.72 billion tons, which is 73.5% of all detected reserves, and there are about 10 billion tons of prognostic resources. It is considered as the ?poor mine? for a long time be-cause of its difficult prooerty. But based on the ore characteristics of different deposits, the technological characteristics of ore are different with great diversity in ore baring horizon, distribution range, deposit scale, ore petrology, ore mineral assemblage and iron content. Through the study of deposit features and technological mineralogy of different Ningxiang-type of iron deposits in China, and based on industrial types and natural types of ore deposits, we divide different technological types according the technological features of the ore such as mineral composition, particle size, dissemination, occurrence of useful elements and harmful elements, the main physical and chemical properties of mineral and geological conditions of deposits, etc, moreover, propose the different utilization, mineral processing technologies and product schemes for the different types of ore.

"The geological environment of the certain uranium-molybdenum deposit is very complicated. While the study of process mineralogy is relatively few, which restricting the processing and leaching effect of ores. According to reaserch on process mineralogy of this mine, the basis of ore processing can be provided. The main contents of research are the uranium occurrence state and the influence of H2O2 in acid leaching. By various methods and experiments, the process of uranium mineralogical characteristics in this deposit are systematically studied. The results show that the uranium is mainly in the form of independent uranium minerals. The structures of these uranium minerals are venous and disseminated in mineral fissures, or microgranular inclusions in quartz and feldspar. It is not appropriate to concentrate the uranium minerals by flotation beneficiation because that the loss rate of target metals via water leaching process is very high. The ores are suitable for being acid leaching directly with 6% – 8% of H2O2, and the maximum leaching rate of uranium can be 96.88%. INTRODUCTION The uranium ores with associated elements have a large proportion in uranium resources (Lei, et al., 2014, Xing, et al., 2006; Ritchy and Wong, 1985). The uranium and molybdenum are easy to be paragenesis in nature enviroment because of their similar chemical properties. Therefor the uranium-molybdenum associated deposits are widely existing, such as the sedimentary sandstone uranium deposit in American with vanadium and molybdenum, the sedimentary sandstone uranium deposits in French with vanadium (Chen, et al., 2014; Lounis, 1997). A certain epithermal porphyry uranium-molybdenum deposit in China is mainly controlled by the subrhyolite- porphyry and the fault zone (Lv, 2012; Rui, 2010; Liu, et al., 2010). The ore properties of this deposit are complex, which include the high alteration degree, and the fine grain size of the target minerals (Ma, et al., 2013). The ore properties and occurrence state are quite different during each mining stage. As a consequence, the consumption of reagent increased and the leaching rate declined as long as the continuously mining. The author explored the best leaching rate of target elements According to the basic research on process mineralogy of present ores, experimental study of water leaching and oxidizing acid leaching on different particle sizes."

"In case of free gold presence in ore, there is always problem of a choice between the gravity-flotation and gravity separation flowsheets. Study of morphology of gold being extracted by different methods allows to find the most efficient solution. One of the latest methods of gold concentration for wide range of grain size (-0.8+0 mm) is a flash flotation. The paper presents comparative testing results of flash and centrifugal separation.The goal of the studies was to determine process and flotation parameters of flash flotation. In case valued minerals are soft if compared to host rock, such minerals tend to concentrate into circulating load of grinding circuit. Thus, valued minerals can be overground, and in turn, will result in low extraction in flotation circuit. Integration of flash flotation operation into process flowsheet has been evaluated. Flash flotation operation can be successfully used not only for gold but also copper, lead, nickel and silver minerals.With low-sulphide ores being a case study under laboratory conditions, various flotation (impeller rotational speed, air flowrate) and process (pulp density, collector consumption, frother consumption, time of flotation) parameters were studied in view of its impact on gold flash flotation. Experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions using special pneumatic mechanical flotation machines.INTRODUCTIONGravity separation is used for extraction of coarse gold before cyanidation and before flotation of polymetallic ores to increase gold total recovery into gravity copper and lead concentrates.Benefit of the flash flotation is efficient recovery of coarse gold carrier particles (sulphides) thus preventing its regrinding and, as a result, low recovery. Furthermore, combination of flash and conventional flotation results in final tailings that do not require further cyanidation.Combined gravity-flotation flowsheets are designed for concentration of ores containing gold within thewide range of grain sizes (see Table 1)."

Optimisation and control of comminution, pelletization, and agglomeration processes is a complex task with large potential for gains in productivity, energy efficiency, and particle size distribution quality. One factor in realising these gains is the requirement for fully-automated online particle size distribution measurement. Moreover, online particle size distribution measurement that is based on the particles on the visible surface and can avoid or mitigate substantial errors that result from under-sizing overlapped particles and over-sizing areas of fines particles. Literature review indicates a body of substantially 2D photographic based particle size measurement systems that suffer from a large number of significant errors except in the simplest case of a monolayer of particles under good illumination with limited color variation in the material. In order to measure the visible particles on a pile there are a number of requirements including; avoiding particle delineation errors due to variation in material color and shadows, detect overlapping versus non-overlapping particles, and identify areas of fine particles as fines and not large rocks. Results are presented using a fully-automated online measurement system of crushed rock on conveyor belt using a 3D surface laser profile. The system provides continuous online measurement and results are shown on over four hours of production after the primary crusher. Size distribution results are calculated using volumetric estimation of the particles on the surface of the pile. The results show a strong capability to discriminate size variation especially in the 10% and 20% passing values. Furthermore results show that if areas of fines are misclassified as large rocks, and overlapped particles misclassified as small rocks, then a near complete loss of discrimination occurs for the P10 and P20 values which become largely constant values.

Stirred milling of laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on a siliceous goethitic (SG) nickel laterite sample (-2000 µm particle size) to evaluate the effect of operating conditions such as stirrer speed, grinding time, pH, solid content, water salinity and charge volume. The target was to produce a -38 µm fraction in the milling product with high nickel recovery and grade. Addition of dispersant (sodium hexametaphosphate) was also optimized with respect to the rheology of the slurry. In terms of stress intensity, the optimum grinding conditions for selective size reduction were: 1000 rpm, 50 per cent charge volume. At higher stress intensity (2000 rpm), Ni recovery in the -38 µm product was higher, but Ni grade was low, due to the breakage of the harder siliceous particles. Decreasing the yield stress by modifying slurry pH or adding dispersant improved the rheological properties of the pulp, but had no great influence on Ni upgrade in the fine product. Modifying water salinity by adding 2 M NaCl had also little effect. The breakage of the +38 µm particles in the feed determined Ni upgrade greatly. Ni grade in the -38 µm product decreased with grinding time, suggesting that the Ni-bearing minerals break first, while the harder siliceous minerals have a lower breakage rate. The breakage rates with respect to sample mass for Ni, Mg and Si indicate that: Mg > Ni > Mass > Si. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min. The Ni grade increased from 0.88 per cent to 1.35 per cent (upgrade 54 per cent), with 24 per cent Ni recovery. Keywords: fine grinding, stirred media mill, nickel laterite, slurry rheology

It is now well known that the size distribution of the particulate solid has a significant effect on the breakage behavior of particles in the wet as well as dry modes of ball milling operation. In the context of the size discretized batch grinding kinetic model, grinding behavior of particles is characterized by the breakage rate parameters, k, and breakage distribution parameters, B. Understanding the nature of variation of these two sets of parameters with particle size distribution is important for simulation and control of operation of production mills. However, so far it has not been possible to track the variation of both the set of parameters with grinding time simultaneously. In this paper an attempt has been made in this direction by using a modified functional form approach with time dependent constants. "Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a typically synthetic depressant and may be used as a depressor of pyrite. The modification of polyacrylamide may improve its physicochemical properties and performances. Sulfonated polyacrylamides (SPAM) with different sulfonation degree (SD) were prepared using sodium sulfite as the sulfonating agent, and the interactions of SPAM and pyrite were investigated by the adsorption experiment in this work. The adsorption tests of SPAM on pyrite were conducted as a function of sulfonation degree, pH value and contact time. Pyrite and SPAM were constructed and optimized through MS software. The interaction mechanisms of sulfonated polyacrylamide and pyrite were simulated by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the adsorption capacities of SPAM at neutral and weak alkaline conditions are higher than that at acidic and strong basic conditions. The high sulfonation degree favors the adsorption of SPAM on pyrite surface. The adsorption process can be described best by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the adsorption of sulfonated polyacrylamide on pyrite is better than that of polyacrylamide. Sulfonated polyacrylamide can be used as a potential depressant of pyrite with the main interacting mechanism of hydrogenbond force.INTRODUCTIONPyrite is the most abundant sulfide mineral and often associated with valuable minerals such as galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite, gold, diaspore as well as coal (Forrest et al., 2001; Jaiswal et al., 2015; Maier and Dobiáš, 1997; Qiu et al., 2017; Xin and Liye, 2010). Froth flotation is the most popular method to remove pyrite from valuable minerals. Pyrite could be floated as the flotation concentrate either by its hydrophobicity or activation by metal ions (Chandra and Gerson, 2009). What is more, pyrite could be seperated as flotation tailing by adding highly selective depressants including inorganic and organic modifiers. Polysaccharides polymers and lignosulfonate-based biopolymers are common natural organic depressants (Deng et al., 2017; Mu et al., 2016). While the synthetic organic products have proved to be particularly versatile in terms of molecule tailing capability and controlled structures (Boulton et al., 2001a; Raffa et al., 2015)."

"In this paper, we present the study’s results of electrical separation processes on the basis of new separator designs, new technological solutions, and newly discovered effects. We considered the options of enrichment by magnet separation of magnetite and titanomagnetite ores, ores and products containing chromium and manganese, ores of non-ferrous and precious metals. During pneumo-electric separation of mixed iron ore of SMPC, 43.3% of the output of the concentrate with an iron content of 61.7% was obtained in one step, with extraction of 70.5%. The paper also presents the results of the finalization on the air-electric separator of the magnetic fraction when separating oxidized ores of MPPOO (mining and processing plant of oxidized ores) on the Jans polygrade magnetic separator. A concentrate was obtained with an iron content of 65.1% with the extraction of 95.0% and tails with an iron content of 13.0%. The possibility of obtaining low-silica concentrates from these ores with an iron content of 67.15 and a quartz of 2.88% is shown. Also, the results of tests on the enrichment of chromite ores on the firing-magnetic scheme with corona-electrostatic separation are considered. On the initial ore of the Don MPP (mining and processing plant), a concentrate with a content of 61.8% Cr2O3 was obtained with a quartz content of ~ 1.0%. The results of pneumo-electric separation with triboelectric charge of the separated particles are presented. The results of the tests indicate a principal possibility of enriching chromite ores without costly high-temperature roasting. Dry technology of enrichment of manganese ores with the use of electrical separation increases the quality of the oxidized concentrate to the first grade and raises the total extraction by 2 times. For the Chineya deposit of titanomagnetite ores with copper impurities, electroseparation operations were carried out on two samples with a Cu content of 1.93 and 3.75%, respectively. For a sample with a Cu content of 6.02%, a copper concentrate output of 24.42% was obtained with a Cu content of 23.82% and the extraction of 94.88%. The results of enrichment by electroseparation of gold-containing sulfide ores can have the practical importance. For ores of the Berezovskoye deposit, a pyritic concentrate containing 100 g / t of gold was obtained after two or three operations of IES (integrated energy systems)."

The need for a sustainable development of ore deposits makes it imperative to be innovative and mindful in creating an economically and environmentally viable operation, while maintaining a good working relationship with the various stakeholders involved in developing and operating a large and complex mining project. This is becoming immensely important as gold ore deposits are becoming more mineralogically complex along with lower grades presenting both metallurgical and environmental challenges that need to be addressed in mitigating risks and improving project economics. This paper presents Barrick?s approach to development of strategic technologies for our long-term sustainable growth through conversion of valuable resources into reserves for both our green-field development projects and the expansion of our existing mining operations. Some of the key strategic solutions, including mineral processing, metallurgical and energy technologies, developed by Barrick and their impact on some of our complex gold and copper-gold ores will also be discussed in this paper. The phosphate ore sample was taken from the iron tailings after recovering most of magnetite by magnetic separation in Longlin, Yunnan Province of China. Batch flotation tests had been conducted to upgrade the phosphate concentrate by conventional fatty acids reagents under 70% -75 µm of the particle size; however, the unsatisfied results (P2O5 grade of 27.84% and recovery of 49.25%) were obtained. Also there are a large amount of slimes trapped in the concentrate and high-dosages consumption of reagents, for example, more than15 kg/t soda ash and 2 kg/t sodium silicate at only one-staged roughing. Based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the sample, most of gangues are clay, quartz, and chlorite, which may easy to over-grind and deteriorate the flotation process either on reagents consumption or slurry fluidity or viscosity. A hydro-cyclone had been introduced to pre-concentrate the phosphate ore by scrubbing the slime before flotation, which can result obviously in reducing the dosages of soda ash from 15 Kg/t to 4 Kg/t, and raising the grade of P2O5 in the concentrate from 27.84% to 36.13% at the expense of about 4% recovery of P2O5. They also substantially reduced the time of sedimentation of concentrate after flotation from ~10 to ~1 min. In this paper, the effects on the recovery of P2O5 by the different dosages of flotation reagents with or without de-sliming were studied, with the objective of determining the different effects on the functions of flotation reagents by slime during flotation. "Environmental concerns necessitate the recycling of process water within mining operations. Given that recycled water is chemically different from fresh water, and collectors are added such that they adsorb at the liquid-particle interface, changes in the aqueous phase are expected to affect collector adsorption. A Finnish nickel-copper ore was floated in synthetic plant waters of varying ionic strengths and plant waters obtained at Boliden Kevitsa Mine, with aerophine and sodium isopropyl xanthate as collectors. Of the tested waters, the copper thickener overflow was the least conducive to xanthate adsorption and valuable mineral recovery. The nickel thickener overflow, standard process water, and raw water were the most conducive to xanthate adsorption. For the raw water and nickel thickener overflow, increased adsorption correlated with increased valuable mineral recovery. Further, recycling xanthate retained in water affected the selectivity of the collector and hence the concentrate grades.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a separation process that exploits the differences in the surface properties of the particles being separated. The efficiency of separation is dependent on the degree of hydrophobicity achieved by the particles meant to be floated, which are, in most cases, valuable minerals. The hydrophobicity is in turn dependent on the adsorption of the chosen collector onto the surfaces of the floated particles (Fuerstenau, 1984; Taggart and Hassialis, 1946). Empirical findings suggest that species dissolved in solution strongly influence collector adsorption and overall flotation response (Fuerstenau and Chander, 1986). Vanadium-beard bone coal is one of important vanadium resources in China.To extract vanadium tailings from Stone coal is produced after extracted vanadium from stone coal through the roasting, leaching and other processes. About 120-150 tons of tailings will be produced in extracting 1 ton of vanadium pentoxide. A lot of tailings that are willfully piled up have caused serious environmental pollution and wasting of resources; it is therefore necessary to realize its resource utilization. This study increases the activity of vanadium tailings by means of alkali fusion, and then uses different alkali activators to react with vanadium tailings so that geopolymer with high value added is produced. Sample of geopolymer is acquired from a mixture containing vanadium tailings, alkali activators, water and a little sodium aluminate through compression-molding process under 20MPa pressure. After cured in room temperature for three days, the maximum compressive strength of the sample can reach 36.2MPa. XRD analysis indicates quartz, the major crystal phase in vanadium tailings is decomposed,and the activity of vanadium tailings is heightened. FTIR and SEM analyses show: structural change having an important impact on the mechanical strength of geopolymer occurred during the process of vanadium tailings generating geopolymer.
