"The Casa-Berardi East, Center and West deposits, located in the Archean Abitibi, Sub province, are hosted by volcanic and sedimentary units of varying compositions, less than300 m from the Casa-Berardi fault (CBF). The CBF, a brittle structure, represents an increment in the structural evolution of a regional-scale deformation zone showing ductile-brittle behavior known as the Casa-Berardi deformation zone (CBDZ). The CBDZ is characterized by a mylonitic Sc1 foliation which is folded a.n4 deformed by a later sczfoliation in high strain zones.Four generations of quartz vein and fracture systems have been recognized within the Casa-Berardi deposits. Most economic gold mineralization, occurring in the second generation system, is found within high strain zones. This system hosts three types of mineralized structures: (1) banded quartz veins; (2) swarms of veins and mineralized host rocks; and (3) disseminated sulphides along fractures. An early carbonate hydrothermal alteration zone (pre- to syntectonic) surrounds the deposits. Alteration associated with gold mineralization is contemporaneous to late ( syn- to post-tectonic) relative to the development of progressive deformation in the CBDZ. The geological characteristics and paragenesis of the four quartz vein and fracture systems developed as an integral part of the geodynamic evolution of the Casa-Berardi deformation zone."

The Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element (REE) Project in Malawi is a near surface carbonatite-hosted deposit with synchysite and apatite as the key REE bearing minerals. A strong focus has been placed on understanding the REE mineralogy of the Songwe Hill carbonatite as REE mineralogical characterization is a crucial component at all steps, ranging from exploration to production, in the development of REE deposits. Extensive mineralogical work has been completed at Camborne School of Mines (CSM), Natural History Museum (NHM) London, British Geological Survey (BGS), Nottingham, Aberystwyth University, Wales, Mintek, South Africa, and SGS Inc. Canada (SGS). The following analytical techniques were used: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and QEMSCAN®. The detailed studies have demonstrated that while synchysite is light-REE enriched as expected, apatite, abundant in all stages of carbonatite emplacement at Songwe, is anomalously enriched in mid- to heavy-REE relative to apatite in other carbonatite deposits. The distribution of REE within synchysite and apatite at Songwe has had important implications for the direction of the metallurgical work with respect to the behaviour of light and heavy REE through the flotation and hydrometallurgical stages of the flow sheet.

This study aims to recover europium, yttrium metals, some valuable salts or oxides from the white powder (apatite) coating the inner surface of spent florescent lamps (SFLs). Pressure leaching using sulphuric/nitric acid successfully dissolved the metals of interest. Europium or yttrium metals were obtained by hydrogen reduction of their oxides. Addition of potassium thiocyanate converted the dissolved sulphates to thiocyanates. Selective separation of Eu and Y was then carried out by solvent extraction from the thiocyanate solution. The used solvent was trimethyl-benzylammonium chloride. N-trihutylphosphate in 1 M nitric acid was used to strip the metal loaded in the organic phase. Results showed that the quality of the cleaned glass tubes of the SFL met the standard requirement for the lamp manufacture. The white powder (WP) is composed of calcium sulphate 35.2%, phosphate 61.5% and oxides of europium and yttrium 1.65%wt. respectively. Autoclave digestion of the WP for 4 h at 120°C and 500 kPa in sulphuric acid/nitric acid mixture dissolved 96.4% of yttrium and 92.8% of europium. The conversion rate of sulphate to thiocyanate was favoured at low temperature. Stripping of Eu and Y from the loaded organic phase behaved in an opposite way. A metal separation factor of 9.4 was obtained. ate recovered europium and yttrium salts were selectively separated using ethyl alcohol or dilute nitric acid. Yttrium was very soluble while europium was not. Europium and yttrium metals were obtained by hydrogen gas reduction at 850°C and 1575°C respectively.

The leaching of gold with thiosulfate solutions in the absence of ammonia and copper ions was investigated using electrochemical and kinetic methods. In sodium thiosulfate solutions, the electrochemical oxidation of gold was hindered and the leaching rate using pure oxygen as the oxidant was very slow. It was found that the addition of a small amount of thiourea or formamidine disulfide to the thiosulfate solution greatly enhanced the oxidation of gold. However, the enhancement to the overall dissolution of gold using dissolved oxygen as the oxidant was limited. This was attributed to the fact that the oxygen reduction process was unaffected by the additives and remained slow, which limited further improvement to the overall kinetics. An alternative oxidant, the ferric EDTA complex having a reduction potential of approximately 0.12 V, was found to be promising. The cathodic reduction of ferric EDTA was fast and reversible at neutral pH. While the ferric EDTA complex was effective in oxidizing gold, it did not appear to significantly oxidize thiosulfate. A thiosulfate solution containing thiourea and ferric EDTA has been shown to quickly dissolve gold in the form of a powder as well as from gold ores. In the leaching with the ores high gold recoveries of above 90% was achieved with the best performance obtained in neutral solutions (pH 6-7).

"Aluminum has the disadvantage of low strength. In order to obtain the high strength composites, crystals were refined in the composites. Grain refinement was approached at two process points, generating new grains and grain growth. It is important for refinement how to control the grain growth. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique and TiB2powder addition prevent grain growth. To investigate effects of strain and additives to the alloy, aluminum powder was sintered at 70 MPa and 80 MPa, changing the content of TiB2additive powder by SPS method. As the results, the crystal grain size was finer in the composite sintered at higher sintering pressure and with larger amount of additive, though over 1.0mass% TiB2addition dissuades grain refining. These grain refinements improve hardness and tensile strength of sintered aluminum alloys.INTRODUCTIONAluminum matrix composites have low density, high specific strength, and low cost. Their applications are growing continuously in the field of automotive and aerospace industries. Recent studies to improve their good mechanical and tribological properties use different ceramic materials such as Al2O3(Das, Munroe, & Bandyopadhyay, 1996; Ashwatha & Anthony Xaviorb, 2014),SiC(Hassani, Bagherpour, & Qods, 2014), B4C(Ehsan, Masoud, Touradj, Amir Hossein, & Ali, 2015),TiC(Ehsan, Ali, Masoud, Kamyar, & Touradj, 2017), and TiB2(Fei & Zhong-Hua, 2013).On the other hand, grain refinement is also an important techniques for improving the properties of aluminum alloys. Finer grains improve the mechanical properties of the alloy. For cast and wrought alloys, addition of grain refiners in molten alloys accelerates generation of nucleus and suppresses grain growth. Al-Ti-B alloy is generally added as grain refiners in the molten aluminum alloys(Easton & Stjohn, 2001). Especially, TiB2has very high melting point, low density, and excellent hardness. Therefore, TiB2was selected as additions into aluminum alloys. Liquids reaction leads to high cost, oxidation, discoloration of molten alloy, and clustering of additive powder as compared with solid reaction such as sintering. However, sintering of aluminum alloy powder with ceramic powders is difficult for oxide layer surface. Recently, we take attention to spark plasma sintering (SPS) as advanced sintering process. SPS process can easily sinter a high quality specimen at a lower sintering temperature and in a shorter time than conventional sintering processes. By SPS process, we have sintered titanium powders that are as difficult to be sintered by any other processes as aluminum powders, and improved mechanical properties by adding hard ceramic powders TiC and TiB(Kamegawa, Izui, Komiya, Kobayashi, & Arimoto, 2015; Sampei, Izui, Komiya, Shigimura, & Suzuki, 2015). Furthermore, it is important to consider not only pure aluminum but alloys for solid-solution or precipitation strengthening. Actually, pure Al does not have enough strength compared with the alloys. Al-Cu alloy and Al-Mg alloy demonstrate adequate strength for industrial and commercial sectors. Al-Mg alloy retains good formability, and has high resistance to corrosion. It is therefore used for many applications. We must consider alloying processes. The most cost effective process is blended elemental technology where alloying elements are added to base powder as elemental or master alloy powder (Smugeresky & Dawson, 1981; Yasue, Radjai, Miwa, & Sakaguchi, 2003; Bolzoni, Esteban, Ruiz-Navas, & Gordo, 2012)."

Sadiola Gold Mine is an open pit operation located in Mali and owned by Anglogold Ashanti Ltd, Iamgold Corporation and the State of Mali. A conventional cyanidation process (cyanidation/CIP) treats 15,000 tpd (of a mixture of oxide and sulphide ores) at an average grade of 3 g/t Au. In 2002, the increasing tonnage of sulphides caused an increase in production costs and a decrease in gold extraction (from 95% to 70-76%). Because of the short retention time of the leach circuit (18 hours) and the refractory nature of the sulphides, gold leaching kinetics are critical. A laboratory investigation was initiated to evaluate actual plant practice and identify a means of improving the gold leaching rate. The study was conducted on a "soft" sulphide gold sample containing 4.96 g/t Au, 0.4 g/t Ag, 2.5% pyrite, 1.2% arsenopyrite, and 0.2% pyrrhotite with a P80 of 74microns. Pre-leaching significantly influenced the gold leaching rate. A short pre-leach (2 hours) performed at pH 8, a DO of 8 ppm, and with 300 g/t lead nitrate added at the start or the end, produced the preferred conditions. Pre-leaching for more than 2 hours was detrimental to gold extraction. The cyanide concentration had to be maintained at 450 ppm NaCN to reach a maximum gold extraction within the retention time of the circuit. A maximum extraction of 81.3% Au was obtained in 20 hours (leach residue at 0.97 g/t Au). A high level of dissolved oxygen in the pre-leach was not of any benefit. Extension of gold leaching beyond 20 hours indicated that all leachable gold had been extracted by that time. Plant modifications were made to allow leaching of oxides and sulphides in separate circuits. Treatment of oxide ores is now performed at a higher rate. Sulphides are processed at a lower throughput, with 300 g/t lead nitrate, to allow a retention time of 22 hours. Combined throughput remains the same, and total gold recovery has increased from 76% to 80% for an additional gold production of 16,000 ounces per year.

"With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. Introduction This paper presents in detailed form the results of settling tests that were published in a few preliminary notes in the April 1949 issue of the Bulletin (p. 166). Carborel is the trade name for sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and aluminium carboxymethyl-cellulose produced by the reaction of monochloroacetic acid on the alkali cellulose to form an ether. The water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose has been known in Europe for several years as sodium cellulose glycolate and has been marketed under several trade names. These cellulose ethers, however, are relatively new in North America, where the name carboxymethyl-cellulose is often abbreviated to C.M.C., or they are referred to as cellulose gum. The particular grade of Carboxel used in the settling tests in the mill of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is the high-viscosity sodium carboxymethyl- cellulose known as Carboxel H.V. It is a white, fluffy powder and is hygroscopic, although not deliquescent. Carboxel solutions in water are colourless, odourless, and resistant to beat and light. They are stable to alkalies, but are precipitated by acids when the pH is reduced below 4.0, and also by solutions of soluble lead, iron, copper, aluminium, and chromium salts. Solutions of Carboxel exhibit the properties of hydrophilic colloids.

"Abstract - MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic data collected over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide deposits have been modeled using three modeling packages. The EMQ package is a quick inversion tool which indicates that the Iso body is a dipping, plate-like body. The New Insco body is inferred to have a geometry somewhere between a dipping plate and a sphere. The Maxwell package was used to refine the properties of the plate-like body at Iso. The EMIGMA package was able to identify which parts of the New Insco orebody were more conductive. It was observed that the most conductive parts correspond to copper-rich zones and the next most conductive to pyrite-rich zones. The EMIGMA package was also used to show that a thick-prism model might be more appropriate for the New Insco orebody. Gravity modeling constrained by the known geology was successful in identifying the denser sulfide zones. The densest zones appear to be pyrite rich. Magnetic modeling identified diabase dikes. Over New Insco, a small magnetic anomaly was attributed to pyrrhotite-rich sulfides. There was only a weak magnetic anomaly over the Iso body, consistent with the nonmagnetic sulfides logged in the holes drilled at that location. L’outil Maxwell a été utilisé pour raffiner les propriétés du dépôt Iso. L’outil EMIGMA nous a permis d’identifier les différences de conductivité à l’intérieur du dépôt Iso. Il a été observé que la partie la plus conductrice correspond à la zone riche en cuivre, suivie par la zone riche en pyrite. L’outil EMIGMA a aussi permis de montrer qu’un modèle de prisme épais pourrait être plus approprié pour décrire le dépôt New Insco. La modélisation des données gravimétriques, contrainte par la géologie connue, définit bien la zone de sulfures massifs. La zone de pyrite semble être la plus dense. La modélisation des données magnétiques identifie bien les dykes de diabase. Au-dessus du dépôt New Insco, on observe une faible anomalie magnétique correspondant aux sulfures non magnétiques observés dans les carottes de forages à cet endroit."

"Mercury is produced as a byproduct from gold mines and, historically, has been transferred to recyclers and used for various industrial processes and products. However, under the Minamata Convention on Mercury, adopted in 2013,the intentional use of mercury in processes or products will be minimized in the world. Surplus elemental mercury should be treated as a hazardous waste and consequently, should be converted to a more stable chemical form for long-term storage or permanent disposal. A stabilization method has been developed to react mercury and sulfur using a planetary ball mill. The planetary ball mill can produce high-energy conditions and enable samples to react within a short period of time. A series of tests has been conducted to confirm that mercury sulfide can be produced using a bench scale machine with 2400 mL pot. Under a suitable experimental condition with 25 mm ball diameter, 30%of ball filling rate and 1.05 of molar ratio of S/Hg, a powdered mercury sulfide product was successfully obtained in 60 minutes. The leach ability and atmospheric emission from the product was extremely low. This stabilization method would contribute to an environmentally sound mercury management strategy for the gold industry.INTRODUCTIONDue to its unique physical and chemical properties, mercury has numerous applications, including in industry and medicine. However, mercury and its compounds are highly toxic. For example, in Japan, methyl mercury in waste water caused Minamata disease in the 1950s, which affected large numbers of people (Minamata Disease Municipal Museum, 2001). In recent years, environmental pollution caused by emissions and releases of mercury into the atmosphere, waterbody and land by various emission sources such as coal fire plants, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), non-ferrous metal industries, waste incinerations etc. has also become a significant problem. To protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and its compounds, the Minamata Convention on Mercury was adopted in 2013(UNEP, 2013)Because ground gold ore typically contains mercury at 0 to 100 ppm, mercury is often produced as a byproduct from gold mines (UNEP, 2016). In gold mining operations, mercury can be released from the ore by roasting or by leaching in cyanide solutions and recovery onto activated carbon. According to Yanget al. (2016), 85.1%of mercury in a concentrate was vaporized during a roasting process. Both processes finally discharge elemental mercury as a byproduct. In the USA, more than 100 ton of mercury was discharged from large-scale and industrial gold mining (Miller, 2004)."

This study examined the effects of pH and sulphate concentration on the surface charge and stability of alumina and pyrite dispersions. The relationship between these properties was investigated using measurements of electrophoretic mobility and settling velocity. The maximum aggregation for both minerals was observed near the iso-electric point (iep) where the force of repulsion is at a minimum. Aggregation decreased at pH values away from the iep, where an increased surface charge causes electrostatic repulsion between particles. Zeta potential data revealed that sulphate ions were adsorbed only on positively charged surfaces for both minerals. Adsorption of sulphates on the alumina surface increased aggregation by reducing the surface charge from >+25 mV to close to zero. These results indicate an electrostatic bonding of sulphate ions to alumina surface. Preliminary results on the interaction of pyrite and sulphate ions indicate a similar response.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. The Steering Committee, supported by McKinsey, conducts briefings with a range of gold producers to share its findings and to understand producers? perspectives on an industry-funded marketing campaign. "The boron-bearing iron concentrate was extracted from ludwigite ore by the process of magnetic-gravity separation. In order to fully utilize the refractory ore and meet the boron consumption of China, a novel process for separation of boron from iron in boron-bearing iron concentrate was proposed in this paper. In particular, laboratory scale experiments of improving boron reactivity were performed. Fine boron-bearing iron concentrate briquettes were reduced by bituminous coal completely at 1125 °C for 150 min. The effect of sodium carbonate, which was used as an additive in the roasting process, was investigated. The addition of sodium carbonate decreased the boron reactivity and facilitated the volatilization of boron. The influence of diverse cooling methods of the reduced samples on the boron reactivity was studied. The results indicated that boron reactivity could reach up to 80.76% when the reduced samples were cooled by rapid water quenching. In addition, the magnetic material containing 92.71 % Fe with a recovery of 95.11 % and boron-rich non-magnetic material containing 14.51% B2O3 with a recovery 88.85% could be obtained by low-intensity magnetic separation. The magnetic material and boron-rich non-magnetic material were good raw materials for steel-making and borax production, respectively.INTRODUCTION Ludwigite ore is abundant in Liaoning province of China, with 28.43 Mt B2O3 accounting for 57% of the boron resources of the country (Liu et al., 2006). However, it has not yet been utilized on an industrial scale due to its complex mineralogy and fine mineral dissemination (Wang, Wang, Ding, Ma & Xue, 2012). At present, boron-bearing iron concentrate and boron concentrate can be obtained from ludwigite ore using magnetic-gravity separation. The boron concentrate contains B2O3 12%~16%, which can be used as a high-quality raw material for the boron chemical industry after activated roasting, but the B2O3 content in the iron concentrate reaches up to 4%~6%. In order to further separate boron and iron from boron-bearing iron concentrate, a blast furnace and a solid pre-reduction followed by electric arc furnace melting have been proposed (Liu, Cui & Zhang, 1998; Wang et al., 2012). However, both of these two current routes face the same crucial problem that molten boron-rich slag has to be cooled slowly to obtain the alkali-dissolution activity of boron, which affects the yield of boron resource."

THE Ontario Refining Company, Limited, wholly-owned subsidiary of The International Nickel Company of Canada, refines the entire blister copper output of the latter's Copper Cliff smelter. Prior to 1936, the blister was cast in 460-lb. cakes at the smelter, loaded on open cars, and transported by rail to the refinery, a distance of approximately 1 1/4 miles. Here the cakes were transferred to the plant narrow-gauge system, charged to furnaces, and re-melted. This procedure necessitated the operation of holding furnaces and casting machines at the smelter -extensive re-handling-and melting down of a cold charge at the refinery. Transfer of the copper in molten form direct from converters to anode furnaces promised a considerable reduction in costs, and this possibility was investigated. As a result, a portable holding furnace, or hot-metal car, was designed and constructed. It was placed in operation in July, 1936, to be followed a year later by three additional units of slightly modified design. Figure 1 shows the original car, and Figure 2 the lacer type. With four cars in service, operations were placed on an all 'hot-metal' basis.

A mechanism of scorodite formation at ambient pressure was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Several types of iron arsenate were obtained from Fe/As solutions (Fe/As = 1.0 and 1.5) at pH values of 1.0, 1.25 and 1.5 at 95°C. Amorphous FeAsO4.xH2O was precipitated from solutions having a higher mole ratio of Fe/As at pH l.5, even after 9 hours. A few micron sized particles were observed by SEM, but these proved to be agglomerates of 10-50 nm amorphous FeAsarxH2O particles when observed by TEM. This means that supersaturation of the solution causes the acceleration of nucleation of iron arsenate hydrate. Crystalline scorodite was obtained from a solution in which the Fe/As mole ratio was unity, at pH l.0 and pH 1.5, after 3 hours. Almond-type crystalline scorodite particles were observed by TEM and most of them showed high crystallinity. The addition of scorodite seed material enhanced the crystallization. Amorphous FeAsO4.xH2O, however, was observed at the surface of the seeds during the early stages of precipitation. It is postulated that crystalline scorodite is not directly precipitated even on crystalline scorodite seeds, but requires a certain time to crystallize on the seed material.

The utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and model based 3-D control of work machines have increased a lot in new road construction in Finland as well as in other Nordic Countries. Up today, much less attention has been paid into the development of maintenance and rehabilitation processes. As a part of a large research and development program RYM PRE Infra FIN BIM in Finland, a focused research project of the BIM with experiments in total five (5) pilot projects has been performed. A main idea of the new BIM based process has been to utilize mobile laser scanning method for initial data acquirement, the use of novel 3-D analyze and modelling methods for point cloud processing, the use of new type optimization method for the planning of geometric and structural improvements needed for the existing uneven road surfaces, and further, through the creation of 3-D machine control models apply the newest 3- D machine control systems for continuous 3-D control of practical construction work using milling machine and asphalt paver. Finally, an evaluation is made between the new process model and the traditional way of working.

The CSP technology symbolizes a highly productive process for the cost-effective production of steel grades with a range of sophisticated properties comprising both the inner quality of hot strip, its surface formation as well as the relating technological characteristics. Thanks to extensive development work undertaken during the last 15 years, the range of steel grades that can be produced was continuously expanded and the process technology optimized. The present paper describes the ongoing development work concerning the production of higher-strength, microalloyed pipe steels. The resulting hot strip, due to the associated thickness and the potential pipe diameters, is particularly suited for being processed to HFI-welded pipes. Based both on ferrite-pearlite as well as very fine-grained, ferrite-bainite hot-strip microstructures, strength levels of up to grade API X80 can be realized. It can be demonstrated that hot strip produced in a CSP plant has very good toughness values at temperatures down to -60°C and can even make application with required sour-gas resistance possible.

The basic principles of systems analysis are presented. A model has been designed to determine the location of the Main opening in the presence of three or more stock orebodies. The necessary condition is to find a location for the Collection point which is an essential element in opening up each orebody (stock). The model takes into account the total transportation costs from each orebody to the collection point. Three variants are considered provided that the orefield is divided into two levels at least: - a collection point is designed at every level; - a collection point is designed at the lowest level, i.e. where the so-called concentration level is formed; - the collection point is located at a point between the planes of the two levels; The effect of the depth of mining and mine output on determining the method of opening up the orefield has been analyzed by considering a vertical and/or an inclined shaft. A function has been constructed which allows for investigating in both a static and dynamic regime the capital costs for constructing the whole complex including the shaft. The character of the function does not allow finding the global limits. Therefore, it is of particular importance to specify the limiting conditions. In this case these are the flow capacity of development openings and the shaft. The basic groups of cost and natural indicators for assessing and selecting an optimal technological solution have been systematized. The combined analysis of the two approaches to finding the location of the Main opening and determining the mining method enables us to determine when an inclined shaft is best, and the depth at which opening by a vertical shaft has no alternative. Thus, a transition area is formed for which the selection of an optimal technological solution requires an analysis similar to that proposed in this paper. Conclusions are finally drawn which serve as a basis for determining the areas of application of each opening, including the use of a combined scheme of mine opening. The approach presented can be used in both investigating the possibilities for opening up new orefields and reconstructing existing ones in cases when the mining operations go deeper.

In Comparison to the application of HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) in the cement industry and in iron ore processing, the introduction of this energy-efficient comminution technology to processing of nonferrous base-metal ores has progressed slowly as yet. In the field of minerals industry, challenges lies not only in the large variety of the feed material with respect to particle size, density, hardness, moisture and mineralogy of the material but also in complexity of the processing flowsheet, which need to be addressed from case to case based on result of HPGR comminution test work. Whereas conventional comminution test with HPGR in lab-scale or pilot scale needs quite a large amount of feed material, a compressive stressing test of particle-bed in piston-die device provides an effective way to study interparticle breakage behavior of ore material with much less feed. In the present study the effects of interparticle breakage on comminution of a copper ore has been investigated by compressive stressing of particle bed in a piston-die device. The feeds to the particle-bed stressing tests were four narrow size fractions in the size range of 0.3~3.35 mm and a broad size fraction of 0/3.35 mm. The pressures applied were in the range between 30 and 180 MPa. The results showed that the specific energy consumption increases linearly with the pressure; the product fineness increases also with the pressure, but the magnitude of this increase declines as the pressure goes up. Under the same stressing intensity, the product size distribution curve becomes steeper as the particle size decreases, so there is no self-similarity between product size distributions of different feed sizes. The suitability of a material-characterization model for interparticle breakage was verified for this ore. In addition, the effect of interparticle breakage on comminution of this ore with respect to its influence on the downstream flotation were analyzed in terms of size-metal distribution and mineral liberation.

"The Polymetallic Twin Metals Project deposits in Northern Minnesota are being developed by Twin Metals Minnesota. Amongst the flowsheet alternatives being examined at a prefeasibility study level is one involving flotation of a bulk concentrate followed by high temperature autoclaving of the concentrate using the PlatsolTM Process to solubilize all the valuable metals in the concentrate (Cu, Ni, Pt, Pd and Au). Autoclave operating conditions have been established in which recoveries of all the pay metals are in the 92 to 99% range, and the autoclave residence time has been reduced to an hour. The stability of the precious metals in solution after autoclaving has been assessed, as well as the impact of internally recycling process liquors to the feed to the autoclave.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum group metals (PGMs; platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium) are traditionally recovered from their ores by production of a high-grade concentrate by flotation and/or gravity concentration followed by smelting of the concentrate. Concentrates are smelted to remove nonsulphide minerals and converted to remove iron and sulphur. The resulting high PGM grade matte is processed hydrometallurgically to leach the base metals, leaving a residue with a very high grade (20-40%) PGM concentrate for final refining to individual PGMs. Due to the complexity of this process and its high capital cost, this process can only be applied economically to high grade PGM ores. Lower grade PGM concentrates might be accepted as copper and nickel concentrates but may not yield attractive payment terms for the PGMs. The mineralized Duluth Gabbro region of Minnesota hosts several low grade base and PGM deposits and Twin Metals Minnesota is working to develop the Twin Metals Project deposits. Earlier studies at both pre-feasibility and feasibility level, by other mining companies, have failed to yield an economically viable project based on the traditional process. It is possible to produce a saleable copper concentrate from these ores, but economic recovery of nickel and PGMs into saleable concentrates proved elusive.In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s the Platsol™ process was developed at SGS in Lakefield, Ontario (at the time Lakefield Research Limited) for the NorthMet deposit (also within the Duluth Gabbro) owned by PolyMet Mining. The process developed was a high temperature chloride-assisted pressure oxidation process capable of dissolving simultaneously the base metals (Cu, Ni, Co, Zn), gold and the PGMs."
