The present work reports a study of production of thorium concentrate from Egyptian monazite by decomposition of ammonium carbonate solutions containing ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes. These solutions were obtained from the processing of monazite by alkaline leaching in ball-mill autoclaves, followed by selective separation of thorium and uranium from lanthanides by autoclave leaching of the hydroxide cake obtained with ammonium carbonate - bicarbonate solutions. The separation of thorium and uranium in the form of thorium concentrate from their carbonate complexes was achieved by different methods, including neutralization of solutions at pH = 6.7 by acid, addition of alkali at pH = 11.5, heating of solution at 100°C and processing of carbonate solution with steam under pressure in steel autoclaves. Processing of solutions of thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes in an autoclave with steam causes their decomposition. Complete recovery of thorium 99.8% and 98.4% uranium recovery in thorium concentrate was attained at 120°C and steam pressure 2 atm, within 10 min. Meanwhile, the recovery of lanthanides was low and did not exceed 1.1%. The thorium concentrate produced contains 67.82% Th, 4.6% U and 3.14% REE. All methods achieve complete separation of thorium and uranium from their carbonate solutions, but the first two methods are unfavourable for the industry due to the high cost of reagents and their inability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate. The decomposition of ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes with steam under pressure is recommended for industrial application for its simplicity and the ability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate.

"IntroductionMost base metal mines sell their concentrate to a custom smelter. The two parties concerned therefore draw up a contract which would detail the conditions under which concentrate sales will take place. The contract will identify treatment and marketing charges (including escalations), deductions for metal losses in the smelter, pricing formula, timing of payments, penalties for deleterious elements, etc.An understanding of the smelter contract is important to the mineral processor, for it will determine how he operates the plant to maximize economic return.Description of Contract ClausesUsing copper concentrate as an example, the smelter contract generally contains the following three basic charges:I. Metal Deductions- as the smelting process does not recover all the metal contained;2. A Smelting Charge- expressed per ton of material to cover costs on the bulk material such as receiving, unloading, thawing in winter, sampling, roasting to drive off sulphur, smelting through the matte and blister stages to recover mostof the copper and precious metals;3. A Refining Charge- expressed per pound of copper.The following is a review in some detail of a number of clauses which could be considered typical of a treatment and marketing type of copper concentrate sales contract. Most normal considerations in an agreement could be covered by the following types of clauses.Terminology- covers definitions, units of measurement to be used (e.g. short tons, troy ounces, etc.), currency (Canadian dollars). The term ""unit"" may be defined - l OJo of a ton of concentrate, e.g. one unit of copper means 20 pounds of copper per short ton of concentrate."

"6xxx-series Al alloys are the most commonly used alloys in the automotive industry as they have an appropriate balance of strength, corrosion resistance and formability. The main strengthening phase in these alloys is the ß’-Mg2Si precipitates. One opportunity to achieve stronger 6xxx-series Al alloys, without affecting corrosion and formability, is the use of Sc. The main challenge of using Sc in 6xxx-series lies in the heat treatment, which must be designed to allow for a fine precipitation of both Al3Sc and ß’-Mg2Si. In this work, two model alloys are used, an Al-Sc-Zr and an Al-Mg-Si-Cu-Sc-Zr, to explore the impact of the 6xxx-series key elements (Mg, Si and Cu) on the Al3Sc precipitates. Transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography are used to investigate the precipitates present in the microstructure after casting. We find that higher Si content results in the formation of dispersoids upon casting. The average composition of these dispersoids is (Al0.8,Si0.2)3 (Sc0.888,Zr0.024,Mg0.08,Cu0.008). A closer look at the solid solution reveals that most of the Sc and Zr is supersaturated after casting even in the presence of Mg, Si and Cu. We discuss the impact of these results on the design of a suitable heat treatment for 6xxx-series alloys with Sc.INTRODUCTION The most common strategy to strengthen aluminum (Al) alloys is by micro-alloying to form a fine distribution of precipitates (Gladman, 1999). Whilst precipitates enhance the strength, this is often done to the detriment of ductility and corrosion performance (Davis, 1999). The 6xxx-series Al alloys are heavily used in the automotive industry as they offer an appropriate balance of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance (W. S. Miller et al., 2000). The strength increment in these alloys comes from the formation of the ß’–Mg2Si and the quaternary Q’ phase (Chakrabarti & Laughlin, 2004; Polmear, St. John, Nie, & Qian, 2017). One opportunity to achieve stronger 6xxx-series alloys, whilst keeping good balance of corrosion resistance and formability, is the use of small additions of scandium (Sc). Sc is one of the most potent strengtheners in Al alloys (Dorin, Ramajayam, Vahid, & Langan, 2018; Røyset & Ryum, 2005). Most of the strengthening benefits from Sc come from the formation of fine Al3Sc dispersoids. The following strengthening mechanisms apply to Sc: 1) Solid solution strengthening, 2) precipitation hardening, 3) inhibiting recrystallization, 4) assisting nucleation of other strengthening phases (Dorin, Ramajayam, Lamb, & Langan, 2017). As compared to other dispersoid phases, Al3Sc dispersoids have good electrochemical compatibility with Al alloys and hence do not affect their corrosion resistance (Cavanaugh, Birbilis, Buchheit, & Bovard, 2007). The coarsening resistance of Al3Sc is often improved by adding zirconium (Zr), as it forms a Zr rich shell around Al3Sc which prevents Sc from moving across the interface."

The shortage of freshwater has been a major challenge for mineral flotation in arid areas. When using high salinity water, certain electrolytes are detrimental to flotation while others can improve the flotability of minerals. In this paper, the flotation behaviors and contact angles of pyrite in both Milli-Q water and high salinity water were investigated using different collectors at various pH levels. Results show that the thionocarbamate has a less affinity to pyrite in different solutions under mildly alkaline conditions as compared with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and N-isopropoxypropyl-N’-ethoxycarbonyl thiourea (iPOPECTU). At high pH levels, the slime coating on pyrite surfaces, which is caused by colloidal precipitates of magnesium and calcium ions in seawater, was confirmed by SEM, EDX and in-situ zeta potential measurement. The slime coating of colloidal precipitates on mineral surfaces led to low recovery of pyrite at high pH levels. The study of flotation behavior of pyrite in high salinity water improves our fundamental understanding of mineral flotation in seawater.

In Alberta, Canada, heavy industrial projects are constructed using a prefabrication approach: spools and pipes are produced in the factory, and are assembled into modules that are transported to the industrial plants for installation by mobile cranes. Planning the onsite mobile crane operations is critical to the project budget and schedule. However, due to the large magnitude of industrial projects, manual heavy lift planning is tedious, and the results are not particularly responsive to site changes. This paper introduces an integrated mobile crane management system developed by PCL Industrial Management Inc., in collaboration with the University of Alberta, which investigates crane location selection and path checking for field module assembly. The project information is stored in a database, and the proposed system retrieves data, performs the calculations, and records the results back to the database; the calculations involve automatically selecting locations for the mobile crane, considering the crane capacity, lifting range and utilization. Lift paths for modules are checked for feasibility based on selected locations, satisfying the site and crane configuration constraints, and crane walking paths are planned if needed. The designed system is tested in an industrial project to validate the effectiveness of the system.

"Abstract -A test survey using the MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic system was flown over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide orebodies in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp, Canada. The results were compared with data from historical systems (INPUT, DIGHEM) used to discover the deposits. The historical data show that the two deposits have comparable conductances. However, the modern MEGATEMII system reveals that the New Insco deposit has a much slower decay than the Iso deposit, and it is, therefore, interpreted to be more conductive. The MEGATEMII anomaly maps provide estimates of the location, depth, dip, and strike of the two deposits, information that was not available from the historical anomaly maps. The signal-to-noise ratio of the MEGATEMII data is greater than the historical data, yielding more sharply defined anomalies. The investigations also included a comparison between 90 Hz and 30 Hz MEGATEMII data. The 90 Hz data were found to be useful for mapping the less conductive parts of the Iso body, whereas the 30 Hz data demonstrated that the New Insco body is more conductive. Analysis of height attenuation data over the Iso body indicates that the body could be seen by the MEGATEMII system if it were buried an additional 230 m deeper (in highly resistive material). On the other hand, the INPUT system would detect the Iso body only if it were buried no deeper than an additional 60 m. Tests with the transmitter turned off showed that, for this flight, the MEGATEMII system noise levels on the processed data are about 300 pT/s. Sommaire - Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, un ensemble de levés d’essais électromagnétiques aéroportés employant le système de MEGATEMII a été effectué au dessus des dépôts d’Iso et de New Insco, Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Les données ont été comparées avec les réponses des systèmes qui ont découvert ces deux dépôts (INPUT et DIGHEM). Les données antérieures montrent que le dépôt d’Iso a une conductance comparable à celle de New Insco. Cependant, les données de MEGATEMII démontrent que le dépôt de New Insco a une haute valeur de la constante de décroissance, ce qui reflète une plus forte conductivité. La carte d’anomalies de MEGATEMII indique la localisation, la profondeur, le pendage et l’orientation des deux dépôts, ce que la carte d’anomalies antérieure ne montrait pas. Le rapport de signal à bruit de MEGATEMII est plus grand que celui des données de INPUT et de DIGHEM; de plus, les pics sont mieux définis. Les tests ont également permis une comparaison entre les fréquences de base de 90 Hz et de 30 Hz. Ghana currently exports its bauxite raw without any value addition. Gradual depletion of high grade bauxite (with high alumina content) and the emergence of low grade bauxite (with high iron oxide content) calls for novel and inexpensive ways to recover alumina from these low grade ores. Bauxite users have indicated their willingness to pay 10% to 50% higher for a corresponding reduction in impurities by a similar amount. This project therefore investigates the carbothermal upgrading of the Ghana Awaso bauxite using waste polypropylene as reductant in a locally designed gas-fired furnace. Composite pellets of low grade bauxite sample (assaying 45% Al2O3) containing pulverised waste polypropylene were formed, oven dried, placed in fireclay crucible and fired for 30 minutes. The magnetic fraction after reduction was separated by a Low Intensity Magnet and weighed. It was observed that up to 97% of the iron oxides (occurring as hematite and goethite) could be separated into the magnetic fraction as magnetite leaving a nonmagnetic fraction with over 98% Al2O3 as opposed to the 45% Al2O3 in the as-received bauxite sample. This research direction provides yet another simple but effective way for simultaneously upgrading low grade bauxite and recycling waste polypropylene, whilst at the same time decreasing the amount of waste material generated as red mud after the Bayer process.

ABSTRACT: Rock bolts are the main form of defence against rock falls in mines. Conditions under-ground are conducive to corrosion. A perception exists about American coal mines that bolt corrosion is not an issue, especially when bolts are fully grouted. This perception is not necessarily accurate due to the formation of micro-cracks as the resin sets and to subsequent rock movement that breaks the resin column’s continuity. Corrosion should be considered when designing rock bolt support in long-term excavations. This paper explores the problem of corrosion, outlines a method to determine the corrosion potential of bolts, and suggests ways to mitigate such effects.

A paper read by J. A. H. Church before the Northern Alberta Branch last February described a method of working thick inclined coal-seams from the dip upwards, with the view to preventing fire risk by using water for the stowage of waste workings, and extinguishing a conflagration should such break out, was favorably received; but there was some doubt as to the cost of such a method, as it involves a retreating system, which might prove too expensive for practical adoption. Let us consider a typical leasehold such as we are familiar with in the Rocky Mountains. The leasehold is crossed at one end by a mountain river, which is cut by the outcrop of a seam of coal, 30 feet in thickness, pitching as shown on the drawing herewith, which also shows the general line of the outcrop in elevation through the leasehold, which is two and a half miles long and contains 1,500 acres. The average lift is about 600 feet above river level and drilling has proved that the coalseam can be tapped at a depth of 1,500 feet, 2,000 feet down the pitch from the outcrop in the river, all as shown in the illustration, which is typical enough of our mountain conditions to serve the purposes of comparison of methods. We take up the leasehold and invest $30,000 to pay for drilling and prospecting; $30,000 more for the price of the lease to locator or holder, and say $100,000 to pay for a railway spur (it might cost twice this sum, but we are only comparing two methods in the same location) and "now we are ready to consider equipment and the cost of development.

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of non-ferrous metals. In recent years, significant progress has been made in research and commercial application of pressure leaching technology to produce some nonferrous metals. Research and development activities include a low-pressure, low-temperature leaching technology for complex copper concentrates, a hematite process to treat pressure leach solutions from zinc concentrates, and a pressure leaching - solvent extraction process for molybdenum and rhenium. Examples of commercial practices include a two-stage pressure leach technology in a zinc plant in Danxia, a direct leaching technology in a zinc plant in Zhuzhou, a high pressure acid leaching process for a nickel laterite project in RAMU, and a pressure leaching technology to treat arsenic sulfides in a plant in Guixi. The development of pressure leaching technology for the recovery of lead, vanadium, gallium, germanium, and precious metals in China will also be described in this paper.

"Fluorspar mining in the St. Lawrence area of Newfoundland and Labrador began in the 1930s and ended in the mid-1980s. In 2013, Canada Fluorspar (NL) Inc (CFI) discovered a new ore body, the AGS vein, which proved amenable to more economic open pit mining methods and began developing this resource. This paper discusses the flowsheet development of the AGS vein deposit. Testing at SGS began in 2009 with samples from other deposits in the area. The testwork included pilot-scale dense medium separation (DMS), laboratory-scale flotation tests to develop the flowsheet and a flotation pilot plant. The more recent work that is presented here has been devoted to the AGS vein, and included a variability testing program that gave tremendous insight into the metallurgical drivers of processing the deposit. The ore was found to be fairly variable in terms of fluorite grade, but also gangue mineralogy, which had greater implications on the DMS performance. The gangue mineralogy was also found to significantly impact the grindability characteristics of the DMS product. This paper will detail the testing conducted and the mitigating steps which were identified for the operation.INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the industrial trade name for the mineral fluorite (CaF2), which is the primary industrial source of fluoride. There are a number of categories of fluorspar, most notably acid-grade fluorspar and metallurgical fluorspar (metspar). Acid-grade fluorspar has stringent specifications and is suitable for the production of hydrofluoric acid that is used for many applications. The typical specifications of acid-grade fluorspar are >97% CaF2 and less than 1% each of SiO2 and CaCO3, with a particle size distribution in the order of 80% passing 100 µm. Metspar is typically used for metallurgical purposes, typically as a flux in smelting, and has significantly more relaxed specifications (< 15% SiO2). The principle source of fluorspar in Canada has been from the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador. More than 3 million tonnes of fluorspar were produced there between 1940 and 1978 and from 1987 to 1990, when production ceased (Fulton & Montgomery, 1994)."

La pyrométallurgie du cuivre est essentiellement une chaîne de trois étapes successives d’oxydation préférentielle du fer et du soufre et des impuretés moins nobles que le cuivre qui sont contenues dans le concentré de cuivre issu de l’usine de concentration du minerai, aussi appelée concentrateur. La Figure 1 illustre la chaîne complète d’élaboration du cuivre depuis la mine jusqu’au cuivre pur. La voie hydrométallurgique traite le concentré par lixiviation, c.à.d. par dissolution en phase aqueuse à température typiquement inférieure à 100 ou 150⁰C, alors que la voie pyrométallurgique traite le concentré par fusion à température de l’ordre de 1200 à 1300⁰C.

Mining operators are faced with complex information delivered by technology-centric rather than user-centric systems. The ability to achieve high situation awareness (SA) in the face of this data overload is a key challenge for effective decision making and information exploitation. Incidents that result in loss of revenue and even life, and compromise safety that are attributed to human error are often the result of system designs that overload human cognitive capabilities. This paper focuses on defining SA as it relates to mining operations and presents methods for improving SA through a scientific approach for electric shovel operator user interface development.

The elements of this approach include clearly defined objectives, technical considerations and personnel policies, all of which are equally important. The goal is a significant discovery before the mid-1990s and the company is confident that this target will be achieved.

Evolution over decades and progress over last five years have been made in many topics of interests to rock mechanics, geosciences, physics, and multi-disciplinary interactions in underground research laboratories and development facilities, as well as in underground energy recoveries and environmental assessments. Rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering advances are associated with quantifications of disturbed/damaged zones and rock alternation and bursting processes and creation of underground spaces and accesses associated with deepening of shafts and lengthening of tunnels. Geophysics and earth sciences advances are associated with continuing collections of seismic, electromagnetic, and gravitational data and conducting various thermal, hydrological, mechanical, chemical, and biological investigations, both separately, simultaneously, and in different coupled ways. Astroparticle and underground physics advances are associated with many long term experiments to detect rare events and needs for increasing larger and deeper halls to accommodate next generation detectors, shielings, and isolations. There are also increasing interesting in underground settings to explore multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary sciences and technologies. Energy and environmental sciences and assessments have evolved from traditional oil and gas focuses to recent activities associated with green resources and alternative recovery/disposal strategies. The evolution and progress of these interdependent and related fields are discussed in this quadrennial Congress.

This paper explores the savings that can be achieved in the energy consumption of belt conveyors used in mines by changing the conveyor components, the operational parameters of the system or the belt properties. First the concept of energy savings is introduced by looking at the energy consumption of belt conveyors from a theoretical point of view. Also methods for the calculation of the power consumption of a belt conveyor and the associated emissions are presented. Two case studies are presented in which the effects of the change of the operational parameters of the system, in this case the belt speed, and the belt properties, in this case the application of aramid products in the belt, are presented.

"Airborne electromagnetic surveys were flown during 1965 in the Moose River area of Ontario. The systems used were INPUT Mark II and the Canadian Aero Otter. Anomalies indicated by both systems were located on the ground with vertical-loop EM. Two such anomalies were drilled, with no explanation being found in the bedrock geology. Subsequent seismic, resistivity and gravity surveys indicated that the sources of these anomalies lay in the overburden. Current work in the similar geological environment of the Winisk River area has shown that comparable AEM anomalies can still be misleading. The lesson to be, learned from these experiences is that additional geophysical work can help to resolve doubtful cases before drilling decisions are made."

"Abstract-The ""Brunswick Horizon"" an informally named ore-bearing unit near the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation in the Ordovician Tetagouche Group, hosts the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 base-metal mines, as well as the former Austin Brook iron mine, in northern New Brunswick. Detailed structural analysis of the No. 6 and No.12 mines led to the prediction that a massive­ sulfide deposit may have been repeated by F1 folding along the Brunswick Horizon. A subsequent drilling program discovered the new massive-sulfide North End Zone at a vertical depth of 1100 m, 1 km north of the No. 12 underground workings. By the end of 1990, Zn-Pb-rich massive sulfides had been delineated over a strike length of 200 m and a down-dip extent of 170 m. Rock units intersected in the North End Zone are generally thinner and vary somewhat from those at the Brunswick No. 12 mine. Thinning of the hanging wall rocks may be primary, may result from attenuation along F2 folds, or may represent truncation by a thrust fault. The newly discovered sulfide zone indicates that significant potential exists for the discovery of other deposits at previously unexplored depths.SOMMAIRE-Dans le nord-est du Nouveau-Brunswick ""l&apos;horizon Brunswick"" est le nom usuel de la zone qui contient les mines de métaux de base Brunswick No. 6 et No. 12, ainsi que l&apos;ancienne mine de fer Austin Brook, toutes situées sur le dessus de la Formation ""Nepisiguit Falls"" dans le Groupe Tetagouche d&apos;âge Ordovicien. Les unités de roches intersectées dans le ""North End Zone"" sont généralement plus minces et sont quelque peu différentes de celles de la mine Brunswick No. 12. L&apos;amin­ cissement des roches pourrait être primaire ou être le résultat de l&apos;atténuation le long des plis F2, ou soit tronqué par une faille. La nouvelle découverte d&apos;une zone de sulfures indique un potentiel énorme pour la découverte d&apos;autres g ""tes à ces profondeurs inexplorées."

"For a detailed prognosis of mineral comminution processes, simulation tools like DEM still pose various challenges. Less realistic mineral structures can affect the results of simulation models such as bonded-particle models (BPM). Hence, in order to design mineral processes with these models as tools, representative mineral input data should be used. The article shows, how realistic 2D-structures can be modelled by taking advantage of the parameters identified by the Quantitative Mineralogical Analysis (QMA). Important quantitative parameters can be derived by analyzing three orthogonal thin or polished sections. For this reason point, line, and area analysis are applied. The mentioned parameters precisely describe the texture and structure of minerals. The newly developed software is able for the first time to semi-automatically analyze images of mineral structures using QMA. Moreover, statistically equivalent structures of minerals can be modelled using the QMA- parameters. Generating synthetic, but equivalent mineral structures opens the door for more reliable BPM based simulations. Within future research, the procedure will be adopted to generate 3D-structures. Therefore, QMA-based routines that already have been applied to generate 2D-models shall be utilized as basis. The aim of this procedure is to synthesize realistic microstructures based on certain statistical figures in order to improve comminution simulations.INTRODUCTION Due to its increasing capability, the use of computer technology is permanently intensifying in the design of mineral processes. The recent past has impressively shown that computer models can enhance the understanding of mineral processing. There is in fact a rising number of research activities, which are using simulation approaches to study various aspects of it. Weerasekara et al. (2013) give a comprehensive overview over the application of discrete element modelling (DEM) in the science of comminution.Nonetheless, using simulation tools such as DEM in general still poses a challenge. For a detailed simulation of a mineral comminution process with DEM, bonded particle models (BPM) appeared suitable in the past. The following issues, however, affect an appropriate prediction when modelling with BPM:• Simulations with high numbers of particles may need a lot of time for computation. • Internal modeling parameters like the spring and damper constants in DEM have to be adjusted by comparing its specific crushing behavior in the simulation to reality.• In order to use DEM for prediction of mineral processing, it is essential to validate the correctness of the models and assumptions, which is sometimes difficult. As Weerasekara et al. (2013) have stated it is crucial that the DEM method as well as the DEM code work properly.• It is challenging to implement the complex geometric structures of real minerals into the model."

UNDERGROUND development at the Lynn Lake property of Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, was begun in 1948 with the sinking of the A shaft in the area of the A orebody. By June, 1949, the shaft was completed to a depth of 1,024 feet. Twelve stations were cut, with the bottom level at 992 feet below the collar. Since completion of the shaft, lateral work has been carried out on the 12th level in order to expose the known orebodies and to provide openings from which deeper exploration could be conducted. Dur¬ing the change-over from sinking to lateral work, preliminary diamond drilling was done from the 12th level station to locate the A? ore-body. Later, drilling was carried out from the 5th and 9th level sta-tions, where, also, the outline of the A orebody was established. As the work progressed on the 12th level, and with the commence-ment of drilling below that level, the geological picture was found to be complicated by numerous faults. Instead of operating two drills it became necessary to use at least four. The original plans had provided air sufficient to drive two headings and to operate two diamond drills. The addition of two more air-driven drills resulted in a serious shortage of power.
