The aim with this paper is to discuss experiences from the ongoing research project ‘Attract: A roadmap to attractive, inclusive, and safe mining workplaces’. The project’s aim is to analyse possibilities, effects, and consequences of the green and digital transformation in the Swedish mining industry from workplace, socio-technical and gender equality perspectives. The research project (2022–2025) at Human Work Science at Luleå University of Technology is financed by the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation (a joint venture by the national research funds Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency). The project includes a multidisciplinary research group of five senior researchers and five PhDstudents and a broad repertoire of methods, eg literature reviews, qualitative interviews with both managers and workers, workplace observations, workshops, surveys, and project seminars where the researchers and the company representatives together analyse the results. One important part of the project is the applied approach where the researchers work together with two mining companies and one subcontractor company. The project has two parallel main subprojects.

Mining employees undertaking shift work are at considerable risk of experiencing sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruptions. In the complex, high-risk environment of mining, these sleep and circadian disruptions lead to adverse impacts on employee health, alertness and safety. Evidence-based tools that effectively target improvements in sleep health amongst shift workers are needed. Variability in work hours and individual differences in the response to shift work mean that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution is often insufficient in complex work environments. Currently no interventions provide tailored support for shift workers based on their rosters, personal commitments and sleep habits. Existing technologies, such as smartphone applications and watches, allow sleep monitoring, but their strategies are targeted towards night sleepers, which does not translate to shift work contexts. To address this, our team has developed an innovative digital tool that implements biomathematical models to provide automated, personalised sleep and circadian intervention strategies to optimise sleep, alertness and performance during shift work. The tool uses mathematical models of sleep and alertness regulation that provide physiologically optimal times for an individual to sleep when experiencing circadian disruption. This program of work included co-designed development of a world-first app with shift workers and the examination of the preliminary efficacy of the intervention for improving sleep, alertness and performance.

The concept of the circular economy has been gaining traction both in Europe and China.In Europe the Ellen Macarthur Foundation see their mission as accelerating the transition from a linear take-make-dispose economic model to a circular model that is restorative and regenerative by design, and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. The Chinese Circular Economy initiative is effectively a sustainable consumption and production program utilising cleaner production, industrial ecology and life cycle management approaches to meet the national challenges of maintaining rapid economic growth while simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and maintaining social progress. A key characteristic of both of these circular economy initiatives is to design out, reuse or minimise the generation of waste.The mining sector, by definition, is represented by linear rather than circular activities, by supplying resources to society. However, being one of the world’s largest waste generators, the sector can adopt similar logic to that of the circular economy to improve its sustainability performance. Waste is a critical issue along the whole metals value chain, from mining waste to eventual end-of-life products, such as scrap steel from construction and demolition waste or the growing problem of electronic waste.CITATION:Corder, G and Golev, A, 2016. Thermal and metallurgical coal mining in Queensland has resulted in mines which contain voids due to open cut mining. While there are several proposals for greenfield coalmines or expansions to existing operations, many existing open cut coalmines are reaching maturity and most will leave one or more residual voids in place. The rehabilitation of mine voids is challenging. Water held in voids will evaporate over time leaving solutes to concentrate. This is likely to lead to poor water quality with limited practical use. The most basic practices to rehabilitate voids have historically involved stabilising the high and low walls, bunding to provide flood protection, and preventing public access. Regulatory reforms for mine rehabilitation were introduced in Queensland as part of the Mineral and Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) Act 2018, and aimed to strengthen progressive rehabilitation planning, limit risks to the environment and improve outcomes for local and regional communities. Under the reforms, the goal for rehabilitation of voids is to achieve a safe, stable, and non-polluting landform, which can sustain a post-mining land use (PMLU). The reforms also introduced a requirement to describe rehabilitation of mined land in Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure (PRC) plans, replacing the description of such plans in Environmental Authorities (EAs). The reforms are not retrospective and recognise historic approvals for voids, meaning established voids will remain in the landscape as non-use management areas (NUMAs). Landform evolution models (LEMs) can assess the effectiveness of landform designs applied to a rehabilitated landform by predicting where erosion may occur. Here, we compare erosion predictions produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM with field observations from the rehabilitated Pit 1 landform of the Ranger uranium mine, based in the Northern Territory, Australia (Figure 1). The ability to predict long-term erosion at a catchment scale is important, as the final rehabilitated Ranger landform is required to physically isolate buried tailings material for at least 10 000 years. CAESAR-Lisflood has been extensively tested and calibrated using data collected from erosion plots (0.09 ha) on the Ranger trial landform (TLF) for multiple years (Lowry et al, 2020; Saynor, Lowry and Boyden, 2019). However, until recently, it was impossible to compare model predictions with field observations for areas larger than the TLF erosion plots. We can now compare model predictions of Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 116 gully development with field observations from the newly rehabilitated, 40 ha surface of Pit 1 over two contiguous one-year periods: 2020–2021 and 2021–2022. The aim of this study was to assess whether the CAESAR-Lisflood model can successfully predict gully erosion at a larger spatial scale.

The rate of precipitation of ferric iron as ammonium jarosite, NH4.Fe3(SO4)2(0H)6 from acidic solutions near 100¦C, was found to increase with weight of jarosite seed crystals, and with concentration of ammonium ion, but to decrease with increasing acidity. The particle size of the product crystals was larger at low sulphate concentrations and at high ammonium concentrations. Roller seed screens were installed at The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (B.H.P.) Whyalla pellet plant to replace vibrating screens on the green ball circuits. The installation of roller screens was justified by improving the sizing of the green balls. This improved sizing increased the yield of fired pellets produced from green balls thus decreasing the fuel consumption. The fired pellet sizing was improved also. This paper discusses the configuration of the roller screens installed at Whyalla, quality of green balls produced, advantages of roller screens compared with vibrating screens and future development of roller Screens.

Reclamation field trials commenced in 1985, two years before the granting of the Mining Licence. The level of pasture production on varying soil depths (0 cm, 5 cm, 15 cm and 25 cm) overlying both tailings and oxidised waste overburden was assessed. After seven years, the rate of increase of N, C, P and S, losses of S and P and pH changes were investigated on the plots where grass seed was sown into bare tailings. It was determined that on these plots it would take approximately 24 years to reach the original carbon and nitrogen levels at the mine site.

Dissolved oxygen has been measured directly using a rugged, reliable, accurate electrochemical probe system developed for steelworks application by B.H.P. Central Research Laboratories. Furnace measurements show that the steel is generally supersaturated with oxygen and that oxygen contents vary considerably from heat. to heat. Ladle measurements also show considerable heat-to-heat variations. Analysis in terms of ladle deoxidation chemistry differentiates between carbon monoxide controlled and manganese silicate controlled oxygen levels. Deviations from these levels are sometimes due to aluminium present in other added ladle alloys but in some cases the plant applicability of laboratory derived equilibria is questionable.

Copper concentrate from Bougainville's copper mine located on the west slope of the Crown Prince Range on Bougainville island, is pumped 27 km to the filter and drying plant at Anewa Bay for preparation and storage prior to shipment to overseas customers. Prior to shipment the thickened concentrate slurry is passed through a test loop to check that its consistency and pH are acceptable for transportation through the main pipe line. Fluid bed sulphation roasting followed by leaching at low pH was developed as a means of separating copper and bismuth from a mix- ture of flotation concentrates and flash fur- nace flue dust. A 65 tonne/day plant was established and typically achieves 89 percent copper extraction with negligible bismuth and iron extraction. Acid-chloride leaching of bismuth from copper leach residue was then established, with bismuth oxychloride being precipitated from solution by dilution with water. A small scale batch plant presently in operation typic- ally achieves 80 percent recovery of bismuth to bismuth oxychloride.

In this paper, the authors introduce a new flotation technique, a double collection flotation precess, which succeeds in separating feldspar from quartz effectively in weak acidic medium (pH = 5-6). In the presence of sodium hexametaphosphase(HMP), sodium oleate selectively improves the floatability of feldspar in the first collection step. Dodecyl amine- hydrochloride is used as collector in the second collection step to separate feldspar from quartz. The flotation tests with pure minerals as well as artificial mixture give out satisfactory results. The mechanism of reagent effect was investigated briefly, which is helpful for understanding the Process.

A novel method for determining viable cells of the mineral leaching bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been developed. The cells were collected on 0.45/Lm cellulose acetate filters, washed with artificial minewater, and incubated in the presence of ferrous ion at pH3 in an atmosphere containing radioactive (14C) carbon dioxide. Colonies of bacterial growth were detected by the image formed on X-ray photographic paper (autoradiography). The method was compared with three conventional techniques and shown to detect three orders of magnitude more cells in cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the late exponential phase of growth.

The depletion of easily mined high-grade ore bodies resulted in the industry having to exploit lower grade, complex resources (Albanese and McGagh, 2011; Darling, 2011; Randolph, 2011). The trend is now towards mining and processing of low-grade and complex ores (Darling, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variable geological and mineralogical characteristics, and complex mineralogy and texture can result in large variations in metallurgical response and also cause challenges in processing. (Carson, 1995; Lorenzen and Barnard, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variability and the complex nature of ores are fundamental sources of risk that often cause the greatest economic impact (Dusci et al., 2007; Williams and Richardson, 2004). Hence it is important to effectively characterise these types of ore bodies and assess their processing performance (ie recovery, grade). To enable this, there is a need for the following: (i) characterisation of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical variability in the ore body; (ii) effective selection of drill core with characteristics that represent the range of ores in the entire ore body. The Vancouver Island Highway Project (VIHP) was a $CAD 1.2 billion expenditure by the Province of British Columbia to improve travel safety and relieve traffic congestion between Victoria and Campbell River on Vancouver Island. In the section of highway between the Tsolum River and Oyster River, on the Inland Island Highway portion of the VIHP, over half of the rock to be cut and filled was found to be net acid generating. The Tsolum River has been impacted by metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) for decades from an upstream closed minesite. Geochemical testwork indicated: over half of the rock along this section of highway was potentially net acid generating based on a site-specific SNPR (=NP/SAP) criterion of 1.5; some core samples were already acidic; pyrite occurred in disseminated framboidal and gel forms; the rate of acid generation was not high; measured neutralisation potential (NP) provided some lag time for the onset of net acidity; and non-carbonate neutralising minerals prevented low pH (These predictions led to ML/ARD controls involving: realignment of the highway; elevation control to minimise the volume of disturbed rock; encapsulation of blasted-rock fills within the highway, surrounded by low-permeability till and covered with asphalt; and diversion of water away from cut faces. Internal pipes drained any water reaching the fills into external ditches and ponds, where the water could be monitored and, if necessary, treated. Water from the cuts was also captured in ditches and carried to monitored ponds. Elevated aqueous sulfate concentrations in several ponds confirmed that sulfide minerals were oxidising, but the lack of both acidic pH and increasing trends in concentrations demonstrated that ML/ARD was controlled. Contingency plans for any pond that may become acidic include water treatment, which predictive testwork has shown would not require substantial amounts of limestone or lime.

Modem occupational health practice can be described as the fitting of work to the individual and each individual to his job; perhaps a non-traditional way to view occupational health. This two-component description is achieved through the development of programs to implement and monitor specific job procedures, from the monitoring of unwanted exposures to contaminants to the auditing of mine sites. This paper is about such programs. Some attempt must be made to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and several performance indicators which are intended to measure the effectiveness of such a program are offered.

The crystallisation behaviour of low melting point CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions greatly affect the deformability of inclusions during the rolling process. The crystallisation characteristics of CaO-SiO2- Al2O3-MgO melts representing the oxide inclusions in Si-Mn killed steel were systematically investigated. The effect of Al2O3 and MgO contents on the crystallisation change were analysed under a fixed CaO/SiO2 in the complex inclusions. The continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) experiments were conducted. The results showed that the increase of MgO content increases the crystallisation ability of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO inclusions, while the increase of Al2O3 content has the opposite effect. The viscosity, liquidus temperature of oxide melt and also the initial crystallisation potential might be the reasons for the change in crystallisation behaviour. Also, the crystallisation activation energy could semi-quantitatively characterise the crystal growth during the crystallisation of inclusions. To obtain low melting point plasticized CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO (CaO/SiO2=1) system inclusions, the Al2O3 content of the system needs to be controlled larger than 15 wt per cent and the MgO content should be kept at a small amount.

Roadheader tunnelling machines have been used in Australia by both mining companies and contractors involved in the mining and con- struction industries since the early 1970's. They have both advantages and limitations, and this paper discusses machine excavation from the point of view of a contractor who has both reaped the benefits and suffered the conse- quences of using roadheaders. The paper also includes brief descriptions of three projects tackled by roadheader, all the projects being Declines.

The problem of spontaneous heating/fire is very common in coal mines all over the world. The coal industry faces many problems day by day due to the occurrence of spontaneous heating in the open pit coal mines. Presently, about 70 per cent of total coal production in Indian mines is being carried out by open pit mining. Fire in coal, particularly in open pit mines not only causes irreparable loss of natural wealth but also damages the surface structures and pollutes the environment. It is well known that 75 per cent of the fires occur due to the spontaneous combustion of coal. Spontaneous heating is a very common occurrence in coal mines and is a major factor contributing to mine fire. The liability of coal to spontaneous heating causes many serious problems before, during and after mining. In opencast mines, coal immediately oxidises and catches fire due to the intrinsic characteristics of coal, such as low rank, high moisture, high volatile matter, presence of sulfur in the form of pyrites, low crossing point temperature (CPT) and ignition point temperature (IPT) value and less incubation period. In opencast mines, when the coal benches are left idle for a longer time, heat accumulation takes place in favourable conditions and sometimes leads to fire. The purpose of this paper is to present the different successful case studies regarding the safety management of open pit coal mines from occurrences of spontaneous heating/fire.
