Access to geoscience reference informa- tion including mining and mineral processing has increased considerably in the last five years in Australia. This has been due principally to the use of computer-based information storage and retrieval systems. The main reference data base for the mineral and petroleum industries and disciplines in Australia is the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS), cooperatively developed and coordinated by the Australian Mineral Foundation (AMF). AESIS is created on the CSIRO computing network (CSIRONET) which has a CYBER 76 host computer located at the CSIRO Division of Computing Research (DCR) at Canberra. Data entry was until recently carried out by AMF using a dedicated line through the Adelaide CSIRONET node to the CYBER 76 interactive system. Data entry is now done directly at the AMF on a DEC PDP 11/44 mini computer that is also a host work station on CSIRONET. Data collection via magnetic tape media input from other computer-based systems is under development. The software used for data entry and management of the data base was developed by CSIRO CILES Systems Development Group. For public interactive online use the AESIS data base is transferred by tape to AUSINET - the Australian information net- work run by ACI Computer Services, Melbourne, where the data base is converted to a form suitable for the IBM STAIRS software. CSIRO facilities at DCR Canberra are used to produce computer type-set camera ready products and output in microform, on magnetic tape or as graphic display. The technology applied by lonex Pty Ltd provides an important breakthrough in geochemical exploration, enabling the discovery of concealed mineral deposits to great depths below surface. Most mineral discoveries have been made in areas of outcrop or relatively shallow cover; deposits at greater depth have been beyond the range of conventional geophysical and geochemical methods. Quite apart from the need to explore to greater depths in regions of major current or past production, most continents have vast areas where prospective host rocks are concealed by more recent material. There are numerous case studies where Ionex methods have located deeply-buried metal deposits, up to 500 m below surface, beneath thick younger sedimentary, volcanic, or transported cover. Research leading to the development of this technology was initiated by Dr I S Goldberg at the Rudgeofizika Institute in St Petersburg (CIS), and the methods have been employed there - and in other countries - for many years. Ionex technology became available in Australia in 1993. It comprises: ò geochemical and geoelectrochemical sampling and ultra-high-sensitivity analysis for mobile and weakly-bonded elements (I S Goldberg); ò the delineation and interpretation of regional zones of enrichment and depletion of the prime elements within geoelectrochemical systems (GES) (I S Goldberg); ò the investigation and interpretation of the three-dimensional geochemical zoning within geochemical anomalies (G J Abramson); and ò multi-variate computer modelling of the geochemical fields and systems (V L Los). lonex technology has been adapted to the environmental conditions in Australia with the participation of C 0 Haslam.

Background BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd is one of the major iron ore producers in the Pilbara Region of North Western Australia. The company manages three separate joint ventures; the Newman, Goldsworthy and Yandi joint ventures and two 100 per cent owned operations, Yampi and Jimblebar. The Newman operations constitute a mine site at Newman and a 426 km railroad to Port Hedland where there is an ore processing/port site. The Goldsworthy operations currently constitute a mine site at Shay Gap/Nimingarra, a developing mine site at Yarrie, a decommissioned mine site at Goldsworthy and an ore processing/port site at Finucane Island (Port Hedland). The Yandi operations include mining and processing facilities at site and a spur line to join the Newman Hedland railroad. Jimblebar operations are scree and bedrock mining near Newman and include mining, processing and a spur line to Newman where it joins the Newman-Hedland railroad. The Yampi operations constitute a mine/port site at Koolan Island (which is presently being decommissioned). The combined BHP Iron Ore operations produce approximately 46 Mtpa of iron ore. This paper will concentrate on the processes developed and applied for the decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site. The Goldsworthy site is on the northern boundary of the Pilbara Region and adjacent to the western extremity of the Great Sandy Desert. It is located approximately 110 km east of Port Hedland (see Figure 1). The area is generally of low relief with isolated low ranges. The mine site being within the Mount Goldsworthy range area. The geology of the area is essentially Archaean granite with Archaean banded iron formation becoming dominant within the ranges. The chief soils are hard alkaline red soils. The vegetation is essentially shrub steppe with the main hummock grass species being spinifex (Triodia sp). The climate for the region is semi arid tropical. The temperature ranges from a mean low of 15¦C in winter to a mean high of 40¦ in summer. Rainfall is episodic, occurring mainly throughout the summer as a result of tropical depressions or cyclonic activity. The average annual rainfall is approximately 300 mm and annual evaporation may exceed rainfall by up to 2500 mm. Goldsworthy Mining Ltd commissioned the Goldsworthy site in 1965/66. Goldsworthy was the first iron ore operation and associated town site in the Pilbara region. The mine development peaked in 1977 with the town population reaching 1400 people. In 1982 mining ceased and the mining operations were relocated to Shay Gap, 80 km east of Goldsworthy. The Goldsworthy town continued as the base for the railing operations between Finucane Island and Shay Gap. BHP Minerals acquired Goldsworthy Mining Limited in 1990. The population for the town of Goldsworthy at this stage was around 450 people. The Childe Harold deposit was mined by the Granny Smith Joint Venture (GSJV) from late-March through to early-December 1993. This was a fast-tracked mining project whose history began with an offer to purchase agreement being signed at the end of October 1992. A feasibility study was completed by the end of December 1992 after completion of a reverse circulation (RC) and diamond drilling program. Subsequent additional definition drilling culminated in a remodelling of the reserve by March 1993, by which time all necessary governmental and company approvals had been granted. The crucial aspect of mining Childe Harold quickly was to maintain oxide ore supply to the Granny Smith mill at the maximum possible rate for blending with existing fresh ore stocks. A fully instrumented and bench-mounted diamond drilling machine, purpose designed and built, has been used for investigating the effect of aqueous solutions of various chemical compounds when used as drilling fluids. The rocks investigated were andesite, basalt and granite, the chemical compounds were alkylamines, with various hydrocarbon chain lengths, aluminium chloride and dioxane. Rotation speed seems to be one of the major factors affecting the emergence of mechanochemical effects as the results obtained with aluminium chloride clearly indicate. Penetration rate is either unaf- fected or enhanced by the presence of certain compounds, such as aluminium chloride. On the other hand, penetration rate diminishes when the drilling fluid contains dioxane and exhibits an apparently unpredictable behaviour with alkylamine solutions, although it appears that an increase in hydrocarbon chain length usually equates to an increase in penetration 1. Rock texture seems to have a pronounced effect on test repeatability. With hexadecy- lamine acetate solutions in concentrations ranging from 10-5 to 5 .10-4 molò dm 3 and 41.88 radòs-1 rotation speed, 46 % increments in penetration rate of andesite were observed, with respect to water, whereas penetration rate decreased in basalt by as much as 60¦%o when a dioxane solution was used as drilling fluid. The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.

Black coals occur in most of the major sedimentary basins in Australia. In addition to the better known Permian coal occurrences of the Sydney, Bowen, Oaklands and Galilee Basins, coals of Permian age occur in the Arckaringa Basin in South Australia, the Bonaparte Basin in Northern Territory and the Collie, Perth and Canning Basins in Western Australia and the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania. Coals of Triassic age occur in the Ipswich Callide and Tarong Basins in Queensland, the Tasmania Basin in Tasmania and the Leigh Creek area in South Aus- tralia. Coal bearing rocks of Jurassic age occur in the Mulgildie Basin and Maryborough Basins in Queensland and in both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Clarence Moreton Basin and Surat Basins. They also occur in the Perth Basin in Western Australia. Rocks of Cretaceous age known to contain coal occur in the Styx, Maryborough and Laura Basins in Queensland, the Gippsland Basin in Victoria and both the Queensland and New South Wales portions of the Surat Basin. The coal measures have been deposited in a variety of sedimentary environments and the coals vary widely with regard to thickness, extent, banding characteristics, maceral and ash content. However, they are generally of low rank and most are suitable only for steaming.

This paper describes the methodology developed to establish a sequentia mining plan applied to a coal mine, using computers. Firstly, isocontou. maps were generated from the drill holes and outcrop description information, representing the thickness and depth of the rock formation: present in the mine site. The procedure relies on the repeated application of the cross validation techniques, until the standard deviation of thi estimation is reduced to a minimum.From this map the coal reserves of the two coal seams, the overburdet (separated in hard and soft material) and the interburden were calculated After that, the maps were transferred in digital files to AutoCAI software, where different mining plan simulations were performed. 7b ore evaluation in each case was done automatically, including tonnages volumes and stripping relations. This paper is based on an evaluation project engaged upon jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited nnd" IBM Austra]ia Limited. Mount Isa Mines Limited produces most of its copper from large underground open stopes within massive orebodies. Variations in the position and shapes of these stopes can result in improved metal recovery. An interactive graphics system has been developed to assist the mine design engineer optimise his design. The system can assist the engineer throughout the orebody visualis- ation, initial design and optimisation phases of his design. At any stage the engineer may call upon the display of gridded mesh data, digitized ore outlines or existing stopes or development (drives, cross-cuts). This information may be viewed in plan or any vertical section or in three dimensions with rotation. Tonnage and grade calculations may be quickly performed for initial stope outlines or for modifications to them during the optimisation phase. The system design is highly modular. An array of functions for the manipulation of coordinate and line information may be linked with the development or stope design functions in whichever way the designer desires.

In coal preparation, large dense medium cyclones (DMC) at low pressure heads (typically 9D where D = cyclone diameter) are the norm. This contrasts with high density mineral applications where, largely for historical reasons, smaller cyclones at high heads are the standard. There are advantages in preferring large diameter cyclones at low heads, assuming that metallurgical performance does not suffer significantly. These include simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, reduced medium pumping demands, smaller buildings and overall lower capital and operating costs. In 2008, therefore, Xstrata Zinc decided to trial a single DSM-design 800 mm cyclone in one of its four DMC lines at Mt Isa, replacing the four 400 mm cyclones previously installed. Circumstances allowed a low head of 9.5 D to be trialled, compared with the existing 400 mm head of 21.5 D. This paper describes the trial, including tests using painted ore particles as tracers, estimates of yield and metal recovery, and wear monitoring. The larger unit performed well. There was no evidence that metallurgical performance in terms of metal recovery and waste reject rate suffered, and there was some evidence that it may have improved. Cyclone life increased, and preliminary data suggest that the replacement cost of the 800 mm cyclones is less than half that of the 400 mm units, and this is expected to improve. The plant layout and operability have also improved significantly. Xstrata has therefore decided to convert the whole plant to four low head 800 mm units, replacing the original 16 high head 400 mm units. The paper includes an explanation of the effect of static head on DMC separating force. It also reviews earlier research on diamond applications, and applies a general DMC process model to the Xstrata case, both of which confirm that large, low head cyclones are appropriate in mineral applications, contrary to conventional practice. Such units could significantly reduce both the capital and operating costs of DMC plants in mineral applications.

Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. Mill relining is a major contributor to overall plant downtime. Reducing the number of mill liner pieces removed from and replaced in the mill has a direct impact on the overall reline time and in turn, mill availability. To improve the mill availability of Ridgeway OperationsÆ 32 foot SAG mill, a number of initiatives were implemented in terms of liner design. These included the conversion of the shell from 40 to 30 rows, reducing the number of pieces from 80 to 60 each shell reline and reducing the number of pieces from 48 to 32 per feed end reline. In addition, modifications were made to the discharge end of the mill to extend the life of the outer pulp lifter and discharge cone, thereby reducing the frequency of change out. The standard radial outer pulp lifter was converted to an angled design. The discharge cone was converted to the BullnoseTM design supplied by Bradken. This paper discusses the design changes made and the expected benefits to the Ridgeway Operations in terms of mill availability improvements.

Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. It can be utilised during the early stages of a project as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phases, or alternatively to help understand the various options available in an upgrade or expansion. With the design of a new processing plant to handle a different ore type at Lihir Gold Limited (Lihir), there was concern that the existing conveying system could separately handle the increased tonnages. A simulation model was constructed which allowed Lihir to examine the impact on the conveying system of the new process plant, as well as investigate the effect of different trucking options. As is often the case, once the simulation model was built, further understanding of the downstream bottlenecks was able to be investigated, including the sizing of critical equipment.

The ready availability of powerful desktop workstations, which combine 3D real-time graphics and processing speed better than that of supercomputers of a few years ago, now allows the cost-effective solution of real world geomechanics and underground mining strength simulations. The inclusion of geotechnical factors such as rock joints and porous flow on strength and stability are discussed together with the range of available deformation and failure models for soil, rock and concrete. This paper describes the capabilities provided by finite element graphics and analysis software for modelling and sequential investigation of both excavation and lining, or rock bolting, construction sequences. Examples of the use of finite element models in mining are also included in the paper, together with a discussion of the required people, software and computer hardware resources required to achieve timely and productive results.

The application of reinforcement techniques to enhance the stability of underground coal mine roadways subject to high stresses is discussed. Research conducted in the Illawarra Coal Measures has been aimed to delineate the factors which influence the behaviour of rock above roadways and the performance of the reinforcement placed. Design considerations for the reinforcement of mine roadways in the Bulli coal are based on a quantification of the rock response together with a reinforcement strategy to enhance the structural integrity of the roof strata.

A survey of leaching systems for the dissolution of gold has been undertaken and their advantages and disadvantages evaluated both from their effectiveness at leaching and their compatibility with carbon- in-pulp (CIP) and resin-in-pulp recovery. In the near future it is almost certain that cyanidation in some form will remain the leaching system of.choice although economic and environmental pressures could see the introduction of other leaching systems particularly for treating refractory gold ores. The most likely alternative leaching systems appear to be acid chlorine, acid thiourea and ammoniacal thiosulphate. INTRODUCTION High grade reserves of readily recoverable gold ores are gradually being depleted which, inevitably, must create a greater awareness amongst gold producers, of the efficiency and, in some cases, the suitability of present day metallurgical processes for treating low grade, complex and refractory deposits. One of the key steps in the extraction of gold is the dissolution of the metal using chemical reagents which, ideally, should be cheap or recyclable, selective, non-toxic and compatible with down-stream recovery processes. In practice, meeting all these critera is difficult - if not impossible - particularly in view of the stringent environmental impact requirements which must be met Nowadays.

A combination of high precision 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dating has been used to determine the age of hydrothermal minerals and host rocks in a number of Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) gold deposits in New South Wales, Au4 ralii In particular, this investigation demonstrates that the UAr/ Ar technique of K-Ar dating can be used to determine the timing of mineralization in Palaeozoic systems.A close temporal link between mineralization and Late Ordovician to Early Silurian magmatism is indicated by the dating work. Hydrothermal sericite from the Goonumbla p8rph gy Cu deposit and Glendale Au prospect yieldsAt/ Ar step heating ages between 437.9 ¦ 1.1 and 441.2 ¦ 1.1 Ma (16), and4 minjrnum age of about 425 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of hydrothermal amphibole from the Browns Creek Au-Cu skarn deposit. Hydrothermal aluniI8 frog the Gidginbung epithermal Au deposit yields reset 44 Ar/ Ar ages of 401.0 ¦ 1.3 to 417.3 ¦ 1.3 Ma (16). U-Pb dating by ion microprobe on magmatic zircons from the vicinity of the Goonumbla and Gidginbung deposits gives ages of 438 ¦ 3.5 Ma (2 6), and 435 ¦ 2.5 Ma (2 (7) respectimly, W a minimum age of 435 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of magmatic phases from volcanic rocks adjacent to the Browns Creek skarn deposit. Magmatic episodes near the Sheahan-Grants gold skarnpost give ages of 479.2 ¦ 1.1 and 467.9 ¦ 4o1 by 'Ar/ 9Ar dating of magmatic amphibole. Most Ar/3yAr age spectra show the effects of partial Ar loss at between 360-420 Ma, probably due to heating caused by granitoid emplacement.The radiometric dating work in this paper suggests a restricted metallogenic epoch in the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian LFB, NSW, of similar duration to that found in the Andean margin and the western Pacific island arcs around the Pacific Rini.

Coal is a very versatile resource, having variable characteristics and having potential for a wide variety of mar- kets. Australia has extensive deposits of black coal, although they are concentrated mainly in Eastern Australia. Assessments of the currently known reserves are related to the qualities of these reserves. Markets available to black coal fall into the broad groupings of metallurgical, fuel, conversion and miscellaneous markets and the requirements of these markets are related to coal characteristics. Market trends in Australia and on the export market are discussed and projected forward. By the end of this century Australian consumption of black coal could well be 100 million tonnes per annum, and, in the absence of any export restriction, a similar amount is likely to be exported. Currently defined black coal resources in Australia will last at least 600 years at these projected rates of consumption. Although the position appears satisfactory in considering the projected life of the black coal resources, there is a serious lack of detailed information on reserves, mining and preparation yields, quality and possible environmental restrictions. Action is required on three parallel courses: (1) a consistent, systematic and extensive survey of current coal resources in Australia, (2) accelerated exploration activity to define poorly prospected and potential areas, and (3) regular updating and extension of the knowledge of Australia's coal resources. This information would be of tremendous assistance for the formulation of a national energy policy on coal.

In the last 40 years nuclear energy has taken its place as a major source of electricity worldwide. It now produces 17 per cent of the world's electricity and could conceivably produce a higher proportion, to displace some six billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Concerns about global warming and environmental quality now underline the virtues of nuclear electricity among alternative sources of energy. Global electricity demand is rapidly increasing as a proportion of total energy usage. The proportion has doubled since 1960 and the demand is expected to increase at least 75 per cent between now and 2020. The source of this extra capacity, and the replacement of present capacity, raise questions with major resource and environmental implications. Today nuclear energy is a mature technology. Over 1200 nuclear reactors have been built and operated, some of these have been decommissioned, and among the 440 reactors in commercial operation the first advanced reactors are now entering service. Some 8000 reactor-years of operation have, with the sole exception of Chernobyl, shown nuclear energy to be extremely safe and reliable. High-level wastes are being managed properly and in different parts of the world two strategies are applied to this. Australia has a major role as a long-term supplier of uranium, since it holds almost 30 per cent of the world's reserves. This, along with an impending sellers' market for uranium, is making it an opportune time to develop new mines here. However, after several decades of concern about civil nuclear energy contributing to the arms race, we now have uranium liberated from nuclear weapons stockpiles being diluted for use in civil reactors, which will supplement ex-mine supply. The public acceptability of nuclear energy remains the critical factor in its future and hence in ours.
