The design of mine ventilation systems for the BHP Steel Division Collieries is based on the acquisition of ventilation survey data for the establishment of a realistic computer net- work model. The branches which form the net- work for the computer models are calculated from a range of resistance factors incorporat- ing both a frictional and shock loss component. Since shock losses can account for up to 30 per cent of the total energy losses in mine airways the use of friction factors alone without accounting for shock losses will result in the choosing of an insufficiently performing fan. Published tables of friction factors have in- variably been taken from metalliferous or single entry studies and consequently are not reliable for Australia's mining conditions where multiple entries with regularly spaced cut-throughs are the normal practice. Typical resistance factors for roadways of rectangular cross-section 5.5 m x 2.0 m, with coal sides, have been found to vary from 0.11 Ns2/m8/km where no timber supports are used, to 0.98 Ns2/m8/km where double centre legging together with wooden chocks is used. In addition to the range of resistance factors due to varying support methods, the nature of use for a roadway is very significant because of the condition of repair and upkeep maintained.

Geostatistics is now widely used in the mining industry in the estimation of ore reserves and terms like kriging, variogram and estimation variance are becoming well known. Ordinary Kriging (OK) has been found by some practioners to be a superior tool compared with other ore reserve estimators. However, kriging hasn't been the ultimate solution to difficulties which may arise in ore reserve estimation. Several additional geostatistical techniques have been recently developed for more efficient ore reserve estimation in some deposits, especially gold and other precious metals. These include indicator kriging and probability kriging which are useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

Analyses of several nickel mattes from around the world show a significant variation in their copper content. Typically, matte contains an alloy, heazlewoodite and a copper sulphide phase. The various commercial methods of processing these mattes are reviewed and some of the fundamental factors which determine the choice of leaching system are discussed. Electrochemical studies on pure heazlewoodite and millerite in sulphate and chloride media are compared which show that nickel sulphides react via a series of nickel deficient sulphides and exhibit passivation as nickel is removed. Differences in the electrochemical behaviour of nickel sulphides in chloride media are attributed to greater crystallinity of sulphur and less formation of'NiS2. The electrochemistry of mattes differs because of the presence of alloy and copper. Copper in the matte modifies the potential for alloy dissolution and the rate of anodic dissolution of nickel. At elevated temperatures, Cu(II) in solution exchanges with NiS and completes the leaching of nickel at relatively low potentials without significant oxidation of sulphur to sulphate. It is concluded that there are fundamental advantages to leaching nickel matte in chloride media using Cu(II)/Clz as the oxidant.

PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (PT NMR) is an Indonesian joint venture subsidiary of the Newmont Gold Company of Denver, Colorado, USA. PT Newmont Minahasa Raya operates a 700 000 tonne per annum gold plant in the Minahasa region of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. At full capacity the plant is expected to produce an average of 150 000 to 180 000 ounces of gold per year until the year 2007 based on current existing reserves.Exploration began in 1986 and high grade mineralisation was discovered in 1988. Subsequent drilling defined a resource of approximately 2000 000' ounces. Reserves as of 1 January 1997 were 7 035 000 tonnes grading 8.46 grams per tonne, for 1 913 000 contained ounces. Metallurgical testwork commenced in 1991. Construction of the plant started in late-1994 and the first gold was poured in March 1996.

Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted in a mechanically stirred aeration vessel to determine the rusting abilities of aerated water in the presence of various catalysts compared to the industrially used ammonium chloride. The catalysts used were tartaric acid and citric acid, firstly by themselves, and then in later experiments mixed with ammonium chloride. From these experiments it was found that leaching of iron from reduced ilmenite in the presence of either tartaric acid or its sodium salt was much slower than in the presence of ammonium chloride. Citric acid or its sodium salt also give a slower rate of leaching than the ammonium chloride system, but citric acid and its sodium salt mixed in equal proportions produced a rate of leaching approximately twice as fast as the standard ammonium chloride system. When tartaric acid was mixed with ammonium chloride the leaching rate was found to be equivalent to the leaching rate of the same amount of ammonium chloride alone, thus indicating that tartaric acid made no contribution to the leaching in this svstem_

I am honoured and very pleased to have been given the opportunity this evening to say a few words of thanks not only on behalf of all the guests but especially for the delegates and accompanying persons attending the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Sir Hamilton Whyte,KCMG for his most interesting address. In his far ranging talk, when he showed knowledge of widely diverse subjects, I had a brief fear that he was going to be talking about the details of support methods in deep level mines, or how to avoid flotation problems in multi-metal mines. Although he did not go that far, he touched on subjects which have arisen this week - long term planning and secure supply of minerals at acceptable prices. The dire predictions of the Club of Rome have been debunked with a far more elastic supply of minerals having been proved. Combined with the importance of a falling birthrate in some parts of the world, this will lead to many changes in the future, when hopefully governments will take the long term view rather than look at the next budget or the next election. Maybe some of them are not too lazy to do this for all of us. However as a fellow Ukranian, I feel that he might have been called something different if he had been in Australia. Sir Hamilton, thank you for your talk. Once upon a time - and this is not a fairy story - there was a cobbler who had two sons; one very bright who became a professor of mathematics; the other, dim, who became a millionaire shoemaker. Asked for the secret of his success, the millionaire attributed it to a vital piece of economics which his father had imparted, "Be content with small margins on a large turnover." "So", said the millionaire, "I make my shoes for $2 a pair and sell them for $5. I am very happy with the three per cent profit."

The initial planning and detail design phase leading to the development of a 7.5 m internal shaft to service the deep 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa, Queensland is well advanced. The choice of internal shaft access was made over alternative methods such as a decline from existing levels and borehole hoisting. The resulting access development requirements and shaft configuration for production have been determined. Several techniques are being studied for shaft development. These include the application of blind shaft drilling and large hole reaming methods as well as conventional sinking techniques. As the 3000/3500 Orebodies extend from 1000 metres to more than 1800 metres below the surface, high stress conditions and ground temperatures ranging from 45CC to 62CC are anticipated. The effect of these on the methods being investigated to create a favourable working environment will influence the final choice. Exploration diamond drilling is in progress to confirm the geology of the orebodies so that planning for their extraction including refrigerated ventilation concepts can proceed.

Field investigations recently undertaken by Utah Development Company (U.D.C.) have been developed to allow the assessment of ground conditions relevant to the use of large bucket wheel excavators for pre-stripping overburden. "Bucketwheel diggability" predictions were made on the basis of a wedge test which was perform- -ed in the field on nominal 150 mm diameter drill core samples. Specific separation force (calculated from the wedge test results) for different rock horizons were theoretically related to the excavation rates of various sized bucketwheels, i.e., "bucketwheel diggability". The specific separation force was shown to vary with lithology, structure, weathering and moisture changes. By correlating these features between boreholes, an overall assessment of bucketwheel diggability was then made. The approach adopted to assess bucket- wheel diggability incorporated various levels of investigation. Initially, a reconnaissance stage provided information from widely spaced 150 mm cored holes to compare and contrast areas with differing bucketwheel digging char- -acteristics. The smelting, refining and hydrometallurgical operations practised in the winning of non-ferrous metals are associated with severe aqueous and high temperature corrosion problems.With the increasing costs of maintenenace and the utilization of computerization to control the processes, the trend in recent years has been to spend more capital on improved and proprietory grades of engineering materials, which offer greater reliability and more cost effective plant performance.The problems which have plagued stainless steel users for many years are the alloys' poor performance in chloride or other halide media where pitting, crevice or chloride induced stress corrosion cracking may occur, have been essentially solved by the new proprietory grades. The controlled additions of minor alloying elements including rare earth metals have led to the development of stainless steels with high mechanical strengths, improved corrosion resistance, and high temperature corrosion resistance and structural stability.

Heavy minerals are mined from two fossil strandlines on the southern Swan Coastal Plain. The Capel shoreline, 7 km inland, and the Yoganup shoreline, 15 km inland are arcuate, northwest-facing, and remote from the modern coast. Based on foraminiferal and molluscan assemblages, the shorelines are probably of Pliocene age. The Yoganup shoreline is adjacent to the Whicher Scarp, which is cut into the Leederville Formation (Lower Cretaceous) at the southern boundary of the Swan Coastal Plain. Stratigraphic relations and detailed sedimentology have been studied from temporary exposures in the Yoganup Extended and Yoganup North mines, within a strandline complex at 27 m and 18-33 m above sea level respectively. Heavy minerals were deposited in thin, shallowing-upward sequences along a wave-dominated clastic shoreline cut into pre-Cainozoic sediments. Lithofacies units deposited in eolian, foreshore, shoreface and lagoonal environments are the most significant sites of heavy mineral accumulation. The data collected provide a basis for further exploration.

Lungfish and crayfish inhabit continental ecosystems similar to those of their ancient counterparts in the Permian (lungfish) and Triassic (crayfish) Periods, exhibiting similar burrowing behaviors to live, breed, and escape desiccation. Identification of their burrows in the geologic record when body fossils are absent has relied on the overall gross morphology of the burrows and the process of elimination. A method of burrow identification has been developed by evaluating burrow structures in an attempt to designate architectural and surficial burrow morphologies that uniquely reflect the distinctive burrowing mechanism of a particular organism. The information from this method defines the burrowing signatures of an organism, enabling the differentiation of their burrows even when fossil evidence is lacking.The lungfish constructed simple, vertical burrows with bulbous terminations. The burrow walls exhibit fine, horizontal to sub-horizontal striae and vertical to sub-vertical striae near the top of the bulbous terminus, reflecting a burrowing style similar to modern burrowing lungfish. The crayfish constructed simple, vertical burrows to complex burrows with multiple branching and chamber development. The burrow surface ornamentations exhibit horizontal to sub-horizontal ridges, vertical to sub-vertical groupings of scratches, mud- and lag-liners, knobby and hummocky textures, and body impressions, which reflect the burrowing mechanism of the crayfish.

Worldwide, hard coal mining is being carried out at ever increasing depth, and has, therefore, to cope with correspondingly increasing methane emissions. About seven per cent of global methane emissions are caused by coal mining. Beside carbon dioxide, chloro-fluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrogen oxides, methane is one of the most significant `greenhouse' gases. It is mainly through the release of such trace gases that the greenhouse effect is brought about. Reducing methane emissions is therefore an important problem to be solved by the coal mining industry. This paper begins by highlighting some of the fundamental principles of methane in hard coal mining. The methane problem in German hard coal mining and the industry's efforts to reduce methane emissions are presented. The future development in German hard coal mining is illustrated by an example which shows how large methane volumes can be managed, while still maintaining high outputs at increasing depth.

Benchmarks of mine equipment involved in the excavation process of coal mines would suggest that such equipment is not always operating at an optimum level. Dragline operations and truck/shovel operations rely on efficient use of their plant in order to maintain high mine throughput. The first process which affects the material to be excavated is the drilling and blasting process. Drilling and blasting delivers a fragmented material with a given disposition ready for excavation by mine equipment. As mine operators demand more productivity from their major excavating equipment, many sites are considering the use of productivity monitors to measure their outputs. Some of these productivity improvements will be directly related to the drilling and blasting process, so that as the monitoring systems improve, the opportunities to evaluate all drilling and blasting variables will also improve. This paper reviews current and newer methods for monitoring equipment productivity in mines. These include simple time and motion studies obtained by either manual timing of processes or by automated data collection equipment being adopted by the industry. Case studies for truck/shovel operations are discussed and the productivity improvements are compared with typical industry standards. These improvements relate specifically to parts of the load, haul and dump cycle and the potential for significant improvements are identified. Particular opportunities for drilling and blasting improvements are also presented.

The O.K. deposit occurs within a belt of cherts and spilitised basic volcanics near the western margin of the Hodgkinson Province. The tabular to lenticular shape and gross conformability of the ore bodies; the common occurrence of colloform, framboidal and banded textures in the ores; the lack of significant alteration adjacent to the massive ore horizons and the apparent restriction of stockwork mineralization to the foot-wall side of the massive ore zone at the O.K. mine, all favour a syngenetic origin for the massive sulfide bodies. Furthermore, the micro- structural evidence suggests that the ores have undergone the same deformational history as the country rocks. The invariable association of the ores with spilites; the S isotope values and Co-Ni contents of the pyrites, together with the primitive metal assemblage (Fe, Cu, minor Zn) strongly favour a basic magmatic source for the sulfides. It is suggested-that the sulfides were probably precipitated sub aqueous- ly during a hiatus in volcanic activity. The O.K. deposit is of the cupreous pyrite variety, but unlike other well known occurrences of this type, it does not con- stitute part of an ophiolite complex. Orebodies at Ok Tedi contain a number of different fluorine bearing minerals. Some of these minerals report to concentrate and are responsible for the presence of the penalty element, fluorine, within the concentrate. Previous analytical work has tended to examine geological samples for content, rather than determine the metallurgical behaviour of the different mineralogical species. This investigation utilised X-Ray Diffraction combined with Scanning Electron Microscope / Electron Microprobe to identify the fluorine bearing minerals in flotation test products. Seven fluorine bearing minerals were identified, viz., talc, phlogopite, amphibole (tremolite and actinolite), sphene, apatite, biotite and clay. Talc was found exclusively in the skam ore type. Phlogopite and amphiboles (tremolite and actinolite) were found to occur in both skarn and porphyry ores, while sphene, apatite, biotite and clay were found only in the porphyry ores. Of the fluorine bearing minerals observed, only talc exhibited natural hydrophobicity to any significant degree. Phlogopite and the amphibole minerals were found to be hydrophillic, whilst the remaining minerals occurred in insufficient quantities to determine the flotation behaviour. Ok Tedi copper concentrate fluorine content prior to skarn ore treatment in the mill (typically 350ppm) was previously identified as deriving from phlogopite, while talc was believed to be the source of intermittent high concentrate fluorine contents when skarn ores were treated. This paper provides supporting evidence for this belief, and reports the nature of fluorine bearing mineral flotation behaviour.

Alluvial gold exploration is aimed at recognizing areas of anomalous gold content as evidenced by the nature of the drainage system, its age, geomorphic history and other features of the geological environment including the provenances. Subsequent studies to quantify the findings are governed by the need for accurate data based upon precise measurements. Computerization allows the use of more complicated mathematical procedures than are feasible manually, thus promoting the development of more advanced technological aids. Data banks provide the means of storing vast quantities of information for instant recall.Sample representivity is a major problem and a clear understanding of both sampling and analytical requirements is essential for dealing with problems arising from variations in sample size and particle size distribution. Field samples must always be large enough to ensure adequate representivity or the sampling has failed in its purpose.

Answers to the questions "which rocks contain diamonds?" and "which indicator minerals should diamond explorers look for?" are no longer so easily obtained, now that diamonds are known to occur in lamproites and various types of lamprophyres, as well as their traditional source of kimberlites. One way of isolating those factors (host-rock"geochemistry, geographical or tectonic location, xenolith minerals, etc.) which are most critical in determining the diamond potential of a given pipe, is a detailed and critical re-examination of the huge volumes of accumulated data on kimberlites, lamproites and related rocks. A large analytical database to this end has been set up on an Apple Macintosh II microcomputer using the quasi-relational database management system 4th Dimension. Currently, it contains data for up to 90 major and trace elements, isotopic ratios and contained mineral compositions for some 4,000 rock specimens from all over the world. Many experiences in setting up this database are probably relevant to other geologists setting up their own systems: they include determining the relationships between data items; the advantages of codes over free text in representing categorical variables such as rock types; the need for rigorous error trapping and data validation; and the problem of missing data values and ambiguities thereof. The working system is now being used in a rigorous statistical assessment of the criteria which distinguish diamondiferous from non-diamondiferous rocks.

The Ocean Drilling Program is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (Legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the 19 countries that subscribe to ODP. Australia and Canada share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The Australian Secretariat of the ODP is housed at the Department of Earth Sciences at James Cook University, along with the AUSCAN Consortium office. The Canadian Secretariat is presently based at the University of Toronto. Both secretariats have major research interests in the ore deposits, both ancient and modem, and so there is currently a major drive by the AUSCAN ODP Consortium to make available data and technological information to the minerals industry. This type of information includes data from drilling hydrothermal sites such as the hydrothermally active TAG black smoker complex on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, drilled during Leg 158, and the Middle Valley sulphide deposit, on the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, which was drilled during Leg 139.

There are more than two million square kilometers of carbonate in China.Many water-bearing deposits are distributed in it.According to the karst shapes the surrounding karstic aquifers of mines can be divided into three kinds including solution fissure aquifer,karstic cave aquifer and underground stream (karst stream) aquifer. Underlier invasion is a main feature of karst water-bearing coal mine and upper tier incoming is a main feature of skarn copper and ferro mine.Swatlor pillar and collapse is a special feature of karstic water-impregnated mine.
