In gold processing plants, the water from the cyanidation stages is treated to detoxify cyanide species and this recycle water becomes the main part of the process water. Despite the low concentration of free and weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanides in process water, the recoveries of gold and silver is still affected during flotation, especially when gold and silver are associated with iron sulfide minerals. This is a case at the Hidden Valley (HV) Mine. In this study, the effect of free and WAD cyanides on gold and silver recoveries by flotation from the HV Mine was considered.WAD cyanide (WAD CN) was prepared by mixing sodium cyanide and copper sulfate at a cyanide to copper ratio of 3:1 dosed at different cyanide concentrations. It was found that both free and WAD CN depressed gold and silver and particularly iron sulfides in flotation. The depressed gold and silver recoveries were closely associated with the depressed recovery of iron sulfide minerals, suggesting that free and WAD CN may not depress the flotation of liberated gold and silver minerals significantly. It was also found that 10 ppm free cyanide completely depressed the flotation of iron sulfide minerals and WAD CN depression is probably through the WAD dissociation to free cyanide species (mainly aqueous HCN) during the grinding process, resulting from a decrease in pH. Thermodynamic calculation showed that 5.5 ppm free cyanide was released in the end of grinding at an initial WAD CN concentration of 50 ppm. Spent Pot Lining (SPL) is an unavoidable waste product of the electrolytic process in the smelting of aluminium. SPL is considered to be a hazardous waste in various countries because it contains significant quantities of absorbed fluoride along with traces of cyanide. The disposal of SPL has been primarily in landfill because of difficulties in the development of a successful techno-economic SPL treatment process. Increasing concern about SPL landfilling practices is resulting in regulations in some countries to ban this form of disposal. As a consequence stock piling of SPL is occurring in an increasing number of countries pending the development of a successful treatment process. In 1992 Portland Aluminium investigated a SPL treatment process based on pyrometallurgical technology and approached a company called Ausmelt in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, to ascertain if their submerged lance technology furnace process would be suitable to treat SPL. This approach resulted in Portland Aluminium, Alcoa and Ausmelt personnel working together on trials during 1992 - 1994 in Ausmelt's demonstration furnace to produce a slag and off gases containing hydrogen and sodium fluoride. The trials also evaluated the effect of oxygen enrichment to increase the concentration of hydrogen fluoride and the ability to recycle sodium fluoride particulate produced as the furnace off gases cooled. Other separate developmental work by Portland Aluminium, using CSIRO, resulted in the production of aluminium fluoride from the offgases from the pyrometallurgical process. The results of these projects influenced Portland Aluminium and Alcoa to authorise up to $A26 400 000 in December 1995 to construct a Research and Development processing facility to treat SPL at Portland. The Portland Aluminium unique gas treatment process converts hydrogen fluoride in the furnace offgases to aluminium fluoride in a multistage fluidised bed reactor, designed by Portland Aluminium. The aluminium fluoride produced in the reactor has been trialed successfully in Alcoa's aluminium smelting process as a replacement for imported aluminium fluoride. The installation in mid-2001 of a slag granulation system has enabled the production of a granulated vitreous slag having leachability qualities that conform to Victorian EPA criteria for the unrestricted use of the granulated vitreous slag from 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process'. The unrestricted use of the granulated slag successfully completes 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process' which treats the hazardous waste material SPL and converts it into non hazardous useful products.

The Obuasi Mine has been in operation for the past 100 years. Within this period a host of mining methods have been employed during its various changing phases. The causes for the changes are multiple, ranging from orebody capability, dynamics, technology, safety, economics, production levels, geotechnical, etc. Mining methods applied have also ranged from timber square setts, conventional cut-and-fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel caving, mechanised cut-and-fill, longitudinal and transverse open stoping, and lately longitudinal retreat mining method (LRMM).The Obuasi Mine has a world class underground resource potential of about 27 million ounces. A third of this is in reserve. The orebody is subvertical, with multiple lodes and with widths ranging from 1.5 - 40 m. It stretches along 8.5 km N/S strike. A cursory statistical analysis on the various resource ore widths show a higher percentage (60 per cent) of the resource being within the range of about 1.5 - 10 m. Thus a high proportion of the resource is amenable to narrow vein mining methods. This has enhanced the choice of LRMM as an alternative method. Also, with the increasing cost of mining over time, LRMM, which eliminates expensive and time consuming footwall drives, will become far more advantageous as compared to the transverse/longitudinal open stoping methods which currently constitute about 40 per cent of the total underground production.The LRMM currently delivers about 20 per cent of the Obuasi Mine production. Plans are underway to improve total underground production from the current average of 160 000 tpm to about >180 000 tpm in the next few years and about 20 - 40 per cent more in the foreseeable future. Recoverable ounces will also increase from 26 000 to about 34 000 ounces per month. The proportion of LRMM in the business plan is also expected to increase from the current modest level to about 50 per cent. Despite its tremendous advantages in terms of economics and productivity, the method is facing some challenges during its inception. The relative reactivities of chars prepared from different coal samples at temperatures in the range 500 to 1150¦C were determined by measuring the rates of metallisation of a standard ilmenite concentrate. The results have been interpreted in relation to different measured physical and chemical properties of the chars. Char reactivities were found to correlate with the maximum specific surface area (SSA) of the chars, obtained from plots of SSA versus temperature. Weathering of coal samples gave higher reactivities which correlated with higher SSAs. Experiments using recycled chars showed that the high internal SSAs developed during earlier reduction reactions provide no benefit in terms of increased metallisations. The important role of char hydrogen contents in controlling low temperature metallisation rates was demonstrated. Chars prepared from different rank coals had the same hydrogen content when prepared at the same temperature. Ilmenite metallisation rates had a linear dependence on the hydrogen content of the chars. Large differences in the slopes of the metallisation versus H2 content curves for different chars were interpreted in terms of SSA variations and catalysis of the gas reactions by dispersed metallic iron particles in the chars. A simple test based on magnetic separation of the char was shown to give an indication of enhanced reactivity due to contained metallic iron.

High-Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is one of the efficient methods for increasing the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate for pellet feed production. HPGR grinding mechanism implies that material should compressed between the two rolls, therefore layer of material must be able to resist required pressure for achieving suitable grinding conditions. In this study, by doing SSA increasing tests with pilot HPGR, the effects of silica reduction on SSA increasing results were investigated. For this purpose, HPGR tests were performed on an Iranian magnetite concentrate before and after reverse flotation silica reduction tests. Based on the laboratory test results, silicates have been concentrated in two fraction sizes of the sample comprises coarser than 150 microns in form of quartz and finer than 7 microns in form of iron silicates. These silicates have been effected on reduction of concentrate bed pressure resistance by creating a pasty and sticky mud. In this condition, HPGR cannot work properly and operation results are not acceptable. According to flotation silica reduction tests, with 90 per cent weight recovery, concentrate Fe grade is increased from 67.8 per cent to 69.5 per cent and SiO2 content is reduced from 1.98 per cent to 0.9 per cent and especially for lower than 7 microns fraction size, as a critical fraction, SiO2 content decreased from 4.45 per cent to 2.35 per cent. HPGR tests were performed on 8 per cent moisture in 4 N/mm2 specific force and according to the results after silica reduction HPGR operation conditions are optimised. Results showed that the working gap increased from 7 to 10.5 mm and specific throughput of material raised from 180 ts/hm3 to 250 ts/hm3 , and SSA increased by 300 cm2 /gr in a single pass.

An assessment has been made of six reported methods for the determination of the swelling of iron ore pellets on reduction. The methods are discussed on the basis of apparatus requirements, reduction conditions, sample requirements, measurement of swelling and reproducibility. It is concluded that the CNRM, LKAB, and Lurgi methods are the most satisfactory which presently exist for determination of the swelling of industrially produced, iron ore pellets.

Nordberg has conducted extensive research, during 1982-85, on the effects of cone crusher variables such as speed, throw and cavity design on the productivity of the crushers. Simultaneously, Nordberg's engineers have developed advanced design and testing techniques that ensure efficient and reliable crusher designs. Combination of this knowledge has resulted in a design of the MPI000 (1000 hp) crusher which fits on the existing 7ft Symons foundation and yet is capable of producing twice the ton- nage of the 7ft. In this paper the development of the MP1000 crusher and its performance compared to the 7ft heavy duty and super heavy duty crushers will be discussed. Also, substantial cost savings resulting from the application of such a high performance machine will be presented.

Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

Stope filling practice on the Great Boulder Mine was described in -a paper published in Aus.I.M.M., Proceedings No. 137, in 1945. When the paper was presented the process had emerged from the experimental stage, most of the initial operating difficulties had been overcome, and it had been established that this method of filling was suitable for the working of ore bodies in the Kalgoorlie field: Since 1945, it has fulfilled its early promise, -and during 1947, the tonnage of fill placed was sufficient to cover current operating requirements as called for by the mine ore breaking programme. The object of this paper is to outline current operations. In so doing it will refer' to some ground covered by the previous paper, but will omit details of the initial experimental work. It will include, however, a description of further experimental work on the use of hydraulic filling for worked-out shrinkage stopes, arid will provide more accurate data on costs than were available previously.ESTIMATE OF TONNAGE OF FILL REQUIRED.Early in 1946, the mine ore reserves were analysed in order to estimate the relative tonnages to be mined per four-weekly period by shrinkage stope methods -and by cut and fill stope methods respectively. This analysis was extended beyond the blocks already prepared for stoping, and inclqded the majority of the major ore blocks in the mine ore reserves. The aims of this paper are to present the governing science, verify the performance and demonstrate the potential engineering applications of a computational simulator for in situ leach mining of non-ferrous minerals. Assuming that the target mineral is deposited either uniformly within rock matrixes (matrix-hosted) or on fracture walls (fracture-hosted), in situ leaching can be treated as reactive flow and transport in geological media (porous media for matrix-hosted ore deposits and fractured media for fracture-hosted ore deposits). Under this treatment, the processes of in situ leach mining for non-ferrous minerals can be quantified through several sets of equations and these coupled equations have been numerically solved. The computational simulator has been applied to the simulations of one-, two-, and three-dimensional in situ leaching cases. The computational simulator, together with laboratory and in situ leaching tests, can be used to:optimise the leaching chemistry; optimise the in situ scale mining operations; scale up the in situ scale test operation to a full-scale mining operation; and evaluate the post-mining environmental restoration plan.

In flotation simulation models, the effects of pulp chemistry other than pH are often ignored and reduced to particles hydrophobicity or contact angle, neither of which can be measured readily in real time in an operating plant. The flotation response of a given sulphide mineral is known to be influenced and can be improved by changing the chemical characteristics of the pulp during grinding and flotation. The on-line measurement of pulp pH, potential, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand of a process stream was completed with the PCM® (Pulp Chemistry Monitor) developed by Magotteaux in this study. The data generated together with relevant plant operating parameters were used to construct an empirical model and simulate the metallurgical performance of the ore. The same approach was also applied to laboratory flotation tests data using various grinding media types. Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

Lime-based neutralisation has long been the remediation treatment of choice for acidic mine pit waters. While suited to the attenuation of acidity, lime-based neutralisation may be difficult to implement efficiently due to variation in quality and the partial loss of neutralisation efficiency due to armouring. Large volumes of gypsum-bearing sludge may also require mechanical dewatering and transfer to final voids prior to resumption of in-pit mining or closure. Thus, operational costs may be substantially higher than primary neutralisation alone. Lime production also results in large greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions.Hydrotalcites (HT) are a class of Mg-Al layered double hydroxide minerals with the composition Mg6Al2(CO3 )(OH)16.4H2O. A range of other divalent and trivalent cations may also readily substitute for Mg (eg Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn), Al (eg Fe, La, Ce) and metalloids/oxyanions (SeO42-, AsO43 -/CrO42 -, MnO4-) for CO3 into the hydrotalcite structure. A common feature of acid mine pit waters, often overlooked in assessment of potential remediation options, is the frequent predominance of divalent and trivalent cations as a consequence of partial decomposition of both ore and gangue minerals during in-pit wall rock leaching. Thus, given the presence of substantial divalent and trivalent cations in acidic mine pit waters, an opportunity exists to exploit and in effect work harmoniously with the prevailing pit water composition to form a polymetallic hydrotalcite.The utility of hydrotalcites in the remediation of acidic mine pit waters lies in their ability to incorporate a wide range of contaminants; instantaneous formation, often in a single step; simple post-treatment solute composition; rapid settling; low sludge volume; and the potential to form ore-grade precipitates potentially amendable to reprocessing to (partially) recover remediation costs. WaihiÆs Cornish Pumphouse is located on the edge of town in a dynamic and changeable area where history affects the future. As in any successful project, ingenuity and team work have been significant factors in the planning and implementation of the buildingÆs relocation.   Work around the Pumphouse site commenced circa 1900 with preparation to sink the No 5 shaft. Construction of the pumphouse and the steam driven C pump was completed by 1904 with hints of what was to come evident in 1905 as the No5 Shaft collar had sunk 350mm in four years. By 1907 surface cracking developed over the Milking Cow cave area and in 1913 200 mm was cut off the main pumping rod as the ground was sinking at a rate of 25 mm per year.   In 1913 ground around No 6 shaft had subsided 600 mm.It was also the end of an era as steam gave way to hydroelectricity and electric pumps replaced the C Pump. C Pump was maintained as a backup from 1913 to 1929 and then finally scrapped. 25 years of underground caving operations removed approximately 400 000 cubic metres of ore leaving a 7 ha collapse crater that eventually became known as the mine lake.   On the edge of town a tension zone over the Royal Lode began to develop 50 m diameter chimney collapses as large scale blocks relaxed into unfilled stopes in the old Martha underground mine. After the 1999 collapse part of the main street was closed and after the 2001 collapse Hazard Zones were declared, more streets closed and areas evacuated and retired from residential use.   By 1984 the Pumphouse has approximately one degree of tilt and in 2002 tilt on the Pumphouse accelerated briefly and then settled down. Tilt accelerated again late in 2004 and a scoping study was initiated to define protection options for the pumphouse. The Martha Mining Licence requires Newmont to 'Take whatever precautions are necessary to protect the old Cornish Pumphouse adjacent to No5 shaft' and viable solutions needed to found.   Any work on the Pumphouse comes standard with a wide range of stakeholders, governing agencies and legal framework to consider. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is owner and administrator of the pumphouse.

Mining-induced seismicity at Junction Gold Mine became a serious operational problem in the late-1990s. Assessing the local seismic hazard is an important step in assessing the risk associated with potential rockbursting. This paper discusses the qualitative and quantitative means of assessing seismic hazard used at Junction. In qualitative hazard assessment, the role of the primary factors contributing to mining-induced seismicity and rockbursting are identified. These factors include: rock mass properties, geological structures, mine development, and stoping. A qualitative seismic hazard map has been developed considering these factors. In quantitative hazard assessment, seismic source parameters from an Integrated Seismic System are used to assess seismic hazard. The seismic source parameters found to be relevant to seismic hazard assessment at Junction are discussed.

The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Top End of the Northern Territory lies in the monsoonal zone and receives rain during the November-April period. Initially, at the start of the wet season, rain storms are localised, but, following the descent of the monsoonal trough from below the equator, widespread rain occurs. Overflow incidents at mine sites tend to arise midway through the annual wet season when excess water accumulated in ponds begins to discharge to the external environment. Remote-access monitoring may be undertaken at mine sites using equipment to continuously measure water quality parameters with storage of the information on a data logger. The data is then retrieved by visiting the site and transferring it to a portable computer or by remotely accessing the system using a telemetry system and transmission via telephone, VHF/UHF or satellite. Such systems are readily available and vary in cost depending on the sophistication of the data transfer system. Available sensors for continuous monitoring include those for conductivity, temperature, pH and other ion selective electrodes, eg nitrate, and water level. Of these variables, conductivity is most useful due to its inherent accuracy and stability of reading. Remote monitoring capability is able to provide: (i) more intensive monitoring of key issues; (ii) more timely information; (iii) correct perspective on the degree of environmental problem; and (iv) information from remote locations, which would be difficult to monitor by more conventional methods. Examples are given for applications of continuously logged measurement of conductivity of waters discharging to drains and in creeks at Pine Creek, Ranger, Nabarlek and Woodcutters mines in the Northern Territory. These applications demonstrate the timeliness of the continuous monitoring technique.
