Due to the perceived potential to extract the second economic manganese seam at its Black Rock Operations in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, Assmang commissioned an investigation with respect to mining method and sequencing of the two orebodies in 2007. Based on this initial study into multiseam potential, conditions and impacts, the rock engineering aspect was expanded to determine conceptual rules to govern the extraction of both manganese seams using the normal bord-and-pillar layout implemented at this operation. This work included the theoretical analysis using basic pillar design practices and numerical modelling, including the use of Map3D, UDEC and Phase2 codes.In 2013, Assmang launched a large-scale investigation into the potential to increase mine output from all possible manganese sources at the operation. Included in this investigation was the requirement to confirm or modify the conceptual multiseam extraction rules to implementation. As part of this confirmation process, stress measurements, borehole camera audits and additional numerical modelling were performed at a particular site on the operation where a limited extraction of both seams had been undertaken. In truck-based hauling systems, the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process. As such, underperformance of a haul road will impact immediately on mine productivity and costs. Operations safety, productivity and equipment longevity are all dependent on well-designed, constructed and maintained haul roads. With the advent of autonomous haul trucks, the haul road itself becomes all the more critical to the success of these type of operations; not only in relation to mine operators requirements for safer and more efficient and predictable haulage systems, but also in response to autonomous truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. This paper presents a brief summary of the state-of-the-art in surface mine road design and then proceeds to examine the design and technological challenges associated providing a safe, predictable and affordable road for autonomous mine haul trucks. The paper serves as a basis for evaluating the contributions that enhancements in road design and management can deliver to autonomous mining operations, an initiative that also has scope for adoption within the operating life of many mines, haul roads and haul trucks.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

The mineralogy and extractive metallurgy of platinum and palladium in ores and residues is examined and the relative reactivity of Pt, Pd, PtS and PdS in cyanide and chloride media at 20¦C is discussed. Electrochemical measurements establish that Pd is readily leached in chloride media but more slowly in cyanide media due to a passivating PdO film. The passivating oxide film on Pt prevents leaching in either system at ambient temperatures. The results of leaching Au, Pd and Pt from an iron oxide residue obtained from the Sherritt Gordon Process using CN/air and Cl-/H202 are compared. It appears that passivation is overcome either by roasting at ?600¦ or by leaching at >_100¦C.

The diverse nature of inadvertent mine fires does not lend them to general treatment. But evolving from the unfortunate fires over past years is a simple principle in dealing with all fires to bring combustion under control. Control, in brief, means that the products of combustion, themselves possibly still with fuel values, are not revitalised by addition of fresh air. There are problems with fire- fighting, especially with water, as this may lead to production of CO and H2. Panel ventilation upstream of the fire must be controlled to direct all air over the fire. Some advantages in fire fighting are found by the use of "sails". Early diagnosis of fires and early treatment are essential for safety of personnel and safeguarding and recovery of property. Preparedness extends to up to date documentation, but first hand knowledge also is invaluable to the diverse personnel gathered to fight a fire, and in the decision making Involved.

Politicians and economists talk glibly about the so-called knowledge revolution. The reality is that knowledge is fundamental to economic progress. Consequently there have been many technological revolutions. The global impacts of the invention of the steam engine and the development of the frozen meat industry are well known. Another less publicised technological advance occurred in Central Otago late in the nineteenth century. This was the adaptation of the bucketladder dredge to the mining of placer deposits. A product of over 30 years experimentation and innovation, New Zealand dredging technology was taken to the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco by R H Postlethwaite, a Dunedin based mining engineer. New Zealand-style dredges built by Risdon operated successfully in California, Alaska and the Yukon. Californian engineers assimilated the best features of the New Zealand dredges with American (Bucyrus) designs to produce a standard for the worldwide placer mining industry.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is expected to become one of the main technological instruments for mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions into the earthÆs atmosphere. Besides the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, the implementation of CCS would have various negative consequences, which are û if at all û only poorly covered in the current socio-political discussion. Taking into account all aspects of CCS, the outcome of a comprehensive and conclusive assessment of CCS against the background of the sustainable development concept is uncertain. When assessing the overall impact of CCS in a holistic approach, a variety of aspects with effects on sustainable development are affected. Besides economic issues, various other effects of implementing CCS should be taken into consideration. These include for example additional costs for CCS facilities and processes and a decrease in powerplant efficiency due to high energy requirements of capture processes, and various ecological and societal aspects, such as higher demand for combustible, resulting in faster depletion of reserves and higher land and water use and the provision of jobs along CCS technology chain. This paper presents an approach for a structured sustainability assessment of CCS based on the multi attribute decision-making (MADM) method analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The functioning of the presented methodology is exemplified at the case study of a German coal fired powerplant.

This case study assesses the application of Mine-to-Mill optimisation combined with Whittle Consulting’s Prober<sup>®</sup> economic optimisation for the purpose of economic value uplift in open cut base and precious metal operations. The study extends the application of these optimisation methods to incorporate the recent practice of Ultra High Intensity Blasting (UHIB) developed by Orica Mining Services. The case study deposit known as “Marvin” is a copper/gold porphyry resource that is commonly used in optimisation software training and industry case studies. It has many similarities to Newcrest’s Cadia Hill open pit mine in NSW. Prior desktop research and industrial trials employed static assessments of Mine-to-Mill effects. No prior work other than a Whittle Consulting client study, has sought to assess the impact of variable fragmentation on enterprise economic value. Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operations at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry.Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle ize distributions and brightness values have been prepared.Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the orebody is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins.The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW).The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. The paper provides an overview of the development of the kaolin investment, the nature of the production process and details the project management procedure used for the design, construction and commissioning of the plant. Three areas of significant interest, the gas turbine fired pray dryer, the moving bridge shiploader and the use of aerobelt conveyors on the project are detailed.

Waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are important secondary sources of many valuable materials, including Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) defined by the European Union (EU): lithium, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. Additionally, LIBs typically contain nickel and copper, which are classified as Strategic Raw Materials for EU since 2023. In recent years, great effort has been made to develop efficient recycling processes for waste LIBs. Pyrometallurgical processes have been essential in industrial production of metals for many decades. These technologies are relatively mature, with high adaptability for different raw materials. Pyrometallurgical treatment in LIB recycling typically involves the use of smelting processes, in which waste batteries are heated above their melting points and metals are separated through a reduction reaction in the liquid phase. Through this recycling route, cobalt, copper, and nickel can be efficiently recovered in the form of a metal alloy, whereas lithium and manganese are lost in the slag phase. The goal of this work was to increase the recoveries of valuable battery metals through a combination of hydro- and pyrometallurgical unit operations. First, industrial Li-ion battery scrap underwent a selective sulfation roasting stage, where the aim was to transform LiCoO2 and Mn-oxides into Li, Co and Mn sulfates. After roasting, the battery scrap was leached in distilled water with a solid to liquid ratio of 100 g/L at 60°C and recovered 95 per cent of Li, 61 per cent of Mn and 35 per cent of Co. After leaching, the solid leach residue was mixed with industrial Ni-slag and biochar, followed by reduction at 1350°C in argon atmosphere. The high-temperature smelting experiments were conducted as a function of time (5–60 mins) to investigate the reduction behaviour of battery metals. The results show that Co and Ni from the slag and leach residue can be efficiently recovered in the slag cleaning stage.

The predominant phase in most Marra Mamba, channel iron deposits and detrital iron ore deposits is goethite. Goethite abundant iron ore fines tend to have complex mineralogical associations and fine dissemination of gangue material. These ores are typically challenging to process using conventional beneficiation methods. With declining ore grades, there is a need to develop new processing routes for low-grade goethitic ores/fines.Comparative process amenability studies were carried out using two different processing options to recover iron with low alumina and silica content from a low-grade goethite-abundant iron ore fines (-2 mm) sample from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The first option involved dehydroxylation at 350°C and 400°C, followed by grinding dehydroxylated samples to 100 per cent passing 106 µm and magnetic separation. The second option was processing raw sample by gravity separation using a Floatex density separator. The use of hydrogen as a reducing agent can substantially reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the ironmaking process. Iron ore fines can be reduced in a fluidised bed (FB) using hydrogen (H2) at high temperatures (>800°C), although several studies have reported the sticking of particles which causes the bed to defluidise, effectively shutting down the process. Here, we report results from the reduction of New Zealand (NZ) titanomagnetite (TTM) ironsands in a small-scale laboratory FB (100 g) at temperatures between 800–1000°C using H2 flow rates up to 5 standard L/min. No sticking phenomena are observed under any of these conditions, which is attributed to the formation of a stable titanium-bearing oxide layer on each particle’s exterior, preventing iron-iron contact at the particle surfaces. Pre-oxidised NZ TTM ironsands have also been studied and shown not to stick. Interestingly, at lower reaction temperatures the reduction kinetics for pre-oxidised ironsands is faster than for as-received ironsands. This increased kinetic rate can be attributed to the preoxidation stage inducing micro-fractures that create a void for the hydrogen to diffuse into the inner regions of the particle. In addition, oxidation of TTM appears to segregate the particle into two distinct phases, a high Aluminium-Magnesium (Al-Mg) phase and a high Titanium (Ti) phase. The findings are important as increasing the operating temperature of the FB reactor results in a faster reaction rate and higher gas utilisation, making the process more economically attractive. Furthermore, oxidation of NZ TTM ironsands results in a faster reduction rate at lower temperatures (800°C– 900°C) opening the opportunity to reduce the reaction temperature which might be beneficial in a final commercial-scale process.

Directional hydraulic fracturing was invented by Polish experts and was first applied in coal mining to prevent hard roof rock bursts. Based on its successful application in coal mining, directional hydraulic fracturing has the potential to reorientate the hydraulic fracture trajectory. Recently, this technique has been introduced into cave mining for the purpose of lowering breakdown pressure. The hydraulic fracture is much easier to initiate with the assistance of an initial notch. No systematic theoretical or experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the influencing factors in the hydraulic fracture reorientation process. In this paper, the numerical modelling software Realistic Failure Process Analysis3D (RFPA3D) – Flow Version is used to study the influence of the in situ stress condition and rock mass heterogeneity on directional hydraulic fracturing in brittle heterogeneous rock masses. Firstly, the reliability of RFPA3D in simulating hydraulic fracturing is validated by comparing its results with experimental results and the simulation results from the extended finite element method. The hydraulic fracture trajectory is then observed in a three-dimensional stress environment. The results indicate that for the in situ stress condition, when the borehole lies in the ?2–?3 plane, only the difference between ?2 and ?3 has an important influence on hydraulic fracture reorientation. The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow-level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of δ34 SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë; n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). Vein quartz from the mineralised zone at Waitangi yields δ18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). Fluid inclusion studies indicate a homogenisation temperature range of 190¦ - 296¦C and salinity range of 0.2 - 3.0 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Similar temperature and salinity ranges have been recorded for the other gold deposits in the Coromandel Peninsula. PIXE (Proton Induced X-ray Emission) analysis revealed that the Waitangi ore fluids have 1090 - 2700 ppm K (average 1600), 145 - 205 ppm Ca (average 180), 80 - 100 ppm Mn (average 90), and 80 - 200 ppm Fe (average 120) but no detectable Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Pb and Bi (only one fluid inclusion contains 28 ppm Zn). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source (either directly, or by leaching of igneous sulphides). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1 - 5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in δ18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Mixing of ore fluids with convective ground water is a likely mechanism for gold deposition in a shallow environment for the Waitangi vein system and there is also lack of fluid inclusion evidence (eg liquid-rich and vapour-rich inclusions in the same growth zone) for boiling of ore fluids. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that δ18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

Ion flotation involves the adsorption of ionic species, in association with surfactant molecules, at the surface of rising gas bubbles, for the purpose of recovering and concentrating those ions. The objective of this study was to optimise the ion flotation process using a heap-leach liquor, containing gold cyanide, and the surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The aim was to minimise the surfactant reagent dose, maximise the throughput of feed liquor in the process, and satisfy the dual constraints of a high gold recovery and a high volume reduction factor. Development of a first order model of the ion flotation process formed the theoretical basis for the test program procedure and the interpretation of the results. Batch tests were used in order to determine the ultimate recovery curve for the heap leach liquor-CTAB surfactant system. The results indicated that a surfactant dose of about 0.083 g/l would be necessary in order to achieve a satisfactory gold recovery. Continuous tests were then performed on a small-scale pilot plant at the Newcastle Laboratories. The optimum result achieved was a gold recovery of 85 per cent, a volume reduction factor of ten, and a feed throughput of 2.3 m3/m2-h. Recent work also indicates that very much higher volume reductions can be achieved using a larger diameter vessel. The improvement may be a consequence of a reduction in wall effects and hence an improvement in foam drainage.

The paper covers the history and develop- ment of electrical and diesel-powered hydrau- lic percussion rock drills. It examines main design aspects and problems encountered in pro- ducing an efficient and reliable machine to fully cover the nominal hole sizes required for underground development, production drill- ing and for general quarry work. The main design features and advantages of a hydraulic rock drill are relatively low input power requirement to energy per blow (this being achieved by the use of an electric or diesel- powered hydraulic system) and a specially con- structed piston using a powered damper cylinder to absorb the recoil forces from the drill steel and reduce stresses on the drill, feed and hydraulic boom. A further important design feature is the anti-jamming device which controls the drill both during manual and automatic operation. This anti-jam device works on feed and rotation press and prevents the drill bit becoming jammed in broken or soft ground. These features and many other mechanical and environmental benefits are highlighted when comparing hydraulic percussion rock drills with current pneumatic machines. The hydraulic rock drill gives an overall high penetration and production rate, with an added bonus for ergonomy and environmental conditions such as lower noise level, no fogging from air and oil exhaust (which naturally gives better air for breathing),plus improved vision when in under- ground situations. Hydraulic rock drills and systems have been fully tested in many mines, quarries and contract sites during the past years. They h6! been improved and modified and are now provi~ to be very reliable and economical piece drilling equipment whò in mines and quarries.

A mineralogical analysis has shown that in the Hartebeesfontein ore studied, uranium is associated mainly with uraninite, sulphides such as pyrite and to a lesser degree carbonaceous material such as thucolite. Little could be learned from the literature regarding the mechanism of flotation of these uranium-bearing minerals. A wide variety of reagents were used so that conditions enhancing the flotation of either the sulphides, carbonaceous material, oxides like uraninite, or combinations thereof, were created. As could be expected, the xanthate based floats gave-better selective recovery of sulphides than oleic acid. A substantial fraction of the uranium is associated with pyrite, so that addition of oleic acid to a xanthate float did not enhance the recovery or grade of uranium. After a pre-leach with sulphuric acid in which the pH and Eh were controlled so as to destroy the uraninite, higher uranium recoveries were obtained for the combined float (xanthate, DTP and oleic) and the DTP float. This was most evident when iron was added before flotation. Roasting, which destroyed the sulphides and thucolite, caused a significant decrease in uranium recoveries. The uranium liberated in this way was obviously not flotable in the same way as the uranium liberated from uraninite. A small amount of iron (2 kg/t) added before milling resulted in slightly higher grades and recoveries of sulphur for xanthate based floats. Higher iron additions had a detrimental effect on sulphur recoveries. Even in the case of oleic acid the addition of small amounts of iron had a positive effect on the recovery of sulphur and uranium.

A mining companyÆs approach to managing the risk of theft of explosives and initiating devices should be underpinned by an organisation-wide policy developed with internal and external consultation. It should be based on the principles of sound proactive risk management, planning, monitoring and remedial action. This paper aims to provide mining (and construction)organisations with the rationale and many of the tools they need to control explosive security risks. As with all legislative compliance, they are best managed by incorporating the statutory and legal requirements into company policies, management systems and plans, operating procedures and culture. This is the approach that has been adopted in this paper. Trends we should expect: more prescriptive legislation and stricter government regulations; enhanced enforcement and more prosecution; more sophisticated detection systems, eg airports; additional compliance costs; additional vigilance on record keeping; improved risk awareness and risk communication; wider use of explosives policies, management systems and plans; and additional security staff with investigative skills.It should be noted that mining companies will be required to play their part in reducing the likelihood of explosives, intended for mining purposes, being wrongfully used to threaten, hold to ransom or to injure individuals or members of the public or to produce property damage. This will be done by putting in place safeguards to reduce the risk of theft of explosives while they are under their control. On that basis, this is a business risk assessment rather than a hazard risk assessment. A conclusion of this paper is that mining companies can and should play their part in reducing the supply of explosive materials that can then be used for illegal activities. In fact, mining companies have always had this duty, but now the stakes are higher û æcomplacency no longerÆ.

The existence of Gabal El Kahfa ring complex, located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, has been ascertained from aeromagnetic and aeroradiometric survey data as well as by aerial photography. Two maps for -the net aerial radiometric measurements reduced to ground level and aerial magnetic data corrected for the regional normal gradient of the earth's magnetic field have been constructed. The aeroradioactivity data have been interpreted geologically and analyzed statistically to outline various radiometric units and compute their charac- teristic statistics. The ring complex showed a circular radiometric feature and yielded a radiometric mean background and a standard deviation of 6.48 and 0.89 pR/h respectively. Besides, the observations showed a normal distribution. The aeromagnetic data have been reduced to the north magnetic pole, then filtered to produce the regional-and residual-component maps. Statistical trend analysis was conducted for the tectonic linea- ments resulting from the three magnetic maps, to define the structural framework of the area under study. This statistical study proved the exis- tence of trends in the east-west, northwest-south- east, northeast-southwest and north-south directions. The ring complex is characterized by a circular magnetic feature, whose average relief is 2150 nT. It is included within a high east-west trending magnetic zone. The latter represents a deep-seated uplift or anticline which is bordered from all sides by some faults of different trends.
