The banded iron formations "jasper bars," jaspilites, banded hematite quartzites or banded ironstones, etc., as they have. variously been termed in Western Australia, constitute one of the most striking features of the Pre-Cambrian in this State. They occur in at least two distinct divisions of the Pre-Cambrian, viz., in horizons interbedded with quartzites, shales and thin bedded dolomite in the N~llagine (Proterozoic) Series; and amongst the Older Pre-Cambrian rocks, associated with the metamorphosed sediments of the Jimperding-Chittering Series, the Yilgarn Whitestone Series and the Mosquito Creek Series, and interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments of the Older prenstone or Kalgoorlie Series.In the Hamersley Ranges in the north-west of Western Australia banded ferroginous cherts are well developed amongst the horizontal sediments of Nullagine Age. These iron formations have recently sprung into prominence as they have been found to form the host rocks for important deposits of· blue asbestos. They are closely comparable with the unique crocidolite-bearing banded ironstones of the Cape Province, South Africa, and have been described elsewhere in some detail by the writer. (1) t .The banded iron formations with which it is intended to deal principally in the following pages, form most abundantly in the Central and Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia where they form portions of the Older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie Series of auriferous rocks. In these regions their chemical inertness and physical hardness provide considerable resistance to the agents of erosion and consequently they frequently stand out in strong topographic relief in otherwise monotonously flat or gently rolling country. These banded-iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and in other portions of the State because of thei!! associations with 'gold, iron -and to' a lesser extent, manganese; whilst indirectly because of their peculiar nature, form and topographic prominence, etc, they have been of tremendous assistance to the field geologist both in the practical application of methods of geological mapping and in the' elucidation of geological structures. Finally, they have recently acquired a new importance in the specialised search for ore-bearing lodes or for structural information over areas of soil-covered country, as their form and composition make them ideal subjects for the use of either electrical or m!1-gnetic methods of geophysical prospecting.

An exploratory laboratory work was carried out on microbial leaching of poor non-sulphide nickel ores, not amenable to conventional mineral processing operations. The results have shown that domestic low-grade lateritic ores of limonitic or haematitic type are amenable to bioleaching by fungal strains of Aspergillus sp and Penicillium sp. Maximum nickel and cobalt recoveries achieved were 60 per cent and 50 per cent respectively. Losses of soluble nickel in the fungal biomass were found in the range 3 - 11 per cent. Chemical analysis of the leach liquors showed the presence of significant amounts of citric, oxalic and other organic acids, indicating the role which certain metabolic products of fungal activity may play in the process. Possibilities for future investigations are discussed.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. The problems of using comparatively simple x-ray diffraction equipment for quantitative analysis are examined. Internal standard and direct calibration procedures based upon the measurement of integrated diffraction energy (diffractometer peak area) have been developed for the determination of quartz in Broken Hill dusts. By these methods an accuracy of ± 10 per cent of the true value can be obtained and this can be improved to ±2 1/2 per cent by statistical methods if necessary.Rapid analysis for the components quartz, muscovite, rhodonite, galena, fluorite, sphalerite, calcite, and garnet has been developed by adaptation of direct calibration procedures and use of maximum diffraction energies (diffractometer peak height). Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

Copper mineralization associated with minor molybdenum, silver, and gold occurs in a hydrothermally altered brecda within a granodiorite mass of Upper Permian age. A dyke system of rhyolite, dacite, and andesite forms plug-like bulges near the breccia and probably caused mineralization as a late stage effect.Base metal sulphides occur as disseminations, fracture and cavity fillings in the breccia. A pyritic halo in hydrothermally altered granodiorite surrounds the breccia and grades into unaltered granodiorite. Drilling during 1969 indicated the grade is subeconomic.

In this work, preheating and roasting tests of pellets made from blends of Western Australia ultra-fine (WAU) magnetite concentrate and Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or Brazilian hematite concentrate were carried out. The results showed that pellets made from 100 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate possesses inferior preheating and roasting performance when preheating at 1050°C for 20 minutes and roasting at 1300°C for 40 minutes, the compressive strength of preheated and fired pellets is 502 N/pellet and 2313 N/pellet, respectively. When 40 per cent Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or 20 per cent Brazilian hematite concentrate was blended with 60 per cent or 80 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate, the appropriate preheating temperature of the pellets are reduced from 1050°C to 950°C and 975°C, and also the firing temperature of two types pellets are decreased from 1300°C to 1250°C and 1280°C respectively. Moreover, the compressive strength of fired pellets is obviously improved up to 2746 N/pellet and 2630 N/pellet respectively. Microstructure analysis of the fired pellets made from 100 per cent WAU shows its poor growth of Fe2O3 grains, low interlinkage degree of hematite grains, small size of crystallised grains and high porosity of pellet; however, the fired pellets that blended with domestic magnetite concentrate or with Brazilian hematite concentrate have fully growth of Fe2O3 grains, closer interlinkage of hematite grains, lower porosity and stronger consolidation. IN all wet concentration processes it is of primary importance to determine to what degree the crushing must be carried in order to obtain the maximum profit per ton of ore milled.To effect a clean separation, either by gravity or flotation treatment, between either one valuable sulphide from another, or a sUlphide from the gangue, the ore must have been subjected to grinding to such an extent that the particles to be separated are completely liberated from each other.Insufficient crushing will result in either an incomplete separation of the sulphides from each other, and thus a loss of the one sulphide in the other, or else a loss of the valuable sulphide in the gangue.This being so, the question arises whether the added cost of extra crushing would be economically warranted by the increased recovery consequent on such a step.

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

WHILE in the employ of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters and the Electrolytic Zinc Oompanies at their South Melbourne Research Station, the writer was detailed to investigate the principles underlying the Parkes Process with a view of determining:1. The Interdependence of the variables:(a) Quantity of zinc required per charge,(b) Temperature of stirring of each zincing,(c) Silver content of the bullion after first zinculg,(d) Silver content of the bullion after second zincing,(e) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting, with reference to the method of working the Parkes Process then in operation at Port Pirie.2. The possibility of effecting improvements in the Port Pirie practice of desilverising, especially with respect to:(a) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting.(b) Quantity of zinc required per charge.The method of desilverising in practice at Port Pirie was a two-stage zincing.In both zincings the bullion was cooled to its solidification temperature and the silver crusts which separated from the lead were completely removed.The crusts from the first zincing were retorted, and the crusts from the second zincing were returned to the first zincing of the next charge.

Single particle breakage tests have been used by a number of researchers to investigate some salient features of the complex comminution process. The characteristics of the common single particle breakage tests such as single impact, double impact and slow compression tests are examined and the results from these tests are compared. A comparison of the results from single particle breakage tests with grindability and ball mill tests is given. Application of the results from single particle breakage tests to modelling industrial comminution processes is described. The necessity for further research into single particle breakage tests to develop a simple but comprehensive technique for estimating the breakage characteristics of ores is discussed.

The coalmining industry in most countries has, at various times, suddenly been confronted with a decrease in demand for coal. Readjustments made to reduce productive capacity to match the reduced demand for coal have often resulted in hardship to mineworkers, loss of capital investment to mineowners and loss of coal reserves. The consequences of the methods of readjustment adopted in the past have contributed to the low esteem in which coalmining has come to be regarded by a large section of the gel).eral public in many countries.Four sections of the coalmining industry, representing different periods of time, different countries, and different methods of industrial organisation have been examined:Great Britain and the U.S.A. during the inter war years, the post war European Coal and Steel Community, and post war Great Britain under the National Coal Board. An assessment has been made of the methods adopted in each case to reduce productive capacity to match a reduced demand for coal. Finally the fundamentals of the problem-as it affects the coalmining industry of any country-are considered, and possible solutions put forward.During the 1950's, surplus productive capacity was a problem in many coalmining countries, including Australia and New Zealand. As a rule no techniques are developed beforehand to solve problems introduced by a sudden decrease in demand for coal. The situation is usually tackled by a series of short term decisions based on expediency, which often in the long run only aggravate the problem.

The ore milled from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangal1o-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations. Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14-18% lead; 3·0-4·5 oz. silver per ton, and 9·5-12·0% zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from 6-8% lead, 1·5 oz. silver per ton, 18-25% zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals-ealcite, rhodonite, bustamite-are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce: 1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc conc,entrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufficient granular material to be utilized as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5,000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January, 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of Hgging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. Results obtained from small scale tests using Australian tin concentrates indicate that metallic tin containing less than 0·1 per cent iron can be recovered by a two-stage process using hydrogen and make-up chlorine. In the first stage the concentrate is ground,. pelletized, roasted, and reacted at 650°C with HCI and H2 to volatilize the tin as SnOI2. The volatilization reaction is conducted with cocurrent gas and solids flow because it was found that the use of cocurrent flow yielded a solids residue substantially free from FeCI2. The second stage uses a technique termed "reflux reduction" during which the SnOl2 produced by volatilization is reduced by hydrogen to form tin and a gas containing HCI and H2 of sufficiently high HCI tenor for recycle to the volatilization stage. The elimination of tin ranged from 98+ to 99·7+ per cent of the tin from concentrates containing 5 to 50 per cent tin, respectively. The process should be capable of continuous operation, and a tentative calculation has shown ,that a treatment rate of 12,000 tonnes of tin concentrate per year could be obtained in a volatilization reactor 1·1 m in diameter and 6·1 m high. The process may have particular application to finely divided concentrates containing less than 20 per cent tin.
