There are large tonnages of low-grade manganese ores in India fromwhich it is uneconomic to produce ferroalloys by conventionalsubmerged arc furnace smelting. A possible way to utilise these ores is to smelt them with carbon to produce pig iron and a manganese-rich slag, then to metallothermically reduce the molten slag to silicomanganese. Thermodynamic modelling of the metallothermic reduction stage using aluminium, silicon or aluminium-silicon alloy as the reductant at 1450¦C showed that an acceptable grade of silicomanganese could be produced. Manganese recoveries were predicted to be about 80 per cent. Heat balances indicated that silicothermic reduction may not produce enough heat to maintain reaction temperature. Small-scale laboratory experiments showed that the manganese grade of the alloys, and the manganese recoveries, were close to those predicted, but those for silicon were muchlower. Aluminothermic reduction produced the highest grade manganesealloy. The slag-metal equilibrium involving manganese, silicon and their oxides was investigated and it was found that equilibrium was not attained in any of the experiments, due probably to the very low rate of reactions involving silicon. This could be used to advantage in practice to achieve higher manganese levels in the alloys.

Tunnelling for hydro-electric power projects can be a very challenging component of the overall development. In contrast to urban transportation tunnelling where the logistics for access and supply of power, water and other essentials are readily available, hydropower projects are usually in very remote locations and all necessary plant, equipment, spares and materials need to be brought in and the site must function as a self sufficient unit.For a large scheme the river diversion tunnel(s) are usually on the initial phase critical path in order to meet the non-negotiable deadline of river diversion before the onset of the wet season. A newly formed tunnelling crew, once mobilised to the site for the project, will face the first major learning curve of the project’s systems and logistics during this critical tunnelling activity.Power tunnels convey the water to the turbines in the powerhouse and are usually on the critical path for the main works, especially if the scheme comprises a powerhouse located within an underground cavern. A modern cavern arrangement requires a complex warren of various openings: access adits, ventilation/cable tunnels, shafts, surge tunnels, etc.Hydropower tunnel construction tends to be dominated by tunnel boring machine (TBMs) or drill-and-blast excavation techniques and each has its challenges in very remote locations. TBMs still have long lead times as for any type of project, but additionally require a thorough roads and bridges infrastructure assessment of the country from the port of entry to the site to ensure a problem-free delivery. In some cases the project also requires the establishment of a complete precast concrete segment production facility and the space for creation of laydown areas; there is no ‘just-in-time’ delivery mechanism applicable to typical remote hydropower sites.This paper highlights the technical and risk management considerations in the planning, design and construction of tunnels for hydropower projects. It contrasts the typical factors that govern the design of urban transportation tunnels with those for remote hydropower tunnels. The perspectives of stakeholders are provided including those of international lenders. With examples from large and small scale projects across the globe it provides an insight to all parties and in particular, those tunnellers that are working in the hydropower field for the first time.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

This study data has been collected on a three-month period from November 2020 to January 2021 and based on three different pits: Vindaloo Main, Vindaloo Central and Bouere. Both pits having specific geotechnical and geological properties. Vindaloo Main, VIM, and Central, VIC, have the same mineral composition as volcanic tuff with felsic intrusion or monzodiorite, both rock mass is fractured with small joint. Geotechnically the uniaxial compressive strength UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 110 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.1 to 0.2. Bouere pit is basically made of volcanic tuff stock works as intrusive, UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 103 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.2 to 0.3. The first step of this study was to collect various data from mining operations around the drilling and blasting inputs. This was based around the different scenario of drilling parameters and the outcomes on the blasting, and how they impact load and haul operations and productivities of excavators from the heave to the last flitch. In most cases surface photos of the blast do not represent the overall fragmentation in the blast volume. Photos of the different flitches will not show only the effect of blast, as the loading operation generating more fragmentation by applying weight on the muck pile. Then the record of the different material uses for feeding. The last part of the analysis is the physical data from process plant such as particle size, throughput rate, both for the crusher and the mill, per pit and material and the specific Bond Work index (BWI). Fine particle quantity production is also a key point as is one direct indicator of milling performance. In overall, making link to BWI can influence at each stage of the mining to the processing operation. Drill and blast constitute a high cost in hard rock mining and trying to reduce these costs without an overview of all the integrated processes and context could end up by cost relocating to other activities in the process. However, the cost associated to size reduction builds exponentially as the particle size becomes smaller.

Viscosity of multicomponent slags is one of the crucial physicochemical properties for many industrial processes and technologies. While the viscosity-temperature relationship of completely molten slags can well be described by an Arrhenian-type law, the compositional dependence of viscosity is still not fully understood, especially in compositional regions with the lack of experimental data (eg at the glass-former concentration of 90 molar per cent or higher). In the present work major compositional relationships of the activation energy of viscous flow have been revised for numerous binary and ternary slag systems on the basis of experimental data collected and stored in the viscosity database OxiVis. For example, it has been found that the activation energy relevant to the polymerisation effect in binary systems of the MO-GFO type, where MO is the modifier oxide (ie monovalent K2O, Na2O, Li2O and bivalent CaO, MgO, BaO, MnO, PbO etc) and GFO is the glass-forming oxide (SiO2 or B2O3) is not always proportional to the third power of XGFO (contrary to the Urbain formalism) and can vary significantly dependent on the slag system. Also, the activation energy of the charge compensation effect has been revised for ternary systems of the AO-MO-GFO and AO-MO type, where AO is the amphoteric oxide (Al2O3, Fe2O3 or other). A simple polynomial model has been proposed on the basis of the carried-out analysis for estimation of viscosities of multicomponent slag systems. The model has been optimised against the experimental viscosities in the selected binary, ternary, and higher-order oxide systems and has been shown reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

The Ambuklao hydroelectric dam was originally constructed in the 1950s in the remote and mountainous region of the northern Philippines. Following its construction the dam has suffered heavily due to siltation and a partial collapse of the intake structure due to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the region in 1990. Between the years 1990 and 1999 the power station progressively lost its capacity to generate power. In 1999 the owner took the power station out of commission. The power station remained idle over the next 12 years. In 2008 the power station was sold to a new owner who commissioned the rehabilitation works.The rehabilitation project restored the operating status of the power station in June 2011 and increased its capacity from 75 MW to 105 MW. The civil contract of the rehabilitation project required the construction of a new intake structure behind an in situ rock coffer dam on the edge of the existing reservoir, new 6.2?m diameter × 124?m deep blind sunk shaft behind the intake structure, which connects to a new 6.8?m horseshoe profile headrace tunnel that ultimately connected onto the existing vertical penstocks which feed three No 35 MW Horizontal Turbines rated at 155?m head.The unique challenge in rehabilitating this existing hydropower station involved finding solutions that would conclusively deal with the challenging geological and hydrogeological conditions associated with excavating new tunnels and a drop shaft beneath a live dam.McConnell Dowell was awarded the civil works package for the rehabilitation works in August 2008. The Ambuklao rehabilitation program took 33 months to complete.Over 600?m of tunnels were excavated in highly weathered and often challenging geotechnical conditions via drill and blast with the extensive use of high-pressure fissure grouting to control groundwater ingress that was surcharged by the dam.This paper focuses on the use of high-pressure fissure grouting that took place to enable the excavation of the new waterway system and intake structure.CITATION:Bowskill, A and Harrison, C, 2014. A Loss of Strength of Gold Sulfide Concentrate Before Grinding and Cyanidation Using Magnetic Impulse Treatment Gold recovery from sulfide concentrates is going with cyanidation usually. The fine grinding to 95 per cent -0.020 mm is required for refractory concentrates, in which gold encapsulated by sulfides. According energy consumption is 10 and more kW h/ton. At this paper we suggested to use magnetic-impulse treatment with small energy consumption 0.1-0.2 kW h/ton for loss of sulfide strength before grinding and cyanidation. The object of studies was the gold-pyrite flotation concentrate which was produced from ores at the Kumtor Mine, Kyrgyzstan. The concentrate composition, physic-mechanical properties and loss of strength mechanism were studied there. The tested concentrate assayed, per cent: 62.5 pyrite, 10 feldspar, 10 mica, 5 quarts, 5 carbonates, 4 haematite and another. Haematite has intimate intergrowth with pyrite ? partially with quarts. The magnetic susceptibility of haematite and less pyrite causes in these grains and mineral complex the effect of magneticstriction. As a result numbers of deformations are increased and minerals and gold are also exposed. Lateral and longitudinal strains in the minerals by magneticstriction were calculated in this work. By quantitative analysis of pyrite mono fractions were showed next micro impurities: alumina, arsenic, nickel and others elements. These micro impurities are generated a charged dislocation, cracks and micro cracks. The inter-granular links at a boundary of haematite-pyrite, pyrite-quarts, haematite-quarts have disintegrated. The dislocation is depended from mineral modulus elasticity. It was determined an indicator of mineral electro-mechanic sensitivity which characterises a conversion of electro-magnetic energy to mechanic energy. Pyrite has most dielectric constant and electro-mechanic sensitivity as haematite and quarts. The dislocations in pyrite are account for clacks and a loss of mineral strength. Size analysis of the flotation concentrate after magnetic-impulse treatment is shown the increasing the content of thin fractions by comparison no treated concentrate. Magnetic-impulse treatment has increased the effect of the next fine grinding too. The electronic microscopy has confirmed a loss of strength of gold sulfide concentrate. The gold recovery by cyanidation increased too after preliminary magnetic-impulse treatment of concentrate by laboratory tests. The magnetic-impulse concentrate studies at the Kumtor plant have showed that a recovery gold increase in the processing of cyanidation. The consumption of energy also reduced.

Although the majority of current steel production is supported by iron ore sourced from high-grade haematite deposits, the long-term growing demand for steel has led to higher raw material prices and opened the way for many new magnetite deposits to also be developed. There is a rich and long history of magnetite ore processing in Western countries, including large operations such as Cleveland Cliffs in the USA and LKAB in Sweden, as well as smaller operations like Savage River in Tasmania. The challenge for virtually all magnetite operations is to minimise operating costs, which is dominated by the cost of power required to fine grind the ore in order to achieve acceptable concentrate iron grade together with low impurity content. This remains the case today and will be even more important in the future when a carbon tax is expected to become a significant addition to the operating costs for magnetite deposits. Historically, the lowest operating cost was achieved by multistage fully autogenous grinding with integrated magnetic separation steps between the stages. The major benefit of fully autogenous grinding is the elimination of steel grinding media costs and the need to discriminate between steel and magnetite in coarse magnetic separation. The separation step between grinding stages progressively reduces the amount of material to be ground. Application of more efficient grinding technologies developed in the last 20 years, including high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) for fine crushing and stirred milling for fine grinding, has provided opportunities to further reduce the operating costs associated with comminution. Both technologies are already implemented in some magnetite processing operations, although in limited capacity. The results of a theoretical option study for high capacity processing of a hard, fine-grained silica-rich magnetite ore is presented in this paper, with the emphasis on comminution circuit options. Several circuit options are ranked based on a net present value analysis incorporating an estimate of carbon tax added in the operating cost. The study demonstrates the significant advantages of applying more efficient autogenous grinding technologies.

"The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. With the bell-less top (BLT) charging system replacing the centuries old double bell charging method, the furnace efficiency has been greatly improved together with considerable reduction in the furnace down time and operational problems. But still there are many draw-backs which need further attention to achieve better efficiency and operational effectiveness. The performance and operational problems of the BLTs have been highlighted and possible solutions to overcome some of the major problems are discussed.

State ownership of minerals results in domestic legislation regulating mining operations. The mining industry today is dominated by a number of transnational companies, each subject to internal and external pressures for a more responsible approach to resource management. Thirty to 40 major companies are responsible for the bulk of the worldÆs mineral production with the balance coming from state-owned, second tier and junior companies and from artisanal miners.Mining companies operating within competitive commercial environments formerly focussed on mineral production. Companies worked to standards and expectations then current which largely failed to recognise the impact of mining activities on community interests. The mining industry acquired a reputation for arrogance, and for placing profitability ahead of issues considered equally or more important by local communities. Current perceptions continue to reflect disquiet about industry attitudes towards traditional land-owners and access to their lands, to environmental contamination, handling and storage of waste materials, utilisation of water and electricity, and to rehabilitation of worked out areas. Major international mining companies concerned at continuing criticism sponsored a series of initiatives with the objective of providing guidance on working harmoniously within the community. Industry commissioned studies, performed through the agency of disinterested parties, resulted in May 2002, in a Declaration being issued at an International Conference in Toronto. The Declaration was based on, but did not reflect all of the recommendations of the MMSD Report, æBreaking New GroundÆ.This paper considers whether benefits would result from the negotiation of a legally binding and enforceable international protocol encompassing the objectives of the MMSD report or the Toronto Declaration. It attempts to identify the problems associated with implementing and enforcing international mining law, should it be introduced. Aspects of mining operations having cover under customary international law are reviewed, as are rights, obligations and remedies for breaches of national mining law. Conclusions are drawn based on established procedures relating to implementing international agreements. The continuing ability of mining companies to operate within communities will result from each satisfying the communityÆs expectations rather than by complying with largely unenforceable legislation.

Blast fumes are a significant health risk to underground workers, containing several dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia. To ensure safe working conditions, workers are not normally allowed to re-enter a mine until the gases are cleared. To predict if gases can be cleared efficiently, simulations can be performed to estimate the gas levels following a blast. For accurate modelling, a calibrated airflow simulation is required in addition to blast-specific parameters such as the yield rate (representing the amount of gas released per kg of explosive) and the dispersion factor (representing how quickly the gases can enter the air stream from the explosive site). Those parameters are not easily determined, as they will vary from blast to blast. Many post-blast gas recordings on mine sites were studied and the correct parameters were determined to ensure an accurate gas simulation. The variability of the results was then analysed and correlation to known parameters is suggested. Finally, recommendations on how to determine the correct parameter are presented.

One of the main factors affecting the suitability of an ore for autogenous grinding is the ore’s competency, ie providing enough critical stones for the grinding process. Several experimental test routines exist and are used for assessing the viability of the ore for autogenous grinding. However, very little attention is given to the generation of fatigue in large stones experiencing repeated shocks in the mill. To investigate this, large pebbles sampled from an industrial autogenous grinding mill running hard and soft ores were categorised based on the grinding energy. From the pebbles, small drill core samples were prepared and went through a series of fatigue cycle tests. Both hard and soft ores showed similar average resistance to failure in compression tests, but the hard ore had a consistent resistance with lower variations. The cores were scanned by XCT before and in-between fatigue tests at the highest reachable resolution, 1.5 µm voxel size. The outcome showed that a higher number of micro-cracks were visible in the soft ore compared to the hard ore. The frequency of micro-crack development in the soft ore may be the reason for its lower specific grinding energy compared to the hard ore. It is obvious that for realistic conditions in an autogenous grinding mill, stones are pre-weakened by fatigue before they fracture. Therefore, shortcut methods focusing only on running tests on fresh and small samples may operate in unrealistic conditions by ignoring the fatigue phenomenon. This is even more important for ores that are on the borderline to be considered as competent for autogenous milling.

We offer these notes as a practical contribution. All the arguments we advance have been tested by practical experience.In its preparation we realised that our subject was one of such importance and covered so wide a field that, dealt with by one of us alone, it might easily have been too much for him, so we have endeavoured, by mutual criticism and advice and a pooling of ideas, to bring forward a few points that may be of advantage to members. If any of the paper is of benefit to mining on the "Golden Mile," or elsewhere, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts.It is obvious to all that the longer the machine is working productively per shift the greater the return, to all concerned; the machine-man himself and the company. Furthermore, if a man commences a shift with a definite objective in view; for instance, to bore and fire a specific cut, which he recognizes will give him a good financial return, then that man will exercise all his capabilities to attain that objective.In this paper we hope to demonstrate the value to the machine-man of the knowledge of the capabilities of each hole he bores, so that he will be enabled to utilize his drilling time to the greatest advantage. Also, we hope to show that such drilling time can be advantageously extended.After the war, with the influx of new men to the industry, some education on the finer points of machine work may be desirable, and any instruction in this branch must stress the realization of the value of each hole.We realise that most of those present have a sound workable knowledge of machine-mining, and we are not trying to teach anyone the fundamentals of machine work, but we would like to bring to their attentIon some of the finer points which we believe are very important.The machine-man has control of gear of a capital value of over £150, and the use or misuse of that material has a direct bearing on working costs. Therefore it is imperative that the capital outlay is gainfully employed.A "bogger" in charge of a 5/- shovel engaged unproductively is bad enough. How much worse for £150 worth of gear to be not fully productive.Figs. 1 and 2 demonstrate angles of break, and the full realization of the importance of this angle is essential to our paper. Although these Sketches are two-dimensional, we hope they will be sufficient to demonstrate our meaning. The detection of ethylene in mined-out ‘goaf’ areas of underground coalmines is an industry standard indicator of accelerated oxidation where the coal temperature has exceeded 100°C. If uncontrolled, this naturally occurring process can lead to spontaneous combustion and catastrophic mine explosions, such as the Moura No 2 mine explosion. Spontaneous combustion trigger action response plans (TARPs) typically use the detection of ethylene as a trigger for definite change requiring immediate reaction, which can include the withdrawal of coalmine workers.Following the completion of sealing of longwall goaves at Crinum North Mine, ethylene was often detected in trace quantities. These trace quantities were below 1 ppm and detected via the bag sampling regime, with the use of a gas chromatograph. Any ethylene detected in these instances was not associated with increased quantities of carbon monoxide to conclusively indicate a heating within the sealed area.Ethylene was only detected in a newly sealed goaf and would not remain present for a period following the sealing. As part of the longwall recovery process, the predominant roof support mechanism during the recovery was the use of timber cribs. It was decided to investigate the possibility of this timber generating ethylene.Preliminary tests were completed by placing timber specimens from several species of Australian native hardwoods in gas bags in air. The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has contributed significantly to chemometrics by allowing data analysts to become more aware of total measurement uncertainty as total sampling error + total analytical error. This has allowed a new view on, for example, validation of multivariate data models and their performance. This keynote focuses mostly on the reverse perspective: how can chemometric multivariate data modelling be of help in an augmented sampling context? The basic principles of multivariate data analysis are presented and application examples are outlined from several areas in the geosciences to facilitate answers to the question posed, including a geochemical multivariate anomaly concept defined by a multivariate background model. Applications from geochemical prospecting, geochemical mapping, environmental chemistry and anthropogenic outlier recognition are outlined, as are the interdependent relationships between geostatistical modelling (variographics) of singular variables versus linear combinations of a multitude of variables, in chemometrics called scores. The increased cost of imported oil fuels, coupled with our understandable reluctance to commit ourselves to the use of nuclear energy, has resulted in a renewed reliance on coal as a primary source of energy. New Zealand is fortunate in being fairly well endowed in its coal resources, but their exploitation until now, has been on a relatively small scale. Future exploitation, whether from underground or open cast mines, must be on a very much larger scale. The practice of recording blasts for quality control purposes has been conducted for several decades. However, at the low frame rates of a standard video camera, essential data is frequently missed as it occurs when the shutter is closed between frames.The use of high-speed video for the research, development and monitoring of the performance of blasting procedures is a well proven but under-utilised practice.The recent development of low cost, easy to use high-speed digital cameras and user friendly software can deliver a capability into mine management as a day-to-day production tool that can greatly improve blasting performance and reduce costs.Digital high-speed video and image analysis software can accurately quantify each blast. Analysis of the images can facilitate the identification of causes of variance from design, geology changes, errors in blast practice and areas of poor performance. The use of high-speed video greatly enhances the audit and review processes so that future blast design can be quickly and appropriately modified to deliver improved blasting performance and reduced costs.The three videos demonstrate the differences between standard video and high-speed video and the detail that can be obtained from them. These videos of open cut blasts can be used to identify blast performance variances. Capturing images at 1000 frames per second allows the analysis on a millisecond timescale where detonator timings, fragmentation, venting, fume generation and flyrock can be accurately identified.CITATION:Adermann, D, Chalmers, D, Martin, C and Wellink, S, 2015.
