The demand for gallium has increased significantly over the last few decades due to the expanding use of Ga compounds in the electronics industry. Because it is widely dispersed and rarely found naturally in concentrations greater than 0.1%, Ga is expensive (approximately US$500/kg) and difficult to produce in large quantities.   A previous study of metals in geothermal systems reported significant quantities of Ga present in the muds on the northeast margin of Lake Rotokawa, an acidic lake associated with a high-temperature geothermal field situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Similar muds are present in many other geothermal fields in the zone, suggesting that geothermal muds could be a commercial source ofGa.

Blasting operations play a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines. The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated subsystems, ie loading, transport, crushing and milling operations. Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity is a challenging job for the practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole, effect of varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic. This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at two mines in India. Both the mines use draglines and shovel-dumper combination for removal of overburden. Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation, the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative, which results in a very subjective assessment of blasting performance. Such an approach is a very poor substitute for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance. Forty-seven blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns and their impact on the rock fragmentation are documented. A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts. The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

Farming on bauxite residue using screw propelled equipment (SPE) has been commonly practised to accelerate dewatering and as it promotes consolidation and enhances storage capacity. However, it is unclear when and how often farming should be conducted during the transition of bauxite residue from slurry to dry solids and how deep each slurry deposition should be. To address this issue, three desiccation tanks were established in the laboratory to investigate how much farming could enhance the desiccation and consolidation of tailings. The cuboid tanks, of 350 mm in height and 300 mm in width and length and with an opening on the top, were placed on load cells to monitor the water loss during desiccation and were instrumented with moisture and suction sensors designed and developed at the University of Queensland to measure the water content profile of the residue. The bauxite residue, composed of silt-size particles with low plasticity, was hydraulically deposited in the tanks as a slurry at 27% solid content, resulting in 100 mm depth of solid material settling. Evaporation was enhanced by placing two identical electrical fans above the tanks. Two phases were conducted. In the first phase, the two tanks were left untouched for evaluating non farmed conditions and for calibrating sensors, while in the second phase, three tanks were subjected to atemporal farming using purpose-built screw propelled equipment. The experiment was terminated when the residue was completely desiccated. This paper reports on the instrumented tank set-up and the results obtained to date.

For resources projects with healthy net present value (NPV) and low cash flow volatility, conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis will continue to provide the dominant investment decision-making criteria. However, DCF analysis can be biased because it often applies a single risk-adjusted discount rate (RADR) to compare the value of projects with different risk characteristics. Many of the difficulties with DCF modelling arise from analystsÆ inability to determine appropriate risk discounts and to estimate expected spot prices inputs for the commodities produced over the life of the project. Modern asset pricing (MAP) is a very valuable complement to DCF analysis in addressing some of these issues. Most papers dealing with MAP, however, while academically rigorous, tend not to be explicit in terms of practical application of this methodology in routine project evaluation. This paper has the objective of reviewing the MAP methodology and of demystifying its complexity, by providing a simple but realistic step-by-step evaluation of a mining project, comparing its DCF and MAP NPV values. The paper concludes that MAP provides a minimum, risk-adjusted æfloorÆ value, thus representing a valuable complement to any DCF valuation.

The Mt Wright Project is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Underground Development of the current Mt Wright orebody commenced in June 2006 and the first production ore was brought to surface in June 2007. The orebody is a rhyolite pipe containing fine-grained disseminated gold in a granite host rock. Ground conditions tend to be good to excellent throughout development, with some minor deformation experienced when stope-sized excavations are formed. The mine commenced as a sublevel open stoping (SLOS) operation with the intent to utilise development waste to back fill isolated upper level stopes while developing to the bottom of the known orebody. The mine plan intended to commence production with a bottom-up primary/secondary stoping retreat through the main orebody utilising cemented fill. Some challenges were faced during the initial production phase that included:•Ongoing underground diamond drilling and updating of the block model resulted in some issues reconciling the grade control results to the resource model. This was primarily due to the high variability of grade which in turn caused difficulties in accurately identifying areas of low and high-grade.•The cost of establishing and operating a cemented fill plant to achieve the planned extraction sequence of the orebody had increased significantly beyond initial estimations.•Geotechnical conditions such as stress orientations, ground behavior and response to the forming of excavations learned through the mining of the upper level stopes were different to the assumptions made during the initial design.A number of in-house and external reviews of the mining method were completed which has resulted in a revised mining plan. This paper will summarise the challenges faced and the implementation of the mine plan to date.

In this era of rising focus on the social and environmental costs and benefits of mining operations, the valuation methodologies used to assess such impacts become increasingly important. Within an industry dominated by an engineering culture that places emphasis on net present value (NPV) calculations using high discount rates, difficulties often arise when attempting to justify projects with longer-term, harder to quantify benefits. This is particularly so when these benefits fall in the social and environmental domains and involve other stakeholders. In this paper, we summarise the results of a recent literature review on this subject, which focused on the valuation of æBeyond ComplianceÆ initiatives in the mining sector. We discuss a range of approaches including the quantification of hidden internal costs, financial methods of incorporating risk into calculations, the integration of quantitative and qualitative information, and also the valuation of æexternalitiesÆ or costs and benefits borne by others. We then use a series of examples relating to the management of water in the minerals industry to illustrate how some of these approaches could be applied. There are high-level commitments from both individual companies and groups such as the ICMM to incorporate sustainable development criteria into decision-making processes within the industry. We conclude the paper by arguing that, to meet these commitments, there is a need for the industry to adopt a broader range of valuation methodologies than appears to be the case at present.

The mining licence for the Macraes gold mine places emphasis on the progressive rehabilitation of the land to a state compatible with the landscape and environment that existed prior to mining activities taking place. The shallow soils and hostility of the environment dictate that choices of plant species should focus on persistence rather than high productivity, choices that are made easier by observing the vegetation patterns that have developed naturally within the area, by recontouring landforms to integrate with the surrounding countryside and the use of appropriate plants and establishment techniques.

The Goondicum Crater industrial minerals deposit is located about 30 km east of Monto, Central Queensland, Australia. Early exploration programs in the 1990s found alluvial ilmenite along the banks of the Burnett River. This mineralisation was traced upstream to the Goondicum Crater. The Goondicum Crater is a topographic feature centred on a roughly circular 6 km diameter layered gabbro complex. Significant ilmenite, apatite, titano-magnetite and feldspar mineralisation are present in a weathered horizon up to 25 m thick. After several drilling campaigns in the Crater and subsequent feasibility studies, the project was developed by Monto Minerals Ltd, an ASX listed company, in 2007. However, the project never achieved production performance expectations and ran out of commissioning funds. The company subsequently went into voluntary administration in August 2008.In 2009, the RMM Capital group, of Brisbane, took control of Monto Resources Pty Ltd, and renamed the company Belridge Enterprises Pty Ltd (Belridge). Belridge commissioned a redevelopment study aimed at recommencing mining and processing operations. As part of the redevelopment study the authors planned a drilling campaign, managed a quality control program and developed a block model. This paper describes the drilling program, analytical procedures, quality control procedures and the preparation of the block model.The block model for the resource estimate was created using 1 m high blocks, wireframes defining the main material types, and 2.5 m thick horizontal search ellipsoids with a radial pattern. The deposit was ‘flattened’ prior to modelling. To assist with the economic evaluation of the project, each block in the model was assigned a net dollar value based on economic parameters provided by Belridge, including anticipated revenues and costs. This modelling technique allowed for efficient investigation of various scenarios and was used extensively in the development and optimisation of the project’s financial model. At a zero net value per block, comparable to a break-even cut-off grade of four per cent ilmenite equivalent, the Indicated plus Measured resource is estimated at 51 Mt, averaging 4.1 per cent ilmenite, 1.9 per cent apatite and 2.5 per cent titano-magnetite.

Alcoa operates two bauxite mines at Huntly and Willowdale, located within the jarrah forest south-east of Perth in Western Australia. Ore reserves are shallow but extensive, and mining pits averaging around 20 ha in size are distributed across a mining region in a mosaic pattern, linked to a centrally-located crusher by a radiating network of haulroads. A mining or crusher region is defined partly in terms of economic haul distances, and new regions are opened once the current regions’ reserves have been mined. Since commencing in 1973, the Huntly mine has constructed and progressively closed three previous mining regions and is presently in a transition from the fourth and current region of McCoy to the new region of Myara. At present rates of production, approximately 450 ha is cleared, mined and rehabilitated each year.The value of topsoil in returning a diverse mix of native jarrah forest plant species and supplying nutrients, organic matter and soil biota to rehabilitated areas has long been recognised. Managing the topsoil resource is therefore a critical element in the success of rehabilitation outcomes, but the distribution and dynamic nature of mining operations pose significant planning and logistical challenges. The regionalised approach to mining at Huntly also presents a range of issues for what are, in effect, soil management plans for episodic mine closure. The nature of mining and rehabilitation operations are described, together with the planning processes that Alcoa follows to quantify, track and report on soil movement. A case study of the Huntly mine demonstrates that an integrated operational and life-of-mine planning process is essential for successful and cost-effective mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Hackett, L and Grigg, A, 2014. Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

The flotation mechanism plays a key role in the flotation process. It is used to provide the contact between solid particles and bubbles and also the energy for these particles and bubbles to attach. The mechanism must therefore provide sufficient mixing to keep the solids in suspension so that they can be transported into the froth and recovered to the concentrate. The design of the mechanism is critical and over the past decade Outotec has developed and optimised a new mechanism design to improve metallurgical and energy performance. The FloatForce® mechanism consists of a rotor and stator arrangement and has been specifically designed to provide sustained mixing at higher air flows and lower power inputs.Over 500 FloatForce® mechanisms have been installed in existing and new operations. This paper outlines the technological aspects of the FloatForce® mechanism and provides metallurgical, operational and energy performance results from a number of flotation circuits in which these have been installed.

A requisite corollary of mineral sand mining on North Stradbroake Island (Queensland (Qld), Australia) has been the progressive rehabilitation of post-mined lands for the revegetation of native subtropical Eucalypt communities. Since 2005, rigorous environmental monitoring has been undertaken to verify the annual development of post-rehabilitated sites. From these long-term analyses, a chronosequence of land revegetation (ranging from three to 26 years postrehabilitation) was developed to examine the rehabilitation trajectories of various post-mined sites in relation to proximal undisturbed locations. Here, we identified that some sites may be deviating from the intended natural analogues as evidenced by the opportunistic colonisationand otherwise æinvasiveÆ behaviour of a regionally native species (Black Sheoak - Allocasuarina littoralis), which appear to be displacing the intended Eucalypt varieties. Although it is recognised that the broader data trends correspond to distinct periods of adaptive modifications to the implementation of rehabilitation (ie pre- and post-1995), this analysis focuses on further identifying potential above- and belowground feedback mechanisms underlying these divergent ecological outcomes.CITATION:Audet, P, Gravina, A, Glenn, V, McKenna, P, Vickers, H, Gillespie, M J and Mulligan, D R, 2012. The reduction in man's contribution to the Greenhouse effect will only be achieved by a number of small steps. Some steps will absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere in slightly greater quantities, others will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide generated. This paper deals with the reduction of carbon dioxide by improving the combustion efficiency of petroleum fuels. Until recently most reductions in fuel consumption and air pollution have been brought about through mechanical adjustments to combustion equipment. Since the development of tetraethyl lead, little has been done to chemically modify combustion reactions to improve fuel efficiency or reduce emissions. During the past five years Australian laboratory and field trials with ferrous picrate treatment have demonstrated significant and economic gains in the combustion efficiency of diesel fuels. These studies have revealed that even under ideal conditions in diesel engines, carbon monoxide (CO) momentarily saturates the combustion chamber. This state reduces combustion rates, peak pressure and power and increases the risk of pollution. Theoretical, laboratory and field data are presented which support the mechanism by which the ferrous catalyst accelerates the oxidation of CO to the terminal CO2 thus reducing fuel consumption and the undesirable combustion products accompanying the CO saturation of combustion environments. While this paper deals principally with diesel fuels commonly used in mining operations, the catalytic effect of the ferrous ion is also shown to significantly reduce fuel consumption by petrol engines thereby promising a means to reduce the much larger contributions to the Greenhouse gases by automobiles.

The Newmont Tanami Operations (NTO), formerly the Granites Gold Mine, commenced operation in the mid-1980s with tailings deposition evolving over the past three decades as production has increased and the operation has expanded. Paddock-style tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and in-pit tailings deposition have fulfilled the tailings requirements for NTO over its lifetime with the technical specifications of these facilities improving over time in line with the positive development of standards, guidelines and best practice.This paper reviews the options for tailings storage facilities at NTO and the many considerations that have been analysed and deliberated upon before settling on specific TSF types and designs. It also explains the operating philosophies of the tailings deposition and how the facilities have always strongly maintained the optimum capture and retrieval of water. The current TSF design and criteria is presented, along with the introduction of dry tails harvesting for use in paste production as a backfill product for the underground mine. "The mine ventilation system plays an important role in mitigating human exposure to diesel particulate emissions (DPM), exhaust gases and heat in underground mines. The mine’s secondary ventilation systems are critical for diluting contaminants when working at the face of a heading. To improve these systems it is important to understand and visualise the localised air flow profiles. We have considered an approach that includes both tracer gas measurement–modelling to analyse this complex flow behaviour in a heading. The use of tracer gas enables reliable measurements of flow behaviour and differentiation between the contributions of various contaminant sources including DPM. A pilot study was conducted to demonstrate how tracer gas can be used to directly measure the effectiveness of ventilation dilution in a heading during shotcrete activity. This activity is considered to be one of the more challenging areas for diesel exhaust exposure management. Exposure sources include the diesel engine of the spraying equipment (Spraymech) and concrete agitator truck (Agi) that supplies the shotcrete. During operation both the Spraymech and Agi operators are located outside the equipment’s air-conditioned cabins and both are exposed to diesel exhaust. In the pilot study tracer gas was injected directly into the Spraymech exhaust stream. This allowed thorough mixing, ensuring the tracer gas was able to track exhaust gases and particulates released to the heading. The release was repeated at three different headings with varying degrees of secondary ventilation controls. The study showed that small changes to the secondary ventilation system can significantly impact the contaminant concentration. It also demonstrated that tracer gas can be used to isolate different contaminant sources. The intent is to use this technique in a more comprehensive study to develop best practice guidelines for secondary ventilation installations. There is a sense of geometallurgy being new; a new methodology for mining project development and improved operational strategy. One of the main challenges that any ænewÆ technology faces is a validation of the value and the need to produce case studies. However, producing case studies can often be problematic particularly given the long cycle from mineral deposit project, through feasibility and construction to stabilised operation of a mine.However, the roots of geometallurgy go back quite some time. Successful practices with geometallurgy can be seen from as early as the 1980s. Many times those practices were not called geometallurgy but something else and, in other cases, what can be seen are various components of the geometallurgical ævalue chainÆ.This paper will analyse a selection of published past practices from a geometallurgical perspective to demonstrate the value realised from the application of this methodology. The paper will then make some general comments on where this history of work in geometallurgy has lead us to and what are the challenges today for the geometallurgical effort.CITATION:S R Williams, 2013. Traditionally, comminution and flotation have been surveyed, analysed and optimised separately. This often results in less than optimal outcomes because of the complex interactions between the two processes. Flotation recovery is a strong function of the valuable mineral particle size distribution with lower recovery of ultra-fines due to poor flotation kinetics, optimum recovery for the intermediate sized particles and lower recovery for the coarser particles due to poorer liberation. Thus, to optimise flotation recovery and grade it is usually best to grind to a fine size. This requirement needs to be balanced by the cost of grinding finer and the revenue that results from an increase in grinding throughput, which often results in a coarsening of the flotation feed.This paper demonstrates a technique which can be used to predict the effect of a change in feed grind size on flotation performance. It can be used to determine the optimum grind size for a particular operation which optimises total circuit profitability. Analysis is relatively easy to perform, as a minimum, requiring only size by assay data of the feed and product streams of the process. Case studies will be presented that demonstrate the usefulness of this technique in feed grind applications. Potential use of the technique for regrind evaluation is discussed.
