It has been thought in the past that New Zealand had ample coal reserves, able to provide fossil fuel supplies well into the future. Such is not the case and every effort must be made to achieve the highest possible extraction rate in all new coal mining ventures. While the relative cost and availability of completion or fuels has been largely responsible for the slow growth of coal production in the past, a world shortage of fuels has given coal a new importance and required better utilisation of coal reserves. New mining ventures in thick-seam coal deposits cannot be planned and designed without geotechnical investigations designed to provide information required by the mining engineer and analyst. Finite element analysis of mine workings may provide essential information on the optimisation of mining techniques and the design of underground support and roadway shapes.

On the first of October 1991 two significant pieces of legislation came into force. Both of these are relevant to the allocation and use of minerals in New Zealand . They are the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Resource Management Act 1991.   The full legal implications of these is not fully known because the Planning Tribunal and the superior courts have not as yet had to deal with them in any detail. However, the thrust of the legislation is clear and it is appropriate to give an overview of how the statutes will operate in tandem if you are seeking to pursue or oppose any prospect, exploration or mining of Crown Minerals in New Zealand.

In most surface mining operations, overall project economics is driven to a significant extent by the slope angles that can be achieved within the rock masses present. This is particularly true of precious metal pits in which stripping ratios can be relatively high, although examples from other non-precious metal operations (such as large iron ore and copper pits) can also be found. As a consequence, it is not surprising that in most large (deep) open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle (of the order of two or three degrees can translate into changes in project value measured in the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding how this potential value can be realised, and quantifying the associated risks, should be one of the key outcomes of modern slope engineering practice. In striving for optimised slope angles, therefore, mining companies and their specialist consultants are increasingly turning to more sophisticated methods of engineering open pit walls. This paper summarises contemporary slope engineering practice as well as some of the key technical issues that are either currently being researched or will need to be researched in the future. It is written in the context of the slope engineering process; namely, data collection and analysis, failure mode identification and stability assessment, slope design, slope formation, and slope (face) mapping and monitoring (the latter two activities being the primary on-going data collection functions that close the design loop).

The economic success of cave mining projects is significantly influenced by the secondary fragmentation size distribution of the caved orebody and making the fragmented ore available for extraction. If the cave does not propagate as predicted, it may lead to stalled cave growth and/or localised preferential caving. This can cause significant ore loss and the inclusion of excessive waste in draw columns, both of which damage the economic value of the project. Uncontrolled caving can have severe consequences for the safety and economics of mines. Such safety risks include air blasts due to the formation of excessive air gaps and damage to infrastructure due to surface subsidence. Monitoring the cave-back delivers critical feedback that is required to exert control over its propagation and reduce the likelihood of adverse consequences. Current methods for monitoring cave propagation include access through open holes, microseismic monitoring systems, time domain reflectometers and extensometers. All of these monitoring systems rely on stable holes for installation and ongoing data collection. However, cables in holes often get sheared due to ground movement in the seismogenic zone well ahead of the cave front, rendering the systems useless. To resolve this issue, Elexon Mining, with the support of Rio Tinto, developed the Networked Smart Marker system, which is based on Elexon’s Smart Marker technology. This system provides a more robust and versatile alternative to other cave monitoring systems as the data is transmitted wirelessly through rock, and thus is not vulnerable to hole shearing/dislocation experienced with current cave monitoring systems. Installations at the Argyle block cave have proven that the Networked Smart Maker system can continue to provide information on the cave-back’s location long after all conventional monitoring systems have failed. During a mineral exploration program in an environmentally sensitive area nearMount Painter in South Australia, a helicopter was used to position, construct and service drilling rigs in order to avoid the need to create new access tracks. The drilling program was designed to optimise the advantages of natural landforms in order to minimise the environmental impact of site construction and drilling activities. This minimisation of land disturbance reduced the required amount of rehabilitation measures to the extent where all impacts of the helicopter-supported programme had disappeared within 12 months of completion of work.

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

This paper reviews the annual status of the New Zealand mining industry (metallic minerals and coal) including key aspects such as mineral production, mineral exploration expenditure, commodity price trends, key industry players, market activity and other significant commercial factors.   Strong commodity prices during 2006 have been underpinned by a number of key factors including US dollar weakness and emerging market demand, particularly from countries such as China and India. In real terms commodity prices have recovered significantly since 2002 and are currently at 20-year highs.   New Zealand exploration spending on metallic minerals (predominantly gold) is at a 15 year high driven by rising global commodity prices. New Zealand gold production in 2006 was about 340,000 oz and is expected to grow in 2007 as new mines at Frasers and Globe-Progress (Oceania Gold) and Favona (Newmont) come on stream. Gold production broadly lags 10 years behind exploration spending and exploration activity over the last five years remains well below that seen in the early 1980Æs. Expenditure on coal exploration shows a similar trend with strong growth from a low base over the last five years, reaching over $11 M in 2006. Total coal production in 2006 was 5.9 Mt, an increase of 10% on 2005 with imports from Indonesia adding a further $1.1 Mt.   Newmont and Oceana Gold are by far the largest public gold mining companies operating in New Zealand, although only Oceana Gold maintains a presence on the local stock exchange. Other metals explorers with New Zealand projects include a range of public-listed Juniors (market capitalisation less than NZ$50m) domiciled largely in New Zealand, Australia and/or Canada. Capital-raising on public markets directed towards New Zealand exploration is estimated at around NZ$12 M for 2006, the bulk of this coming via Glass EarthÆs NZ$10 M IPO on the NZAX in October.   The New Zealand Coal sector is dominated by the state-owned enterprise Solid Energy with around 80% market share by production. Other domestic coal competition remains limited, and includes the L&M Group, Pike River Coal, Eastern Corporation, and New Vale (acquired by Solid Energy in 2007). Pricing parity comes mainly from imported coal and global thermal coal prices have remained strong during 2006 at around US$45-55/t, driven by continued expansion in Chinese demand. Coking coal prices have eased 16% since 2005 to around US$98/t in 2007.   Although recent increases in exploration spending suggest a renaissance in the New Zealand minerals sector, long-run trends indicate that we have simply rebounded from a low base over the last five years and much work is still to be done to stimulate further growth in the mining industry to maintain minerals production at current levels. Key industry challenges include marketing exploration opportunities to local and overseas investors, building a critical mass of NZX-listed explorers and providing an internationally competitive environment to attract further capital and expertise.

IN this paper an attempt is made to describe the sluicing operations on the tin fields of north-eastern Tasmania. No claim is made to completeness, for much of the ground has already been covered, and nothing is to be gained by needless repetition. On this account some portions of the subject have obviously received but scanty attention in order that others may be rather more fully dealt with; for instance, figures referring to the accuracy of various methods of valuing alluvial deposits, particulars of efficiencies, and water duties on both overburden and drift; also, the system of recording water distribution, &c.The plans of the tin-streaming shed, sluice and feed·race, and overburden tail-race represent types of the most modern design.The principal alluvial deposits being worked at the present time are situated either in the ancient or modern bed of the Ringarooma river or its tributaries. This river flowed in a north-easterly direction, receiving numerous tributaries on either bank, and finally emptying into Boobyalla harbour. The results from metallurgical test programs are used in feasibility studies for design of new plants and brownfield expansions, in long term mine plans, and to make decisions in an operating plant. There are many elements which contribute to a well-constructed test work program. Ultimately, understanding the accuracy and precision of the test work results is critical to ensuring good decision-making at various phases of a project.Every resource drilling and associated assaying program will have a quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) component, however this often seems to be overlooked in metallurgical testing programs. The principles of “international standard” or “certified reference material” samples and replicate/duplicate testing can be applied to metallurgical programs, although there are metallurgical-specific considerations in both generating and analysing the data.This paper will describe the QA/QC program carried out within the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program. It will present results in the form of case studies from ten years of testing of replicates and bulk reference samples for industry-standard comminution tests as well as laboratory flotation and leaching tests. Ore from the Browns deposit near Batchelor, in the Northern Territory of Australia, is a fine-grained polymetallic sulfide ore hosted in graphitic black shale. Minerals of economic significance are seigenite (Co,Ni)4S3, Galena (PbS) and Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with minor Sphalerite (ZnS). Gangue minerals include quartz, carbon and K-feldspar. The grain size is fine, with a significant amount of the seigenite present as Early flotation work determined that a grind size of around 20 microns was required to achieve clean sulfide concentrates. This work recommended oil agglomeration flotation, in which small sulfide minerals were collected, then loosely agglomerated with oil ahead of flotation into a heavily mineralised froth. In the 400 kg/hr prototype plant this froth proved unmanageable. A conventional flotation circuit after grinding to a P80 of 24 microns and using very low flotation pulp densities resulted in an 86 per cent cobalt recovery.The paper analyses further laboratory work which has increased cobalt recovery to 91 per cent by grinding to û250 microns ahead of flash flotation. The real cobalt recovery breakthrough comes from flash flotation of the whole mill discharge rather than the more usual flash flotation of cyclone underflow. Flash flotation tailings are ground to û38 microns and are floated under normal flotation conditions with only the scavenger concentrates being reground to 20 microns.A one tonne per hour prototyping campaign is scheduled to demonstrate the robustness of this circuit.

Like all chains, iron ore values chains are only as strong as their weakest link, which in ore processing is often the humble chute. While mechanically the simplest element in the iron ore flow sheet, chutes are often the most problematic and regularly the major cause of unscheduled downtime. Chute designs have remained static for decades, despite the extra demands being placed on them by grade reduction, which impacts chutes in three ways viz: 1. Higher volumetric rates as infeed increases to meet production targets. 2. Higher moisture content as mining goes below water table. 3. Stickier properties as the dilution phase is often clay based. While there is no shortage of ideas and the geometry options are infinite, the fact is that chute design has not kept pace with grade decline and has remained essentially unchanged. One reason cited for this lack of innovation is the difficulty evaluating and de-risking designs. While the power of computers running Discrete Element Method (DEM) models has advanced, the models themselves still need to be ‘calibrated’ with the dynamic properties of the ore. Flow properties commonly measured for bin design are useful for static situations only and were never intended to predict dynamic behaviour as in chutes, a critical qualification lost in the mists of time. So while they always produce a colourful and reassuring animation, DEM models informed by static ore properties often result in wildly inaccurate real world predictions. Responding to this low success rate, many operators are now utilising physical modelling to help reduce risk and avoid the consequences of having an underperforming chute in their value chain. Physical testing, in a dimensionless scale-down of the proposed system (bulk material and chute geometry), addresses the shortcoming of mathematical models designs and when used in combination with DEM is the best option. In the ideal world, the focus of chute modelling should be innovative design concepts aimed at addressing future needs, however in reality the focus is nearly always on modifications to installed chutes that are underperforming even today. This situation can be traced back to design procedures which if informed at all, are based static ore properties. As an industry, we need to break this cycle and become more proactive, which means addressing flaws in the current design process. In 30 years of providing modelling support to the industry, I have looking at hundreds of underperforming chutes in the iron ore industry. This practical experience has led to a unique and unbiased perspective on chute design and their performance in the real world. The knowledge presented in this paper can not only be used to help avoid baked-in problems now, but also help guide and evaluate designs so we can deal with the challenges of our low-grade future.

TheFiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of: (i)                  arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii)                an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5 - 3.0 Ma) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii)               a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism.   The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 æAlizeÆ cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last ~5 Ma. The Kadavu Island group, south westernmost Fiji, lies at the north-eastern end of the Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone, and possibly results from oblique subduction of South Fiji Basin oceanic crust, which may have accompanied the anticlockwise rotation of Fiji during opening of the North Fiji Basin. These islands consist dominantly of 3.4 - 0.5 Ma old medium-high K andesites and dacites, with many traits typical of subduction-related volcanics, ie predominance of intermediate members (55 - 65% SiO2) no Fe enrichment, TiO2<1%, and negative Nb-Ta anomalies. These features contrast strongly with volcanics from elsewhere in Fiji around this time, where volcanic centres produced Om-like intraplate olivine basalts. The Kadavu Islands become gradually younger to the southwest, and show a significant decrease in K2O with time. The north easternmost islands (Astrolabe islands) containing the oldest rocks (~3 Ma) have shoshonitic affinities and are considered to be of similar age and composition to the youngest shoshonites found elsewhere in Fiji.

Stopes are used in several underground mining methods. Boundary determination of these stopes is generally based on simple rules of thumb. While several stope boundary optimisation techniques are available, they fail to guarantee true optimum results. The first part of this paper reviews some important stope boundary optimisation studies and proposes a new algorithm to optimise stope boundaries and layouts for underground operations. The second part applies the proposed algorithm to a block model to test its ability to produce optimum results and demonstrate its applicability in a number of different scenarios. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can find optimum stope boundaries and layouts in three dimensions for different stope sizes and economic conditions.

Deposit-10/11A is situated in the iron rich Bailadila region of India comprising haematite ore of average grade 65 per cent Fe. The deposit production line was commissioned in the year 2002 having a capacity of 5 Mt/a. The plant has the state of the art mineral processing equipments.The ore is transported from mines to crushing plant by means of dumpers. The ore is comminuted in two stages to get 150 mm top size product and this product is transported through conveyor system and is stored in silos as feed stock for beneficiation plant. In the beneficiation plant this crushed product is wet screened in two stages to produce a product of lump (-150 + 10 mm) and fines (-10 + 3.15 mm). The product of -3.15 mm top size is fed to primary classifier for a size separation at 150 µm. The resultant product (-3.15 mm + 150 µm) is dewatered and transported to fi ne ore product stock yard through conveyor system. The minus 150 µm material from classifier overflow is fed to cyclones (508 mm cyclone battery with an apex of 65 mm) for desliming at 45 µm and to recover ultrafi nes (-150 + 45 µm). The cyclone overfl ow slimes (-45 µm) along with water is treated in lamella thickeners to recover process water. The thickener underflow material is transported to tailing pond (discharge rate is 300 m3/h at a specific gravity of 1.4) by pumping through HDPE (high density poly ethylene) pipeline and the over flow water is being recirculated. The water requirement for beneficiation is approx 1.5 m3 per ton of ore.This paper aims at identifying and quantifying the factors that affect the overall plant performance (grade and recovery) during the different seasonal variations especially in the rainy season (mid-June to end October). The effect of seasonal variations on unit operations such as milling, classification, thickening and filtration are discussed. Specific cases are presented as examples and recommendations are formulated.

The objective of this paper is to examine the operation of high frequency screens in closed circuit grinding, where the outcomes achieved indicate favourable economic gains at the comminution stage and downstream processes, including flotation, dewatering, and filtration operations. The classification process in grinding circuits has been slowly evolving within the last century. The history of classification devices brings to mind rake classifiers and spiral classifiers, which although having higher efficiencies compared to hydrocyclones, were not able to keep pace with the evolution of concentrator equipment treating higher tonnages. This higher tonnage throughput has tended to drive the concept of utilising hydrocyclones as the classification stage in closed grinding circuits. The comminution process is commonly the most energy intensive stage of mineral processing. Researchers have determined that the classification stage in the comminution process has the greatest potential for improvement. This paper is intended to inform mineral process engineers of the benefits that high frequency screens offer over hydrocyclones. This will be done by reviewing the purpose for the evolution of classification in the comminution process, documenting past and recent studies, and explaining the modern technology that is currently available.
