I. INTRODUCTION. THE purpose of this paper is, first, to give a general account of a little-known coal-district of SE. Kentucky, its topography, drainage, and mineral resources, for those who may be interested in its economic development; and secondly, so to describe the geologic features of the field as to furnish available data to those engaged on the broader problems of Appalachian coal-geology. The data from which the major portion of the paper has been prepared were obtained, in professional investigations for private individuals and corporations, within the last decade. The area under review, defined by a heavy line on the map, Fig. 1, lies between Little Black and Pine mountains, and extends from Harlan on the west to a N-S. line crossing Looney creek 3 miles from its mouth on the east. This area can be divided for description into a Western and an Eastern Division. The character of investigation pursued in the Western Division, below Fugitt creek, was very different from that employed in the Eastern. In the former, only a rapid reconnoissance was attempted : such coal-openings as had been made by prospectors or by citizens in obtaining fuel were visited, their sections measured and, in many instances, sampled. Elevations were obtained barometrically and approximate locations sketched on a small-scale map. In a field where the coals are so well opened, the reconnoissance method gives a very fair idea of the number and character of the principal beds and their relative positions, and affords much evidence for their correlation over wide areas, without permitting the more refined work required to discover all the seams of the measures and to determine the details of geologic structure.

The principal function of the Bell limestone mine, of the American Lime & Stone Co., at Bellefonte, Pa., is to supply raw material to the company's modern rotary kiln plant at Bellefonte. Because mining costs are naturally higher than many open quarries with more favorably lying strata, it cannot compete, except to a limited extent, in the markets for road material and fluxing stone. In the broad sense, mining does have an advantage over the average open quarry when the end products are designed for and controlled by process and final inspection for the exacting demands of the industrial and chemical markets. Approximately 80 per cent of the output of the Bell mine is sold in the industrial and chemical markets. And as higher standards are set each year for construction and agricultural work, the remainder of the mine output goes to these two classes. Mining produces more fines than open quarries, and these fines are difficult to market; on the other hand, owing to absence of contaminating clay and impure rock, a greater percentage of the output of a mine is marketable. Because of the great production of fines, rotary kilns for lime burning are necessary when the stone must be mined. In 1921 the American Lime & Stone Co. operated 19 quarries and 72 lime shaft kilns spread over an area of 40 miles between Bellefonte and Altoona, Pa. At that time the lime-production capacity of the 72 kilns amounted to approximately 700 tons per day. After 15 years the company operates three rotary kilns and six shaft kilns, with a combined output of approximately 500 tons of lime per day, concentrated in its single Bellefonte plant (Fig. 1). Its only stone-producing plants are now the limestone mine at Bellefonte and a construction-stone open quarry at Union Furnace, near Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Since the middle of 1922, the management of the American Lime R. Stone Co. has been under the direction and ownership of the Warner Company, of Philadelphia. Langenecker has reported significant reduction in strength of high-strength metals during ultrasonic t'ibration. Decreases in static yield stress an order of magnitude greater than the calculated stress amplitude of vibrations were reported by him for a stainless steel and for tungsten. in the present work, attempts were nzadc to verify such large reductions in yield and flats stresses using resonant librations of measured amplitudes. The results show that both the soft metals (copper and aluminum) and the high-strength metals (sleels) hare reductions in yield and .flow stresses no larger than the stress amplitude of libration. BLAHA and Langenecker,' investigating the effect of vibratory stresses on the deformation of zinc and aluminum, found a decrease in the static yield and flow stresses approximately equal to the vibratory stress imposed. Langenecker later extending this work to high-strength metals such as stainless steels and tungsten2 found a much larger effect. In these metals the static yield and flow stresses decreased by an amount more than an order of magnitude greater than the calculated vibratory stresses. It was suggested that this phenomenon could be a serious hazard to high-strength structures in an acoustic environment, such as a large rocket at launch, or could be used advantageously in the working of hard-to-work materials such as the refractory metals. Langenecker and others3 have investigated the effect of high-amplitude vibrations on many metal-forming operations. The results have been quite favorable with usually a large decrease in the energy necessary for the forming operation. The processes, however, involve large frictional forces and it is not clear whether the decreases in forming forces are to be ascribed to decreased friction or to decreased flow stresses. The present paper reports an attempt to determine the effect of accurately known vibratory stresses on the static yield and flow stresses. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The standard multicomponent resonator technique for measuring internal friction has been adapted to allow simultaneous high-amplitude vibration, internal-friction measurement, and tensile deformation. This has been described in detail elsewhere.4 Longitudinal oscillations of approximately 50 kc frequency are excited in a multicomponent resonator by a quartz transducer. A second transducer measures the amplitude of vibrations. Fig. 1 shows a schematic drawing of the resonator and grip arrangement and the displacement pattern produced. Since the centers of the dummy bars are at displacement nodes, they represent points where attachments will not materially affect the vibrations. The force is applied by a standard Instron tester. The sample may be deformed while simultaneously vibrating at up to 104 strain amplitude. 11) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The effect of high-amplitude vibrations on the yield and flow stresses of copper. aluminum, tantalum. a soft iron, and a stainless steel has been measured. In addition samples of tungsten vibrating at stress levels up to 10' dynes per sq cm have been subjected to static stresses near the static yield stress with no indication of macroscopic deformation. Fig. 2 gives typical results for 99.999 pct polycrys-talline copper. A vibratory stress of 7 x 107 dynes per sq cm is applied at points "a" and removed at points "h". The potential of uirought tungsten- and tantaluw-rich alloys of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb system was investigated for high-strength structural applications above 2500° F. Appreciable strengthening of tung-sten and tantalum—essentially attributable to solid-solzction effects—was obtained with binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys. Tensile strengths as high as 67,000 psi were achieved at 3000 OF. ThE quest for wrought structural materials which possess good strength properties at temperatures above 2000°F has led to a considerable research effort during the past decade. In addition to exploring the potential of various high-melting-point refractory metals (such as molybdenum, columbium, tantalum, and tungsten) for very high-temperature structural applications, alloy-development programs have been undertaken to achieve greater strengths than could be achieved with unalloyed refractory metals. The methods of strengthening refractory metal alloys have included both solid-solution and dispersion strengthening. General relationships among the relevant properties (melting point, recrystallization temperature, and high-temperature strength) of refractory metals indicate that the highest strengths at temperatures of 2500°F or higher would be obtained with tungsten-or tantalum-base alloys. Therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the high-temperature strength potential of solid-solution strengthened alloys based on the binary system W-Ta; to effect further strengthening, minor additions of molybdenum and columbium (at the 6 and 12 pct levels) were made. The portion of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb quaternary alloy system of interest is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The component metals—W, Ta, Mo, and Cb—have a bcc structure at all temperatures, and their binary systems are mutually completely soluble.' Complete solid solubility in the W-Ta-Mo and W-Ta-Cb alloy systems has been demonstrated,' and, therefore, it was expected that the quarternary alloys of the system would also exhibit complete solid solubility at all temperatures. In the virtual absence of contamination by interstitial elements, all the alloys would be truly solid-solution strengthened. Twenty specific compositions of this investigation included binary, ternary, and quaternary alloys of the W-Ta-Mo-Cb system as well as unalloyed tungsten and tantalum. The compositions are shown in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Consumable-electrode vacuum-arc melting with ac power was used to produce small laboratory-sized, cylindrically shaped ingots (1-1/4 in. in diameter and 2 to 3-1/2 in. long) of the twenty compositions. A furnace was specially constructed to melt as many as four electrode rods simultaneously into molds lined with tungsten or tantalum sheet. High-purity rods of tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum, and columbium were used for consumable electrodes; the diameter of each rod was determined by the desired weight percentage of the component metal in a given alloy. The details of the construction and operation of the melting furnace will be discussed in another p~blication.

THE American Engineering Council, which is the working body of The Federated American Engineering Societies, held its first meeting in Washington, Nov. 18 and 19, 1920. The Federated American Engineering Societies was formed in Washington in June and is composed of engineering and technical societies, national, state, local and regional. These Member Societies elect delegates to the American Engineering Council, which is the administrative body of the Federated. The meeting was called to order by Richard L. Humphrey, Chairman of the Joint Conference Com¬mittee, and the program (which is printed below) was carried out without substantial change by E. S. Carman, who was elected temporary chairman. Under the Constitution, the Council appoints an Executive Board, the members of which are chosen according to the proportional membership of the vari¬ous Member Societies in their respective districts. Under this plan, with the present membership, 'the national societies will have 14 members and the local societies 6 members on the Executive Board.

The enterprises based upon the industrial minerals are diversified in geologic habit, mining systems, processing techniques and marketing methods. Nevertheless, in 1972 these enterprises faced many of the same frustrations and hopes and knotty problems and crucial decisions. Volume and profits were generally improved but were uneven in extent and effect. The U.S. cement industry, for example, was unable to meet demand in major markets. It was constricted by a frozen low-level price structure, faced expensive pollution control measures and watched heavy imports penetrating its markets from several European nations, Mexico and Canada.

The author discusses the promising future of the use of pipelines for transportation of ore slurries over long distances, citing existing installations. Various criteria and factors affecting the use and size of pipelines are considered. Among the factors influencing the use of pipelines are particle size, specific gravity, abrasiveness, minimum velocities, and pumping considerations. Long-distance transportation of solids by hydraulic pipelines holds the promise of great economic benefits. Today within the confines of most mineral processing plants, the moving of solids about in slurry form by pipeline is commonplace, since the method offers great advantages when conditions are suitable. Yet, this method is surprisingly slow in being adopted on a broad scale for transportation of solids over long distances (arbitrarily the term will be applied to one over five miles long). This is especially surprising in view of the successful realization in this country within the last five years of two daring ventures in long-distance solids pipelines. A 72-mile long, 6-in. diam pipeline of the American Gilsonite Co. has been satisfactorily transporting 700 tpd of gilsonite from the mine at Bonanza, Utah, to the processing plant at Grand Junction, Colo., since April 1957. The 108-mile long 10-in. diam pipeline of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. has been transporting about 4000 tpd of finely crushed coal from the mine at Cadiz, Ohio, to the Eastlake power plant of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. on Lake Erie since January 1958. However, besides two projects in the operations of The Anaconda Co. there have been hardly any other significant solids pipeline developments in the minerals industry during the last three years. The two projects are the 14-mile long, 6-in. diam copper concentrate gravity pipeline at Anaconda's El Salvador project in Chile which has been transporting about 800 tpd since January 1959. The second is a 16-in. diam tailings pipeline at the Anaconda Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., designed to transport about 20,000 tpd of deslimed flotation tailings for dam building. This pipeline, which is currently undergoing tryout tests and which will be about seven miles in length, will have a maximum of three 20-in. rubber-lined centrifugal pumps in series at the starting point, each developing a maximum of 100 ft of head, to supplement gravity. It is the writer's opinion that the major reason for the hesitation in considering pipeline operations is confusion due to an inadequate understanding of the basic physical principles affecting the slurry flow process by many engineers in the industry. This in turn begets an attitude of fear and trepidation instead of confidence on the part of many management executives, which leads to a minimizing of the advantages and exaggeration of difficulties when considering the possibility of a long-distance solids pipeline. The promotion of better understanding and consequently the promotion of greater confidence in the potentials of long-distance solids pipelines when conditions are suitable is thus the main purpose of this article. To this end, after considering several examples of the possibilities for solids pipelines in the minerals field, the relative significance of the major factors affecting pulp flow, and some major aspects of slurry pumping will be discussed on a general qualitative level. Then a brief outline of the semi-empirical quantitative methods developed to date for estimating slurry flow behavior will be presented. SOME POSSIBILITIES To give an idea of the magnitude of the possible economic benefits, it should be interesting to mention briefly some of the projects currently under consideration and to suggest some likely future possibilities. At Anaconda's El Salvador Project in Chile (Fig. 1) it is eventually planned to extend the existing 14-mile pipeline by another 60 miles to bring the copper concentrates down to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Preliminary tests indicate that the projected 6-in. pipeline will be able to transport approximately 2000 tpd of concentrates at a pulp density of 40 to

THE history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development ?of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers ill the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South. Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed. them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent-have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribe's in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country, are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections: It is universal in South Africa to speak. of the .Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a " boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

It is my purpose in the following paper to describe the south-central part of Siberia, with special reference to its geology and the mineral deposits. This region is known politically as the Achinsk and Marinsk districts of the Tomsk Government. It is situated among the Altai mountains, in. ]at. 50° to 55O n and long. 87O to 93O E., not far from the northern frontier of Mongolia, and is divided as follows: Mining Districts.—(1) The Tomsk mining district, including the political districts of Altai (belonging to the private crown lands of the Russian Emperor) and Marinsk; (2) the AchinskMinusinsk mining district, including the political districts of Achinsk and Minusinsk; and (3) the North Yenisei mining district, situated in the northern part of the Yenisei political district of the Yenisei Government. Fig. 1 is a map of the Tomsk mining provinces, showing the useful mineral-deposits, excepting those of gold, and giving the routes of the railroads and post-roads connecting the various districts. Political Divisions.—The Tomsk Government is sub-divided into seven " oojesdy " or districts, as follows: Barnaul; Biisk; Kuznetsk; Kainsk; Kolyvan; Marinsk; Narim; and the Altai district (private land, as above). The Yenisei Government is sub-divided into five "oojesdy" or districts, as follows : Erasnojarsk ; Kansk; Yenisei; Achinsk; Minusinsk. Concerning the geology of the region, in addition to the record of my own observations, references will be made to the works of earlier writers. These have been consulted for the purpose of comparison, as regards the districts which I have actually traversed, and for the purpose of completing my account of such portions as I have not been able to visit.

INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. The most important of these fractures or fissures, both in width and value, are the Prieta and Blanca veins, which.

The solubility of cementite in austenite is computed by thermodynamic methods from the observed solubility of graphite. It is found that the solubility of cementite is greater than that of graphite in the entire austenite temperature range. Thus the prior discrepancy between this portion of the phase diagram and the observed metastability of cementite is partially resolved. FOR several years it has been apparent that a serious discrepancy exists in certain observations pertaining to the Fe-C system. Direct experimental data indicate: 1-That the curve representing the solubility of graphite in austenite'" crosses that for cementite4 at about 945°C as shown in Fig. 1. 2— That graphite and austenite saturated therewith are stable1 relative to cementite at all temperatures between the eutectoid, about 723°C, and the eutectic, about 1153°C. These observations are mutually incompatible in view of a well-known consequence of the second law of thermodynamics, namely, that the stable phase (presumably graphite at all temperatures) has a lower solubility than the metastable phase (presumably cementite). Hence either 1 or 2 above must be in error; either the measured solubility of graphite or of cementite, or the observation as to the stability of graphite, is in error. Our present purposes are: 1—To collate the available data on cementite and prepare a table of HO — HO° and of (Fa— HO°)/T. This tabular method seems the best and most convenient way to represent the heat and free energy of formation. 2—To determine whether the measured solubilities of cementite and graphite in austenite are in accord with the above table and the measured thermodynamic properties of austenite, in order to resolve, if possible, the existing paradox of these two solubilities. Enthalpy of Cementite The enthalpy of cementite at 273 °K, H279 — HOcem, was computed by integration of the low temperature heat capacity as measured by Seltz, McDonald, and Wells" 68" to 298 °K) and as given by the Debye functions recommended by them (0" to 68°K); the result is included in Table I. At higher temperature HCem — H,,"" is given by Kelley who used the data of Naeser7 (298" to 1037°K) and of Umino8,9 (273° to 1923°K). We have recalculated Hcem — H273 cem from the data of UminoO in the following way. AT Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse lime-rock. While oversize material was crushed through %-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity. Prior to 1938 the relative proportions of zinc receipts were low and extraneous flux requirements at a minimum. However, subsequent war-inflated zinc demands brought marked increase in fine concentrate and slimy zinc leach residue receipts and an abrupt introduction to smelting a more refractory zinciferous charge. The higher temperature demands of the more refractory zinciferous charge required a higher smelting column and the higher column, in turn, rendered the blast furnace less receptive to improperly prepared feed. Inadequate presinter processing facilities prevented the production of acceptable sinter, and blast furnace production declined to 50 pct of former capacity. In view of a prevailing contention among lead metallurgists as to the deleterious action of high zinc slag on blast furnace capacity, it was natural to overstress this factor and to concentrate on possible changes in furnace design. Another interpretation was that primary correction should be sought through expanded sintering facilities. CHUQUICAMATA open-pit mine is capable of producing a total of 105,000 tons daily. When the sulphide plant is operating to capacity the distribution of this quantity will be approximately 30,000 tons sulphide ore, 30,000 tons oxide ore and 45,000 tons of waste. At that time the combined capacity of the oxide and sulphide plants will be about 540 million lb of copper per year. Twenty one benches have been opened to date and all are still active except the three top ones at the northeastern limit of the pit. These have been pushed back to final slope line. The pit is 8850 ft long, 3540 ft wide and 980 ft deep. Benches are not all developed to a standard height as the large development shovels used in cutting new benches have been of different size and range. At this time new benches 521 ft high are being developed with an' 11-yd shovel. Ore haulage through the greater part of the pit operation has been on down grades to the crushing plant. With the opening of bench F-4 in April 1944 the first adverse-grade ore haul was encountered. Of the total tonnage now being mined, 35 pct comes from the four benches that are below the level of the crushing plant yard. Waste had been dumped on the same or nearly the same level as the bench from which it was removed up to the opening of bench F-4. Waste from this and lower levels is hauled to the level of the crusher, yard where it must cross the flow of ore traffic to reach the only available dumping space to the east of the mine. The average ore haul is 3.13 miles one way shovel to crusher, and the average waste haul from that portion handled by railroad is 3.32 miles one way from shovel to waste dump. Waste that is being removed by truck haulage from the upper part of the -mine is hauled an average of 1 mile. Ore loaded by trucks is hauled 3/4 mile to a car loading ramp and then by rail to the crushing plant. Drilling and Blasting There are two types of development for blasting being used: One for opening new benches and the other for bank shooting. The former consists of 9a in. diam churn-drill holes drilled 11.8 ft center to center in rows 10.2 ft apart with the holes staggered in the rows thus giving an equilateral-triangle pattern of 11.8 ft on a side. After the first block, 492 ft long by 71.5 ft wide, is shot in the pattern described above, the cut is advanced by smaller shots consisting of four rows of holes spaced 23 ft center to center with the rows 23 ft apart. These shots are fired in conjunction with side shots in which the holes are drilled 33 ft center to center and 29.5 ft back from the toe, thus squaring up the bank for subsequent shooting. Nonsteady-state flow of slightly compressible liquids in porous media of non-uniform properties has been the subject of a number of recent studies. Most of these studies considered one-dimensional flow in systems with cylindrical geometry and with the properties of the porous medium varying with radial distance only. A. Houpeurt' studied the problem in its general form by examining the solutions of the differential equation, In Eq. 1, the permeability k and the porosity + are arbitrary functions of radial distance. Houpeurt concluded that, except for special forms of the functions k and the problem is not well suited for mathematical treatment, but lends itself to high-speed digital computation. Carslaw and Jaeger' discussed the solution of Eq. 1 for the case in which the permeability varies as a power of the radial distance. P. Albert3 studied analytically the pseudo steady-state solutions in systems of finite radial extent and non-uniform properties. He also obtained some numerical solutions for nonsteady-state flow using a high-speed computer. William Hurst4 examined the interference pressure drop due to a point sink located in an infinite system consisting of two permeability regions in series. In this case, the permeability changed at a radial distance r from the point sink. INTERFERENCE BETWEEN OIL FIELDS IN A NON-UNIFORM AQUIFER The interference pressure drop for oil fields located in an extensive aquifer of uniform properties is discussed in a number of places in the literature. This work considers the interference pressure drop for oil fields located in a non-uniform extensive aquifer comprising two regions of different properties as shown in Fig. 1. Region I of the aquifer extends from which is the radius of Oil Field A, to ar,,, where a>1. It has permeability k,, porosity +, and effective compressibility c,. Oil Field B is located in Region II which extends from ar, to infinity and has different properties from those of Region I, but the same formation thickness h. Region II has permeability k2, porosity and effective compressibility c2. The choice of this type of aquifer should not imply that it is of frequent occurrence. It is chosen primarily to illustrate the effects of non-uniform aquifer properties on oilfield interference. It is of interest to point out that a non-uniform radial aquifer in which both the permeability and the porosity are inversely proportional to the radial distance can be treated in a manner similar to a linear aquifer of uniform properties. The situation where only the permeability varies as the inverse of the radial distance is also amenable to analytical treatment. Both aquifers behave quite differently from a radial aquifer with uniform properties so far as the water influx and the interference pressure drop are concerned. METHOD OF SOLUTION The expression for the interference pressure drop in Oil Field B due to a constant rate of water influx in Oil Field A is developed in the Appendix. The direction of the optic or "C" axis of a uniaxial metal crystal can be found with the metallurgical polarizing microscope by examining two planes of section on the crystal. Complete orientation of the crystal can be determined if a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section. Examination of Uniaxial Metals in Polarized Light-Rotation of a uniaxial crystal surface, properly prepared,' shows four extinction positions 90 deg apart, provided that the surface is not close to a basal section. One of these two extinction directions corresponds with the projection of the optic axis on the surface of section. This direction can be found if the 'sign of the rotationr2 for the metal is known. To find the direction of the optic axis, the crystal is rotated on the stage 45 deg from an extinction position. With a crystal of negative sign, to produce extinction the analyser must be rotated towards the optic axial direction and vice versa. All sections, other than basal, of a uniaxial crystal have the same sign of rotation and, since there is no change in sign with wave length, white light can be used for these measurements. U the sign of the rotation is not known the presumed direction of the optic axis can be determined assuming a positive sign. A third section cut normal to the presumed optic axis will show basal extinction if the assumption is correct. It is convenient to use the edge between the two planes of section as a fiducial direction common to both surfaces. The optic axis can be related to this direction. If the above measurements are repeated on the other plane of section and the angle between the two section planes measured, stereographic projection can be used to determine the orientation of the crystal optic axis. Determination of Complete Orientation—The complete orientation of a uniaxial crystal can be determined provided that a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section, and the twin law is known. ORDINARILY age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type, Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a super-structure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,1 Janecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling, Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper system,6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula Cu3Au, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change, The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on 14-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. He said it was twelve years since the last meeting on the Pacific Coast and that it was here that the greatest feats. of mining had been accomplished in the history of the country. He told of the work that had been done on the continent and of the new methods introduced by the mining engineers for the betterment of the nation. He then introduced Capt. Robert W. Hunt, twice past President of the Institute, and present Acting President for the San Francisco meeting and the subsequent visit to Japan, who responded cordially to Mr. Ralston's welcoming address. By unanimous vote, the Secretary was instructed to send a telegram to President Charles Kirchhoff expressing regret for his absence, and hoping for a rapid improvement in the health of his mother. It is delightful to read a technical paper like that of J. E. Johnson, The Effect of High Carbon on the Quality of Charcoal-Iron, presented in October, 1912, at the Cleveland meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.' The clear, simple, and straightforward manner in which he describes his experiments and results makes you feel as if you had been, so to speak, at his elbow during the course of his investigations, while his method of procedure is so rational that you can fairly anticipate each step in the logical sequence of the tests performed. The following notes suggested by Mr. Johnson's paper are presented here in the hope that they may help, if only a mite, towards the final solution of a problem of considerable scientific and industrial importance. Physical Properties of Cast-Iron us. Its Ultimate Composition. Mr. Johnson writes that " an investigation along the lines of consumption showed that different irons have different characters totally independent of their analyses," and he declares that " the presence or absence of these elements [meaning carbon, phosphorus, silicon, and manganese] alone will not account for all, scarcely for a half, of the facts which have long been known." He further tells us that some foundries have " proved, by the most irrefutable tests, that they could take a certain iron of a given analysis and produce certain results," while with " another iron of the same analysis they could not produce these results at all." I feel confident that every experienced and thinking metallurgist will readily believe Mr. Johnson's statements and will share his views in regard to the hopelessness of inferring the

THE consideration of the present value of a mine is of great importance when planning for the operation of a property,, and it is particularly so in the case of mines that have large ore reserves. At various times during the past 15 years, the writer has had occasion to make rather thorough studies of the subject, and has been greatly impressed by certain important points which these studies have brought out, points which, though they may be well known, are often lost track of in the rush to obtain low mining costs and high daily tonnage output. . It is the object of this paper to present briefly, and in a general way, some of these points, and especially those which have to do with the relationship which (1) ore reserves and plant capacity, (2) grade of ore mined, and (3) ore losses in mining, bear to the present value. Present value, sometimes called present worth or actuarial value, means the value today of the future earnings of an enterprise. Great industrial, manu-facturing or railroad enterprises, if properly handled, go on indefinitely and their value is directly dependent on their estimated annual earnings. Mines, or oil properties, on the other hand, have an earning capacity only until the ore or oil is exhausted, and their present value is dependent not only on their annual earnings but also on their life, which is the length of the period over which they can produce at a profit. A mine, or an oil property, is a "wasting asset," while an estab-lished manufacturing business is not, or should not be. In other words, the present value of a mining property. represents a sum of money on which there could be paid from operating profits a determined rate of interest, say 8 per cent., and in addition an amount which, if invested at compound interest as received, would at the end of the life of the mine pay back the present value. In his "Wealth and Income of the American People," Walter Renton Ingalls says: "The fundamental principle of mine valuation is the present worth of an annual dividend accruing during the period of years corresponding to the life of the mine."

I received a telegram yesterday from Mr. J. H. Nead saying that he regretted circumstances had come up which prevent his attending the meeting, but that arrangements have been made and Mr. T. S. Washburn, of Inland Steel, will act as the Co-Chairman in his stead. We are sorry, of course, that he cannot be here at this conference. We have, therefore, asked Mr. James J. Bowden, chief metallurgist of Republic Steel Corporation, Cleveland, to act as Chairman and Mr. Tom Washburn to act as Co-Chairman. I will turn the meeting over to these gentlemen at this time.
