IT is generally assumed that in most metals and alloys a given tensile stress produces a given deformation irrespective of the length of time during which the stress is applied. This assumption is justified in most of the important engineering applications of metallic materials; however, in the case of some metals and alloys used or tested at temperatures over or slightly under that at which recrystallization can occur the assumption is not warranted.1 This paper deals with the variations of deformation produced by a constant tensile stress acting for varied lengths of time in the special case of thin aluminum alloy sheet of the duralumin type, which had been subjected to different thermal and mechanical treatments. The material investigated was in the form of a sheet approximately 0.002 in. thick, which had been cold-rolled from a thickness of 0.020 in. It has been found that at a sufficiently high constant tension such material deforms continuously with the elapse of time and that the rate at which this deformation occurs is greatly influenced by the previous thermal and mechanical treatments.

IN THE early summer of 1917, it became evident that the then existing sources of supply of guns and gun forgings were totally inadequate for the enormous and rapidly growing requirements of the Ordnance Department of the Army, so arrangements were made with sixteen makers of other products to take up the manufacture of guns and gun forgings. Nine of these makers were required to produce their own steel from the raw materials and convert it into rough machined gun forgings; the others finished and assembled these forgings into completed guns. In December, 1914, four of these makers of steel and rough gun forgings were instructed to manufacture the same amount of the 6-in. and 9.5-in. guns and howitzers. It, therefore, seemed practical .and profitable to assemble these makers into a small group, together with the officers of the Ordnance Department, and provide standard 'equipment in each of the four works for the production of these two types of guns. The advantages of this cooperation were immediately manifested, and there commenced an interchange of shop practice and a free discussion of facilities and methods that covered not only the equipment but the manufacturing processes.

Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM' KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give's the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation' of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. I HAVE been asked by the Chairman of the Engineering Education Committee to outline what the engineering colleges would like the mining companies to do with the young engineer just, out of college. It has been suggested that, because my own personal experience has been almost entirely within the coal industry, I handle this subject from that view- point. Many thoughtful engineering educators are today wondering what effect the present employment policies of many industrial companies are going to have on the young man just starting out in his profession. Since before the World War large industrial concerns, such as those in the electrical and mechanical industries, have gone to the colleges to interview 'likely graduates until today there has developed in most of our engineering colleges, especially in the eastern part of the country, what appears to be a lively competition on the part of these companies in bidding for the young graduate engineer. The employers of mining engineers, with one or two exceptions, have not yet begun to enter this competition. It remains to be seen how serious this situation will become, how it will affect the training of other engineers, and what effect, if any, it will have on the mind of the young man about to enter college who may be inclined to take up mining engineering, but who gains the impression from this well advertised employment service just mentioned that there is no opportunity for him in the mineral industry as com- pared with the opportunities offered in say civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

(Communication to the Secretary) : The investigation so fully described by Mr. Laudig was undertaken with the idea of determining if it is possible to learn by expesiment, without an actual trial in the furnace, what economical results can be expected from the use of a given ore-mixture. The research was necessarily preliminary, and the results obtained are only to be depended upon so far as they relate to the samples treated. With the exception of the ores obtained from the stock-piles of the Buffalo Furnace Company, and several samples taken at a neighboring furnace, there is no certainty that the ores represented the average shipments of any mine. For this reason the publication of the names of the ores might do producers a great injustice. The names of the ores arc therefore withheld, and their identity is further .veiled by leaving out of the analyses the phosphorus-contents. The investigation was begun with the preconceived idea that the rate of reduction would be found to be dependent upon the accessibility of the particles of the ore to the action of the reducing-gas. In other words, a spongy, brown hematite or a very fine Mesabi would be the easiest reduced. I had formed a scale with No. 21 first, No. 30 second, No. 1 third, Nos. 5, 24, 25 and the remaining Mesabis fourth, etc , which is sufficient to show how much actual results differ from a judgment based on physical characteristics. E. E. Schumacher.*—DO YOU control the humidity in your test room? What effect does the environment have on your results? E. H. Kelton.—We do not attempt to control the humidity. As a matter of fact, the humidity in the beam tests that were conducted in a constant-temperature room varied widely and, as far as we know, there is no effect. The tension tests were conducted largely in an oil bath. I suppose there would be an effect in highly corrosive atmospheres, sufficiently corrosive to notch the specimen; otherwise, I would say none. E. A. Anderson.*—The effect of the humidity on the corrosion of zinc does not become important until the relative humidity is 70 per cent. At that point the corrosion products are capable of absorbing moisture and the corrosion rate increases. Below that point corrosion is almost imperceptible. This does not take into account any effect due to stress. That may be important. E. E. Schumacher.—Recently 1 have become very conscious of the enormous effect that surface films can exert on the physical properties of certain alloys. Shortly, we are publishing an article in which it will be shown that the fatigue endurance of some lead alloys can be changed markedly by merely changing the type of film placed on their surfaces. Changes as great as tenfold were observed. These findings make me wonder whether in your creep test you might not obtain quite variable results, depending upon the type of liquid medium used to immerse your specimens. Did you use more than one type of oil and, if you did, what were your results? E. H. Kelton.—I think we have used no more than three different oils, and we could not see any difference in effect.

THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining.

THE prospector's pan was the first implement used for saving gold, and its action is so effective that it has never been equalled for thorough work. Copper plates, blankets, sluices, and amalgamators of several patented designs have thrust it aside, but in spite of all the advances made there is no dispute among experienced men as to the comparative thoroughness of the work done by it and its rivals. When its rivals are doing their best, the pan can take their discarded refuse and prove their inefficiency by producing from it not only gold, but even the mercury which has been lost from the machines themselves. The trouble with the pan has always been that it was only a tool. Man was the machine that moved it. His work was high-priced, the quantity treated small, and it was impossible to use the pan for any but the richest sands. As a consequence the best gold-saving appliance known has been discarded for years and replaced by machines of inferior excellence, but which could more than make up for their limited ability in saving gold by their capacity for treating great quantities of ore. Mr. Peck is one of the old-time amalgamators of the Comstock district, and the first idea of the new machine came to him as he used to pan below the tailrace of his mill. No matter how fine the work of the mill was, the pan invariably proved that better could be done. The tailings always contained gold, silver, and mercury. This state of things is just as true to-day, after all the improvements that have been made, as it was then, and the much-vaunted method of the " Washoe process" consists in extracting 72 per cent. of the gold and silver by one operation, and then repeating this operation half a dozen times to get out about one-third of the remainder. With all the advances of twenty years in milling, there is nothing more crude in metallurgy than the treatment of tailings in many of the large mills of the West.

ABOUT twenty-five years ago the copper industry had outgrown the Lake Superior production. The electrolytic copper producers had- their process well in hand and the industry was well started in the use of electrolytic copper, both for working into wire and sheet, and for the making of alloys. The trade knew that some brands of copper made good material and that other brands did not. There came together a group of men-a refiner, a rolling-mill man, and a manufacturer of electrical machinery-each of them desiring to know why there was a difference and what .it was. Much investigation was done with wire bars and cakes which involved ' chemical analysis, metallographic examination, physical tests and electrical tests. To find the influence of different kinds of copper in making brass 200 carloads of ingots were made into ,eyelet brass under careful observation; each carload was carefully analyzed and tested before used. The alloy was made and rolled under standard conditions and the results recorded.

Often an in situ leach is the only practical economic method for copper recovery from small low grade oxide deposits. The decision to develop a copper property by an in situ blast and leach is strongly dependent on ore grade, tonnage, hydrology, and the copper extraction and acid consumption rates. The inherent leachability of the ore will in part determine the desired amount of fracturing of the ore deposit by the blast in order to obtain a copper extraction rate that is economical. For the last several years Occidental Research Corp. (ORC), has undertaken a modest effort to address the question of how to best identify and determine the information necessary to predict and control the operation of an in situ leach for the economic recovery of copper. Modelling of the Leaching Process During the past 10 years the activity in the mathematical modelling of the leaching of copper sulfides in copper dumps and heaps has increased dramatically. The modelling of copper oxide leaching has not received as much attention. The acid leaching of non-sulfide copper minerals while chemically less complex, compared to sulfides, does generate a vertical acid concentration gradient in the ore heap being leached due to the acid-base nature of the reaction. This is generally not observed in sulfide deposits that are biologically active, due to the buffering action of opposing reactions involving the generation of sulfuric acid from sulfide minerals and acid consuming host rock. Thus, the objective of ORC 's copper oxide modelling efforts is to determine the leaching parameters which will account for this vertical acid concentration gradient. Knowledge of this gradient will result in the correct choice of the feed acid concentration to the top of the ore dump or heap, such that the effluent will have the desired pH.

THE Alaska Juneau mine has been developed through an adit driven at the elevation of the top of the mill and all mining is done above this main haulage level. As a result of wholesa1e"mining operations about 11,000 tons rock containing one dollar' per ton in gold is, hauled to the. concentrator during every 24 hr. Due to the method of mining, whereby a system of oreways delivers-the.ore direct from the stope to the bottom level of the mine, no tramming of ore is done on any of the upper levels. However, ;in doing exploratory drifting and crosscutting on the upper levels, the broken material is trammed by hand in 1-ton 18-in. gage cars to a nearby raise connecting with one of the several oreways. This constitutes the only tramming operation except that on the main level.

USE of copper as an intentionally added alloy in steel and cast iron has rapidly expanded with-in the last fifteen years. It is estimated that in 1931 not more than 2000 tons of copper were so used; by 1941, however, this figure had grown to 13,000 tons. Tonnage figures during the war years have been restricted just as copper itself has been restricted, but copper-bearing cast irons and steels have played a part in the production of ordnance equipment. They are used in gun carriages, airplane landing-gear assemblies, scout cars, bulldozing equipment, army trucks, armor plate and many other instruments of war. These wartime applications have their counterpart in many peacetime applications; derricks, dredges, mine equipment, railway equipment, trucks, farm implements, automobiles, and tractors, all usually contain some parts made of copper-bearing steel or iron. An example of this is the Ford tractor which in 1940 contained over 300 lb. of copper-bearing steel castings. To this list should be added corrugated building sheet for exterior use most of which, at the present time, contains upward of 0.15 per cent copper. With the return to peacetime economy and the removal of wartime restrictions, it appears certain that copper cast irons and steels will find increasing application in civilian goods.

THE presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent, of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. PART I.-COPPER IN CYANIDATION The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent., of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust. Solubility of Copper Minerals in Cyanide Solution In order to determine the solubility of copper minerals, including metallic copper, under the usual conditions for cyanidation, experiments were conducted with synthetic ores. Each ore sample was prepared by mixing the particular pure copper mineral with barren sea sand. Both the mineral and sand were ground to pass 100 mesh before they were thoroughly mixed. The percentage of copper in each head sample was determined by direct assay, excepting the metallic copper sample, which was computed on weights before mixing. Table 1 gives the results.

Sailing westward from the Society Islands in the fall of 1774, England's noted explorer Captain James Cook discovered New Caledonia-that long, linear island that has played such an important and varied role in the history of nickel. Upon his return to England the following year, Cook's announcement of this uncharted island generated governmental interest, but its distance from the Island Empire, the troubles in the colonies, and the difficulties with France combined to keep English interest indirect and in the background of the then-current events.

HOWARD H. PRESTON, professor of economics and business at the University of Washington, presented a paper before the North Pacific Section, A.I.M.E., on Jan. 23, on the "Economic Aspects of Gold and Silver." He carefully reviewed recent governmental actions that have affected those metals and gave an interpretation of their effects. A brief excerpt from his address; follows: Including the proclamation of March 6, 1933, the principal steps of the present Administration which have carried the United States off the gold standard and led up to the present program have been: (1) The Presidential proclamation of March 6 controlling gold. Two processes for agglomerating fine sized ores with low temperature coke are described. One process (Orcarb) agglomerates ores with limited amounts of carbon; the other (ore-carbon pellets) pelletizes fine sized ores, using low temperature cokes as the binder. Data are presented on the products obtained when taconite, magnetite, and hematite concentrates and several titanium oxide ores were used. REDUCTION of finely divided oxide ores has long been a major metallurgical problem. Various methods of agglomerating, notably briquetting, sintering, nodulizing, and pelletizing, have been developed and are in industrial use. Carbon is the usual reducing agent for oxide ores and attempts have been made to agglomerate fine ores with coking coal in order to get the metallurgical advantages of intimate contact and increased particle sizes suitable for subsequent smelting or reduction.1-3 For the past three years, research has been in progress on two processes for combining fine sized ores with reactive carbon in the form of low temperature coke. By one process, designated Orcarb, the ore is coated with coke carbon in amounts limited to that required for reduction and the result is an appreciable but limited increase in product particle size over that of the original ore. The second process, called ore-carbon pellets, produces pellets of fine ore bound by low temperature coke. The first objective was to develop a process for combining an oxide ore with only enough carbon for its reduction, the amount being that derived from the simple reduction equations. The carbon (that amount theoretically required for the reduction of the oxides in an agglomerate with ore), calculated to CO, ranges from 10 pct for zinc calcines or phosphate ores to 21 pct for rutile and 26 pct for silica. The carbon required for reducing iron oxides falls between the extremes—10 and 26 pct. When the carbon in the agglomerate is low temperature coke, reduction by hydrogen may be expected to take place, thus modifying the calculated carbon require- ment. On the other hand, in practice, an excess of reducing agent over that required in theory is normally used. Screen sizes of three iron ores on which the greater part of the experimental work was performed are given in Table I. Most of the testing was done with Freeport (Renton Mine) coal, but Pittsburgh and Elkhorn bed coals were also used. The first objective was to agglomerate the ore with sufficient low temperature coke to provide carbon for reduction, i.e., in the range from 10 to 25 pct. This was accomplished by preheating the ore, mixing with pulverized coking coal, and completing the coal carbonization in a plain steel rotating retort. The pilot retort, as it is now constituted, is shown by diagram in Fig. 1 and photograph, Fig. 2. Also included is a descriptive plan of operating where roof and air conditions are of the worst. A summary of production results from the machine is presented. THE various units used in conventional mining are well-built. Generally the universal under -cutter, driven by approximately 50 hp, weighs approximately 25,000 lb, and is a very strong piece of machinery. The drilling machine is not as husky as an undercutter, generally is driven by approximately 15 hp, weighs about 9000 lb, but is a well-constructed, sturdy mechanism. The loader, usually 60 hp, weighs approximately 24,000 lb, and certainly is a strong, rugged unit. The working parts of all three of these sturdy conventional units have been made of tough steel alloys for some time. With the use of three machines having a combined horsepower of approximately 125, with a combined weight of approximately 60,000 lb, and with the possible inherent advantage of single purpose machines performing a single function, the use of considerable explosives has been required to complete the conventional mining cycle. It was therefore our thought, upon conception of the first Colmol,* a machine which was to do the work accomplished by the three conventional units plus explosives, that it must be a rugged mechanism. Now, after building several units, after going through many and varied experiments, and after the expense of some million-odd dollars, we find we have observed and learned nothing that contradicts our original thinking. A continuous miner, if it is to give satisfactory performance, must be a rugged piece of machinery. Ruggedness has been, and is constantly, in the minds of our engineers in designing the Colmol. Improvements where they have been required have been in the direction of more weight, more horse power, better alloys, bigger hydraulic pumps and motors; in short, always, toward more torque, greater strength, more ruggedness. Now not only the finest steel alloys are utilized but more than 100 Timken roller bearings are used. The following is some pertinent data on models being built and to be built: The low unit: Cutting height, 30 to 42 in. By changing the upper gear case the maximum cutting height can be increased to 61 in., giving a variable cutting height of from 30 to 61 in. Width of cut, 9 ft 6 in. Width of body, 75 in. over tracks. Height of body, 271/2 in. Overall length, 23 ft. Driven by three 50-hp motors or a total of 150 hp. Weight, 26 tons. The intermediate unit: Cutting height, 451/2 to 72 in. Width of cut, 9 ft 8 in. Width of body, 77 in. over tracks. Height of body, 43 in. Overall length, 26 ft. Driven by three 70-hp motors or a total of 210 hp. Weight, 35 tons.

The correct sampling of ores is a subject of far greater importance than is usually conceded to it. Of the little which has been published on this subject, the recent paper by Mr. Glenn, with the accompanying discussion by Dr. Raymond (Trans., xx., 155), is the latest and best, and well worthy the careful perusal of all interested in accurate sampling, whether by hand or by machine. It is doubtless true that thorough hand-sampling gives as good average results as can be obtained; but all hand-sampling is subject to the possible incompetency, carelessness, or dishonesty of the workmen employed. It is, moreover, tedious and expensive, requires large space, and usually entails considerable delay, both in unloading and in sampling. For these and other reasons, machine-sampling is now regarded with more favor than ever before. So-called machine-sampling may be accomplished in two radically different ways: 1. Part of the stream of material is taken for the whole time. 2. The whole stream of material is taken for part of the time. Under the first case the stream, as it issrles from the deliveryspout of the crusher, is cut continuously in any given proportion, such as one-tenth, one-fourth, or one-half, by some fixed apparatus, which, as it contains no moving parts, is strictly speaking not a machine at all, but may be termed an appliance.
